Invention Convention<br />

<strong>Hagley</strong>’s Invention Convention<br />

Month Held: January 16, 18, <strong>and</strong> 18, 2010<br />

Sponsorship: Several levels available<br />

Description: During <strong>Hagley</strong>’s Invention Convention, held over the Martin<br />

Luther King, Jr., holiday, children in grades K-6 learn problem-solving<br />

skills through interactive, h<strong>and</strong>s-on invention activities. They discover that<br />

inventing something new is possible for everyone. One activity, “Build Your<br />

Own Invention <strong>and</strong> Apply for a <strong>Hagley</strong> Patent,” helps children underst<strong>and</strong><br />

the invention process as a way to solve problems or express creative ideas. In<br />

the “Tinkering Corner,” young children take apart appliances (without getting<br />

into trouble!) to see how they work, helping to demystify technology <strong>and</strong> the<br />

invention process. The Factory System Workshop activity teaches children<br />

how an assembly line simplifies building an invention. And, new for 2010<br />

is a supporting education program, an essay contest, organized by <strong>Hagley</strong><br />

<strong>Museum</strong> for middle-school students focusing on patents. The winners of the<br />

contest will be presented with awards at Invention Convention.<br />

$5,000 Discovery Sponsor – Discovery Sponsors will have their<br />

Description: The Golden Pheasants is <strong>Hagley</strong>’s membership<br />

group for young affluents in the region, under the direction<br />

of committee members Henry B. duPont IV, Brad <strong>and</strong> Pricilla<br />

duPont, Brian <strong>and</strong> Tracy Fuchs, Jeff <strong>and</strong> Robin Kusumi, Dan<br />

<strong>and</strong> Andrea Sarkissian, <strong>and</strong> Mark Talley. The Game Dinner<br />

is limited to 120 guests, who dine in splendor on delicacies<br />

prepared by the Wilmington Club <strong>and</strong> paired with fine wines.<br />

Description: <strong>Hagley</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> invites visitors to celebrate<br />

Valentine’s Day the Victorian way during Victorine’s Valentine<br />

Day the Sunday before Valentine’s Day from 12:30 to 4 p.m.<br />

Appropriately, the museum’s Valentine celebration will be<br />

held on <strong>Hagley</strong>’s Workers’ Hill, where the focus is on people<br />

<strong>and</strong> family history. It was here that Victorine du Pont Bauduy<br />

(1792-1861), the eldest daughter of the DuPont Company<br />

founder, spent time as superintendent of the Br<strong>and</strong>ywine<br />

Manufacturers’ Sunday School.<br />

To round out an afternoon of fun spent in a nineteenthcentury<br />

setting, visitors can make Victorian Valentines<br />

<strong>and</strong> enjoy gingerbread hearts baked in a woodstove.<br />

Approximately 250 visitors participate in the event each year.<br />

<strong>Hagley</strong>’s Creek Kids<br />

Description: <strong>Hagley</strong>’s Creek Kids Youth Leadership Program<br />

is a h<strong>and</strong>s-on history program based on the lives of children of<br />

nineteenth-century powder workers that brings history to life<br />

for our visitors. More than 2,100 visitors attended Creek Kids<br />

in 2008.<br />

Creek Kids offers our visitors h<strong>and</strong>s-on experiences<br />

including quilting, weaving, toy making, butter churning,<br />

fishing, gardening <strong>and</strong> more. Visitors can create make-<strong>and</strong>take<br />

crafts, watch nineteenth-century baseball, write with<br />

quill pens, make ice cream, <strong>and</strong> sail homemade wooden boats<br />

in the millrace.<br />

Creek Kids provides a dynamic training program for youth<br />

volunteers ages 16 to 19. These teenagers learn <strong>and</strong> practice<br />

public speaking <strong>and</strong> leadership skills in addition to developing<br />

the h<strong>and</strong>s-on skills needed to demonstrate sewing, toy<br />

making, cooking, <strong>and</strong> gardening. While they make it look fun<br />

(which it is!), they are also gaining valuable life skills.<br />

Workers’ Heritage Fest<br />

Month Held: March<br />

Sponsorship: $1,500 for both Workers’ Heritage Fest <strong>and</strong><br />

Victorine’s Valentine Day<br />

Description: <strong>Hagley</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> features a St. Patrick’s<br />

Celebration each March on the Sunday before St. Patrick’s Day<br />

from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The day brings some of the sights, sounds,<br />

<strong>and</strong> aromas of Irel<strong>and</strong> to <strong>Hagley</strong>. Activities are included<br />

with the museum’s regular admission. Approximately 350<br />

visitors participate in the event each year. This celebration<br />

of the workers who came from Irel<strong>and</strong> to find jobs in E. I.<br />

du Pont’s powder yards offers visitors of all ages a chance to<br />

enjoy a bit of Irish culture. A singing <strong>and</strong> storytelling duo fills<br />

<strong>Hagley</strong>’s Br<strong>and</strong>ywine Manufacturers’ Sunday School with<br />

the sounds of fiddles, guitars, <strong>and</strong> fine vocals. In addition to<br />

the musical entertainment, an expert presents <strong>information</strong><br />

on Irish genealogy searches; the McAleer School for Irish<br />

Dance showcases children’s step dancing; the New Castle<br />

County Irish Society demonstrates Ceili folk dancing; <strong>and</strong><br />

shamrocks, both live <strong>and</strong> crocheted, sprout from make-<strong>and</strong>take<br />

boutonnieres. “Wee ones” enjoy coloring a leprechaun or<br />

writing with a quill pen in addition to the music <strong>and</strong> dancing.<br />

Visitors can warm themselves with tea <strong>and</strong> scones like those<br />

Mrs. Gibbons, wife of a powder-yard foreman, may have made<br />

for her family in the Gibbons House kitchen. Since St. Patrick’s<br />

Day is the traditional start of the planting season, there will be<br />

an outdoor activity as well: in the workers’ garden, visitors can<br />

help prepare the soil <strong>and</strong> plant peas <strong>and</strong> potatoes.<br />

Description: To celebrate Earth Day, <strong>Hagley</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Library</strong> presents “Power Up at <strong>Hagley</strong>”, a day of educational<br />

<strong>and</strong> entertaining family activities.<br />

This event uses exhibits, demonstrations, <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s-on<br />

activities to explore the many ways in which people have<br />

harnessed forms of energy over time. From watermills to<br />

biofuels, drying racks to photovoltaics, <strong>and</strong> steam power to fuel<br />

cells, visitors can explore how renewable energies have evolved<br />

with state-of-the-art technology to become the most promising<br />

source of future energy.<br />

Description: Fireworks at <strong>Hagley</strong> is one of the premier fireworks shows in the<br />

region. What makes the show unique is the combination of themed narration,<br />

music, aerial displays, set pieces, <strong>and</strong> ground effects. Before the show, from 6 to 8<br />

p.m. on each of the evenings, families can visit Kid Central to enjoy the bouncearound<br />

castles, face painting, music, <strong>and</strong> activities. Attendance for both evenings<br />

averages 7,500. Wilmington Trust is the presenting sponsor for fireworks.<br />

Entertainment Field Package: These sponsorship opportunities are available<br />

at $2,500 each. Located in the fireworks viewing field, <strong>this</strong> entertainment location<br />

includes two six-foot tables, thirty plastic chairs, <strong>and</strong> no tent. Location provides<br />

shade, expansive view of the show, <strong>and</strong> proximity to all activities. Catering <strong>and</strong><br />

Month Held: Wednesdays in July <strong>and</strong> August<br />

($2,000 to also include <strong>Hagley</strong>’s Creek Kids sponsorship)<br />

Description: <strong>Hagley</strong>’s Bike <strong>and</strong> Hike evenings are perfect<br />

for family fun, a romantic picnic <strong>and</strong> stroll, or an invigorating<br />

workout. Bike <strong>and</strong> Hike is held every Wednesday evening in<br />

July <strong>and</strong> August, weather permitting, from 5 to 8 p.m. Cost is<br />

$2 per person.<br />

Visitors have access to the entire three-mile loop from the<br />

Visitor Center to Eleutherian Mills, the du Pont ancestral<br />

home. There are many paths to accommodate everything from<br />

training wheels to ten speeds <strong>and</strong> casual walkers to serious<br />

hikers. Visitors can w<strong>and</strong>er through the old powder yard,<br />

follow the narrow-gauge railroad tracks to the Birkenhead<br />

Mills, stroll under the Iron Bridge <strong>and</strong> past the DuPont<br />

Company’s 150th-anniversary marker. For a more intense<br />

workout, there is the route that climbs uphill past the Soda<br />

House <strong>and</strong> beyond the <strong>Library</strong> building <strong>and</strong> loops around the<br />

E. I. du Pont Restored Garden.<br />

Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic dinner to enjoy at<br />

<strong>Hagley</strong> along the Br<strong>and</strong>ywine River. <strong>Hagley</strong>’s “Easy Does It!”<br />

exhibit will be open for youngsters to explore simple machine<br />

technology. Kids of all ages can figure out how gears, levers,<br />

<strong>and</strong> pulleys help to pedal, lift, work, <strong>and</strong> play in <strong>this</strong> h<strong>and</strong>son<br />

exhibit.<br />

Description: Celebrate fall at <strong>Hagley</strong>’s Golden Pheasants<br />

Harvest Party! Designed for families who love fall activities,<br />

the Harvest Party attracts an affluent group from the region.<br />

The activities begin with bluegrass <strong>and</strong> folk music by the<br />

White Clay Tributary b<strong>and</strong>. A local artist carves large<br />

pumpkins into amazing sculptures. Youngsters have fun<br />

with playing nineteenth-century games with <strong>Hagley</strong>’s Creek<br />

Kids, enjoy a make-<strong>and</strong>-take craft activity, <strong>and</strong> join in a c<strong>and</strong>y<br />

scavenger hunt. Hayrides take families on a colorful trip<br />

through <strong>Hagley</strong>’s property. The picnic dinner features all of<br />

the traditional favorites, including barbecued chicken, hot<br />

dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, potato salad, mixed fruit, <strong>and</strong><br />

dessert. Beer <strong>and</strong> wine are served (only to those twenty-one<br />

Description: <strong>Hagley</strong>’s Car Show is the premier car show in the region.<br />

Thous<strong>and</strong>s of car enthusiasts gather at <strong>Hagley</strong> every September to<br />

marvel at more than 500 cars in the general field <strong>and</strong> 100 vehicles in the<br />

special feature. Unique to the <strong>Hagley</strong> Car Show is its beautiful setting<br />

near Eleutherian Mills, the original home of the du Pont family, <strong>and</strong><br />

the distinctive cars it attracts every year. Visitors come primarily from<br />

Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> New Jersey.<br />

Description: <strong>Hagley</strong>’s Craft Fair brings together local<br />

<strong>and</strong> regional talent for a stunning artisans’ marketplace<br />

stocked with high-quality original arts <strong>and</strong> crafts for relaxed<br />

shopping in a scenic setting. Approximately 2,000 shoppers<br />

attend each year.<br />

A special feature of the fair is the raffle, with prizes donated<br />

by the artisans. Each visitor will receive one free raffle ticket<br />

upon admission to the fair. Additional tickets are earned with<br />

each purchase from an artisan. For a shopping break, the fair<br />

features a dining area where <strong>Hagley</strong>’s Belin House Restaurant<br />

serves upscale bistro fare including s<strong>and</strong>wiches, soups, salads,<br />

<strong>and</strong> homemade dessert items.<br />

Christmas at <strong>Hagley</strong><br />

Christmas at <strong>Hagley</strong><br />

Month Held: Thanksgiving Weekend through December<br />

Sponsorship: $1,500 (Options are available for company<br />

parties, client entertaining, <strong>and</strong> exclusive tours)<br />

Description: During the holidays at <strong>Hagley</strong>, the du Pont<br />

family ancestral home, known as Eleutherian Mills, will be<br />

decorated for the season <strong>and</strong> open for tours. This display will<br />

be open daily from the Friday following Thanksgiving through<br />

the end of December, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Attendance<br />

averages 4,000 visitors for the month-long event.<br />

Visitors will find holiday decorations reflecting the<br />

furnishings <strong>and</strong> style that Louise du Pont Crowninshield<br />

used as she occupied it from 1925 to 1958. Decorations will<br />

evoke the Colonial Revival style. Made popular by Colonial<br />

Williamsburg, <strong>this</strong> style makes use of holly, pine roping<br />

with ribbons, poinsettias, <strong>and</strong> liberal quantities of dried<br />

plant materials mostly grown at <strong>Hagley</strong>, as well as fruit, for<br />

decorations. Four Christmas trees, wreaths, holiday music,<br />

decorative mantelpieces, <strong>and</strong> many other decorations will fill<br />

the home to give it a warm <strong>and</strong> inviting holiday atmosphere.<br />

One returning favorite is the elaborate Twelfth Night display<br />

in the dining room, which uses Mrs. Crowninshield’s plumb<strong>and</strong><br />

French porcelain dessert service (1800-1836).<br />
