THE ART OF TAILGATING
Tips from the makers of SAAG’S® Specialty Meats
Tailgating – it's not just for football anymore. Baseball season serves up good weather,
ideal for tailgate parties and outdoor grilling. Make your tailgate party a home run with
these tips from Saag’s.
The Plan. Pick a baseball venue
and round up the usual players
for a game day cookout. Check
on your team’s Website for
approved tailgate lots. Start your
party early enough so you can
get to your seats in time for
batting practice. Be sure to buy a
block of tickets well ahead of
time.
The Food. Bland food and
boring flavors are out of the
question when tailgating. Start
by choosing the protein, such as
SAAG’S® sausages and
frankfurters. There’s nothing like
a hot, juicy, flavorful sausage or
frank right off the grill. SAAG’S®
sausages are fully cooked, which
takes the guesswork out of
knowing when they’re done. For
the rest of the menu, plan dishes
by category so you have a good
variety – appetizers, sides,
vegetable and fruit salads,
sweets, and beverages.
The Recipes. If you like to practice your outdoor cooking skills, download Grilling with
SAAG’S® Sausages for a selection of recipes, such as SAAG’S® Brat Tub, Sausage
Fajitas, Buffalo Style Bangers, as well as sausage grilling tips.
The Fun. Suit up in team colors and bring your gloves so you can snag those foul balls
come game time, and use them for a tailgate catch. Hold a baseball trivia contest. Have
some prizes - a team shirt, a hat, or a pair of tickets to the next game. See if you can
have the name of your party flashed across the message board.
The Sun. During baseball season, chances are the weather will be on the warm side.
This puts food safety front and center in your party plans so you'll need lots of ice to
keep food properly chilled. You'll also want to bring long-sleeved tops, hats, sunglasses
and plenty of sun block.

The List. A list can make things run smoothly and helps avoid your asking the neighbors
if they have some mustard to spare.
1. Grill (portable)
2. Charcoal (quick light)
3. Charcoal starter fluid (if you don't buy quick light coals or chimney)
4. Gloves or mitts
5. Tongs and/or spatula
6. Jug of water (for safety, make sure coals are completely out before leaving)
7. Trash bags (for trash and to cover the grill on the way home)
8. Cooler
9. Ice (packing ice and ice for beverages)
10. Meat (in self-sealing plastic food storage bags)
11. Seasonings (salt, pepper, etc.)
12. Barbeque sauce, ketchup, and SAAG’S mustard
13. Appetizers, side dishes, desserts
14. Beverages (cans on ice eliminate the need for cups and clean ice)
15. Eating tools (plates, cups, napkins, utensils)
16. Sanitary wipes
17. Storage containers or bags for leftovers
18. Folding chairs
19. Small work table (or use a big trash bag over the tailgate)
20. Decorations (optional but fun)
21. Music
22. Toys and games
23. First aid kit
WHEW! The first pack-out is always the hardest. Once you've tailgated a few times, it's
easy to get ready for a tailgate party.
The Rules.
For successful grilling:
1. Preheat the grill.
2. Ignite your fire with a chimney or paraffin cubes if you want to be eco-friendly.
3. Keep the lid down to reduce flare-ups and to allow for more even cooking.
4. Coat food with oil, not the grill, for even browning and to prevent flare ups.
For safe grilling:
1. Follow the instructions in your owner’s manual.
2. Keep your grill at least 10 feet from combustible materials.
3. Never add lighter fluid to a lit fire. Bad, bad idea.
4. Never use a grill that wobbles, leans, or is unstable in any way.
5. Keep shirtsleeves and garments out of the line of fire -- literally.
6. If you have long hair, pull it back.
7. Keep a fire extinguisher within reach. Never pour water on a grease fire. Instead,
cover a charcoal grill and close all vents; turn off gas grills at the source.
8. Keep children and pets a safe distance away from a hot grill.
9. When you’re finished using your charcoal grill, close the lid and all the vents. Use
water to put the fire out.
