WILLIAM RUFUS BURRIS 1842-1935 CONFEDERATE VETERAN OF THE CIVIL WAR by Malcolm Flanagan William Rufus Burris left York County, South Carolina, in a covered wagon at the age of six with his family and, after stopping for one season in Alabama to make a crop, settled in a rural area of Marshall County, Mississippi, near Holly Springs. Map of Marshall County, Mississippi in the 1800s During the Civil War Ruf (as he was known to family and friends) enlisted at least three times, the first for the Sixty Day Brigade. According to written reports from his son, he enlisted to fight for his rights. Among those rights, perhaps he as the oldest son was in line to inherit eight to ten slaves. After the first enlistment was over he returned home, realizing: "We were pretty simple-minded to think that we could win the war in 60 days". He later told of sleeping on the cold ground so close to his fellow soldiers that when one wanted to turn over he would call out: "spoon left" or "spoon right" and all would turn together. They often woke up to find they were covered in snow. daughter-in-law that "I still love her and will if I live another hundred years". Before his third enlistment he discussed with his father the possibility of joining the Quantrill Raiders, an independent group who took orders from no one and also took no prisoners. From this group would later come the James Gang. He instead enlisted with Company B of the 3rd Mississippi Calvary, 11th Division, under officers named Chalmers and McGirk. Ruf called himself a scout between the lines and often hid at night in the homes of friendly families. His squad once took captive a group of Federal soldiers. The Federal officer had a fine, fat black horse with a new saddle. My grandfather took this horse, turned his own loose, and started to camp. Before reaching camp they were surrounded by federal soldiers and decided to make a run for it. He was winning the race at first, but too soon his fine horse gave out. Ironically, his old horse ran past him with the stirrups standing straight back! He would later lament: "What I would have given to have been in that saddle..." Ruf sat on his horse with his hands in the air while his pursuer emptied his pistol at him. After missing with all six shots, however, the would-be captor became the captive and they went back the way they had come. Ruf was captured for good, however, on July 19, 1863, near Germantown, Tennessee. He was shipped first to St. Louis, Missouri, then to Camp Morton, Indiana, and finally to Fort Delaware. Here he stayed for the duration of the war. While in military prison he was quartered with, among others, a Captain Fontaine who later told of physical and verbal abuse but my grandfather never told of any abuse while he was there. However, he was a private, not Captain Fontaine. He said he had friends among the guards. After spending a few days to visit with family and sweetheart, Ruf, re-enlisted on March 4, 1862, in Company D of the 375th Mississippi Infantry, later to be known as the 34th Mississippi Infantry. While in this company he contracted typhoid fever and was given a discharge on July 15th (no year recorded but likely 1862). After a period of recuperation he enlisted again. By this time he was engaged to his sweetheart even though his father tried to discourage the engagement, telling the fiancée that Ruf could return severely wounded and that would be unfair to her. She supposedly replied that: "I would marry him if he came back missing both arms and both legs". However, by the time Ruf returned home she had married someone else and died.
