Name: Yadira Roggeveen
Title: MSc, MD
Biography:
Born in the Netherlands, Yadira Roggeveen studied medicine at VU University. After
graduating, she worked for the Public Health Department of the city of Amsterdam. After
this she started the training as a Dutch Tropical Doctor, after which her first placement was
at Endulen Hospital, Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania (2008-2010). Working as a
general physician in this remote hospital, her focus was on maternal health and paediatrics
and started the Safe Motherhood Project at Endulen Hospital. She became involved in
research by Bugando University College of Health Sciences and Calgary University. After her
return in the Netherlands she started working at Athena Institute, where she combines this
research with teaching aside clinical work at the obstetrics and gynaecology department at
the Sint Lucas Andreas Hospital in Amsterdam.
Research Project:
Her study evolved from her research participation at Endulen Hospital, Ngorongoro,
northern Tanzania. Access to skilled attendance at childbirth and Emergency Obstetric Care
needs to increase to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity. By linking communities and
health services we might be better able to achieve this and thus Millennium Development
Goal number 5. How to do this, is not straightforward. Yadira Roggeveen examines the
situation at Endulen, Tanzania to gain knowledge on how to further develop these linkages.
