in the regions
A snapshot of Play England activities across the nine regions in England
North East: Play-friendly Northumberland National Park
A play-friendly national park
for children is set to launch this
summer through a partnership
of several organisations in the
county.
The Play England North
East team in conjunction with
Northumberland National Park,
the Northumberland County
Council play team, Northumberland
children’s centre and Groundwork
North East are extending
opportunities and provision for all
children and young people to play
throughout the national park and
around the visitor’s centres.
The goal for this project is to
encourage families to see the
wider countryside and parkland
as an exciting and stimulating
space for children and young
people to play.
With the help of local
volunteers, a woodland site in the
national park close to Hadrian’s
North West: Welcome to The Witts
Blackburn with Darwen Borough
Council are celebrating the
completion of The Witts, a
new play pathfinder funded
adventure playground in Witton
Country Park.
After an extensive yearlong
consultation process with
children and young people,
detailed plans were developed
by a group of 40 children. This
group worked with the Blackburn
play rangers, and artist and
designer, Jim Buchanan during
the consultation. A 12 week
workshop programme allowed
the young people to engage in
the design and delivery of the
Wall is being developed into a
natural play space. Groundwork
North East and Northumberland
County Council’s play team will
deliver play sessions at this
site which will be informed
by consultation with children
and young people in the local
communities. This will allow the
local children and young people to
influence the development of the
natural play space.
In addition, the Northumberland
children’s centre is funding
‘play bags’ which will be available at
the national park’s visitor’s centres.
The ‘play bags’ will be filled
with playable goodies, determined
by children through consultation,
and are intended to enhance
children and young people’s play
experience throughout the park.
up with its name ‘The Witts’, a
play on words derived from the
park’s history.
A range of stakeholders
such as community police and
representatives from the local
neighbourhood boards had direct
input into the programme, via
the Witton Park Adventure Play
sub-group.
Sharon Cornwell, a project
lead said: ‘As a destination
park which caters for all
communities in Blackburn with
Darwen, this playground is a
fantastic opportunity for the
team to deliver adventurous and
The adventure playground
boasts an eight-metre high
tower with a tunnel slide
embedded in the hillside,
