There is no such entity as ‘<strong>the</strong>’ global economy. Ra<strong>the</strong>r,<br />
<strong>the</strong>re is a vast multiplication <strong>of</strong> global circuits that criss–cross <strong>the</strong><br />
world, some specialised and some not. While many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se global<br />
circuits have long existed, what began to change <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1980s are<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir proliferation and <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly complex organisational and<br />
f<strong>in</strong>ancial fram<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Different circuits conta<strong>in</strong> different groups <strong>of</strong> countries and cities.<br />
The task <strong>the</strong>n becomes to establish on what global/regional circuits a city<br />
is located and what o<strong>the</strong>r cities are parts <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se circuits. This<br />
makes <strong>the</strong> global economy concrete and enables us to do more detailed<br />
research on global cities than <strong>the</strong> usual count<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> headquarters.<br />
If I were to track <strong>the</strong> global circuits <strong>of</strong> gold as a f<strong>in</strong>ancial <strong>in</strong>strument,<br />
it is London, New York, Chicago, and Zurich that dom<strong>in</strong>ate. But if I<br />
track <strong>the</strong> direct trad<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> metal, Johannesburg, Mumbai, Dubai,<br />
and Sydney all appear on <strong>the</strong> map. C<strong>of</strong>fee is mostly produced <strong>in</strong> Brazil,<br />
Kenya, Indonesia, but <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> trad<strong>in</strong>g place for futures on c<strong>of</strong>fee is<br />
Wall Street, even though New York does not grow a s<strong>in</strong>gle bean. The<br />
specialised circuits <strong>in</strong> gold, c<strong>of</strong>fee, oil, and o<strong>the</strong>r commodities, each<br />
<strong>in</strong>volves particular places, which will vary depend<strong>in</strong>g on whe<strong>the</strong>r it is<br />
a production circuit, a trad<strong>in</strong>g circuit, or a f<strong>in</strong>ancial circuit. <strong>An</strong>d <strong>the</strong>n<br />
<strong>the</strong>re are <strong>the</strong> types <strong>of</strong> circuits a firm such as Walmart needs to outsource<br />
<strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> vast amounts <strong>of</strong> products, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g manufactur<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
trad<strong>in</strong>g, and f<strong>in</strong>ancial/<strong>in</strong>surance servic<strong>in</strong>g circuits.<br />
This proliferation <strong>of</strong> specialised circuits, each<br />
conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g particular groups <strong>of</strong> cities, also br<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
out <strong>the</strong> important fact that it is not just a question <strong>of</strong><br />
competition among cities, but <strong>in</strong> good part a division <strong>of</strong><br />
specialised functions with global scope. New York and<br />
London are <strong>the</strong> biggest f<strong>in</strong>ancial centres <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world.<br />
But <strong>the</strong>y do not dom<strong>in</strong>ate all markets. Thus Chicago is<br />
<strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ancial centre for <strong>the</strong> trad<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> futures,<br />
and Frankfurt is <strong>the</strong> lead<strong>in</strong>g trader for, <strong>of</strong> all th<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />
British treasuries. These cities are all f<strong>in</strong>ancial leaders<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> global economy, but <strong>the</strong>y lead <strong>in</strong> different sectors<br />
and <strong>the</strong>y are different types <strong>of</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial centres. Each<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se f<strong>in</strong>ancial centres is particularly specialised<br />
and strong <strong>in</strong> specific segments <strong>of</strong> global f<strong>in</strong>ance, even<br />
as <strong>the</strong>y also engage <strong>in</strong> rout<strong>in</strong>ised types <strong>of</strong> transactions<br />
