LIBBY BONNET has weathered the storm & now setting steady course
(by Jenny Smith who spent a happy hour with Libby & her awesome team during Vasco week)
In 2011 - A seismic event shook lives of the Bonnets & the Sailing
fraternity.
Much loved & respected Sail Training Pioneer, Chris Bonnet, (almost 4
score!), passed away on March 2nd 2011 - after a fairly short battle
with cancer. Despite this enormous loss & void, Libby & her Team have
opted to continue with Chris’ legacy inculcating his lifetime of passion,
energy & above all, changing peoples lives through his LOVE for the
sea, - A tall order by any standards.
Sailing was in Chris’s blood & at the age of 10 he & his brother Mike, who
lived on the Bluff near the Shell farm were already the owners of a much
loved dinghy. Loosing their mother at an early age Chris learned the
ropes & fell madly in love with the sport of sailing. Ever the older brother,
Chris proceeded
to hone up his
“EL Capitain”
skills, this
remained his
modus operandi
for his whole
life!!
Libby thought
she was the
Admiral – often
she got away
with this as she
too has her own
dynamic way
– and above
all an excellent
communicator /
administrator…
both were to be
a huge feature of
their success in
the sail training
field, outlasting
many of their
competitors….
Chris had a motto “DARE TO DREAM” - THIS HE CERTAINLY LIVED UP
TO… Sailing remained his raison d’etre & at the age of 43 his dream
started to become a reality. He & Libby had built a Morgan 31 Sailing
boat – “PURSUIT” whilst Libby thought that SHE was the LOVE of his
life…certainly Pursuit was definitely his much favoured mistress!! &
this remained the state until his death 34 years onwards. It must be
remembered that these intrepid love birds met & married in five weeks
!! Their close friends gave them five years, - this in 1976 !!
Undaunted Libby & Chris crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1982 spending
seven months at sea & enjoying the rewards of foreign islands, - as
Chris always said…” I needed this ocean crossing “ to give the school
credibility.
Starting small, hundreds of students were introduced to the sport of
sailing & perhaps to date over 30 000 have passed through Chris’s
careful nurturing hands. A stickler for attention to detail remained his
mantra, - this was absolutely “non negotiable”
Chris was one of a kind & remains an inspiration to all. On board
now we have Shane our Principal, & 4 other extremely able, patient
& professional Instructors – all taught in the past by and with Chris
– thus the Bonnet empathy and integrity of purpose remains & this
remains a huge draw card always.
1993 saw Chris securing the very well known Dealers Mandate for
the world renowned Fountaine Pajot Catamarans – SAIL & POWER –
made in La Rochelle France.. This brought a new vibe to the Bonnets -
again it was their passion, attention to detail & absolute LOVE of these
vessels that put Fountaine Pajot well & truly on the South African map.
Travelling to France with clients gave Chris & Libby a new lease on
life, many miles were covered aboard these fine cats…a highlight being
from La Rochelle to the Seychelles & three other voyages to Gibraltar
& Spain, finally another voyage ending in Portugal.

the short build up the team did well winning 7 out
of 10 races in the IRC class.
The yacht is a Racer / Cruiser with a comfortable
interior & at around 8 tons needs a bit of breeze to
surf, however it goes well to windward & points
remarkably high.

Mistral Nationals
Regatta & Inter Club Challenge 2011, 22/23-29/30 October, 2011 at DAC Vaal dam
This year marks a special anniversary for the Mistral Keelboat
Class. Production of the Mistral 650 as it was then called began
late 1971 and very soon the Class that was formed began making
its intentions known on the SA Sailing scene. Controversies
overcome during its vibrant history created a keen competitive
breed of sailors many of whom have
become sail Masters across the country.
Across the globe. This fighting spirit is
today the hallmark of its tradition both
on and off the water to enjoy serious
fun tempered with real performance.
To celebrate the Class’s 40th
anniversary, a double header is planned
during the Original Cocktails Mistral
Nationals Regatta. This will be an
occasion where many past masters
and visiting teams will launch a
Challenge against the current Class
champs. This will be made possible by
the establishment of a new Inter club
Challenge that will be run within the
Nationals regatta. Each of the 6 Clubs
who have risen to the occasion must
enter at least three boats to qualify.
They will therefore be sailing many
recently restored or active boats to
their limits in the double duel of Club vs club and the overall
trophy. This has boosted the fleet and as a further objective - a
turnout of 40 boats is possible.
As the Mistral fleet has steadily grown over the last three years
at the new home club, DAC, so has the
level of competency and camaraderie
between the spectrum of owners. As an
affordable cruiser racer this little boat
with the big heart, is continuing to
reach new buyers comprising families,
couples, women, students and old pals .

events particularly this year are
welcome to contact the Class for
assistance in finding berths or boats.
With only 10 weeks to go, and a lot still
to be done, please get your show on
the road. 40 years 40 boats. Lets do it!

New SAS Database
The first phase of the new SAS database is finally up and
running with about two months of testing over at last. We are
confident that everything is working correctly but like with any
new software application we donʼt rule out minor glitches in
the beginning. These will be attended to as soon as we
become aware of any issues.
The developers of the database, Quartex Technologies, have
shown their ability to address and sort out problems very
quickly and efficiently in the past few months.
Features that are currently available on this web based
database are:
1. Member login to update personal information including
contact details, sailing class, club etc.
2. Downloading and printing of membership cards by
members.
3. New membership numbers that will be kept for life.
4. Temporary access to the database by regatta organizers/
clubs to verify membership details.
5. Various reporting functions in order to communicate with
members more efficiently by clubs, regions or SAS National
Office.
Features that will be added with phase two of the database
1. The new scoring system for the awarding of National and
Provincial Colours.
2. Recording of results and handicaps for the different
classes sailed by members.
3. Incorporating the other new SAS database for vessels
and skippers in South Africa that is due for release shortly.
It is important to note that as the database is used by more
and more people, the need will arise for further development
and hopefully improvements for the benefit of members and
clubs.
As most clubs donʼt have even the basic information on their
members we would like to appeal to everyone to please help
us by logging into the database and completing their personal
details. A link has been placed on the SAS website under the
membership section.
With keeping an eye on the future use of social media, this
database together with some planned improvements to the
existing website, SAS hopes to improve its ability to
communicate with members in future.
