Memorial Day Remembrance Mass
More than 500 parishioners attended the Memorial Day
Remembrance Mass organized by pastoral musician Tom Oram
this past Monday, May 27. Concelebrated by Fr. John Rourke
and Fr. Tom Kelly, the 8:30 a.m. Mass touched on the sacrifices
made by those members of our Armed Forces who died fighting
for our freedom.
The celebration began with prelude music of Here I am Lord
and Have Mercy on Us (A Soldier”s Prayer). Tom Oram’s great
uncle was killed in action over Western Europe in 1943 and this
composition was found among his possessions after his death.
The Marine Corps League of Naples presented and posted
the colors and fired a rifle salute to the fallen. Sgt. Robert
McDonald played taps which brought tears to many in the
congregation. Sgt. McDonald is a WW II veteran and served in
the U.S. Army 8th Air force.
In his homily, Fr. Rourke spoke of his classmates who went
off to war, and “How I remember those gold star flags hanging
in the homes of those who perished in the fight.” “They were
known as the Gold Star Mothers.” Fr. Rourke suggested a visit
to a National Cemetery “will give a lesson in mortality as you
gaze upon the countless white headstones of those warriors
interred there.”
When St. John parishioner Peter Tunucci was asked what he
thought about the Mass, he said, “I would not miss this Mass
for anything” and the U.S. Army veteran added, “The music
and choir were just spectacular and set the tone of why we are
here, to honor those who died for us.”
The mass concluded with Tom’s special rendition of The Battle
Hymn of the Republic.

Sacrament of Baptism
The Diocese requires that parents
seeking baptism for their child attend a
baptism preparation class. To schedule a
baptism class, parents must be registered
practicing members of St. John’s for a
minimum of two months. Classes are
offered once a month and baptisms are
celebrated on the first and third Sundays
of each month after the 1:00 p.m. Mass.
Please call the parish office to register for
a class. Upon completion of the class and
fulfillment of the godparent requirements,
parents may schedule a baptism date.
Sacrament of Matrimony
Those who wish to be married in our
parish must complete the Marriage
Preparation Program. The Diocese
requires a six month notice.

for soldiers, hats for cancer patients, baby hats &
booties & prayer shawls.
Ladies of Charity. Meets the second Friday of
every month, volunteers in Immokalee schools,
the Guadalupe soup kitchen and clothing bank
and visits local nursing homes to assist residents

Prayer Groups
Cenacle of Life Prayer Group
Blessed John Paul II said “a great prayer for
Life is urgently needed!” Cenacle participants
pray for an end to the Culture of Death
every Tuesday evening, 6:00 to 6:45 p.m.,
in the Adoration Chapel. In the powerful
presence of the Blessed Sacrament, we offer
10 mysteries of the rosary and related prayers
and we fast one day a week on our own. All

Centering Prayer /Lectio Divina
Forty-five minutes of peaceful, silent and
beautiful prayer and contemplation. Only
your quiet presence is needed. Mondays: 5:30

The fire hydrant in the Memorial Garden
is no more. As of this past week, the
hydrant has been moved to an area
immediately outside of the garden. This
move has been a long time coming and
is one more step in making our memorial
garden a truly beautiful environment.
We also have replaced the old markers
in sections 13 and 14 and will continue
to replace all of the old markers in the entire garden. We
hope to have this transformation completed by the end of the
calendar year. If you are considering purchasing a space in our
memorial garden, I suggest you do so sooner than later. As I
have said on numerous occasions, there is serious talk within
the Diocese of closing the sale of space in all parish memorial
gardens in the near future. If you purchase your space prior to
the closing, cremains may be interred at any time. If you do
not purchase your space before the closing, you are basically
out of luck. Please contact me at your earliest convenience if
you would like to make our Memorial
Garden your final resting place.

Coordinator? Barbara E. DiCocco
is the Diocesan Coordinator and may
be reached at 941.416.6114 in the
case of an allegation. St. John the
Evangelist takes the safety of our
youth very seriously. We require all
volunteers to be fingerprinted and to
take a mandatory Safe Environment
Training course before having contact
with your children. The Victim
Assistance Coordinator is to listen,
provide support and understanding on
behalf of the Diocese. All allegations
of child sexual abuse by diocesan
personnel, including clergy, should
be reported to law enforcement, the
Florida Department of Children and
Families and to the Victim Assistance
Coordinator. The Coordinator will
notify the Chancellor who will refer the matter to the Review
Board for investigation. The Victim Assistance Coordinator,
as the liaison between the diocese and the alleged victim,
will focus energies on coordinating pastoral care for victims/
survivors and will follow up with victims to ensure that they
will receive appropriate care.
Have you ever considered having your wedding reception or
the reception of your children or grandchildren at St. John
the Evangelist? We have an amazing ballroom which can
host receptions for up to 400 guests. Our ballroom has long
struggled with the stigma of a “parish hall” however, for those
who have attended an event in our facilities; you will agree
that our ballroom is more reminiscent of a higher end hotel
or country club rather than a parish hall. This past weekend,
we hosted a wedding reception for a couple who wanted to
transform the ballroom into a “South Beach” theme. Please
see the pictures of the finished product on page 9. As you
can see, the end result was absolutely magnificent. We host
several hundred special events annually including wedding
receptions, fundraisers, anniversary parties, dinner dances, etc.
If you would like to use our facilities to host your special event,
please contact me at 566.1678. Registered parishioners receive
a substantial discount off of the normal rental rate.
Did you attend the Memorial Day Mass this past Monday? Our
“Lest we Forget” Veteran’s Memorial had a plethora of visitors
not only by those who attended Mass but also by several
hundred who attended the special events next door at Naples
Memorial Garden. I am extremely proud of this amazing
memorial and would like to once again thank Bill and Eileen
Fuller for their generous contribution
of the statue and their vision for the
memorial. Memorial brick pavers
may still be purchased for the
reasonable price of $150.00 each. If
you are interested, please stop by the
parish office and fill out a form to get
yours.

After the proceeds from the Reverse
Raffle have now been accounted for,
we have raised $312,904.01 of our
goal of $454,000.00 with regards
to the 2013 Catholic Faith Appeal.
This leaves us with a balance of only
$141,000.00 to meet our goal. We
are now $64,000.00 ahead of where
we were at this same time last year.
Obviously, with the summer months
ahead of us, contributions will taper,
however we have a great start with six
full months remaining in the annual
appeal. Thank you for your continued
support of the Catholic Faith Appeal.

themed Vacation Bible School to be held on June 10-14? As
of Wednesday of this past week, elementary age registration is
full and there is a waiting list. There is/was still approximately

A
s we celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of
Christ, many of us can recall the Corpus Christi
processions of days gone by. People joined in
procession with the priest who was situated under
a canopy holding the Blessed Sacrament in the
monstrance, blessing the people gathered in prayer.
The processions taught us the great importance and
reality of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
The Church continues its teaching of the Real Presence
by asking the Church all over the world to observe the
Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ.
Reflection Questions
Food for the Journey
1. What does the term ‘Real Presence’ mean to you?
2. Name the ways in which Jesus is revealed to you when you
gather for the mass.
3. What do you hunger and thirst for?
4. What are your hopes?
5. Does the Eucharist offer you strength? Why or why not?
6. Is the Eucharist central to your faith?
7. What does it mean that Christ offered his body and blood for
you?
8. Does risen Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist change the way
that you look at your life and the future?
9. How are you challenged to encounter Christ outside the
Eucharistic celebration?
The Eucharist is central to our faith as Catholic
Christians. The Magisterium notes that it is ‘the
source and summit of our Christian life’. The
theological concept of transubstantiation is notably
important for all of us. While we may well get lost in
the theological treatises and discourse on the Eucharist,
we cannot lose the fact that God is continually
present in a tangible way every time we celebrate the
mass. The last supper, the sacrifice of Calvary and
the resurrection are always relived in the experience
of our Sunday worship. It is so beautiful to know
that no matter what we are going through, no
matter what our disappointments, no matter
what mistakes we make; Christ makes himself
available to us so that our sins will be forgiven.
The Eucharist is our moment of transformation
– it is the moment when God says yes to us,
and we say yes to God.
In Sacred Scripture, we find multiple references
to Jesus sitting at table to eat with others.
Today’s gospel recalls the feeding of the
five thousand. In this account, many of the
people of Bethsaida and the surrounding area
came seeking Jesus, hungering for his’ words
of wisdom. Many others came in need of
healing. Jesus reaches out to them in several
different ways. He cures the sick and calms
the countless souls who are searching for God.
Jesus feeds these people, satisfying them and
making them ready for the journey of faith and
life.

Today’s gospel is a reminder to us that Jesus constantly
meets people on the holy ground of their individual lives.
He embraces their fragility and tries to encourage them in
their weakness and hunger. If we truly open ourselves in
faith, Jesus can embrace our fragility and our brokenness.
We just have to trust that Jesus is there for us. If each one
of us can honestly admit that we have a deep hunger for
God in our lives, it is then that God can fill us with the food
of hope, the bread come down from heaven, the food for our
journey into everlasting life!
During our liturgy, Christ himself is present in you and in those around you, who
have gathered in his name. The presence of Jesus breaks into the world through
the ministry of the Word, and through the breaking of the bread. Let us remind
ourselves of the importance of the Eucharist today and pray that we make it an
important part in our journey through life. Let us also
pray that we will be ready to receive the Real
Presence of Christ under the form of bread
and wine and to seek His presence in
the gift of one another.
