St<strong>and</strong>ard 12 - Medical <strong>and</strong> other emergencies<br />

[Safe <strong>and</strong> effective care]<br />

If there is an emergency while you are attending the dental service, the dental team is trained<br />

to deal with it.<br />

1. Your dental service has an up-to-date written protocol <strong>for</strong> dealing with recognised medical<br />

<strong>and</strong> dental emergencies.<br />

2. The whole team is suitably trained in dealing with emergencies <strong>and</strong> knows how to respond<br />

at any time.<br />

3. Your dental team keeps its resuscitation <strong>and</strong> emergency care skills up-to-date <strong>and</strong> meets<br />

the General <strong>Dental</strong> Council’s continuing professional development recommendations in<br />

relation to medical emergencies.<br />

4. Your dental service has the appropriate equipment <strong>and</strong> drugs <strong>for</strong> treating medical<br />

emergencies. The equipment is kept in working order. All drugs kept by the service are<br />

within their expiry date <strong>and</strong> are stored safely.<br />

5. The dental team is trained <strong>and</strong> will know what to do if there is a fire, or if the premises<br />

need to be evacuated.<br />
