Mentors sought
to inspire the
next generation
INSIDE…
New member benefits
Take a look at the new lifestyle benefits that
RSC Membership offers
see page 12
The Chemistry: The Next Generation project
is seeking chemical industrialists and academics
to act as mentors for sixth form students and
inspire them to continue their studies on to
university.
Chemistry: The Next Generation (C:TNG)
aims to promote the excitement of chemical
sciences as a subject to school students that are
underrepresented in higher education and
demonstrate the good career opportunities
available.
C:TNG is a collaboration led and supported
by the RSC between 12 universities, three
pharmaceutical companies, and two Sector
Skills Councils. The two-year pilot is being
carried out in three regions: the Northwest,
London and the East Midlands.
Kate Burrell, national coordinator for the
project, explained how rewarding the role of a
mentor can be and how it can help students:
“The students in the programme have no
clear heritage of higher education, so a mentor
can play a critical role as a source of advice and
information. Mentors can have a direct impact
on the life choices an individual makes.”
Kate detailed what qualities are needed
to become a mentor and some of the duties
involved: “We are looking for people in the
three pilot areas with an interest in helping
others to develop and a commitment to life
long learning. They need to be good listeners,
good communicators, be friendly and
approachable. No previous experience is
needed as mentors will be thoroughly briefed.
“It’s important that you are fully committed
to your role and you can be relied upon for
the duration of the programme, which will be
between 3-6 months.
“As a minimum, after meeting your mentee
face to face, you need to be available to mentor
your student via email and telephone at least
monthly throughout the project. But there will
be opportunities to extend involvement.”
One of the main activities of the C:TNG
project involves universities hosting events to
enthuse and excite school students. Over the
past few months there have been successful
over-subscribed events in all the pilot regions.
In the Northwest, Liverpool John Moores
University and Manchester Metropolitan
University hosted “Aspirin Structure and
Synthesis” days and Liverpool University
delivered “Chemistry Masterclasses”. In London,
Kingston University hosted an “Analytical
chemistry” event and University College London
an “Organic Molecules” day. The East Midlands
saw the first events aimed at a younger
audience: a “Magical Chemistry Day”
with a University of Leicester based Harry Potter.
Kate commented on the teamwork displayed
between the project partners: “At all events
there is a strong emphasis on collaboration
between partner universities and industry with
GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer and AstraZeneca,
providing expert career advice for the students.”
THIS ISSUE IS FULL of good news
and I hope you will find it of great
interest. Don’t miss all the brand
new Member benefits which are
now available. There will be further
new benefits in the coming months
and our aim is that many RSC
Members will be able to make
savings in excess of their
subscription.
Further good news is that as a
result of the membership survey
carried out earlier this year, we will
be introducing instalment payments
for 2006. This means that
members can spread the cost of
their subscription over 12 months
(at no additional charge) by direct
debit. We’ll be sending you further
details about the scheme.
The period from September to
December is a particularly busy one
for the RSC. We have major
recruitment activity in the
Universities and RSC staff will be
making their presence felt in many
countries worldwide, whether
through attending exhibitions,
taking part in conferences or selling
RSC journals and other publications.
These activities all support our
strategy of increasing the
international reach of your society
and advancing the chemical
sciences worldwide.
Teachers become pupils
THE 18th BIENNIAL CONFERENCE for US and his talk “Fascinating Facets of Food Chemistry”
Canadian High School Teachers, ChemEd debunked many of the myths associated with
2005, was held between the 31 July and 4 ‘natural’ foods. Penny Le Couteur of Capilano
August at the University of British Columbia, College, Vancouver, encouraged scientists
Vancouver, Canada. The conference attracted to go on the attack when confronted with
over 800 secondary and post-secondary adverts referring to ‘natural materials
teachers, giving them the opportunity to containing no chemicals’ and other such
share classroom and laboratory ideas.
statements in the press. She demonstrated
The conference programme consisted of a that the most toxic substances known are
mixture of lectures, lecture demonstrations, indeed natural with many ‘chemicals’ such as
lab and ICT based hands-on sessions, and a sarin and dioxin being well down the list.
‘Signature Demonstration Series’. Talks ranged Colin Osborne, RSC Education Manager,
from the content of courses, pedagogy, and Schools and Colleges, said of the conference:
laboratory methods to more futuristic topics, “One of the highlights for me was the ability
such as how artificial intelligence could affect to talk to the developers of novel interactive
the world of chemistry.
internet resources from around the world.
The conference opened and closed with In the next few months the RSC education
talks discussing how chemicals are portrayed department will be looking at how these
in the media and perceived by the public. resources can be applied to chemistry
Ariel Fenster of McGill University, Montreal, in education in the UK.”
Two new weeklies announced
TWO MORE OF the RSC’s journals are to be
published weekly from January 2006. Dalton
Transactions and Physical Chemistry Chemical
Physics (PCCP), both leading journals in their
respective fields, will be doubling in frequency
to 48 issues.
Prompted by the continued growth of high
quality submissions to these two respected
journals, the move to
weekly
publication will
be accompanied
by a new format
to further improve
the readability and
attractiveness of
the content.
Dalton
Transactions,
celebrating 35 years
of publication in
2006, will lead the
way in the general
inorganic chemistry
journals sector by
becoming the first weekly journal in the field.
PCCP has recently seen its Impact Factor rise
for the fourth successive year. In addition, the
journal has the highest immediacy index of
any physical chemistry journal – an indication
of the urgent and topical work that it
publishes.
Valerie Simpson, RSC Product Marketing
Manager, said: “Following the highly successful
transition to weekly publication earlier this year
of Chemical Communications and Journal of
Materials Chemistry, this latest announcement
reinforces the RSC’s commitment to the
development of its journals. We’ll be able to
bring you the latest research faster than ever.”
Top students gain high
Olympic honours
A TEAM OF FOUR A-level students have all
secured medals in this year’s International
Chemistry Olympiad in Taipei. Competing against
students from 59 countries Christopher Kerr
from Winchester College won a gold medal for
the team, scoring 95 per cent in the theory test,
while Oliver Holton of Manchester Grammar
School, Ben Pilgrim of Parmiter’s School and
James Shepherd of Colchester Royal Grammar
School were each awarded a bronze medal.
The International Chemistry Olympiad has
been running since 1968 and is designed to
promote friendship and co-operation among
pupils and the exchange of experience among
teachers. The UK team was selected following
two qualifying rounds of tests run by the RSC
and open to all UK schools and colleges. The
four selected sixthformers met and stayed at
Cambridge University for one week, where they
trained with Cambridge’s Peter Wothers and
Chas McCaw from Winchester College, before
leaving for Taipei.
In the finals the students’ chemical knowledge
and practical skills were tested in two five-hour
exams, one theory and one practical. In between
the competitive sections, the team and its
mentors took part in a programme of social
activities, including a tour of the world’s tallest
MORE THAN 2000 delegates gathered at the
7th World Congress of Chemical Engineering in
Glasgow on 10–14 July. The welcome
reception, sponsored by the RSC, took place at
the Glasgow Science Centre on the banks of the
river Clyde.
The opening plenary lecture was presented by
Nobel prize-winning chemist, Jean-Marie Lehn
of the Université Louis Pasteur. RSC President
Simon Campbell introduced Lehn, pointing out
the interest that the IChemE and the RSC have in
exploring ways of facilitating a closer
interaction between the two communities and
that a real opportunity exists for jointly tackling
the big issues faced by the chemical sciences.
Professor Lehn called for closer collaborations
between chemical engineers and chemists to
The honours winning UK Olympiad Team
building – Taipei City 101. Head mentor Phil
Copley said: “The team put in a very pleasing
performance. The boys mixed well with the other
students and were a credit to the UK.”
Next year’s Olympiad will be held in Korea
at Yeungnam University. Online registration
for upper sixthform students and past papers
from the competition are available through
Lecture highlights opportunities
for chemical collaboration
enable development of the next generation
of chemical products. He went on to explain
how implementation of molecular recognition
allows the purposeful design of supramolecular
systems and how this self-fabrication approach,
facilitated by the molecule itself, could
revolutionise nano-fabrication techniques.
According to Lehn, the work needed to
realise these advancements on a commercial
scale could lie in the hands of chemical
engineers: “Without chemical engineers we
don’t have the hands to transform the lab work
into something practical,” he said. “There is a lot
of interesting and challenging work for chemical
engineers in scaling-up and finding that extra
20% yield, and also finding products for the
work done by the chemists.”
INTEREST GROUP
Protein and Peptide
Science Group
THE PROTEIN AND Peptide Science Group
(PPSG) aims to encourage a wider
understanding of the structure, function and
application of peptides and proteins. Our
interdisciplinary approach is reflected in the
diversity of our members: chemists, biologists,
geneticists, bioinformaticists and medics.
The group organizes meetings to promote
our aims. This year started with a highly
successful Alzheimer meeting in Dublin
in March, Molecular Mechanisms of
Neurodegeneration. We also ran a minisymposium,
Amyloidogenic Proteins and Their
Therapeutic Implications, at BioScience 2005 in
Glasgow in July, where there was good
mixing between the chemists and biologists.
The group is involved in BioNano 3: An
International Conference on Bionanotechnology
Research to be held in Brighton, England later
this month (19–21 September). This will bring
together scientists working on biological
applications of nanotechnology.
The PPSG has formal links with the European
Peptide Society, the Australian Peptide Society
and Theme Panels 2 and 4 of the Biochemical
on nanochemistry
TEACHING NANOCHEMISTRY TO students is
about to become easier, thanks to the arrival
of one of the latest RSC
books. Nanochemistry:
A Chemical Approach to
Nanomaterials has been
written by Geoffrey Ozin,
who is well-known in the
field, and his colleague
Andre Arsenault, who
are both based at the
University of Toronto in
Canada.
Primarily designed for
teaching and based on
material used in an
existing graduate course,
this comprehensive and
interdisciplinary book
is well illustrated with
graphical
representations of nanomaterials.
Problem-solving
exercises and case-studies add to the benefits
for lecturers and their students. An additional
benefit for RSC Members is the price of just
£25.75 (compared with the full price of £39.95).
Council focuses on RSC strategy
COUNCIL MEMBERS FOCUSED on the RSC
strategy when they met for a wide-ranging
facilitated session on 14 July. They debated the
further development of the three current RSC
goals in the learned and professional areas:
broadening the RSC footprint, expanding its
influence in Europe and enhancing its image.
A number of challenges were identified. For
example, the RSC needs to look hard at how the
globalisation of scientific research and
development will affect its strategy. New
developments in the application of chemical
sciences also need to be analysed and will
influence the RSC’s support for education and
training and its continuing professional
development programmes.
The meeting facilitator posed demanding
questions about the capability gaps that might
hinder effective implementation of RSC strategy,
teaching over the years, while his research
work is widely published and recognised
throughout the world.
Tim Fishlock, Managing
Editor of the RSC’s
books programme said:
“We’re delighted to be
publishing this new
textbook from such a
high profile author as
Professor Ozin.”
Philip Ball, renowned
science writer and 2005
winner of the Aventis
Prize for Science,
commented: “A text that
covers all the basic
concepts of nanoscale
chemistry and
materials science, and
sets them in their
historical context, has
been long overdue. But
here it is – not just a comprehensive guide
to the field, but a recipe book for the future.
the key groupings with which RSC must develop
relationships, and how to ensure that the
strategy can be seen to meet the needs of the
many current and possible future stakeholders.
The emerging strategic direction will be
developed with input from the General Assembly
when it meets in November, as well as RSC
boards and other groupings. In implementing
the strategy, it will be essential to ensure that
the RSC does not spread its resources too thinly
across too broad a range of activities. It is
therefore inevitable that some activities will have
to be refocused if new opportunities are to be
Young researchers learn
from the greatest minds
(from left) Philip Humphreys, Kenny Arnold, and Andrew Baldwin enjoy lunch with the Laureates
EACH SUMMER, NOBEL Prize winners attend a
week-long meeting at Lindau on Lake Constance
in Germany. Up to 700 young researchers and
students from around the world come to listen to
the Laureates’ lectures and to engage in discussions
with them in an open and informal setting.
This year was a special interdisciplinary
meeting with 44 Nobel Laureates. The RSC
chose three PhD students from the UK to attend.
Following a rigorous applications procedure, the
three chosen were: Kenny Arnold (Durham),
Andrew Baldwin (Cambridge) and Philip
Humphreys (Oxford). Below, Kenny Arnold gives
his view of the week:
The opportunity to attend the 55th Meeting of
Nobel Prize winners in Lindau was a great honour,
particularly as this was only the second
interdisciplinary meeting. Laureates and students
came together from the fields of chemistry,
physics, physiology and medicine. As the
boundaries between the traditional disciplines blur,
the need for interdisciplinary cooperation and
discussion is increasingly important in the search
for new breakthroughs.
There was an excellent balance between
lectures, round table talks and smaller group
discussions, as well as the chance to speak to the
Laureates in person at social events. Several
discussions addressed the extremely important
issues of global warming and energy shortfall.
It was a real pleasure to liaise with the Laureates
in an informal setting. A highlight of the week was
the chance to enjoy lunch with Professor Sir Harry
Kroto, where we talked about the ‘secrets’ to his
distinctive presentation style. Professor Richard
Roberts also joined us, and it was interesting to
listen to his viewpoints regarding world politics,
along with his current work at New England
Biolabs.
The beautiful island of Lindau undoubtedly
helped us with one of the meeting’s main aims,
which was to make contacts with other young
researchers from around the world. I enjoyed
exploring their ideas and socialising with them. It
was interesting to find out their experiences and
how geography is unimportant in how a scientific
mind identifies and tackles problems.
Several pieces of advice proffered by the
Laureates stand out in my mind. Professor Klaus
von Klitzing told us to question everything, even if
it was a Nobel Laureate that told you something!
Professor Roderick Mackinnon said that you must
pursue what you find interesting – presumably only
then will you be prepared to endure the setbacks
and disappointments that are almost inevitable.
Finally, Professor Sir Harry Kroto stressed the
importance of a work-life balance, and the need
for additional interests outside research. Indeed,
moments of inspiration can come at anytime,
perhaps especially whilst taking time out.
Although it is not exactly a realistic career
expectation to become a Nobel Prize winner, the
advice the Laureates offer and qualities they
possess are something that we as researchers can
aspire to. The meeting was a truly unforgettable
experience. If you are presented with such an
opportunity, I would strongly encourage that you
seize it without hesitation.
Advisors find
out more about
chemical careers
EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES FOR chemical
scientists in careers ranging from the nuclear
industry to the role of a patent attorney were
highlighted at a conference for university
Careers Advisers in July.
More than 30 advisers from universities
across the UK attended the meeting held at
the RSC in London. The conference outlined
employment opportunities for chemical
science graduates and offered delegates
support in their roles as advisers to
undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Stuart Young of GlaxoSmithKline and David
Alker of Pfizer spoke about opportunities in
the pharmaceutical industry. David Moreton
from Lubrizol discussed careers in the fuel and
lubricant industry and Lee Peck from Nexia
Solutions described employment prospects for
chemists in the nuclear industry. All the
speakers emphasised the skills, attributes and
qualifications required by graduate employers.
Ivor Harrison from Withers and Rogers LLP,
patent and trademark attorneys, explained the
role of the patent attorney and a discussion
about career paths of PhD graduates was led
by Charlie Ball from Graduate Prospects.
Delegates declared the conference a
resounding success. Jan Moore, Head of
Manchester Metropolitan University Careers
Service, said: “It was definitely well worth
the early get up and train trip down from
Manchester! The speakers had been extremely
well briefed and delivered their presentations
with obvious enthusiasm for their work.
“Tutors in our chemistry department have
also gratefully received the notes and handouts
from the day for their departmental careers files
and have asked if they can be invited too next
time.”
MOTOR AND HOME INSURANCE
Baxters Streetwise – Member Benefit Scheme
THE STREETWISE SCHEME offers you significant savings on your car and home insurance renewals without compromising cover or service.
All RSC members in England, Scotland & Wales (including spouses/partners living at the same address) are eligible to apply.
It is a simple offer where you save 20% off your current home insurance renewal premium and 15% off your current car insurance renewal
premium and you receive legal expenses insurance free of charge.
The savings are genuine as they apply to your current insurer’s renewal
premiums, so you avoid all the hassle of shopping around when your
insurance is due for renewal. You save both time and money.
As soon as you receive your renewal notice from your current
insurance company, call the Streetwise hotline on 020 8554 1100,
Monday to Friday 9–5, and have your RSC membership number
ready. It is advisable to have your renewal notice to hand when you
call.
The Streetwise scheme has been running for over 5 years and while
there are some eligibility criteria, (for example all drivers must be
over 21), 90% of applicants have qualified. Minimum premiums do
apply (£210 for Comprehensive Motor; £157.50 for Third Party Fire
and Theft; and £125 for Home Insurance) so if you already have a
fantastically good deal this offer may not be even better, but it’s worth
checking.
Baxters are W B Baxter Limited, insurance brokers and independent
financial advisers. Baxters are authorised and regulated by the Financial
Services Authority, register number is 146480. Details can be checked on
the FSA website www.fsa.gov.uk/register
For the avoidance of doubt, please note that the RSC accepts no responsibility whatsoever for these products and services and makes no
recommendations. Any transaction/contract for the supply of these products or services will be entirely between an individual RSC member and the
company or organisation concerned. Should an RSC member have any cause for complaint, such concerns must be raised directly with the supplier,
although the RSC Membership Sales department would appreciate being kept informed.
RSC MEMBERS BASED
enjoyed the first event of
the newly-formed RSC US
West Subsection in late June
– a kayak tour on the Pacific
Ocean just off the La Jolla
Shores, near San Diego,
California.
The group spent two
hours paddling out on
the water looking at the
sea-caves, kelp forest and
California sea-lions. Of
added scientific
interest was the red tide,
an algal bloom that turned
the normally blue water a
rusty red colour, and which practising their moves are: (l to r) James and Tealar Henshilwood, Abu
Subsection also has an email discussion list to
Janet White, one of the San Diego committee which members may subscribe by sending their
members who took part, said: “The event was email address to: wcd-inf-qjoin@list.rsc.org
a great way to get to know other RSC members
in San Diego and to form useful contacts in the
local biotech industry.”
