Protect Against
Seasonal Flu this Winter
health
works
Health and social care workers,
particularly those who have direct
patient contact, are urged to take up
the offer of the free flu jab to protect
themselves, their families and patients
from flu over the winter.
Health and social care workers in
Rotherham are being made aware
of the importance of having the flu
vaccine. By having the jab you will be
protecting yourselves, your families and
your patients/clients against the flu.
A number of sessions have been
arranged for staff to receive their jab
through the Occupational Health
Department and many staff have
already received theirs.
In addition to protecting against
other circulating flu strains, this year’s
seasonal flu jab also offers protection
against swine flu and is being offered
for the first time to pregnant women,
who have an increased risk of severe
disease and flu-related complications
leading to hospital admission if they
catch this strain.
Everyone aged 65 and over is routinely
offered the jab, as are younger people
with long-term conditions such as
heart disease, diabetes, asthma,
multiple sclerosis, serious kidney
and liver disease. If you are or know
someone who is the main carer of an
older or disabled person you/they may
also be eligible for the flu vaccine, ask
your GP or practice for advice.
Dr John Radford, Director of Public
Health at NHS Rotherham, said: “Flu
is much more serious than a cold and
anyone who has had flu will tell you,
it’s not very pleasant. It is extremely
important that anyone who has direct
contact with vulnerable patients or
cares for elderly or ill people has their flu
jab to give them, their patients and their
family members the best protection.”
Staff vaccination
sessions take place at the
following times and venues:
Alan Tolhurst, reappointed for another four
year term.
Alan Tolhurst has been reappointed,
by the Appointment’s Commission as
establishment of Rotherham PCT in
April 2002 and was awarded an OBE
in 2008.
Speaking of his appointment, Mr
Tolhurst said: “Over the last eight years
I have witnessed some fantastic work
being undertaken by staff at NHS
Rotherham to improve the health of
local people. Over the next couple
of years the NHS will face a number
of tough challenges as it reorganises
under the new coalition government.
I hope that during this time we will
continue to see improvements in
the delivery of our services and in
the health of local people. I also
look forward to further joint working
between ourselves, the local authority
and other partner organisations.”
Mr Tolhurst has had a long and varied
career which has included 31 years
in the Royal Air Force. Since retiring
South Yorkshire.
He was appointed as Career
Development Coach under the NHS
‘Executive Choice’ scheme in 1997 and
in 1999 he was appointed as a mentor
with the NHS Leadership Development
Programme for Chief Executives.
Nottinghamshire Partnership, where he
helped to attract an extra £28 million
of Government funding to supports
development projects and is currently
Chair of the Airport Consultative
Committee for Robin Hood Doncaster
Sheffield Airport.
Staff Survey
It’s time for the annual staff
survey. The Department of
Health and the Care Quality
Commission have governed
that all NHS organisations are
to take part in this year’s staff
survey process. A full census of
commissioning staff will be carried
out and a sample of those working
in provider services will be invited to
complete a questionnaire. We have
to census all commissioning staff
due the low numbers employed in
these roles.
We have a good history of
positive staff survey results and
want to be able to continue with
this in NHS Rotherham as a
commissioner and to share our
results with the organisation to
which provider staff will transfer.
Commissioning staff and those
selected as part of the provider
sample will receive the staff survey
questionnaire at the beginning of
October. As in previous years you
will be provided with protected
time during the working day to
complete your questionnaire.
Our survey provider for this
year will be capita surveys and
research they will handle the
processing of all surveys once
completed. This ensures the
confidentiality of the process as
NHSR are not party to any of the
completed questionnaires. They
are to be returned directly to
Capita in prepaid envelopes.
Scheduled reminders will be
issued by capita at specific
points between October and
the completion deadline in
December. We will be reporting
completion rates regularly so
please complete and return your
survey as soon as possible.
process please contact leigh-anne.
Choose Well this winter
NHS Rotherham is leading a campaign to
encourage people across the borough to choose
the right treatment and the best place to go for it in
the new ‘Choose Well’ campaign.
The main aim of Choose Well is to make people
aware that the NHS offers a number of options
which are tailor-made to deal with different ailments.
Options include GP’s, pharmacies, walk-in centres
or by simply calling NHS Direct. In some cases
staying at home and looking after yourself is the
best care leaving emergency services for those
who need them most.
Across Rotherham there is an excellent range
of services that meet everyone’s health Needs. The
Walk-in Centre based at Rotherham Community
Health Centre is a major plus and
is open 8am-9pm every day of the year except
for Christmas Day.
Winter is a really busy time for A&E departments
and attending A&E or calling 999 should be reserved
for people who are badly injured or showing
symptoms of a critical illness such as chest pain.
Choosing well ensures that help is available to those
who need it most and that patients receive the most
appropriate care for their needs.
You can also access health advice from local
pharmacists, who are highly qualified to give advice
on a wide range of common health problems and
the best medicines to treat them.
Look out for the brightly coloured Choose Well
leaflets, posters and banners which will be sent
out to patient areas in the coming weeks.

Rotherham Folk
Pledge Healthier Lifestyles
Over 10,000 people visited the NHS
Rotherham marquee at the Rotherham
Show to check out information and
displays and join in some of the fun
exercise sessions taking place.
The weekend was split into hour long sessions
each with cheap and easy to do physical activity
sessions as a focus, including cheerleading, hula
hooping and Bollywood, Latin and disco dancing.
Other exercise incentives included frisbees,
beach balls and skipping ropes to encourage
Rotherham families to get more active.
Parents were also given information sheets to
encourage participation in traditional children’s
games such as Hopscotch, Please Mr
Crocodile and Sticky Apple.
Members of the public were asked to sign up to the
‘Move It’ campaign by writing a pledge to improve
their lifestyle. Over the two days 625 pledges were
made ranging from stopping smoking and eating
less chocolate to eating more fruit vegetables and
taking up swimming. A range of stalls also provided
information on improving diet and reducing obesity
and raising awareness of hidden sugars and fats in
food and drink.
Several Rotherham VIPs were witnessed in various
states of animation including the mayor hoolahooping
and MP Denis MacShane taking part in a
backcercise class and pledging to take more exercise
by walking and biking to Parliament as part of the
‘Move it’ Rotherham campaign.
Also at the Show was a large inflatable colon
to raise awareness of bowel cancer and the
importance of cancer screening. Visitors were
able to walk through the colon and find out
more about the signs and symptoms of bowel
cancer, the screening programme itself and
speak to the experts.
Kilnhurst surgery
Extension and Refurbishment
Patients at a Rotherham GP practice
are enjoying the benefits of a newly
extended and refurbished surgery.
Work began last winter on the
Alan Tolhurst OBE, chatting with Patient Forum members Roland
Beardsall and Ethel Sleight at the opening.
improvements to the Highthorn Road
Surgery at Kilnhurst. The practice has
over 7000 registered patients living in
Kilnhurst and Swinton. The Scheme
was jointly funded by the practice and
NHS Rotherham.
Three new consulting
rooms have been added
to the premises and
a further treatment
room and the nurse
and health care
assistant rooms have
been refurbished. The
waiting room has been
extended and improved
to provide a more
welcoming environment
for the patients.
The extension was recently opened by
Mr Alan Tolhurst
OBE, Chairman of NHS Rotherham,
alongside patients and local service
providers, who were treated to a guided
tour of the new premises.
The revamped premises provide
new clinics and services for patients,
including specialist diabetes clinics,
Reshape Rotherham, health trainers,
a dietitian and teenage sexual
health clinics in addition to existing
physiotherapy, minor surgery and
mental health counselling. It also
has the capacity to provide satellite
clinics for the Rotherham NHS
Foundation Trust.
Keeping Warm in winter for
Older People in rotherham
NHS Rotherham is undertaking a
research project to find out what helps
and prevents older people in Rotherham
from keeping warm in winter.
The Keeping Warm in Later Life ProjecT
(KWILLT) involves interviews with older
residents and a range of health and
social care staff. Early findings reveal
a complex range of factors influence
older people’s ability to keep warm.
These factors include:
• having family nearby;
• income;
• the type of housing lived in;
• access to information.
So far the results are showing two major
influences are social relationships and
interaction with modern technology. The
social relationships older people have
with their immediate families, neighbours
and communities are important. How
well they connect with the other people
and with information via the phone,
the internet, as well as newspapers,
magazines, radio and television have an
effect on their ability to heat their homes
and gain access to any help they need.
The KWILLT study has found that many
older people struggle with modern
technology such as heating equipment
as well as the use of direct debits and
internet banking to pay their bills.
Masterchef style
competition to make their own
pizzas from scratch.
The children, along with their
parents were shown how to
make their pizzas by Magna
Adventure Centre’s own Master
Chef, Stephen Harrison, and
their efforts were judged by
the Mayor of Rotherham,
Councillor Rose McNeeley and
Alan Tolhurst, Chairman of NHS
Rotherham. The winners were
decided based on their use
of fresh fruit and vegetables
that make up part of their daily
5-a-day and low fat ingredients
as toppings.
The cooking competition is
part of the “Maltby Masterchef”
initiative run by NHS Rotherham,
and aims to encourage families
to make healthier food choices
by providing the knowledge
and skills to prepare food that
is tasty, healthy and easy to
make. The idea is to show that
even unhealthy take-aways such
as pizzas can be turned into
quick and simple meals for the
family by making it at home and
choosing the right ingredients.
This event at Stepping Stones
Children’s Centre in Maltby is
the first of a series of cooking
events, which will be held
in Maltby from September
2010 to March 2011. The
competitions will be run in a
range of age groups, focus on
family participation and involve
community representatives. The
winning meals from each event
will be printed on to recipe cards
and distributed to local shops
and community centres.
The next event takes place on
3rd November at Maltby Fire
Station and will see fire fighters
‘cooking off’ against one another
to produce a healthy, tasty meal.
This will be a public event and
will include demonstrations in
putting out a chip pan fire and a
car extrication display – feel free to
