The head and neck regions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body contain<br />

numerous neural, muscular, ductal, and v<strong>as</strong>cular<br />

structures that impact piercing strategies. This<br />

course will provide an overview <strong>of</strong> ana<strong>to</strong>mical<br />

structures <strong>to</strong> piercers in an attempt <strong>to</strong> familiarize<br />

participants with head and neck structure and<br />

function considerations that will influence piercing<br />

techniques. Presented in a relaxed multi-media<br />

format, <strong>the</strong> course will provide information on tissue<br />

differences in healing dynamics, inflammation and<br />

its consequences, strategies <strong>to</strong> minimize damage <strong>to</strong><br />

oral structures secondary <strong>to</strong> piercings, and aftercare<br />

recommendations.<br />

Instruc<strong>to</strong>rs: Varied<br />

This new approach <strong>to</strong> core material will give<br />

attendees a hands-on approach <strong>to</strong> studio set up,<br />

cross contamination pr<strong>event</strong>ion, au<strong>to</strong>clave/statim<br />

usage all within a “studio environment.” Cl<strong>as</strong>s sizes<br />

will be limited so that facilita<strong>to</strong>rs will be able <strong>to</strong> give<br />

participants individual attention. Join us for this first<br />

time <strong>of</strong>fering!<br />

Roundtable Discussion: Latex Allergies and<br />

Avoidance in <strong>the</strong> Studio<br />

This roundtable is <strong>to</strong> discuss <strong>the</strong> prevalence <strong>of</strong> latex<br />

allergies and sensitivities in <strong>the</strong> piercing community,<br />

and how <strong>to</strong> avoid reactions with clients, and<br />

developing one yourself. This will cover <strong>to</strong>pics such<br />

<strong>as</strong> “what are latex allergies vs. sensitivities,” “how<br />

<strong>to</strong> screen clients for potential latex issues,” and<br />

“how latex allergies worsen with exposure.”<br />

Aftercare and Wound Healing Dynamics<br />

Instruc<strong>to</strong>rs: Betsy Reynolds & Steve Joyner<br />

This cl<strong>as</strong>s will teach <strong>the</strong> practitioner how <strong>to</strong> tailor<br />

aftercare for individual clients, by understanding <strong>the</strong><br />

impact <strong>of</strong> specific regions and different environments.<br />

The ana<strong>to</strong>my <strong>of</strong> a wound will be discussed, how<br />

it heals, and what products are appropriate/<br />

inappropriate for healing. Full body and oral surgical<br />

preparations and exactly how <strong>the</strong> skin regenerates<br />

itself will be included along with how jewelry affects<br />

wound care.<br />
