Dear Friends,
Even though it’s still cold outside, spring and
summer are just around the corner. And that
brings me to talk a little about dogs being left
in cars in the heat of summer.
Last year we received and responded to over
eighty-five calls when the temperatures were
not even fit for people to be outside, let alone
dogs in parked cars with the windows cracked.
A person always thinks they’ll just be a minute
and then…lines are longer than they anticipate
or they run into an old friend or neighbor and
start visiting. Before they know it, ten minutes
has passed.
In ten minutes on a hot day in Kansas, the temperature
in a parked car with the windows
cracked can rise to 160 degrees which is
enough to cause a pet to suffer heat stroke,
brain damage and possibly death. Please—if
you love your pet, leave them home in the heat
of the day. If you want to take them for a
drive, wait till evening when you will be with
them.
If you see a pet in a car on a hot day call us. If
it is deemed a pet in need of care, the pet
owner will be cited.
ADOPT A CAT MONTH is
June will be here soon and to
most animal shelters that
means Adopt-A-Cat month!
There will be much going on
in the cat room, lots of adoptions
we hope and the starting of our remodeling process.
With the help of a Friends volunteer and treasurer of the
Friends of the Animal Shelter group (Melodee), we applied
for a grant with PetsMart Charities for re-vamping the cat
room.
We received enough to purchase four of the cat condos; we
still need three more to meet our needs. These will be tower
units with portholes and larger than the small kennels we
have now. This means when we have multiple cats that come
in together they can stay together until they are adopted. Or
if we aren’t to capacity we can open the portholes and give
them even more room to roam. If you would like to make a
donation to the cat room remodeling project you can send
your donation to the animal shelter in care of: The Cat Room
Project.
Be watching for changes to come…
Memorials
Knowing the different
stages of
grief and how they
will affect you can
be tremendously
helpful in working
towards pet grief recovery. It
can also help you know you are
not alone in your grief and that
pet death grief is natural and to
be expected. You are not “over
reacting”, you are simply reacting
in a natural and expected
way to the loss of a dear friend.
When a pet dies many people
find themselves feeling totally
alone and lost. If they choose
to have their pet cremated or
buried in a pet cemetery they
often find themselves the object
of ridicule by non pet owners
who simply do not understand
that the passing of a pet is as
real and devastating to that person
as the passing of a human
loved one.
Your experience of grief will
depend on the circumstances of
your loss, but it is important to
get the support you need. By
educating ourselves, we may
find it easier to deal with our
loss. You will know what to
expect and feel less inclined as
many people do, to feel as
though you must constantly
apologize for your feelings and
your actions.
DOG
Heartworm
Disease….What is it?
Heartworm is a condition in dogs caused by a certain
type of parasite. These parasites are transmitted
to your pet through mosquitoes. If you are living
in an area where there are lots of mosquitoes
during the night, it is very important that you seriously
consider heartworm prevention measures for
your dog. Heartworm is a very dangerous disease.
It can kill your dog if you don’t do something
about it. Even more disturbing is the fact that this
disease is very prevalent in the US, more particularly
in the West where there are large open fields.
As everybody knows, mosquitoes are common in
rural areas and in the countryside.
The moment heartworm-transmitting mosquitoes
bite your dog, the larvae will be transferred into its
bloodstream. It will incubate there for several
days. That’s the start of the disease. If left ignored,
the parasites will eventually cause your pet
a lot of harm. As such, it will need to be treated
right away.
Once the parasites find their way in the right ventricle,
they will duplicate in number. Too many of
them can cause an extreme hazard to the dog’s vital
organs. As you know failure of the heart may
mean failure of the whole system.
This disease is called Heartworm because the
parasites tend to invade the heart of dogs. The
eggs are deposited into the blood stream and are
transported into the rest of the body until they
reach the heart. The initial symptom of heartworm
is coughing. As the parasites find their way from
the heart and into the lungs, it will cause a group
of symptoms similar to a pulmonary disease like
lung cancer. Hemoptysis and chest pain come
along with it.
In many North American regions April is the time
of the year when veterinarians begin to check dogs
(and cats) for exposure to heartworm organisms
that may have occurred during previous mosquito
season. If your pet was infected last mosquito season,
evidence of the disease may be detectable
then-though it really is dependent of the time in
which your dog was infected. Like any other
pathogenic situation, the earlier a diagnosis is
made and treatment is begun, the better the
chances your pet will recover properly. Give your
veterinarian a call early this spring so that your
dog (or cat) can be tested for heartworm disease.
Current heartworm test are more accurate than
what was available only a few years ago.
It was a long ride but it was
JOE GIBSON
Carolyn Jo Walker
Do you think the time is right?
May I say goodbye to pain filled days and endless lonely nights
I’ve lived my life and done my best, an example tried to be.
So can I take that step beyond, and set my spirit free.
I didn’t want to go at first, I fought with all my might.
But something seems to draw me now to a warm and living light.
I want to go, I really do; it’s difficult to stay.
But I will try as best I can to live just one more day.
To give you time to care for me and share your love and fears.
I know you’re sad and afraid, because I see your tears.
I’ll not be far, I promise that, and hope you’ll always know,
That my spirit will be close to you wherever you may go.
Thank you so for loving me. You know I love you too.
And that’s why it’s hard to say goodbye and end this life with you.
So hold me now just one more time and let me hear you say,
Because you care so much for me, you’ll let me go today.
Why You Should
Adopt
an Aging Dog
Families who have made the decision to bring an older dog into
their home are the first to tell you how much better their lives
are for it, and shelters are filled with senior dogs hoping to enjoy
their puppy retirement with a warm bed (or floor) and good
company. The list of benefits is endless, here are five amazing
reasons to look to the older dog generation when adopting.
WISDOM COMES WITH THE TERRITORY:
With experience come wisdom, and like people, older dogs are
chocked full of it. A senior dog is typically housetrained and
socialized and no longer needs to chew up your household
items just to get attention. This helps you to avoid the stress
and chaos that comes with raising and training a puppy.
A SENIOR DOG KNOWS WHO THEY ARE
An older dog already has an established personality. We can
learn a thing or two from a senior dog who has figured out who
he is and what he wants. You won’t have to guess what they
need because they will be the first to tell you. Nor do you have
to worry about any surprises either, since what you see is what
you get.
THEY TAKE THE TIME TO SMELL THE ROSES
Since dogs are generally much calmer than younger dogs, and
their sense of appreciation is overwhelming. Don’t be surprised
if a senior dog will sit by your side for hours, content
with periodic, hugs and pets. Now that they’ve left the wasted
effort of chasing their tail behind them, they have more time to
enjoy their environment, and more importantly, enjoy your
company.
BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE JUST WON’T
Simply put, the majority of dogs that aren’t adopted and face
the risk of being put to sleep are older dogs. Puppies and
younger dogs are typically adopted first, leaving behind an
amazing group of dogs that face discrimination purely because
of their age. If you won’t adopt a senior dog, no one will.
YOUR HEART WILL THANK YOU
An older dog is so happy and grateful to have a second chance
in life that he will most likely welcome your companionship
with open arms. He gives back to you more than you could
ever imagine.
Whether your dog is young or old, there are no guarantees in
life, so if you are going to rescue a dog, then look beyond their
age and you will certainly find the one that is right for you.
Adopting
The right Cat
For you
Longing to add a small four-legged friend to your household?
Animal shelters have great cats that are there
through no fault of their own. If your looking for a purebred
or a mutt, they have both. Picking a cat through a
shelter may require more effort but the rewards are worth
it.
CAT OR KITTEN
Decide whether you want a cat or a kitten. Kittens are
cute, but have insanely high energy and do destroy things.
If you have small children, they may not mesh well with a
kitten....kittens scratch and little kids crush. Older cats are
calmer and you can tell what their personalities are like.
Often cats are given up because the original owner doesn’t
have time for the cat, lost their home, or had allergies, not
because the cat was a problem.
VISIT THE SHELTER
You may be surprised what you find. Shelter’s don’t always
have the resources to post pictures of all the animals,
so be sure to go in and see who they have available. Bring
everyone that is involved in the decision of what cat to get.
EVALUATE THE CATS
Have interaction with the cat. Have a shelter staff member
take it out of the cage: most shelters have an area for you
to pet the cat. Remember that cats are scared in this new
environment, but petting and talking to the cat should give
you a general idea of it’s personality. If you have children
and the cat isn’t scared of them in the shelter environment,
the cat should also get along with them at home.
MAKE A CHOICE
Once you’ve chosen your new pet, the shelter will have
you fill out paperwork and pay your fee. The fee includes
the cost of spay or neuter and shots.
• Introduce your cat to its litter box as soon as you get
home.
• If you have other pets, introduce them slowly.
• Confine your cat to it’s own area.
• Give the cat time to adjust to your home.
• Buy toys your new cat will play with.
• Ask shelter staff for their recommendations.
