Robert Smithson<br />

Vice President<br />

Dana Holding Corporation<br />

Rob Smithson is vice president, powertrain<br />

innovations and engineering for Dana Holding<br />

Corporation’s (NYSE: DAN) Light Vehicle<br />

Driveline group. Prior to this, he served as<br />

the chief technical officer and vice president<br />

of business development for Fallbrook<br />

Technologies Inc., and was a co-founder of the<br />

company.<br />

Smithson’s 25 years of experience also<br />

includes stints as group leader of the<br />

Drivetrain Design and NVH group for<br />

Southwest Research Institute, product<br />

development engineering for Ford Motor<br />

Company; vice president of robot design and<br />

a co-founder of ARM Automation, Inc.; as well<br />

as spaceflight hardware engineering for the<br />

McDonnell-Douglas Astronautics Company.<br />

Smithson holds a bachelor’s degree in<br />

Mechanical Engineering from Auburn<br />

University and a master’s degree in Mechanical<br />

Engineering from the University of Texas at<br />

Austin. Additionally, he holds an Executive<br />

Master of Science degree in Science &<br />

Technology Commercialization with honors<br />

from the McCombs School at the University<br />

of Texas at Austin. In 2009, Smithson was<br />

named a Fellow of the Society of Automotive<br />

Engineers (<strong>SAE</strong> <strong>International</strong>).<br />

ABSTRACT<br />

This talk will cover the basic kinematics and<br />

structure of Continously and Infinitely Variable<br />

Planetary devices, which Dana is introducing<br />

to the transmission market. The CVP/IVP has<br />

a unique mechanical configuration that will<br />

be shown to facilitate packaging in FWD,<br />

RWD, and AWD applications. Power path<br />

options available with the CVP/IVP and their<br />

characteristics will also be presented.<br />
