Demographic Differences<br />

in <strong>Cigarette</strong> <strong>Br<strong>and</strong></strong> Use<br />

Prior research has shown that cigarette<br />

br<strong>and</strong> use varies by age, gender,<br />

<strong>and</strong> race. 3,4,5 Among past month<br />

smokers, Marlboro was the br<strong>and</strong><br />

used most often in the past month by<br />

youths aged 12 to 17 (55 percent),<br />

young adults aged 18 to 25 (54 percent),<br />

<strong>and</strong> older adults aged 26 or<br />

older (38 percent) (Figure 2). Older<br />

adults aged 26 or older reported a<br />

greater diversity of br<strong>and</strong> preference<br />

compared with youths <strong>and</strong> young<br />

adults. Among past month smokers,<br />

the 5 br<strong>and</strong>s used most often by<br />

youths <strong>and</strong> young adults accounted<br />

for 91 percent of youth smokers <strong>and</strong><br />

89 percent of young adult smokers,<br />

whereas the 5 br<strong>and</strong>s used most<br />

among smokers aged 26 or older<br />

accounted for only 62 percent of<br />

smokers in this age group.<br />

Among white smokers, Marlboro<br />

was the br<strong>and</strong> used most often in the<br />

past month followed by Camel (Figure<br />

3). Marlboro also was the br<strong>and</strong><br />

used most often by Hispanics, followed<br />

by Newport. Among blacks,<br />

Newport was the br<strong>and</strong> used most<br />

often, followed by Kool.<br />

Among past month smokers aged<br />

12 or older, males (44 percent) <strong>and</strong><br />

females (39 percent) were more likely<br />

to smoke Marlboro than any other<br />

br<strong>and</strong> (data not shown in any figure).<br />

Newport was the second most<br />

used br<strong>and</strong> among males (10 percent)<br />

<strong>and</strong> females (11 percent).<br />

Camel was the third most used<br />

br<strong>and</strong> among males (9 percent),<br />

while Basic was the third most used<br />

br<strong>and</strong> among females (5 percent).<br />

Marlboro was the cigarette br<strong>and</strong><br />

used most often by past month smokers<br />

in the Northeast, Midwest,<br />

South, <strong>and</strong> West (Table 1). Newport<br />

was the second most smoked<br />

br<strong>and</strong> in the Northeast, Midwest,<br />

<strong>and</strong> South, while Camel was the<br />

second most smoked br<strong>and</strong> in the<br />

West. Among white smokers, Marlboro<br />

was used more often than any<br />

other br<strong>and</strong> in all four geographic<br />

regions, Newport was ranked second<br />

in the Northeast, <strong>and</strong> Camel<br />

was ranked second in the West.<br />

Among black smokers, Newport was<br />

used more than any other br<strong>and</strong> in<br />

all four geographic regions <strong>and</strong> Kool<br />

was the second most smoked br<strong>and</strong><br />

in the Midwest <strong>and</strong> South. In the<br />

Northeast, Marlboro was the second<br />

most smoked br<strong>and</strong> while Basic was<br />

ranked second in the West. Among<br />

Hispanic smokers, Marlboro was<br />

used more often than any other<br />

br<strong>and</strong> in the Midwest, South, <strong>and</strong><br />

West. In the Northeast, Marlboro<br />

<strong>and</strong> Newport were used by similar<br />

percentages of Hispanic smokers.<br />
