Parent’s Club Meeting Minutes
April 2, 2012 7PM, Student Activity Center
In attendance from Board: Karen Witkowski, Kelly Plianka, Joan
Greenwell, Jennifer Dring, Tara Joncas, Donna Bettencourt-Glavin
Jennifer Dring led the group in a prayer to start the meeting.
Blood Drive at St Philomena School
Sarah from the RI Blood Center spoke about the upcoming Blood
Drive that will be held at the school on May 30, asking for the
Parent’s Club support to promote the Drive and encourage other
parents to donate. After discussion it was suggested starting the
Drive at 2PM might be convenient for those who arrive early at
car line. Also she mentioned that there is a free educational program
focused on teaching young people about donating blood to
eliminate any myths or misconceptions if St Philomena’s decides
they want to offer the program.
Call for Nominations to the Parent’s Club Board
Karen distributed the nomination forms and explained the nomination
process. It is acceptable and welcome to have people
nominate themselves. She asked for volunteers for the committee
to review the nominations and coordinate the process. Kelly Pianka
will be the Committee Chair and Cathleen Whalen and Kim
Mello agreed to participate on the committee. The nomination
forms will be distributed in the next Tuesday letter and the nominations
will be submitted for approval prior to the June Parent’s
Club meeting.
Parent’s Club Donation to the School
In Lana’s absence, Karen announced that the Fundraising efforts
by the Parent’s Club have been so successful so far this year that
the Club is able to make a $75,000 donation to the school.
Textbook Purchasing
Social Studies books are in need of a re-order. Donna explained
that she is exploring whether the school should transition to e-
books rather than incur the expense of purchasing hard cover
books. She is considering a pilot e-reader program, as well as a
survey to determine how many students already have an e-
reader. She may purchase a number of e-readers to make available
(to borrow) to those students who do not have one.
Name Change for Parent’s Club?
Discussion over whether the name of the Club should be changed
to eliminate possible confusion or concern from parents that they
think it is “exclusive” or that they have to “join.” Perhaps that
would increase participation in the Club. It was agreed to keep
name as is but to be more specific when announcing meetings
that “All Are Welcome.” Also agreed that after meetings Donna
will include notes in the Tuesday letter on what was discussed at
the meeting, and once the website is re-vamped it will include a
Parent’s Corner where minutes can be posted.
Golf Tournament
Karen announced that the Golf Tournament is approaching and
the following are needed: foursomes to golf, silent auction items,
tee signs, sponsors. Any help is appreciated. Contact Bill Cardinal.
Principal’s Corner
Donna provided an update on Security. She has reports from the
Portsmouth Police as well as a private security company. All employees
now have badges on lanyards with a whistle. Other options
are still being explored. Additional security training is scheduled
for June at the Teacher’s Professional Day, as well as training
in First Aid and CPR.
Spring Fair
The co-chairs led a lively discussion on the progress of the Spring
Fair planning which is well underway. There was a suggestion to
install an outdoor outlet to use every year rather than having the
electrician run the wire every year. Probably about the same expense,
yet it would be a permanent solution for future years. The
chairs agreed to explore that with the electrician assisting with
the Fair.
Help is needed in the following areas:
Jodi Miller needs a co-chair for the clothing area
Inam Habboush needs a co-chair for the cork board game
Cat Brown is again volunteering for the class baskets. A flyer was
distributed showing the “assignment” for each class.
Jeannine Barry volunteered to chair the clean-up committee and
is looking for parents with pick up trucks and power tools to assist
in the breakdown of the Fair as well as a co-chair.
Still in need of a construction chair.
Traci Earle is running the Yard Sale again this year and asked
about when the trailer would be ready for donations (after First
Communion – so only a week to collect donations)
She also asked who is coordinating the social service agencies that
pick up left over items after the Yard Sale. The chairs will check
into who is doing that and let her know.
There was a suggestion to have 8 th graders participate as part of
their community service hours requirement.
Donna will include in the Tuesday letter areas where additional
help is needed. The chairs are making a list so that when someone
offers to help they will have a specific assignment ready. All
agreed that the fair preparation is going very well.
Meeting adjourned at 8:30PM.
