improving developmental pathways
One element of Canadian
Sport for Life is the Long Term
Athlete Development (LTAD)
model. LTAD is a training,
competition and recovery
program that is based on an
athlete’s developmental age –
their level of maturation – rather
than their chronological age.
LTAD planning and implementation
continued with financial
support and consulting services
to sports that reviewed and
adjusted all aspects of athlete
development programs and
competitions based on their
national sport LTAD models.
The long-term goal is for all
Saskatchewan PSGBs to have
athlete development models
aligned with their national
LTAD models, which will
translate into developmentally
appropriate sport – from
recreational to high
performance – throughout the
province and country.
An important focus of LTAD
development is on physical
literacy, the foundational
set of abilities necessary for
participation in sport. Sask
Sport partnered with the
Saskatoon Sport Council,
Saskatchewan in motion, the
University of Saskatchewan,
the University of Regina, and
the Saskatchewan Ministry of
Education to initiate a new
Physical Literacy Assessment
Project in the province.
The assessment project will
contribute to an understanding
of physical literacy levels in
Saskatchewan and propose
ways in which the sport system
can help improve these levels
for the province’s children.
Overall, 172 athletes were
registered Canadian Sport
members. CSCS is dedicated
to the development of high
performance athletes in
Saskatchewan, with the goal of
securing podium performances
in national and international
competition.
This year Saskatchewan
athletes demonstrated
excellence in a variety of sports
on the provincial, national and
international stages. At the
2011 Canada Winter Games
earned 23 medals, and at the
2010 Commonwealth Games
Saskatchewan contributed to
Canada’s fourth place showing
with one gold, four silver and
two bronze medals.
Coaches are an integral part
of athletic success, and CSCS
continues its commitment to
the professional development
of coaches in Saskatchewan.
High performance professional
development and networking
sessions are held across the
province throughout the year.
Through the new
Saskatchewan Program
for Athletic Excellence,
supplement financial
support is being provided
to Saskatchewan high
performance athletes carded
through Sport Canada’s
Athlete Assistance Program.
