Riverside funding has helped Sefton youngsters enjoy the great outdoors
Riverside has helped youngsters who keep
out of trouble with the police to show off
their adventurous side with trips to the
Lake District.
We have supported the Police and Youth
Encouragement Scheme (PAYES) to the tune
of £3,200 over the last three years.
PAYES is an independent charity run by
volunteers from Merseyside Police, set up to
promote good behaviour and to help officers
engage with children who have not come to
their attention.
The children attend five-day residential
adventure training courses at Brathay Hall,
Ambleside in the Lake District.
PAYES trustee Constable Keith Lawton said:
“PAYES gives young people the opportunity to
take part in a structured programme, which
they can attend for three years if they stay
out of trouble.
“Activities include canoeing, kayaking, ghyll
scrambling, low and high ropes courses,
orienteering, hill walking, raft building and
other team building sessions. For some of
the young people it will be the only chance
to engage in these kinds of activities that
they get.”
Community Engagement Officer Kay Davies
said: “This initiative is about rewarding children
whose good behaviour means they would
never normally come to the attention of police.
“It encourages them to keep on the right path
and gives them support and guidance to do so.”
Riverside can refer suitable children to the
project, which supports 90 young people
each year.
