Mulat Abegaz (PhD), Ethiopian, birth date 02 April 1964, Educational background PhD in<br />
Natural Science in 1997, MSc in Chemistry in 1990, BSc in Chemistry in 1986 and Diploma in<br />
Social Science in 1995. Working experience (total about 20 years): more than 11 years at<br />
different capacity as researcher, expert, and department head at different organizations<br />
(Ministry <strong>of</strong> Industry, Environmental Protection Authority, Quality and Standards Authority <strong>of</strong><br />
Ethiopia) and since the last eight years as consultant in different international organizations<br />
(UNIDO, GTZ, World Bank, WTO, ACP-EU-TDP, ESA-EPA, etc). Specific field <strong>of</strong> interest<br />
include mainly food safety & technology (HACCP, GAP/GMP/GHP, GlobalGAP, BRC and<br />
ISO 22000), quality & environmental management systems (ISO 9001 and ISO 14001),<br />
laboratory accreditation (ISO 17025), food control systems and food trade, SPS/TBT related<br />
issues <strong>of</strong> WTO and overall conformity assessment structures. Currently General Manager <strong>of</strong><br />
Quality, Inspection, Testing and Certification (QITC) Service PLC and Ass. Pr<strong>of</strong>. <strong>of</strong> food<br />
safety and quality <strong>of</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry and Department <strong>of</strong> Chemical Engineering <strong>of</strong><br />
Addis Ababa University, President <strong>of</strong> the Chemical <strong>Society</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ethiopia, & V/ President <strong>of</strong><br />
Ethiopian Inventors Association.<br />
Mr. Yitbarek Alemu, has got his first degree in 1977 in Chemistry from Addis Ababa<br />
University, Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry and served for more than 31 years in the public and<br />
private owned industries in different capacities that include technical & production head,<br />
quality control head, R&D head, and researcher. Main interest includes industrial research<br />
and providing technological solution for technological problems. Received national award<br />
from Ethiopian Science and Technology Commission and an outstanding award from the<br />
Chemical Engineers <strong>Society</strong> and the Chemical <strong>Society</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ethiopia for his invention to produce<br />
industrial grade starch and adhesive from Enset and industrial sucess. Currently, General<br />
Manager <strong>of</strong> Yitbarek Alemu Starch, Chemicals and Adhesive Industry (YASCAI) that produce<br />
starch for textile and paper industries and adhesives for various industries. YASCAI has<br />
designed, installed, and manufactured most <strong>of</strong> the equipments require for the starch and<br />
adhesive processing plant. Mr. Yitbarek has served as executive committee member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Chemical <strong>Society</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ethiopia for a minimum <strong>of</strong> two terms.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>. Theodros Solomon has been a member <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry, Addis Ababa<br />
University since 1972. He has lectured at both the undergraduate and graduate programmes<br />
and has served as Department Head for two terms, as Dean <strong>of</strong> the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Science, and<br />
Dean <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Graduate Studies. Besides these academic administrations, he has<br />
also participated in numerous department and university-wide committees. He was the<br />
founding secretary <strong>of</strong> the Chemical <strong>Society</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ethiopia, and also served as President <strong>of</strong> the<br />
<strong>Society</strong>. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the Editorial Board <strong>of</strong> the Bulletin <strong>of</strong> the Chemical <strong>Society</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Ethiopia, and presently is a member <strong>of</strong> the International Editorial Board <strong>of</strong> the Bulletin as well<br />
as <strong>of</strong> SINET: Ethiop. J. Sci. and the Ethiopian Journal <strong>of</strong> Education. He has worked with the<br />
Ministry <strong>of</strong> Education in their <strong>Committee</strong> for Charting the Future Direction <strong>of</strong> Higher Education<br />
in Ethiopia, and the <strong>Committee</strong> for Capacity Building in Higher Education and . His<br />
contribution in the Ethiopian Science and Technology Commission include serving as
<strong>Local</strong> <strong>Management</strong> <strong>Committee</strong> <strong>Biographies</strong><br />
Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Steering <strong>Committee</strong> for preparing Country Papers on Basic Sciences in<br />
Ethiopia.<br />
At the international level, he has been a Member <strong>of</strong> the Advisory <strong>Committee</strong> on Higher<br />
Education in Africa, UNESCO Office, Dakar, Senegal, a member <strong>of</strong> the Scientific Advisory<br />
Board <strong>of</strong> the Organization for the Prohibition <strong>of</strong> Chemical Weapons (OPCW) at The Hague,<br />
The Netherlands, and <strong>of</strong> their Research Review <strong>Committee</strong>. He is presently a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Reference Group <strong>of</strong> IPICS (International Programme in Chemical Science <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong><br />
Uppsala, Sweden) and reviews research proposals in Chemistry from developing countries in<br />
Africa, Asia and Latin America.<br />
His research interests include electrochemistry at liquid – liquid interfaces; biosensors;<br />
chemical education; photoelectrochemistry; electrochemical detection <strong>of</strong> pollutants.<br />

Yonas Chebude received his MSc in Chemical Engineering from the Technische Hochschule<br />
Leuna Merseburg, Germany. He worked for some years as a project consultant in Addis<br />
Ababa, Ethiopia before pursuing his academic career to receive his PhD in Inorganic<br />
Chemistry from the University <strong>of</strong> Wuppertal, Germany. His PhD research focussed on basic<br />
research in fluorine and boron chemistry. He joined the Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry, Addis<br />
Ababa University in 2000 as an Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor. He has been teaching Inorganic<br />
Chemistry, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level and has supervised more than<br />
30 MSc theses and research projects.<br />
He served as the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs for the Faculty <strong>of</strong><br />
Science (December 2005- September 2007).<br />
Dr. Yonas Chebude is currently Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the Department <strong>of</strong> Chemistry, Addis<br />
Ababa University and is actively involved in both teaching and research. He is the project<br />
coordinator <strong>of</strong> the Green/Sustainable Chemistry Unit at the Department, which tries to<br />
promote Green/Sustainable Chemistry in Higher Education in Ethiopia. He is also an<br />
executive member <strong>of</strong> the Federation <strong>of</strong> African Societies <strong>of</strong> Chemistry (FASC).<br />
Dr Ahmed Mustefa, is Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>. <strong>of</strong> Computational Chemistry at the Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Chemistry, Addis Ababa University and the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate<br />
Program <strong>of</strong> the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Science, Addis Ababa University. Ahmed received his PhD from<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Innsbruck, Austria and was a JSPS postdoctoral fellow at the Department <strong>of</strong><br />
Analytical Chemistry, Nagoya University, from 2002-2004.<br />
He is member <strong>of</strong> the Executive <strong>Committee</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Chemical <strong>Society</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ethiopia and Executive<br />
Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Federation <strong>of</strong> African Societies <strong>of</strong> Chemistry.
