Burney Johnson, Deputy Director, Michigan State<br />
Housing Development Authority<br />
As deputy director <strong>of</strong> the Michigan State Housing<br />
Development Authority (MSHDA), Burney Johnson leads a variety <strong>of</strong><br />
initiatives that drive the implementation <strong>of</strong> the agency’s mission to create<br />
and preserve affordable housing in Michigan. Johnson has been<br />
involved in urban planning and public service for more than twenty<br />
years. Before joining MSHDA, she was the deputy director responsible<br />
for planning activities for the City <strong>of</strong> Detroit Planning and Development<br />
Department. She also has held a number <strong>of</strong> planning positions in California.<br />
Johnson is active with a number <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional, community,<br />
and civic groups, including the American Institute <strong>of</strong> Certified Planners.<br />
A native <strong>of</strong> Detroit, Johnson and holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology<br />
from Fisk University and a master’s degree in urban planning from<br />
Wayne State University.<br />
Scott Lowell, Developer and Entrepreneur<br />
Scott Lowell is the president <strong>of</strong> Traffic Jam and Snug <strong>of</strong><br />
Michigan, Inc, a Midtown Detroit landmark restaurant for more than<br />
thirty-five years. He is also president <strong>of</strong> Pied A Terre, Inc., a real estate<br />
investment, holding, and operating company that is entirely focused on<br />
the revival <strong>of</strong> the midtown area in which it operates; and a partner in<br />
the Bronx Bar, LLC as well as Cliff Bells, two landmarks located in the<br />
city <strong>of</strong> Detroit. Lowell holds a B.A. in finance from Wayne State University.<br />
He is the past chairman <strong>of</strong> North Cass Community Union, a local<br />
community organization that is best known for producing Dally in the<br />
Alley, one <strong>of</strong> Detroit’s most well-known street fairs. Lowell also chairs<br />
the Midtown Alliance, a civic group <strong>of</strong> residents and business leaders<br />
involved in local issues <strong>of</strong> importance to residents, and is currently on<br />
the board <strong>of</strong> Midtown Detroit, Inc. He was recently appointed to the<br />
board <strong>of</strong> the Michigan Historic Preservation Network and serves as the<br />
network’s public policy co-chair.<br />
Susan T. Mosey, President, Midtown Detroit, Inc.<br />
Susan T. Mosey has been the president <strong>of</strong> Midtown<br />
Detroit, Inc. (formerly known as the University Cultural Center association)<br />
in Detroit for twenty-four years. This nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organization<br />
is responsible for community development, marketing, public space<br />
maintenance, security services, real estate and small business development,<br />
and arts programming within Detroit’s University Cultural<br />
Center and New Center districts—an area now known as Midtown.<br />
Prior to joining the University Cultural Center Association in 1987,<br />
Mosey was the executive director <strong>of</strong> the Ypsilanti Downtown Development<br />
Authority and a commercial development manager/community<br />
organizer for the Michigan Avenue Community Organization in Detroit.<br />
She is a graduate <strong>of</strong> Wayne State University with a degree in urban<br />
planning.<br />
Laura J. Trudeau, Senior <strong>Program</strong> Director,<br />
The Kresge Foundation<br />
Laura Trudeau leads the Kresge Foundation’s Detroit<br />
<strong>Program</strong> and Community Development Team and is a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Foundation’s Management Team. Prior to joining Kresge in 2001, she<br />
was employed by Bank One and its Detroit predecessor, NBD Bank,
