PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES
MOIPONE’s activities include the following;
Information Science Centre
Moipone Academy established an informational science centre for learners to get educational material and
learn about different science careers and institutions.
Zitikeni Secondary school principal (Mrs M.A.
Kekana) allocated a 6 x 8 m2 stall for free, to serve
as science information centre. To build the centre,
LJB Transport (Joseph Taetsane) collected unused
scrap furniture from the Pretoria retail and corporate
stores – PnP, Shoprites, Checkers, Spars and Simba
warehouse.
Science material booklets are collected from
SAASTA, DST, MINTEK, Universities, Research
Institutions and science centres. The centre is also
used for educational science shows / video plays
for learners.
Site visits
Moipone Academy organises educational site visits to
exhibitions, companies, institutions and museums.
Zitikeni, Inqayisivele, Boitumelong, Tembisa High and
Thuto Ke Maatla Secondary learners were taken to
International Science, Innovation and Technology
Exhibition (INSITE), Mintek, Megapak, WITS
Planetarium, University of Johannesburg, University of
Pretoria (SCI-ENZA and FABI) Hartebeeshoek Radio
Astronomy Observatory – HartRAO, Johannesburg
Observatory, Sci-BONO, Johannesburg Tourism,
SABS, WITS (Chemistry Labs, Origin Centre and
Planetarium) and NECSA.

Science Talks / Lectures
MOIPONE Academy invites Professionals and PhD/Masters
Students from Universities to give talks about their special
fields. Our organisation MOIPONE ACADEMY (supported by
SAASTA and DST), is hosting an awareness campaign about
Science Careers, in Tembisa since 2007. The main aim of this
project is to engage and focus attention on Science careers,
through the skills and professional help of our South African
scientists. To create awareness about research activities and
to make the learners, students and the public at large to
appreciate reasons why South Africa is involve in science and
thus assist in the Public Understanding of Science. Masters /
Phd students act as role models and encourage learners and
students not only to take up post graduates studies but to retain them in this field and enable them to give
back to their communities.
Schools Outreach Programmes &
Screen plays
MOIPONE Academy visits 13 local secondary
schools to show learners educational videos.
This programme helps us to reach learners who
are unable to visit our centre.

Zoological Gardens:
Joseph Taetsane designed a rat trap cage,
aimed at controlling the infestation of rodents in
Tembisa.
He kept a Brown House snake, which was saved
from being killed by the community.
Moipone Academy intend building a Zoological
garden to keep rodents eating animals and to
educate the community about these animals.
