RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS The House at 20D Queen Astrid Marrying culture and tradition with the design conscience is a pre-condition in the Asian context. The most crucial aspect is to form a synergy that compliments and merges both the aspects seamlessly. This is done by creating a synergy that is delicate and subtle, yet clear and distinctive. Architectural Layout The house has a site area of 2,525.6 sq m and a gross floor area of 1,735.8 sqm. The brief was to design a home for a three-generation family. Located on a steep terrain of Queen Astrid Park, this home fulfills all the feng shui requirement of the family dwelling, from site and location to colors and shapes. The result is a stepped development, with spaces and forms guided by feng shui and strategically placed on varying terraces, linked by interlocking bridges, airy courtyards and so waterscapes. Spatial layout As per the feng shui requirement, the massing of the house is conceived by connecting three different and separate domains – the bedroom, entertainment and recreation – to the central spine and the core of the house that contains the formal living room, central family rooms and verandah. This core space is architecturally expressed as double volume space with a central breezeway and is heroically wrapped by the feature chevron timber skin. This fully landscaped breezeway, connected to a central courtyard, extends all the way to the second basement and acts as a wind tunnel that disperses cool air and creates natural ventilation for other spaces of the house. Location of water elements is also predetermined by the feng shui requirement. The pool located at the front lawn is aligned to the central breezeway creating a seamless continuity of blues and greens that soens the timber and stone cladding and gives the house a level of formality and order. Tropical layout One of the most challenging feng shui requirement was that the house must face the west, and all main spaces must open up in this direction. This posed as a design constraint, however, the solution to this predicament became a vehicle that expresses the design intent and aesthetics of the whole house. Spatially, rooms that need to be shielded from the sun are strategically tucked away towards the rear of the site, with recreational spaces like the pool decks and spa placed at the front. This also helped to make the outdoor space more usable. The feature chevron timber skin that wraps the central spaces also act as a sun shading element and provides insulation, with its deep overhangs and detailing that provides a cavity layer. Colour Scheme The colour palee of the entire house is also guided by the feng shui requirements of the family. Each member was assigned with a set of ‘feng shui approved’ colours and the interiors reflect this. The entire palee of house, material and hues are also tuned to respect this requirement.
