Why we care about the Scarborough Marsh
Scarborough Marsh is a prime example of a New England backbarrier
salt marsh. Maine’s largest tidal marsh, Scarborough Marsh
is approximately 3,100 acres in size and accounts for 15% of the
State’s total salt marsh area.
A tidal marsh consists of low marsh which is flooded twice daily,
high marsh which is flooded only by above-average tides, pannes
which are shallow ponds that form within high marsh, tidal creeks,
open water, and tidal flats. These areas provide critical nurseries
for shellfish, finfish, and invertebrates. The marsh also provides
nesting areas and nourishment for many species of birds. In fact,
Scarborough Marsh has the highest diversity of bird species found
in any of Maine’s 53 smaller salt marshes.
Tidal marshes serve as buffers against the erosive action of
crashing waves from the open sea. They protect low-lying uplands
and shorelines during storms by absorbing and slowly releasing
surges, such as those experienced during this past Patriots’ Day
storm. Salt marshes also help maintain water quality by filtering,
through their complex web of vegetation, polluted runoff before it
reaches the sea.
There are many threats facing tidal marshes such as Scarborough
Marsh. These include development of the upland fringe, filling
of marshland, polluted runoff as from fertilizers used on lawns,
rising sea level, invasive plant species such as the Common Reed
(Phragmites australis), restricting of tidal flow by roads and dams,
and past activities such as ditching for mosquito control.
The Friends of Scarborough Marsh works to conserve and protect
the Scarborough Marsh from these threats and to improve the
ecological, recreational, and commercial values of this natural
treasure.
Thank You!
Dear Friends of Scarborough Marsh,
Welcome! And thank you for joining our 2007 fundraising Dinner & Auction in support
of the Scarborough Marsh.
The Scarborough Marsh is an incredible resource that is often taken for granted.
Measuring over 3,100 acres, it is Maine’s largest salt marsh and a critically valuable
ecosystem for the region. By participating in this fundraiser you are helping protect
and conserve this treasure, and most specifically its critical upland edge, for
generations to come.
The marsh’s upland edge —that portion of land that fringes the tidal marsh— represents
highly valuable wildlife habitat, and most of it is not protected today. The State-owned
wildlife management area is largely limited to those acres that are affected by the flow
of tides. It is crucial to have funds available for immediate action when critical land or
easements, particularly in this upland fringe of the Scarborough Marsh, become available
for protection.
In recent years, we have raised over $140,000 towards this effort. We look forward to
adding the proceeds of tonight’s event to this fund. These fundraising dinners also serve
to build local and regional awareness about the multiple values of the Scarborough
Marsh, including its ecological, economical, recreational, and aesthetic values.
We thank you for participating in tonight’s fundraising effort and invite you to think of
your auction purchases as an investment in the long-term conservation of the
Scarborough Marsh.
We also thank the hundreds of businesses and individuals who have purchased ads,
donated auction items, contributed funds, and have given of their time and talent to make
these events successful. Your commitment to helping protect the Scarborough Marsh is
inspirational and is tremendously appreciated.
In the fall of 2008 we plan to hold our 5th Dinner & Auction. It’s not too early to get started
on the planning, and we always welcome new people to join this effort. If you would like
to help with next year’s event and are interested in attending an organizational meeting,
please call one of us. It’s fun!
With thanks for your support of the Friends of Scarborough Marsh and for habitat
conservation around this amazing ecosystem.
Planned Giving
Brought to you by Jones and Warren Law Firm
Drafting a codicil to your will to provide a gift or bequest to the Friends of the
Scarborough Marsh is easy to do.
All a person has to do is write clearly on paper that he or she would like to
provide a gift, upon death, to Friends of Scarborough Marsh, specify the gift
amount, or method for arriving at the gift amount ( “ percent of my estate,” etc),
have the document witnessed by someone, and notarized by a lawyer or notary
public. The notary requirement ensures people are only making codicils when of
sound mind.
Any lawyer could help you with this estate planning matter. Given the worthiness
of the beneficiary here, most would provide the service free of charge.
This task could be done as part of long-delayed estate and financial planning in
your family, or as a codicil to complex (or simple) estate planning or will drafting
you may have already undertaken.

Acomplishments
Since 2000 Friends of Scarborough Marsh has been at the center of efforts to
protect wildlife habitat, restore marsh habitat closer to its original state, conserve
neighboring land, and educate the public about the ecological and economic
significance of this precious resource. Accomplishments include:
Five salt marsh restoration projects completed. We have been the
force behind partnerships to design, permit, fund, execute and monitor
5 projects involving over 1,000 acres of marsh.
Scarborough Marsh “critical upland edge” land conservation. We have
raised over $100,000 for conservation of land abutting Scarborough
Marsh. One property has been purchased and discussions are ongoing
with landowners regarding gifts, purchases and/or conservation
easements of the 250’ to 500’ of upland known to wildlife biologists
as the “critical edge”. We have more work to do here and the time to
do this work is now.
Invasive species control. Invasive populations of Phragmites Australis
and Purple Loostrife are crowding out native plants on the marsh.
A systematic effort to control these invasions is underway. We have
identified several rare and valuable plant communities including
stands of native Phragmites.
Awareness of Scarborough Marsh and how we impact this resource.
Volunteers have invested countless hours in activities designed to
build understanding, education, awareness and appreciation for this
valuable resource. The actions of residents, landowners, business, and
government can effect marsh health and viability. Many small actions
have large cumulative impacts.
fundraising event. Their generosity is much appreciated!
Salt marshes are one
of the rarest habitat
types in Maine and
make up only 0.4%
of Maine’s entire
wetland acreage.
The Scarborough
Marsh is the largest
contiguous marsh
system in the state of
Maine and is 15% of
the state’s total tidal
marsh area.
Scarborough Marsh
has the highest
diversity of bird
species found in
any of Maine’s 53
salt marshes.
Thank you, Roger Mallar, the Scarborough Land Conservation Trust, USFWS, and Stephanie Cox for providing photographs.
We’re proud to support those who’ve
never stopped believing in a better place.
When we work together toward common goals, anything is possible. Bank of America is
proud to support Friends of the Scarborough Marsh for daring to have dreams, and working
extra hard to make them come true.
The broad base of support for the Scarborough Marsh is wonderful,
and is evidenced by the breadth of collaborators in the recent
Libby River Restoration Project and the related Wildlife Habitat
Development Plan. Partners involved in those projects include the
USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the Maine
Department of Transportation, the Scarborough Sanitary District, the
Portland Water District, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries
and Wildlife, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Gulf of Maine
Program, NOAA, US EPA, Ducks Unlimited, Maine Audubon, and
the Friends of Scarborough Marsh. Wow! Thank you all!
