Afrixalus brachycnemis Short-legged Spiny Reed Frog<br />

A small reed frog found in open grassland and edge situations, not a forest species.<br />

Family Ranidae, “Typical” Frogs<br />

Amnirana (formerly known as Hylarana) galamensis Galam White-lipped Frog<br />

This is a widely-distributed species associated with seasonal wetlands; able to survive the dry season<br />

by sheltering in termite mounds.<br />

Phrynobatrachus acridoides Eastern Puddle Frog<br />

A widely distributed, non-forest species.<br />

Phrynobatrachus mababiensis Mababe Puddle Frog<br />

A widely distributed, non-forest species common in many parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Tanzania</strong>.<br />

Ptychadena mascareniensis Mascarene Ridged Frog<br />

This is a species which is widely distributed in a variety <strong>of</strong> habitats but not associated with forest.<br />

Ptychadena mossambica Mozambique Ridged Frog<br />

As the name suggests, this Ridged Frog is known from southern as well as eastern Africa; it is<br />

associated with open areas and woodlands, not forest.<br />

Ptychadena oxyrhynchus Sharp-nosed Ridged Frog<br />

This species is not associated with forest and is widely distributed in more open habitats.<br />

Pyxicephalus sp. African Bullfrog<br />

Two forms are now recognized, P. adspersus, the Giant African Bullfrog, found over much <strong>of</strong> central<br />

and southern Africa and also in <strong>Tanzania</strong>, and P. edulis. This latter form is known in <strong>Tanzania</strong> mainly<br />

from the coastal strip. Not detected during our sampling, but reported as present by local residents.<br />

Family Rhacophoridae, Foam Nest Frogs<br />

Chiromantis xerampelina Foam Nest Frog<br />

This distinctive species was reported as occurring by local residents but not surprisingly given the dry<br />

conditions <strong>of</strong> our field sessions, was not detected by our sampling.<br />

Family Pipidae, African Clawed Frogs<br />

Xenopus muelleri, Mueller’s Clawed frog<br />

An aquatic species, common on the East African coast.<br />
