A Year in the Life of Bournemouth Rotaract
Here is what we did in a year:
Event 1: Elderly People’s Christmas dinner in November, only a couple of weeks after I joined. We put on a
Christmas dinner with entertainment for 90 elderly people at the Wessex hotel in Bournemouth.
Event 2: Our Club President, Nathan Cosgrave, was part of the Rotaract Overseas Project
team, which flew to Benin in West Africa to construct a fully functioning school in just 16 days!
To go there he had to raise over £3,000 for the project, and pay £1,000 of his own money to
cover the costs of the trip.
Event 3: Karaoke, a chance for me to give my own rendition of Gloria Gaynors, “I will survive.” I must
have raised £50 in that one song – as a stampede of people rushed up to the stage to put money in the
bucket for me to stop singing!
Event 4: Raising funds for Hope Now, a charity for orphans in Ukraine. Fiona Goggerty was so inspired
by the work that they were doing, with the help of Bournemouth Rotaract and local Rotary Clubs, she
raised the funds to go over to Ukraine to work at the orphanage over a 2-week period – an experience
that she will never forget!
Event 5: A Donkey Derby at the May Fete in Kinson where we walked children up and down
on the back of a donkey, and had a couple of goes ourselves!
Event 6: Rotary Kids Day Out. Not only did we help give disadvantaged kids a great day out at
Paulton’s Park, I got to dress up as a clown and rode the roller coaster 8 times in a row!
Event 7: Can’t Walk Away BBQ – a charity that Bournemouth Rotaract helped to set up.
Event 8: Annual Back-to-Front charity dinner. Yes, I was confused as well! Basically, the
dinner starts with the good bit; the dessert and finishes with the starters!
Event 9: Collecting Christmas presents for local children’s charities and local hospices.
Event10: Assisting Poole Bay Rotary Club with the street Christmas Collections.
Event 11: Holding a general knowledge quiz to raise money for next years Overseas Project.
Event 12: Breaking the world record attempt for flying 974 kites at the same time on
Bournemouth and Boscombe beach during the Rotary in GB&I Conference in April ’07.
I haven’t got the space to tell you of all the events we have done this year so have just touched on a few of
them, and we have many more coming up.
What I got out of it: I’ve had an amazing year with Bournemouth Rotaract and feel that the club has really
made a difference to so many people.
Identifying the Need:
Bournemouth Rotaract raises money for Children in Need
Guess the number of balloons in the limousine
Members of the Club teamed up with 15 students from
Bournemouth University to organise an event to raise money for
Children in Need. We needed an event, which would encourage
people to give to a charity they may have already donated to, and
we came up with the idea of guessing the number of balloons in
the limousine.
Organising the event:
The Bournemouth University Students produced flyers, which they distributed the day before the event and
contacted radio stations to promote the event. On the day they worked with the Rotaractors to take notes of
the guesses and collect donations.
The Rotaractors contacted Bournemouth Council and obtained permission to use the square in the centre of
town to park the limousine; this was agreed at no cost to the club. They also negotiated with a local limousine
company to use the limo for the day free of charge and to donate the prize of a night in the limo free of charge.
The event was publicised to the public by the Bournemouth University Students and by Bournemouth Rotaract to
Rotaract and Rotary around the District, as well as local employers.
Running the event:
We manned the stall from 10am to 4pm with help from the
University Students, Club members, potential club members and
Rotarians from our sponsoring clubs and from other Rotary Clubs in
District.
We all spring into action, asking the public to make donations to
Children in Need and guess the number of balloons in the car. The
person who guesses the nearest to the correct number of balloons
wins a trip out in the limousine, with the second and third prize of a
Pudsey Bear soft toy.
the
The Benefits:
The event is well supported by the shoppers in the town, and Bournemouth Rotaract would like to thank all
those people who donated to children in need and have helped us raise to a massive total of over £1500.00 to
date which has also brought in 7 new members for the Club.
A special thank you must go to the students at Bournemouth University for giving up their time to help with the
project and also to South Coast Limousines for allowing us to use the car for the day and donating the 1st prize.
Bournemouth Rotaract provides meals for the Elderly - Intergenerational
project
Background:
We were approached by a representative of Help and Care, (an elderly peoples
Charity) and Poole Council to help them address the problem of the older
Generation’s negative views towards Younger people.
Identifying the need:
It was clear that most of the feelings stemmed from the isolated elderly who
rarely get out and see the good work that the youth of today are actually doing
in the community. In fact because they rarely leave the house, their views are
formed from TV and other Medias, or from bad experiences they may have had.
For the project to be a success it was to meet 2 main criteria:
1) To change attitudes of the Elderly towards Younger People
2) To provide Isolated Elderly people the chance to meet and interact with
other people who live locally to them.
Organising the project:
Immediately the group all voted in favour of doing a Christmas Luncheon style
event, with some live entertainment. Using our contacts at the council we got in
touch with over 100 elderly people who we believed would be isolated and be
spending Christmas pretty much on their own. We only had a month to prepare. The response was fantastic,
and we had around 80 elderly people attend the event. This ensured our first
aim was met and allowed us to focus on the remaining goal.
We got in contact with members from a “Young Enterprise” company, as these
are an example of young people who work very hard and give very good
accounts of themselves to represent younger people along with members of our
club.
We seated at least 2 younger people on each table with the elderly guests so
people got to interact with both their own age and someone younger. We held
discussions about what attitudes people have towards younger people and why they have formed these
opinions. This resulted in the Elderly people having a Christmas to remember and leaving with a completely
fresh and different view of younger people.
The total Cost of the event was £1315. We used only £500 of club funds for this event the rest was provided by
JPMorgan and Poole Council. The turnaround time of the Project was so quick it meant we were making
decisions under pressure and meant the entire club had to chip in.
What did I get out of it?:
A real club effort and extremely fun day it will certainly be one of my fondest days within Rotaract. Every time
we receive feedback about the event it is extremely complimentary. Most people attending went out of their way
to thank us with letters of gratitude.
What did the elderly get out of it?
Councillor Joyce Lavender (Poole) An excellent event, well run, and a credit to the Rotaract Club and the
organisation as a whole.
Mrs Stretten Such a good day I have only been out twice this year, it’s nice to be with so many nice people.
Bournemouth Rotaract Spring Fling Project
Identifying the need:
SPRING, stands for Supporting Parents and Relatives in Neonatal Grief. SPRING, is a group
made up of professionals and parents who aim to give support to parents and families who
experience baby death from miscarriage, death during pregnancy and just after delivery.
This support includes bereavement counselling, befriending and improving the facilities
offered in the maternity unit and within the community. They can only provide this service
on monies raised locally.
SPRING had created a place in Poole Crematorium where parents can lay their children
to rest, called the Snowdrop Garden. It is separate from the rest of the graveyard
enabling parents to grieve in private but also to create a relaxing environment.
Rotaract met SPRING through JPMorgan employee, and Rotaract member, Richard
Davis. When Rotaract heard about SPRING they were keen to help out. “What we
need”, said SPRING, “is an event that can be organised for us, that we can just enjoy
and socialise. Much of our work is fundraising, and it is difficult to have time to
socialise with each other as friends simply because of time.”
“Righto”, said Bournemouth Rotaract, “leave it with us”.
The Project:
Bournemouth Rotaract made the decision to organise a SPRING Fling and were in
charge of organising the venue, the buffet, the band, the raffle, the decorations and
co-ordinating bookings, as well as promoting the event. It was attended by over 200
people who enjoyed the live band and food. As a result of ticket sales and the special
raffle a total of £1,160 was donated to SPRING.
Who benefited:
The event provided many benefits to the community, including:
• SPRING can continue to help families who have experienced neonatal grief
through counselling and support groups.
• SPRING can go ahead with the development of their second Snowdrop Garden,
allowing parents to lay their children at rest in a tranquil and peaceful
environment.
• SPRING gained promotion, not only locally, but also around the whole of
Hampshire, Dorset and parts of Wiltshire, increasing their image and profile,
which will hopefully lead to greater support and in turn benefit the local community even more.
What I got out of it:
As a result of this fantastic project, Bournemouth Rotaract were the proud winners
of the Ron Boyce Award. This award is given to the Rotaract Club in Great Britain
and Ireland that has organised the best fundraising project that year, as voted on
by delegates at the Rotaract in Great Britain and Ireland Conference.
I personally built upon many useful skills to enable my personal development,
particularly in the areas of organisation, management, public speaking, marketing
and self confidence. Plus it was great fun and wonderful to see how all our hard
work had really made a difference to people who needed it.
Rotaract Overseas Projects – Benin 2006
The project:
In January 2006, a team of seven Rotaractors and one Rotarian from
Rotaract in Great Britain & Ireland (RGBI) worked with Rotaractors and
Rotarians from Cotonou in Benin to replace a rickety old school
structure with a totally new block of three classrooms with office and
warehouse.
The impoverished neighbourhood of Agla East in Cotonou floods
annually during the rainy season, and has one of the lowest rates of
school attendance in the area. Flooding of the school served as an
excuse for many parents to hold their children out of school, and
contributed to the low rates of socio-economic development in the
neighbourhood.
Raising the funds:
The Rotaractors first had to raise over £19,000 in order to purchase the
necessary construction supplies and materials required to build the
school. Likewise, Beninese Rotaractors raised funds in order to cover
part of the hosting expenses of the Rotaract Overseas Project team by
holding raffles, collections, and parties.
Running the project:
The team arrived in the middle of January to find a cement
superstructure without roof, floors, doors or windows waiting for them.
In just two weeks, the concrete shell was transformed into an
operational school that accommodates the children of Agla.
Who will benefit:
The building was officially handed over to the school in front of
community leaders and members of the Benin Government on a Friday
afternoon, and the building went into direct use on Monday morning.
Hundreds of children were finally accommodated in decent classrooms.
What I got out of it:
Knowing that RGBI’s Rotaract Overseas Projects is just one way in which Rotaractors from Great Britain &
Ireland make a difference to the world.
Football Kit Sponsorship
The project:
Why not support your local community
and pick a school whose football team
needs a new kit but they can't afford to
buy one? Do some fundraising and
surprise them with a new kit.
That’s exactly what Rotaract did. We
identified a local school that urgently
needed a new, up-to-date football kit,
arranged a meeting with the Head
Teacher to pitch our proposal and of
course, they were ecstatic!
Once the kit had been designed and arrived safely we organised a presentation ceremony and invited the
parents, the teachers, the governors and local Rotarians to see the new kit in all its glory.
Raising the funds:
We had to raise approximately £300 to pay for the new kit, this was done by running weekly raffles in a local
hotel.
Who will benefit:
The football team looked great in their new kit, it gave them the confidence they needed to win their first match
of the season!
What I got out of it:
We felt a real sense of achievement and community spirit, it was great to know that we had helped one of our
local schools.
Chelmsford Rotaract – Read to Ray
The project:
For an estimated 20+ years Chelmsford Rotaract has been reading the local
paper to a blind man every Tuesday night.
The project involves all members of the club, reading a total of
approximately 1,050 papers over the projects lifetime.
For the majority of the project, 2 members have gone to Ray’s house and
read the paper with his dogs, who have changed over the years, before
having a chat with Ray.
Who will benefit:
Whilst this provides a service to Ray, in that he can keep up-to-date with
local news that is not available in other formats, it also provides him with
some companionship at a time when may people who live alone can feel
lonely and in Ray’s situation, vulnerable as well.
This project also strengthens the relationship between the old and the
young. Ray learns the viewpoints of a younger generation, and at the same
time, Rotaractors learn about view of an older generation.
What I got out of it:
Every Rotaractor who has helped, and continues to help with this project
grows in confidence as it involves reading out loud to someone you’ve never
met before. We also gain knowledge of the local area over the years and
get to practice our debating skills.
This project really amplifies the sense of community volunteering.
Rotaract District 1090 – Banbury Camping Rally
The project:
This is an annual event organised by Rotaract in District 1090, covering the
Thames Valley and Oxfordshire.
Approximately 150 Rotaractors from all over Great Britain & Ireland treck to a little
Scout Camp near Banbury every August Bank Holiday to take part in true Rotaract
fellowship.
Rotaract 1090 hire the Scout Camp, a marquee and organise various entertainment
including a DJ for the whole weekend and bands.
Each year there is a different theme, in the recent past this has included
“Gangsters & Molls”, “Mr Men”, “Christmas in August” and most recently “Wild
West”.
We always support the Scout Camp where we stay by carrying out a community project on-site, last year we
helped cut back hedges, this year we re-painted one of the mess huts.
Who will benefit:
Not only does every Rotaractor, and Rotarian, present benefit from personal development sessions, friendship
and sharing of ideas, but each year approximately £1,000 is donated to Charity. To date, the following charities
have benefited from this event:
• British Heart Foundation
• The Willow Foundation
• Missing People
• The Samantha Dickenson Trust
DIY at local school
The Project
My Rotaract Club decided to support our local community by helping to re-decorate a classroom at a local
school. It was a way to give back to the local area and have great fun at the same time.
We identified a local school that needed help and contacted the Head
Teacher to ask if they had any projects they wanted help with.
Luckily, the did, they wanted to us to re-decorate one of the
classrooms before the start of the new school year.
We set a date and then set about contacting the local DIY stores to
see if they will sponsor the event and supply the equipment free of
charge…the good news for us is that they did!
On the day a team of 7 club members arrived nice and early and get
going on with our project.
It was a really great day.
The Benefits
Not only did we all feel a huge sense of achievement but we made a huge difference to the local community and
had fun doing it too.
T he best 80's night in the world...ever!
The Project
Disco nights, particularly themed around decades, always seem to be very popular. So in February 2007,
Langley and Iver Rotaract Club held an 80s themed night, which consisted of a quiz, buffet food, a disco and a
raffle.
An organising committee was set up, delegating key responsibilities for particular areas – e.g. food, quiz
questions, publicity etc.
For this event, a good DJ was king! Rather than purely looking in
the Yellow Pages, we asked around for recommendations and
booked a great DJ
To add that extra special touch, we encouraged people to dress up
to add to the spirit of the evening!
As well as a disco, we decided to include an extra element to the
evening in the form of a themed quiz. This worked extremely well,
as a disco from 7:30 until midnight would have been far too long.
The Benefits
With over 70 people attending, we made a profit of £500, which was donated to local charities in the area.
Of course, everyone who attended had a great time too!
Rotaract in GB&I – World Kite Flying Record Attempt
The project:
6 months ago, I was sat in a meeting with the rest of Bournemouth Rotaract
going through our agenda. As the meeting was coming to a close and we
reached “Any Other Business”, I was glad that the meeting hadn’t run on too
late – I had a game of football to watch!
“Any Other Business?” I offered, whilst gathering up my things. “I have” came
the response from the corner of the room where our Rotary District Liaison
Officer, Richard Burnett, was sat. I wasn’t going to see my football match…
from that second, until it turned 4.57pm on Saturday April 14th, Bournemouth
Rotaract were set on a World Record Breaking mission – to fly 1000 kites at
the same time on Bournemouth Beach.
The club were told of how the RIBI conference ’07 was to be held in
Bournemouth, in the Bournemouth International Centre on the sea front.
Basically, Rotary were coming to town, and they wanted people to know!
We all agreed that this was a massive opportunity to do something that would publicise Rotary, and Rotaract.
We needed something big; something out of the ordinary; something that would capture the imagination of the
people of Bournemouth. Ideas of what we could do were flying around the table, when Rich piped up again.
“We could break a World Record . . ?”
You don’t even want to know some of the records we discussed breaking! From one member who already had
quite long nails offering to never cut them again in the name of Rotaract, to pulling a Double Decker bus with
our teeth, we finally came up with the idea of flying 1000 kites at the same time on Bournemouth Sea Front.
Visually 1000 kites flying at the same time would be amazing, we would get the message of Rotary and Rotaract
to at least 1000 people, if we were successful, and it was something that we thought would really interest the
general public.
In the weeks that followed, we got started in planning this massive event.
There were so many things to think about; where were we going to get 1000
kites from? Where were we going to get 1000 people to fly the kites from?
Could we take the sea front over?
Over the coming months, we met every week, splitting into different
committees; Equipment, Sponsorship, PR and Marketing, a Design Team, and
a team to plan the day and ensure that we had enough helpers for the event.
Little did we know how much work a record -breaking attempt would be! Our club was meeting every week
discussing advertising, the size of kites, the layout of the beach and well, most importantly of all – wind. It was
the starting point of every discussion, whether it was too fast, the wrong direction or just not there at all. It was
the one thing that we had no control over, but it had control over us. All we could do was plan contingencies for
every potential wind direction and wind speed.
We approached the local media to advertise the event and we had club members making their debut on radio
and even television.
The week before the event was almost as hectic for us as Christmas is for Santa Claus. Frantic phone calls about
participants, assembling kites, reserving enough space for us on the seafront, posters, tickets, and yes, you
guessed it, wind! Sadly the weather had been wonderful in the last week. I don’t think anyone has ever wished
for wind more than our club did that week!
April 14th was a beautiful day, sunny and warm, it was a perfect
day to be spent at the beach…but it wasn’t windy!!! Some of the
club members were up at 5am to sort out last minute details,
setting up the site, eating bacon sandwiches and drinking one
too many cups of coffee. When it got to the moment of truth,
everything did go to plan. The club had succeeded!
At 4.57pm on Saturday 14th of April, Bournemouth Seafront’s
skyline was filled with 927 kites. The record had been broken
and now it was ours.
The feeling was great, congratulations flew around us and people were cheering. This was definitely worth
missing countless footie games for.
Who will benefit:
Not only had we publicised Rotary and Rotaract, we had brought the local community together for a really good
day and made 927 people from the local community - Record Breakers!!!
At the same time, we sold spare kites at £2 a go, raising money for the Rotary Foundation, Rotary’s own charity,
which is eradicating Polio world-wide.
What I got out of it:
Every member of the club got so much out of this project. We all learnt new skills by organising a major event,
including PR, talking live on radio and TV, time management and negotiation skills.
Rotaract Mountain Challenge
The project:
The challenge, to climb 3 mountains,in 3 countires all in 24 hours!
Deben Rotaract provided a team of 7 members to complete the Rotary
Mountain Challenge June 2006, with the venture starting November 2005
and was finally completed with the entire sum of £5,048.87 being handed
over to Sight Savers, November 2006.
Raising the funds:
The fund raising was achieved primarily by sponsorship and supported by the following events. These deserve a
mention according to their own merits but together create an impressive portfolio which add to ongoing
commitments to make a small club very proud of it's development and success.
The Superhero Pub Crawl combined fund raising efforts with a Rotaract leaflet
campaign in March, which doubled website traffic for a week! It was also
reported upon in the local newspaper which increased local awareness of our
club efforts and raised our profile locally
The Speed dating event involved a poster campaign in a region of East Anglia
hitherto un-chartered by our club. This was an interesting venture in an area
marked for greater local activity
The local bowling evening was very successful with a strong Rotary turnout. Again this has improved our
standing with 3 local Rotary clubs, not including our sponsoring club and improved our inter club relations
Who will benefit
Not only have Sight Savers International and Rotaract benefited
from funds and publicity but the team effort over the year
resulted in a stronger club with more pride and professionalism
evident within its club efforts.
The above has also raised our profile with notable successes
across a wide range of areas including local and national
publicity, fund raising, individual personal developments and
provided a 'knock on' effect by promoting inter club standing and
attracting new club members.
World Swim for Malaria
The aim is to get 1 million swimmers from all over the World to swim on 1 day - 3rd December 2005. 100% of
the money raised will go towards buying malaria nets for people in Africa.
Go to the website - www.worldswimformalaria.com and register a swim with an estimated number of
participants. From there contact your local swimming baths and see if they can help with preparation.
Swims can be as small or as big as you would like. A couple of members doing a couple of lengths, or a large
event with Rotaractors, Rotarians and local residents doing a relay - whatever you like!
Not only can you buy nets that will help to save lives, but you can raise the profile of Rotaract through
community publicity and involvement.
Should not cost much (the cost of using the pool for an hour or so!) but has the potential to raise
THOUSANDS!!
Mobile phone recycling
Rotaract are collecting old mobile phones in aid of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital. Each phone donated
raises £2.50 for the charity.
Every year Great Ormond Street Hospital cares for over 90,000 young patients affected by rare, complex and
often life-threatening conditions. The hospital has the widest range of paediatric specialties under one roof in
the UK, offering patients the very best in medical care.
