Members of SAAD and colleagues, it is with great pleasure that<br />

we bring you <strong>the</strong> SAAD Conference <strong>for</strong> 2008, with <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>me<br />

of incorporating safety as central to our agenda of providing<br />

safe and effective pain and anxiety control <strong>for</strong> dental patients.<br />

Conscious sedation can be safely managed, by setting in place<br />

<strong>the</strong> knowledge, skill and attitudes to make a safe clinical environment.<br />

Today we will be illustrating how an understanding of<br />

processes, infection control, effective audit, learning from experience<br />

and an understanding of human factors can contribute<br />

to achieving excellence in dental practice.<br />

As champion of patients and practitioners, SAAD invites you to our<br />

Conference, where we have assembled speakers who are at <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>efront<br />

of safety issues that dental practitioners need to embrace.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Speakers<br />

Diana Terry<br />

Diana is currently President of SAAD and works as a consultant<br />

anaes<strong>the</strong>tist in Bristol. She has an interest in <strong>the</strong> use of<br />

simulation <strong>for</strong> postgraduate education, and is a member of Resuscitation<br />

Council (UK). Diana is also a member of <strong>the</strong> ADA<br />

Council.<br />

Lisa Howells<br />

Professional Officer, Clinical Governance Support and Development<br />

Unit, Welsh Assembly Government. Lisa has worked<br />

as a GDP and in <strong>the</strong> CDS, including providing care under GA.<br />

She has a Masters in Community Dental Health and has been<br />

involved in dental public health, and special-care dentistry. She<br />

now with <strong>the</strong> CGSDU, linking with NHS organisations in S E<br />

Wales and working particularly with clinical teams.<br />

Bridget James<br />

Patient Safety Manager, NHS South West. Bridget is a qualified<br />

nurse & midwife with extensive experience in both clinical<br />

and managerial roles. Bridget has been a Supervisor of Midwives<br />

and a Clinical Risk Manager <strong>for</strong> a large Acute Trust. She<br />

has served as a member of <strong>the</strong> National Patient Safety Agency<br />

developing her interest in incident causation & investigation.<br />

Leo Strunin<br />

Prof Strunin has had an illustrious career having held <strong>the</strong><br />

Chairs in Anaes<strong>the</strong>tics at King’s College Hospital, <strong>the</strong> University<br />

Of Calgary, Alberta and at Barts & <strong>The</strong> Royal London<br />

Medical School. He is now Emeritus Professor of Anaes<strong>the</strong>sia<br />

at Queen Mary’s. Past President of both <strong>the</strong> Royal College of<br />

Anaes<strong>the</strong>tists and <strong>the</strong> AAGBI he has had a great interest in<br />

general anaes<strong>the</strong>sia and sedation <strong>for</strong> dentistry.<br />

Martin Ful<strong>for</strong>d<br />

Originally trained as a microbiologist and spent 13 years as<br />

a medical microbiologist. He retrained as a dentist & spent<br />

17 years working as a GDP when he combined dentistry<br />

with research into infection control. Now retired from clinical<br />

practice he is investigating <strong>the</strong> possible transmission of<br />

vCJD via dental instruments. A member of <strong>the</strong> Health and<br />

Science Committee of <strong>the</strong> BDA, with a particular interest in<br />

infection control.<br />

Gerry Tyrer<br />

Gerry specialty is in sedation <strong>for</strong> dentistry. He has worked<br />

in <strong>the</strong> dental salaried service, spent three years in <strong>the</strong> army<br />

& taught sedation. He has also taught on <strong>the</strong> First Response<br />

course. He was recently deployed to Afghanistan with <strong>the</strong><br />

Territorial Army<br />

Peter Milgrom<br />

Professor Milgrom is <strong>the</strong> SAAD Visiting Professor in Pain<br />

and Anxiety Control at King’s College London. He is <strong>the</strong><br />

Director of <strong>the</strong> Dental Fears Research Clinic, where he<br />

maintains a practice limited to <strong>the</strong> care of anxious patients,<br />

and Professor of Dental Public Health Sciences at <strong>the</strong> University<br />

of Washington, Seattle. He trained at <strong>the</strong> University<br />

of Cali<strong>for</strong>nia, San Francisco and joined <strong>the</strong> University of<br />

Washington in 1974.<br />

Tim Newton<br />

Tim is Professor of Psychology as Applied to Dentistry at<br />

<strong>the</strong> King’s College London Dental Institute. In dentistry his<br />

particular interests include oral health-related quality of life,<br />

<strong>the</strong> working life of <strong>the</strong> dental team and patients’ perceptions<br />

of treatment. Outside dentistry he has worked with people<br />

with intellectual disability.<br />

Raj Rattan<br />

Raj is a GDP, Associate Dean in <strong>the</strong> London Deanery and a<br />

dento-legal adviser at Dental Protection. He has written a<br />

number of textbooks on various aspects of dental practice<br />

including clinical governance, quality and risk management.<br />

He has lectured widely on <strong>the</strong>se and o<strong>the</strong>r aspects of general<br />

dental practice both in <strong>the</strong> UK and overseas.<br />
