Notre Dame, South Bend, IN. He taught for a year in the South Bend school system before
entering Saint Bernard Seminary in Rochester, NY to study for the priesthood.
23, 1991 by then Pope John Paul II.
Msgr. Lou served as associate pastor at St. Bernard Parish, Fitchburg, and St. Roch Parish
in Oxford. He was named South County regional coordinator of religious education efforts
in 1974. On September 1, 1979, he was appointed diocesan director of religious education,
which he continued until 2006. He was the Pastor of St. Roch Parish from 2006 until 2011.
Next Sunday Is Sanctity for Life Sunday
“I came that they may have life and have it to the full.”
Jesus calls the first disciples with two simple
words: follow me. So they dropped their
nets, left their old life and followed Him
down the road. Little did they know where the
road would lead or the final destination: the
Cross and how they would be asked to proclaim
that Cross and He who was crucified upon it for
our salvation. It is the same message given
to us. To repent. To turn away from darkness,
selfishness and sin and to cling to Light, Love and
Purity which we come to know in Christ Jesus,
our Lord and Savior.
For there is much darkness, selfishness and sin in
our world. Just 38 years ago today our country
legalized the taking of innocent human life by
abortion. Since that time, over fifty million
children have lost their lives by abortion and that
many or more mothers and families have been
victimized physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Let us work for Justice, defend those whom
everyone else forgets about and with courage of
the first disciples proclaim to the world that the
Kingdom of God is at hand!
Please join us in praying the Rosary for Life after
the 9:00 a.m. Mass Sunday, January 22 in the
Memorial Garden and for the Peaceful Prayer
Vigil at Planned Parenthood on Monday, January
23 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to coincide with
the annual March for Life in Washington, DC.
Check out the Respect Life Table January 21 and
January 23There will be information about all of
the Prolife organizations and how they can assist
pregnant women and their babies and women who
have had an abortion.
Our Lady of Guadalupe,
Intercessor of the Unborn
To help stop the anti-life
push in the U.S. the late
Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
encouraged the spiritual
adoption of an unborn
child. This is done
by praying that one
particular but unknown
child’s life be spared
abortion and be allowed
to continue to live.
To help accomplish this,
it was recommended
that an individual say
the following daily
prayer for a period of
one year.
“Jesus, Mary and
Joseph, I love you very
much. I beg you to spare
the life of the unborn baby
that I have spiritually
adopted who is in danger of abortion.”
During your earthly life this spiritually adopted child of yours
will be known only to God, but in the world to come it is hoped
that you will meet the child whose life was spared by your
prayers and spend eternal happiness with them.
Anne Kathryn Killinger, National Author,
to Speak at AGA Event Thursday, January 19
AGA (Alienated Grandparents Anonymous)
will host Anne Kathryn Killinger, a national
author, as a Special Guest Speaker Thursday,
January 19. She is the author of A Son Is
a Son: How Toxic Daughters-in-Law
Destroy Families.
Anne Kathryn Killinger has been a concert
pianist, a college professor, a church
organist, a photographer’s model, the mother
of two sons and the wife of a prominent
minister and theologian. She has lived in
Nashville, Birmingham, New York, Los
Angeles, Paris, and Oxford. In addition to
her groundbreaking book A Son Is a Son:
How Toxic Daughters-in-Law Destroy
Families, she is the author of An Inner
Journey to Christmas, An Inner Journey
to Easter, and two novels, Pendleton Farm
and Rachel Remembers. She has also
contributed chapters to several collections
of women’s devotional material. She and
January 15, 2012 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
her husband John (a minister) now live in
Warrenton, Virginia, a few miles from the
nation’s capital.
“I applaud the work of AGA,” she
said. “Only other grandparents who
are not allowed to spend time with their
grandchildren have any conception of the
unnatural stress this places on our lives. My
husband and I have four grandchildren we
can’t visit, two of whom we have never once
laid eyes upon. To a mother’s heart, this is
one of the most unbearable psychological
burdens imaginable.”
AGA (Alienated Grandparents
Anonymous) focuses on the struggle so
many grandparents have in being part of
their grandchildren’s lives. Grandparents
who attend will remain anonymous so that
everyone will feel free to openly share their
feelings and perceptions.
As you all know, I am a staunch believer
in the power of prayer. The multitudes
that prayed for our triplets (in and out
of the womb) was overwhelming and
has certainly had a dramatic effect.
We are blessed with three healthy and
happy little ones. Many of you pray
daily for those on the prayer list with
absolutely no idea who these individuals
are. From July through December, many of you prayed
intently for the Grabinskis who are parishioners at St. John
the Evangelist. Matt and his wife (Laura) delivered twins
(Leo and Lola) extremely early and as a result, they spent 98
days in the NICU at The Children’s Hospital of Southwest
Florida. The twins were only two pounds at birth and at one
point weighed less than two pounds before beginning their
miraculous recovery. Matt created a magnificent video of
their journey entitled (98 days in the NICU.) If you would
like to see the video, I have attached a link http://www.
youtube.com/watch?v=PL4-wVZmeY8. You may also access
the video by visiting YouTube and searching for “Leo and
Lola.” Matt and Laura have expressed their sincere gratitude
for your prayers and invite you to see the little miracles that
you prayed for.
On Sunday, February 5, we will host our 14th Annual Super
Bowl Party in the ballroom of the Parish Life Center. This
party has received much acclaim over its 13 year run and
this year will be no different. Tickets will be available in the
parish office for $25 each. We will sell a maximum of 300
tickets and due to the increasing popularity of this annual
event, I strongly suggest buying yours early. This year we
will be using our new audio visual system for the game.
Rather than having one large screen to watch the game,
we will have four large screens providing for an amazing
viewing experience. We hope to see you there. Please see
the flyer in this bulletin for further details.
Save the date…..On January 28 and 29, we will host the
second annual Ministry Fair to be held in the PLC ballroom
from 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and from 7:45 a.m.
– 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. This will
be your opportunity to come down and
meet representatives from all of our
ministries and sign up to join. There
will be giveaways and raffles at the
fair so make sure to attend. We will
serve refreshments during the fair on
both days. Our goal is to create 100%
participation by our parishioners in
ministries at St. John the Evangelist.
With so many choices, we invite you to
join us for this magnificent event.
After partnering with Fleming’s during the months of
October through December, we have partnered with Charlie
Chang’s for the winter months in an effort to generate
additional revenue for the Catholic Faith Appeal. Please see
the flyer in the bulletin. They have an amazing lunch special
as well as great sushi and a fantastic dinner menu. Charlie
Chang’s is located only one mile north of Immokalee Road
on US 41 at the Double Tree Hotel.
Thank you for your extreme generosity during the second
collection this past weekend to benefit the Seminarians of the
Diocese of Venice. The collection totaled over $11,000.00.
As you know, it is very expensive to prepare these young
men for the priesthood. Due to your generosity, we will be
able to continue to turn out amazing priests in the Diocese of
Venice.
Unfortunately, we failed to reach our goal for the 2011
Catholic Faith Appeal. We fell short by $23,000.00 and will
have to recognize the shortfall out of our operating revenue.
Thank you to all who contributed in an effort to reach our
goal. I will take a brief respite and we will begin anew next
month for the 2012 appeal.
Bob Claussen (Stewardship Council President) and I
attended a training seminar this past week in Tampa to
learn more about the new email module we are planning
to launch by the end of the month. I can promise you that
this will greatly increase communication within the parish.
In addition to basic email, we will be able to send you
interactive newsletters with links to important or interesting
content. In order for this campaign to be successful, we
need your email address. Your email will be kept secure and
only used by the parish to convey pertinent information. If
you are willing, please provide the requested information
below and drop in the collection basket or turn in at the
parish office. Thank you in advance for your cooperation to
enhance communication.
John 1:35-42
Life
A
A Divine Invitation (John 1:35-42)
s we journey into Ordinary Time, we focus on the call of the first disciples. In today’s gospel, John the
Baptist points to Jesus as the Lamb of God. This revelation must have been intriguing to his disciples. Jesus
asks these inquisitive men, “What are you looking for?” He knew they were searching for something in life
— he sensed their intrigue and hunger. The disciples of the Baptist ask
Jesus, “Where do you live?” In response Jesus invites them to “Come
and see.” Little did these men know how this invitation would change
their lives. Filled with excitement, the disciples lead Jesus to Simon.
Jesus recognizes Simon’s strength and tells him that he will be called
Peter — the rock! From this moment on Jesus leads the disciples
deeper into the heart of God’s plan.
The other readings in today’s liturgy also speak of the calling given to
people through time. We hear of Samuel’s call in the first reading and
are reminded in Paul’s letter to the Corinthians that we are called to be
members of the body of Christ. God continues to issue the call to all
of us. He calls us to know Him and respond to His call of love. If we
are honest with ourselves, each of us hunger for God in our lives. This
hunger leads us to look beyond the surface and search for meaning.
The important questions to ask ourselves are, “What does God want
from me? Where is God leading me?” The leaders of our Church
constantly remind their people that faith is not an entirely personal
Pope John Paul II
thing. Our Catholic beliefs call for partnership in faith. We exist as a
community and are asked to discern God’s will together and help build the kingdom of God. The mission of
the Church is evangelization. Every member of the Church is challenged to make Jesus known in their own
eality. Our baptism calls us to share in the priestly,
prophetic and kingly nature of Christ.
In concrete, answering Christ’s call means that we
engage ourselves in priestly charity. We are asked
to sacrifice our time and treasure in response to the
needs around us. In order to be prophetic in modern
times, we have to discern God’s will and see where
He is present. Each of us is called to evaluated
certain human experiences and ask what Jesus would do in that
particular circumstance. This is truly reason informed by faith,
that is, using our common sense in trying to achieve what is true
and just. At the same time we have to consult the wisdom of Jesus
and the church. We are reminded that we are the People of God
and that our destiny is the kingdom of God. Our call, therefore,
can be found in a world of hunger — where people suffer every
day for lack of food and shelter. It is found in the midst of conflict
and division. We discover God’s call in our relationships and
within the burning questions of faith.
Reflection Questions
1. Name the times in your life when you have felt God
challenging you to follow him.
2. What vocation has God given to you?
3. How do you experience God?
4. In what situations have you truly encountered Christ?
5. How are you being challenged to live the Christian life
today?
6. What are some of the obstacles you experience when
trying to live God’s will?
7. What New Year’s resolution have you made in terms of
your faith development?
Prayer
We Pray: Lord, may we dare to ask you where You are to be
found in our lives. Give us the courage to answer Your call with
confidence. As we discern your presence, may we find you in
all people and all things. When faced with challenges, help us
to recognize these challenges as opportunities for grace and let
us listen to your language of love and transformation. May we
always hunger for your call and bring the message of the gospel
to the waiting world. Amen.
Reflecting
on the Sunday Readings
with Fr. John J. Ludden, Pastor
Wisdom of the Fathers
“Do you remember how the disciples, hurrying
to the banks of the Jordan to listen to the last of
the great prophets, John the Baptist, saw Jesus of
Nazareth pointed out to them as the Messiah, the
Lamb of God? Out of curiosity they decided to
follow him at a distance. They were shy almost and
embarrassed, until, turning round, He asked them:
“What do you seek?” So began the dialogue that
would give rise to the adventure of John, Andrew,
Simon “Peter” and the other Apostles (cf. Jn 1:29-
51).
In this concrete and surprising encounter, described
in a few, essential words, we find the origin of every
journey in faith. It is Jesus who takes the initiative.
When we have to do with him, the question is
always turned upside down: from questioners, we
become questioned; “searchers”, we discover that
we are “sought”; he, indeed, has always loved
us first (cf. 1 Jn 4:10). This is the fundamental
dimension of the encounter: we are not dealing with
something, but with Someone, with the “Living
One”. Christians are not the disciples of a system of
philosophy: they are men and women who, in faith,
have experienced the encounter with Christ (cf. 1 Jn
1:14).
We are living in an era of great changes: the rapid
decline of ideologies that seemed to promise a long
resistance to the wear and tear of time, the tracing
out on the planet of new confines and frontiers.
Humanity often finds itself uncertain, bewildered
and anxious (cf. Mt 9:36). But the word of God
knows no decline, throughout history and among
changing events, it remains firm and gives light (cf.
Mt 24:35). The faith of the Church is founded on
Jesus Christ the one Saviour of the world, yesterday
and today and forever (cf. Heb 13:8). It gives Christ
as reference for an answer to the questions rising up
from the human heart in face of the mystery of life
and death. Only from Christ, indeed, can there be
answers that do not deceive nor disappoint.”
Is Jesus calling?
Jesus calls each of us to come and see
who he is. At our baptisms Jesus invites
each one of us by name to belong to the
community of his followers. How does
Jesus call us today in our lives? It is not
like hearing God’s voice say, “You have a
collect call from heaven; will you accept
the charges?” We hear Jesus call us in
the Gospels that we hear and study, in
what our parents, friends, and classmates
ask of us. A call from Jesus is an invitation
to be forgiving, caring, and loving the way
he is. How do we hear Jesus calling us
today?
Why are there statues and
images in our churches?
In the early days of the Church, many of
the faithful couldn’t read or write. Images,
icons, and statues in our churches served
as teaching tools and spiritual aids.
Today, images of the Crucifix remind us of
Jesus’ sacrifice and Resurrection. Statues
of Mary and the saints recall their heroism
and remind us of what we can become.
These tools call us to better efforts at
holiness, and urge us to ask God for the
grace to keep trying for saintliness.
Life Question: What positive pressure from your
peers do you feel?
Gospel Question: If you were in Andrew’s place,
what might persuade you to follow Jesus?
GRADES 9-12
Life Question: What is a way a friend has called
you?
Gospel Question: What do the Baptist’s disciples
learn from seeking out Jesus and staying with
him?
