General Manager As most of you know by now, Riverwood Golf Club was officially sold on Tuesday February 19th to Principals of Coral Hospitality and other investors. Three flights of men’s teams and two flights of ladies played a combination best ball, scramble and alternate shot format for 18 holes. Men’s Flight 1: Alex Carnahan & Bill Knoff Men’s Flight 2: Tim Nicholas & Jeremy Derk Men’s Flight 3: Gary Fairhurst & Wayne Antoniazzi Ladies Flight 1: Linda Stevens & Holly Broom Ladies Flight 2: Beverly Lahr & Deb Erickson January Couples Event Scramble with a twist was the format for 116 men and women in our January couples tournament. The event had four flights and two closest to pin winners. Blue/White Flight Champion: Alex Carnahan White Flight Champion: Marc Lasky White/Gold Flight Champion: John Hays *scorecard playoff Gold Flight Champion: Wally Sadoff Brown Jug Tournament The two day RMGA Brown Jug Tournament is played as a 4 man scramble on the first day and a three best balls of 4 the second day with the lowest two day total being declared the winner. The twenty two 4 man teams were blind drawn at a Monday night pizza and beer pairings party. 1st place: Butch Codi, TJ Vaughan, Bill Stachowicz, Gary Thomas 2nd place tie: Steve Lumley, Tim Nicholas, Mack Mackie, Peter Stocks Larry Lancette, Bob Lahr, Don Fontaine, Stan Swanson
Turf Talk As the winter season draws to a close the golf course will make the change from overseed back to bermudagrass. The golf course has been looking great, due to warmer temperatures in February combined with a couple of days of rain. As we move forward through March and temperatures begin to rise even more the bermudagrass will begin actively growing and it will be time to get ready to for our yearly cultural practices. During the active growth period is when we perform all of our cultural practices that keep the golf course in shape from year to year. Most everyone is familiar with the two staple maintenance practices preformed on the greens, aerification and verticutting. Verticutting, or vertical mowing, is the process by which grain and thatch are removed from the turf. The blades of the verticutter slice into the turf and grab the thatch and pull it out leaving small groves in the surface, which we most times fill with topdress sand. The reason for this process is to maintain a firm and smooth putting surface. Also the groves the verticutter leaves behind create an air space for improved drainage and air movement. Aerification is the process by which we remove small cores of turf and soil creating an air space for which the surrounding soil can expand into. The reason for this process is simple, both foot traffic and equipment on the greens surface creates compaction. This compaction of the soil particles squeezes out any air spaces that exist. The roots of the turf need air to survive so as the air is squeezed out of the soil the roots will become shorter and the turf will begin to decline in quality. Compaction also reduces the ability of the soil to drain excess moisture, which can lead to the roots of the turf getting to wet and rotting resulting in poor quality turf. By relieving this compaction we ensure that the turf roots get the proper amount of air and that they do not get to wet. Both of these cultural practices are very important to sustaining a high quality putting surface, even though the practices themselves can sometimes disrupt play. RLGA Ladies Cup Winners The Ladies Cup Championship is a two day stroke play net event with four flights of 18 hole players and one flight of 9 hole players. Ninety three ladies competed in this prestigious event. Overall Winner: Sandy Waycott Red/Gold Flight: Janice Iannuzzi tied with Julie Rossi Red Flight 1: Adrienne Lasky Red Flight 2: Sandy Waycott Red Flight 3: Ramona Elden tied with Betsy Bonde 9 Hole Flight: Rosemary O’Hanlon Couples Member Guest The Roaring 20’s was the theme for this year’s Couples Member Guest. Due to cold weather, the Nite Golf Event for Friday evening was cancelled but a great time was had by all the rest of the weekend. We saw everything from ladies in flapper dresses on Saturday night to Moonshine for prizes over the course of the weekend. Customized wooden cheese platters and insulated picnic baskets were this year’s tee gifts. 1st Flight 1st Place: Ian & Joan Dinning, Paul & Theo Borg 2nd Place: Joe & Linda Stevens, Bob & Margaret Jakel 2nd Flight 1st Place: Larry & Jean Bray, Bob & Susan Denney 2nd Place: Fred & Mary Rollins, Chet & Mary Skrzypek 5 The Riverwood Heron Food and Beverage We continue to offer two new weekly specials, “Salad of the Week” and “Drink of the Week.” The Club features unique salads and drinks each week with elements of seasonal and local ingredients when available. Remember, Breakfast is served every Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Lunch is served daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Club offers a lounge menu after 3 p.m. for your enjoyment. Seafood Buffet Night is scheduled for Saturday, March 9th from 6 to 8 p.m. Reservations are required for this dinner evening. If applicable, once the grille room is full, we will utilize a wait list for the next available table. Prime Rib Night is scheduled for Saturday, March 23rd from 6 to 8 p.m. Reservations are required for this dinner evening. Pub Night is Tuesday and Thursday night from 5 to 8 p.m. Happy hour drink specials are available from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by Colin’s famous Pub Style menu! Reservations are accepted for members 14 days in advance and non‐members may fill available slots 7 days in advance. Reservations are strongly encouraged for Pub Nights, but not required. Easter Sunday is March 31st, and we have a wonderful Holiday Buffet planned, with a 12 p.m. or a 2:30 p.m. Seating. Reservations are required for this dinner event. Golf Shop Credit Golf Shop Credit will now expire as of April 15, 2010. Remember, March is a BIG SALE MONTH so start spending now. Also, if you do not see what you want in the shop ask the Golf Staff to special order what you would like. Golf Club Discounts Many of you do not know that our Golf Shop offers members a 20% discount off the retail price of all golf clubs 10% off Shoes and 25% off all clothing and outerwear. So before you buy at an off course store check out our prices and support your club. Tee Time Changes At this time of year play on the course is at its peak averaging over 220 players per day with wait lists sometimes 7 days a week. With this in mind if you have a change in players or need to cancel your time please do so as soon as possible. Without the proper player information the Golf Shop Staff cannot perform their duties (pre-ring tickets, notify the starter and rangers etc.) efficiently. By not calling and cancelling your tee time in a timely manner, you may not be allowing other members who may be on a wait list the opportunity to play. When checking tee times on the website please DISREGARD the HOLE assignments when we have a SHOTGUN START. Unfortunately, the JO- NAS tee time system assignment of starting holes does not coordinate with the GHIN tee time system that we use for all shotgun starts and tournaments.
