Introduction
Emerging economies like China, India and the rest of Asia, Brazil and other countries
in South America, Africa, Central and East Europe hold the key to the future growth
of the agricultural and food sector. While these potential growth markets have
unique complexities and challenges they also have significant advantages. In
countries such as India, the advantage arises from factors such as diverse agroclimatic
zones, a large pool of educated people, rapidly growing Generation Y with
greater purchasing power and partially liberalized government policies. However,
the pace of growth will depend upon the nation's ability to create, identify and adopt
innovative strategies to ensure food security while contributing to economic growth.
Enterprise success will depend on the pace of absorption of innovation and the pace
of translation of research results to new products customized for particular markets.
As global enterprises aspire to access emerging markets, the key players within the
emerging markets face the added challenge of retaining them.
This socio-economic and political milieu in tandem with advances in technologies
and a global populace seeking greater choice has accelerated the pace of innovation
with product cycles getting shorter. The need for continuous innovation and strategic
positioning has never been greater.
What are the challenges the leadership will face while exploiting the opportunities?
What are the technological, management, human resources, regulatory and market
strategies that need to be formulated while addressing these opportunities? How can
corporations prepare themselves to excel in these uncertain environments? What
are the policy initiatives the policy planners need to think that would provide
competitive advantage to nations?
Discuss these issues and more in the global convergence of corporate leaders, policy
planners and investors in food and agri sector to attain a 360 degree view of the
competitive elements and the needed solutions.
About the Program
Since 2000, the Food and Agri Business Management Program (AMP) has been
constantly tweaked to facilitate a deeper understanding of the concepts and much
desired on-site experiences for agriculture and food sector entrepreneurs from
emerging economies. AMP 2012, which will be held from 7 - 17 August, 2012 in the
picturesque campus of Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, will provide add-on inputs in
the appropriate environment, and will include deeper interaction with faculty on
need-based specialization, guided visits to enterprises that have excelled in the food
and agricultural sectors and interactions with US policy planners.
