Solar Choconaut Engineering Challenge (3 Sessions): Grades 6‐12 In this activity there are three themes: the engineering design process, energy, and electricity. This activity focuses mainly on energy. Students will learn about conservation of energy; renewable energy sources, such as the sun; forms of energy, such as heat and light; and how energy can be harnessed and used for work. Students will then create a capsule for their Choconaut to survive under the extreme harsh conditions of space. Eggstronaut Launch & Safe Landing (3 Sessions) : Grades 3‐12 Student teams will be asked to brainstorm the factors affecting the speed at which a space capsule reaches the surface of a planet or moon and suggest how engineers might deal with each factor. They create a specific plan for a capsule that will protect an egg that is launched from various speeds and heights. Once their designs are complete and approved, they build their capsule from the materials provided. If time allows, they will test this model and refine it. Once all models are finalized, each capsule is shot out of an air‐compressed launcher. The group records the results of each launch and discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each kind of design. Tatornaut Engineering Challenge (1‐2 Sessions): Grades 6‐12 How do astronauts survive in space? This engineering challenge will provide the answer to this question, as well as the opportunity for students to be creative and design their own spacesuit. Students will see the steps that must be taken in order to protect a life in order to survive all conditions and obstacles of space. S cience behind Structures Engineering Design Challenges: Grades K‐12 Students will actively gain an understanding of science, engineering and technology to establish connections between the natural and designed world linking science and technology in a team‐building engineering design challenge. • Stranded! Straw Tower Challenge • Wing & Waves 747 Marshmallow and Spaghetti Challenge • Water Tower Challenge Floating through the Clouds Engineering Challenge: Grades 4‐12 Kites, hot air balloons, and gliders. What do these all have in common? No engines! Student groups will be given a design challenge after a short history presentation and teams will design and build an aircraft that must be able to fly based off of what they have learned. They will observe how these specialized aircraft use air in different ways for their movements and how they are including in the oldest forms of flying machines.
Special Populations: Grades K‐12 Soaring to New Heights Program (Exceptional people with special needs) Soaring to New Heights Programs: The complete array of education services offered is also available for special populations. Special programming is available for groups with physical and learning disabilities. School Assemblies: F antastical Flight: Grades K‐12 Up, up, and away we go into the wild blue yonder! Follow us through a series of video clips, demonstrations and crowd participation, as we learn how throughout history people have admired the birds and attempted to beat gravity. See how a pilot would have geared up to fly the 1916 British Naval Sopwith Camel and learn what preparations pilots need to complete so they can soar into the clouds. Students may even have a chance to fly a flight simulator on the big screen or witness an actual R/C craft! We guarantee schools will have a wonderful time learning about how aviators have mastered the art of flying! S urviving in Space: Grades K‐12 W omen in Aviation: Grades 5‐12 What does it take to be an Astronaut? Students will be provided an opportunity in this engaging assembly to learn about how astronauts survive in space. A lucky student will have a chance suit up and get ready for blast off, as students witness what it takes to survive in the adverse conditions of Space. They will also learn about the advancement of Spacesuit technology and participate in hands‐on demonstrations. There will be an assortment of activities (grade‐level appropriate), that students will have a chance to take back with them to their classrooms. Do you have what it takes to survive in Space? If so, call to set up this fun‐filled assembly! This high‐flying adventure will talk about the history of aviation, especially the women who were inspiration to today’s female pilots and future pilots. Learn about the greats like Harriet Quimby, Bessie Coleman, Amelia Earhart, and many more! This assembly will include video clips and loads of information to inspire the future pilots and astronauts in the crowd.
