One of the absolute best things about working in a magazine office is The Conversation. Chewing over the daily news,
the revelations, the empathetic confessions, the sometimes-random beauty and style tips that spill out of meetings are
a daily tradition. I often leave most meetings armed with a list of dieticians, beauticians, restaurants, ice cream parlors
and more, all of which are “a must try” in Cairo. The monthly cover is always the highlight of our meetings. It consumes
my mind every single month. This month’s cover was inspired by a couple of plates that I recently acquired in the U.K.
Coming back home after a blissful holiday I didn’t want to put them away with the rest of my crockery and just laid
them on my kitchen top for a couple of days. They were too beautiful, too colorful a sight and it was a reminder of a
perfect holiday. Do you ever come back from a holiday with a prized object that sums up your trip?
For June, the Cairo West team took some time away from the desk to think about the pages of the magazine. Putting
together the June issue is a campaign played out on many fronts, with scores of meetings among our team to review
story lineups and contenders. This month we bring to you a Ramadan series listing. We also report on swimming pools,
and how the use of new materials has made it easier to install on, and in many cases, more affordable. And to help you
get the most out of the outdoors, we look into landscaping to see how you can maximize the use of your garden space.
A really big cooking trend this season is everything and anything vegan, we delve into it by looking at recipes, its pros
and cons, and where to buy your fresh produce. We have plenty of thoughts on the topics of looking good and feeling
good this June. Natalia Baryshnikova swung by our office to offer her tips for staying fit, while Flow Wellness Centre
showed us baby yoga moves for our little ones. There is so much more to read this issue.
Oh, and one last thing, I hope you all have a lovely June.
CAIRO WEST MAGAZINE
INTERVIEW
By Shorouk Abbas
The Holy month of Ramadan signifies family time and special iftar and sohour get- togethers with friends and loved ones.
Ramadan TV programming has become an integral part of Ramadan evenings. The month long daily slot gives scriptwriters and
directors the opportunity to develop their characters and plot lines in tantalizing and in-depth ways, and gives actors the chance
to become household names, not only in Egypt but across the region.
This month Cairo West Magazine brings you the scoop on the hottest Ramadan series. We checked in with our favorite stars who
gave us exclusive insight into their new roles this Ramadan. Next month we will be interviewing them on set so look out for Cairo
West Magazine celebrity interviews during the coming months.
“It is a huge production! “ says Youssra of her latest Ramadan endeavor.
“I play the role of the Khedive’s mother, el walda basha, who is a powerful
woman. She controls everything, she almost rules through her son. What I
find fascinating is the historic aspect of this series. The language is mixed
Turkish with Arabic so we do have a translator with us. We also have a
number of stars from other countries in the region. The real challenge was
to replicate the richness of that era, the clothes, the accessories and the
décor. I have to give credit here to Mbc.”
She touched our hearts last Ramadan with her role as Zat. This year Nelly
told Cairo West Magazine that this Ramadan she is starring in two series:
Segn El Nesaa and Saraya Abdeen. The second series Saraya Abdeen is more
of a historic epic, It will be aired
on MBC. “I play the role of one
of the wives of Khedive Ismail. This is mainly a bouquet of leading roles: Youssra,
Ghada Adel, Anoshka, Nour, Salah Abdallah and Qussai Khouli who plays a fantastic
role as Khedive Ismail himself.
About her role in Segn El Nesaa, Nelly Karim says that it is about the whole society and
not just the prison guard. It is also about the state of the prisoners and the human
aspect of their story and the reasons why they ended up being in jail. The role is
exhausting because it is shot mostly in Qanater Prison. The series will be aired on Al
Hayah and Dubai Channel. It’s almost the same crew as that of Zat. “You eventually
find out that the female prison guard is just a normal woman pursuing her career and
she also have problems of her own. This series is about life happening to all of us! “
She played two amazing roles last Ramadan in Neran Sadeeqa and Moga Harra. Cairo West
Magazine spoke to Rania to check out what she has in store for us this year. “This year I am
so excited about the two series: Al Sabaa Wasaya and Al Sandoq Al Aswad. In the first I play
the role of a sister who is the remaining spinster. She takes care of her father until he dies
leaving them his will with seven commandments. Only after they have fulfilled those seven
commandments can they be entitled to their inheritance. From then on a series of surprises
unfold.”
“I am in love with this role” says Hana Shiha of her part in the Ramadan
Series Al Sabaa Wasaya. “I play EmEm, one of seven brothers and sisters.
I am married and work as a street vendor is Ataba selling women’s
lingerie. A horrible incident happens and the 7 brothers and sisters flee
the place where they live. When we learn of our father’s death we come
together again only to find that he left us 7 commandments or orders
to fulfill in order to get our inheritance. Each one of us has one waseya
or mission to accomplish to undo something they had done, which
cause them to flee at the beginning.”
Unlike her role in Moga Harra last year, Shiha takes on a very different
persona, “This time I come from a different class completely. Last
Ramadan I played a character that was dominated by the people in her
life. She could not get the life she wanted. My character this Ramadan
is dominating. I know how to get what I want. I assume different
personalities. It’s so interesting, you’ll see,” says the star coyly.
“As for my role in Al Sandoq Al Aswad, I am Dawlat, the daughter of the driver and
the maid. I was raised by the man for whom my parents work and was considered
his daughter. All of a sudden this man’s wife gives birth and I am not considered
their daughter anymore. The state of shock leads to a series of incidents and
surprises that make this plot irresistible.” Co-stars: Tamer Hagras, Zaki Fateen
Abdel Wahab, Aida Riad, Fedra, Ingy El Moqadem and Khaled Sarhan.
The star sounded so amused with his role in the series Al Sandoq
Al Aswad when we spoke to him. “I play the role of an owner of an
advertising agency. Being a womaniser, and in a lot of debt play a
big role in this drama. There is a lot of action with kidnapping and
fights but at the same time a lot of romance. I meet Rania Youssef,
whom I have known for a long time and realize that I love her. You
will find out what happens to this relationship when you watch Al
Sandoq Al Aswad.”
INTERVIEW
Last time we saw Hend Sabry, she was shooting the series Ana Awza
Atgawez. This time she is starring in the upcoming Ramadan series
Imbratoreyet Meen. She sounded thrilled about the story. “It’s about an
Egyptian family of four living in London who relocates to Egypt three days
after the revolution. From the day they arrive a lot of surprises are in store
for them. It is from a social, not a political perspective.” Mohamed Shahin
plays the role of her husband. Ezzat Abou Ouf and Salwa Khattab play the
role of Sabry’s parents.
“My grandmother is from Alex. I was never particularly drawn to Alexandria until I started
working on Rasayel El Bahr. This story is written by Bilal Fadl whose love for Alexandria
shows in this series,” says Basma of her Ramadan series. “This is the first time for me to
work with Khairy Beshara. He is absolutely amazing! He just fills the whole place with
positive energy. The story is about the stories of the people of Alexandria. There are so
many parallel stories and they often intersect. My role is a mother of an autistic child. This
is the woman Hisham Selim’s character falls in love with. I will not say anymore so you can
watch Ahl Iskendereya in Ramadan”.
“This work was supposed to be aired three years ago!.” Exclaims Hesham
Selim. “I got the script four years ago but it was not meant to happen I guess
till now,” he contends. “The story displays the state in which the people
living in Alexandria were before the revolution. It shows what the problems
of the people were at that time. It is not only a social anatomy but the
political reasons behind them are there too. I play the role of an opinionated
journalist who writes about existing problems and their solutions. You get
to find out how much trouble he gets into with his family, work and the
police.”
Tofahet Adam is the new series for Khaled El Sawy this Ramadan. Khaled
plays multiple characters in this series and changes his looks almost every
episode. Co-stars: Boshra, Riham Abdel Ghafor, Mohamed El shaqanqery and
Phaedra, Director: Ali Edrees. Produced by Gamal El Adl. Khaled promised
Cairo West Magazine a full detailed interview about this series as soon as
he is done shooting.
CAIRO WEST MAGAZINE
INTERVIEW
In Depth with
MRS MANI SURI
Wife of Indian Ambassador to Egypt
By Francesca Sullivan
The residence of the Indian ambassador dates back to 1948, it was one of the first
properties acquired by the Indian government following India’s Independence.
Its elegant panelled drawing rooms that overlook the flowing Nile are tastefully
punctuated by personal artefacts. Some are reminders of India: paintings, wall
hangings and a decorative swing in the entrance hall; bowls of flower petals,
and sculptures by none other than the lady of the house. Then, somewhat
unexpectedly, a boisterous shaggy-haired puppy bounds in, lending the otherwise
formal residence a relaxed aura of family normality. Mrs Mani Suri, dressed for a
lunch appointment in an elegant sari, sends the reluctant dog away before sitting
down to answer questions. The life of an ambassador’s wife does not, it seems,
always follow a typical pattern. Mrs. Suri told Cairo West Magazine what makes
hers just that little bit different.
How long have you been here in
Cairo?
It will be two years this summer. But
this is actually not our first time in
Cairo. Back in 1984 we were here on
our very first posting. My husband
was in the Foreign Service and had
studied at the American University
here as a language student. We were
just married. We stayed three years.
Which other postings have you
enjoyed the most?
Actually I have no favourites. I
enjoy each place for what it offers;
that is part of living this kind of life
successfully. From Cairo we went to
Damascus, then to the USA, Tanzania,
London and South Africa, with
spells in Delhi in between. But Cairo
certainly occupies a special place in
our hearts because we have come
back to it, and have friends here from
before. Of course there have been
many changes since the first time we
were here, just as there have been
in India. More traffic, and a lot of
building over land that was once just
fields. But despite what the Egyptian
people have gone through in recent
years they remain the same: friendly,
warm and hospitable. They love life
and know how to enjoy it.
What is your typical daily
schedule?
Like any other diplomatic spouse I
attend a certain amount of coffee
mornings, lunches and so on. But I
also have another job; since 2007 I’ve
been employed as a graphic designer
by a company in Delhi. When we were
stationed in the US I did a degree in
communication design at the George
Mason University in Virginia. I also
paint and do pottery and sculpture.
I have a studio here in the residence,
and most of my mornings I spend in
there working. Back in Delhi they say
that I have the best of both worlds!
There is a certain amount of
entertaining. It’s always good to
meet people, but although I probably
shouldn’t say this, entertaining just
for the sake of it becomes boring.
Initially when you are in a new place
you invite people and out of that
you make connections and form
new friendships. Evenings I keep for
diplomatic duties, to support my
husband.
What do you miss most about
India?
When you’ve been doing this job
for thirty years you tend not to miss
home; it becomes a lifestyle. Of course
there are some friends and work
colleagues that I miss – and some of
the shopping opportunities in Delhi –
but in general you concentrate on the
positives in each place you are posted
to.
Recently there has been a Festival
of Indian Culture in Cairo. Were
you involved in that?
Very much so, in fact I did all the
design for it, producing the graphics
for the posters and publicity. I also
got involved in the programme itself
– and even went on stage in a musical
production playing a small role as a
mother. I always enjoyed acting on
stage when I was a student.
CAIRO WEST MAGAZINE
INTERVIEW
What is your favourite destination to travel
to in Egypt?
We’ve been lucky enough to travel around the
country a lot, and seen most of the historic
sites – even had some of the closed tombs in
the Valley of the Kings opened especially for
us, and that was amazing. I was fascinated by
the energy inside those places. I also loved
the White Desert and camping out under the
stars. I remember walking outside the tent
in the middle of the night and just being in
awe of the place and looking at the stars. But
perhaps my favourite destination of all is the
Red Sea, the beaches and the sheer beauty of
the marine life. Gorgeous!
What is your favourite kind of music?
That totally depends on my mood. When
I’m working in my studio I tend to listen to
classical Indian music. When I go out at night I
can enjoy many kinds of music, including jazz,
and anything I can dance to.
Your preferred mode of dress?
Comfortable cotton-wear that’s cool in hot
weather. That’s how I am dressed around the
house and in my studio – with Crocs on! I’m
probably too casual on the whole, and I get
accused of that sometimes. On the other hand
I love my saris, and getting dressed in them in
the evenings.
What was the last film you saw at the
cinema?
I am not really a movie person. I remember
when we were here the first time Indian
cinema was popular in Egypt, and recently my
husband has been instrumental in promoting
it here again. So the last film I actually saw at
the movie theatre was Jinna Express, an Indian
movie shown here in Cairo about six months
ago.
The last book you read?
When I do read I like fiction and I am a fan of
the novelist Amitab Ghosh. His books are very
well researched, in historical settings.
Do you have time for hobbies?
My pottery is the thing I love doing when I have
free time. For me it is like a kind of meditation,
my way to connect with myself. I always begin
by just being still with my eyes closed and the
clay in my hands, waiting to see what comes.
Do you have a pet peeve?
One thing that really annoys me is when
people try to be what they are not.
Favourite scent?
I don’t really have one. Anything that smells
nice! I am a simple person, and not at all into
brands.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been
given?
I’ll never forget when I was about eight yearsold,
a person came to our school whose job
was to take care of elderly and homeless
people. He told us, “All of you are receiving
a proper education, but remember that the
best lesson you can learn is to treat a poor
person like a rich one; never change yourself
according to who you are talking to.” Also my
father, who was a warm hearted person, used
to say, “Welcome everyone into your home
with open arms, that way you will always be
given more.”
What is your best habit?
When people work for me I always give them
full liberty to do their job, without interference.
Your worst habit?
I worry too much about small things, and I can
be obsessive, especially about cleanliness and
tidiness.
Favourite App?
I’m fond of WhatsApp and Messenger, but
actually I’m addicted to games – in fact maybe
that is really my worst habit! It can be Candy
Crush, or Sudoku, I get easily hooked.
What can’t you live without?
My husband. We have always complemented
each other in everything we do.
What is the secret of happiness for you?
Being connected to your inner self. Having the
freedom to do things the way you want to. To
live and let live.
HOME AND GARDEN
Making
a Splash
Creating your
Perfect Pool
By Hilary Diack
With a long, hot summer already under way it’s time to look at ways
of keeping cool. Having a pool in your garden used to be a dream
for many, but now the use of new materials has made it easier, and
in many cases, more affordable. So, what are the points to take into
consideration? Cairo West Magazine went to leading pundits in design
and architecture, Mona Hussein of Mona Hussein Design House and
Medhat Abdallah of Magnum Enterprises to get a few top tips.
22 21

Private Residence Landscape, Hacienda, North Coast by Mona Hussein
CWM: What are the latest trends in
pool design?
MA: New pools tend to be more simple
and minimalistic with a ‘Zen’ style
being incorporated even in parts of
the general design of different pools.
The ‘horizon’ pool is generally a sign of
luxury and excellence of design while
the ‘overflow’ gives a special touch to
any pool as it allows continuity of the
hardscape and the pool water as one
unit. Water-relax beds are also added
when the area allows. They become
a part of the pool that is shallow to
sleep in, sit on or even allow space for
a partially submerged chaise longue
in for relaxation. Also, allowing a pool
slot for a jaccuzzi facility is another
plus. In larger sized pools, we can
always walk into the pool through a
beach ramp that allows ease of access
and a feeling of spaciousness, so you
are forced to jump or use the pool
stairs when wanting to take a dip.
MH: During the past years, freeform
swimming pools have been the most
popular, allowing a unique element
to the design. Nowadays geometric
swimming pools have started to
regain popularity. They are simple in
shape and style, I personally prefer
them.
What colour schemes are popular at
present?
MH: The traditional shades of
turquoises, blues, and greenish tones
always have been and probably
always will be the king according to
the majority of our consumers’ tastes.
However, there has been a trend
toward earth tones and shades of grey
and, above all, a burned granite that is
adorned with motifs, whether floral,
geometric or pop art. Whites and
other non-traditional colors for liner
bottoms are also popping up, though
consumers are still a little conservative
to apply them.
What are the advantages of skimmers
vs overflow systems?
MA: Generally, as mentioned, the
overflow is the newer trend and gives,
most of the time, a more modern
look. When you are building a pool
close to the house borders you will
definitely need to use the skimmer in
these sides. You can have a walking
approach (overflow side) when you
are adjacent to a wall, green barrier
or a non-accessible side of the pool.
So generally, skimmers are good for
limited areas having surrounded pools
and overflow is used to make the
water, the greenery and the hardscape
look interconnected as one space.
What lining options are available?
MA: Tiles, mosaic, and ceramics are
used in different sizes and textures,
plus the vinyl lining used in some
types of constructed pools. Another
new trend is to have the pool cladded
with special sheets that allow waterproof
printing to give a 3D look to the
pool sides and bottom.
CAIRO WEST MAGAZINE
HOME AND GARDEN
What options do we have for pool
surrounds?
MA: Hard-scape is the flooring around
the water or leading to it. Other
features can be used to complement
the pool according to its use and style,
in keeping with the total surroundings.
MH: A rustic brick feel or wooden
pavers are the best option for the
pool decks; they allow for maximum
drainage and minimize moisture. To
accentuate natural serenity around
the place, waterfalls and fountains
are always a big hit in the swimming
pool design. You can add LED lights
around the pool decks to add mystery
and illusion; also RGB lighting can be
added to change pool color at night
for great effects.
What types of filtration system are
used?
MA: You need a multi-level filtration
system to clear color and odor and
implement biological filtration using
several levels of filters. Now ozone is
used to give better hygienic control
and quality.
The filtration is around the clock with
timer control to save on chemicals and
cleaning materials as well as electricity
costs.
What is involved in adding heating
for a pool?
MA: You have the options of electric
heating using main electric supply or
solar plate electricity or gas heaters.
We generally use dual source heaters
as standby to each other, but we tend
to mainly use gas due to the lower cost
compared to electricity.
MH: A pool heating system is a big
investment. Whether you opt for gas
heaters, heat pumps, solar heaters,
or an electric heat pump, the best
system for your pool is determined by
your needs and your budget. I always
24 23
recommend solar energy heaters to
save energy and money in the long
run.
What about cleaning and
maintenance?
MH: Keeping the swimming pool
clean can take more work than you
imagine, it is not a trifling matter. Use
the hand skimmer daily to clean out
unwanted items and vacuum it weekly.
Pool filters require periodic cleaning,
depending on the type of the filter and
how often the pool is used; you might
need to consult the manufacturer to
carry out the regular maintenance and
make regular water tests to make sure
it’s clean and healthy.
Is there a big price difference in
constructing different types of pools?
MA: Given the same size you would
expect to pay almost the same unit
rate, but the overflow requires more
space around the swimming area so it’s
a bit higher in cost. Construction using
traditional methods is linked to the
R.C. cost in general plus the internal
and external insulation costs. The big
figure that varies from pool to pool
is the internal finishing cost. It starts
with tiles, then special ceramics used
for pools and finally mosaic, which
can go to the highest limit according
to the type. There are many options
ranging from pottery or glass mosaic
to gold and platinum decorated
mosaic, which would normally be
used for smaller indoor pools for spas.
Another Option
Emak pools provides polypropylene,
a relatively new technology for
swimming pools. They supply these
through their cooperation with Jean
Desjoyaux of France. The benefit of
these pools is that they are almost
unlimited in shape and size, with
assembly being fast and easy as well
as cost effective. Sizes normally range
from 18 m2 up to 120 m2, according
to the client’s requirements. The
production uses a special recycled
polypropylene mixed with carbonate,
which is highly effective against UV
rays, bacteria and pool chemicals.
The pool panels create an ‘active
permanent casing’, using welding
technology, and have a ten-year
guarantee.
If you need to find something really
special Palm Gardens Egypt and Mikati
Investments have a great range of
tiles and paving stones for pools and
surrounds that are worth investigating.
Both Emak and Foxxx have a wide
range of heaters, filters, covers, pool
lights and pumps to suit all types of
pool. Just give their professional sales
teams a call to learn about all available
options. Aquatop has a state -of-theart
collection of Jacuzzi and spa pools.
HOME AND GARDEN
By Francesca Sullivan
If you are fortunate enough to have a garden, this is the time of year you’re likely to be using it the most. But are you
getting the best out of your outdoor space? According to Khaled Shokry of Palm Gardens, one of three garden landscape
artists contributing to this special feature on garden design, the past decade has seen a re-birth in the field, with more and
more Egyptians moving outdoors to enjoy their leisure time. Here’s a taste of what Shokry, Yehia Sherbiny (Genenti), and
Ismail Niazi (Land Designers) have to offer, along with answers to some common questions.
CWM: What services do you offer?
YS: At Genenti we offer a complete soft-scaping service depending on the specific needs of each project and client.
Whether you’re designing your garden or commercial space from scratch, or are looking to renew and add some exotic
plants to your landscape, we offer design consultancy, plant distribution, irrigation and lighting systems, and follow up
with the execution of the work to the highest standards.
IN: We offer full landscape architectural design services covering conceptual design up to construction drawings and
specifications. This can include hard and soft-scaping, decking and paving, water features, lighting and irrigation systems,
as well as horticulture.
KS: We provide a full range of services from full design to turnkey, plus everything in between including architecture,
lighting, implementation, plantation and also ongoing maintenance. We’ve had some of our clients for over ten years,
while others pay for a one-off session with drawings, concepts and ideas, but then can’t necessarily afford to get us to do
the work, so they may contract that later from a cheaper source.
What materials do you most commonly use?
YS: We mostly provide horticultural material, ranging from exotic palms, trees and colourful ground covers, a wide variety
of which are produced and supplied by our two nurseries.
IN: Many different materials. Our designs combine elements such as stone, water, planting and lighting to create mood.
This can vary greatly since the materials of the original building, light levels, views and client tastes all contribute to the
end product. Just as a painting can change considerably based on where you place it. Paint can be attractive to certain
people but not others, this is a matter of personal taste.
26 25

KS: My job as a landscaper is to fulfil the requirements
of clients whilst at the same time respecting the
architecture of the place. For example the outside should
be a continuation of the inside to achieve a harmonious
feeling as you walk through. At the same time I pride
myself on utilizing the latest innovations in materials, for
example I am currently encouraging clients to use highend
porcelain as flooring. There’s been a revolution in
this material with a great choice of finishings, colors and
patterns. It’s stronger than marble and doesn’t stain. In
Egypt we have a high level of salinity and sodium in the
water, which causes discolouration especially in natural
materials – but not on porcelain.
elements, which can be used in particular areas across
the country, it’s not the only factor. Soil composition,
water and nutrient needs also differ depending on each
plant. To understand this properly you have to study
each species’ original habitat and how far it can adjust
to the local environment. Other factors include how the
area itself is being used, for example is it for a public or
residential area, and what are the hard-scape elements;
swimming pools, buildings and so on. Each client and site
has individual requirements.
NI: Saving on water consumption is an increasingly
important issue for environmental preservation but also
for the running cost of a garden. People in similar climates
throughout the world have already adopted drought
tolerant planting to reduce water requirements on a daily
basis. Egypt is slowly moving in this direction but mostly
with large-scale projects such as hotels and shopping
malls.
KS: One new innovation in garden design is the
development of really good-looking artificial grass. It’s
initially expensive and some people may hate the idea,
but to be really eco-friendly and lower water consumption
you should consider using low maintenance materials like
sand and artificial grass – that’s what I’ve done in my own
place.
What new lighting and hydrating technology is
available in Egypt?
YS: A continuous and controlled water source is an
integral part in any soft-scape work. The infrastructure
settings of irrigation systems have not gone through
much development in recent years. However the new
battery and solar energy operated irrigation system
control units now available help combat the continuous
cuts in power supply to residential and commercial units.
Our designs take into consideration the amount of light
distribution and we generally recommend using LED
lighting to reduce electricity consumption.
IN: LED lighting is increasingly changing how people
design the landscape because of the reduction of electrical
consumption and ongoing cost. Irrigation moisture
sensors are contributing to a reduced use of water and
thus preserving this increasingly scarce resource.
KS: More than four years ago I switched to using only
LED lighting in my designs. It reduces electricity bills by
around eighty per cent, allows a much more architectural
feel to the light, with a stronger range and easy control of
angles and colors. Old style lighting units can sometimes
heat up so much they burn the trees or vegetation; LED
is safer. In terms of hydration there hasn’t been much
change over the past two decades. There are innovative
new techniques such as under-lining the garden so it
collects and recycles water, but they are too costly for
most clients.
Which plants do you find most suitable, and which
ones have to be used with care?
IN: Egypt is blessed with abundant sunshine and, in the
past, an abundance of cheap water. In the past many
gardens contained mostly tropical varieties because
clients wanted a lush garden. Environmentally however,
it is more suitable to use more drought tolerant varieties
native to the Mediterranean region, or even go more of
the way of a desert style garden. This does not necessarily
mean that you will have a less lush looking garden though.
KS: Palms remain the best plants to use in sub-tropical
climates. They’re easy to maintain, only require a medium
amount of water, and have a non-aggressive root system.
(The exception to this is the date palm, which has an
extensive root system and will suck up copious amounts
of water if it can). But there are many other varieties to
choose from. Do your own research when buying plants
from nurseries, and don’t necessarily believe what they
tell you. Their main objective is to sell!
What needs to be taken into account when working
with the climate and environment in Egypt?
YS: While climate dictates the range of horticultural
HOME AND GARDEN
What special elements like water features and
rockeries can you include in your designs?
NI: As a design firm we can provide endless possibilities,
and have created most things, including water features,
rock gardens, roof gardens and many other elements.
YS: Our focus is on the horticulture, irrigation systems, potted plants and their maintenance, and how clients can make the
best out of the intended area. But we also provide consultancy services for integrating other elements such as rockeries,
lighting, water features and gazebos.
KS: We do everything, and are well aware that at the high end of the market our clients travel, look in magazines, check
out hotel gardens abroad, and often come back with photographs of things they’ve seen and like. There are new trends,
and Egypt has seen a re-birth of landscaping over the last ten to fifteen years. Now that so many people are moving out to
areas such as Sixth of October, they are increasingly looking to take advantage of this to live in their outdoor spaces – in
the same way as they would in their summer homes on the coast.
What are the common problems people encounter when maintaining their gardens?
IN: You must look ahead to the future and make sure the maintenance company is going to successfully maintain the
irrigation system, has the required knowledge in regard to pruning, fertilizes the garden regularly, and keeps things clean
and orderly. An additional service we provide is to represent our clients when arranging and negotiating maintenance
contracts.
KS: The real problem is that there is no formal education for gardeners in Egypt. In fact we don’t have gardeners at all –
just workers who pose as gardeners! There is also a degree of inflexibility and lack of understanding from property owners
that a garden is always a work in progress. It used to be that workers would prune and cut back the trees each spring as a
matter of course. Nowadays with people living full-time in their villas they object to the look of pruned plants so the trees
end up eating each other; the shade from one affects others that are trying to grow, and so on. Another problem is that
people don’t do their research. They buy a couple of small plants that look attractive without finding out how big they’re
likely to grow, and where not to put them so their roots won’t cause havoc. Buying plants is only the beginning of your
outlay; they will need not just water but food, medicine and on-going maintenance. The truth is, gardening is an art!
Reclaim your Inner Warrior
MMA at Fight and Fitness Factory
By Hilary Diack
It didn’t take long for the news to get around; there is a
new kid on the block. This bears testament to the rapidly
spiralling popularity of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) in Cairo,
and the well-chosen location in Arkan Mall. Already wellestablished
as a sport in cities, towns and villages around
the globe, MMA is also garnering a huge spectator fan
base through both live and televised events. But, apart
from dedicated aficionados, how many of us really know
what MMA is all about? It took a visit to newly-opened
Fight and Fitness Factory in Arkan Mall, and a meeting
with Managing Partner Ezzedin Zahzah and Head Coach
Dan “The Wolfman” Theo to dispel a few misconceptions
and get the big picture.
First impressions? Well, far from being the sweaty,
testosterone-laden den that might be feared, Fight and
Fitness Factory is actually a modern, immaculately clean,
light and airy space, with impressive views over the
surrounding area from its floor-to-ceiling windows. The
only clientele at the time I visited were some chic-buttoned
‘30-something’ ladies, winding up their morning
session. Not to be confused though with the proliferation
of gyms sprouting up around town, this is a very serious
space, using high-end equipment and facilities, where
its commitment to the art is taken to heart. No lounging
recliners, flat-screen TV’s or Nespresso machines in sight.
36 35

CWM: Ezzedin, please tell us how
Fight and Fitness Factory came
about?
EZ: My partners and I saw a need
for a high-level professional MMA
facility to meet the growing demand
in Egypt, with an as yet relatively
untapped fan base. MMA has existed
at a semi-underground level for some
time, but we have set out to elevate
it to its deserved status. We actually
opened on the 4th of April, 2014.
What is MMA and where did it
originate?
DT: MMA is comprised of four
separate disciplines; boxing, Muay
Thai, wrestling and Jiu-jitsu or ground
grappling, all combined at a level
where they seamlessly intertwine,
with the contestant’s physical, mental,
anticipatory and reactive abilities
honed to an optimum state. The
sport was actually a key component
in the Olympics as of 248 BC, and was
known as ‘pancreation’.
Going further back though, murals
showing a great number of wrestling
scenes have been found in tombs
here in Egypt in Bani Hassan. They
date from the time of the Middle
Kingdom, meaning that the sport
was active here and pre-dated the
Olympics by a couple of thousand
years. From that point on MMA then
built up in local forms in communities
around the world, being useful as a
discipline to train soldiers in hand to
hand battle skills.
What makes it different from other
martial arts?
DT: There are multiple techniques,
you need to know what to use, and
when. It is virtually a kinetic chess
match.
Is it a high risk activity?
DT: No more so than any other active
sport, the important thing is to learn
under the guidance of a trainer. There
are different levels for varying stages
of fitness.
What makes MMA so appealing to
its participants?
DT: MMA develops coordination,
mental and physical alertness,
qualities that were an integral part of
our forebears’ personas. By tapping
into this we can reclaim our ‘inner
warrior’. It can be a great form of
stress relief for people with highpressure
lifestyles and demanding
careers, where they cannot readily let
off steam. It is a revival of a lost skill for
many, a reassertion of manhood for
males, and for our ladies, a throwback
to the times when whole armies were
composed of battalions of women
warriors. It can really turn your life
around, I have seen people really pick
themselves up from a low point and
get back on track.
Aren’t there concerns that it
encourages young guys and girls
to become more aggressive, rather
than using social skills to handle
situations?
DT: Not at all, training creates selfdiscipline
and a better ability for
handling life’s situations. It teaches
both respect and self-respect, in
practise you are constantly being
humbled. It actually encourages
camaraderie and helps generate
ability to bond, going back to days
when we were in packs and tribes.
By understanding and having
confidence in their strength and skills
people are much less likely to get into
aggressive/ defensive scenarios.
Does participating in MMA tend
to open people up to supplement
and hormone abuse?
DT: It’s true that some professionals
at the highest levels of competing
do use testosterone. One wonders
why there has been total acceptance
of HRT for women, yet TRT for men
still has a stigma attached to it. When
used judiciously and where there is a
legitimate need, it is beneficial. Apart
from that, I have not personally seen
a lot of supplement abuse.
Because of the demands MMA
makes on the body does Fight and
Fitness Factory have requirements
for medical clearance for
members?
EZ: We have a recommendation clause
that members get medical clearance,
although it is not obligatory. We
do, however, require them to sign a
disclaimer form, as would be the case
in any strenuous sport or activity.
How would you describe Fight
and Fitness Factory’s membership
profile?
EZ: Serious fitness addicts, we are
not here for socializing or pampering.
We take male and female members,
from 5 through 85 and take our
junior members very seriously, with
specially prepared classes for those
The Wolfman on MMA
Dan, can we ask you a few
questions about your life in MMA?
How did you start out?
DT: I was born in the USA, and first
got drawn to martial arts through
watching that iconic children’s film The
Karate Kid. I was only nine years old
and fell into an after-school scuffle. The
defensive moves I had just seen in the
film came instinctively and naturally
to me, and I came out unscathed. That
was the beginning! At university my
friends and I saw a few tapes of UFC
events. I was hooked and took up
training on a serious level.
Where did you train?
I have travelled around the world to
work with some of the top trainers
available: Iowa and California in the
USA, Japan, and Thailand. I have
trained with many of the big names in
the UFC.
What experience did you have in
the actual fight circuit?
I fought only a few times, mainly in the
early stages of my career, first in 1997
in what was then known as NHB (No
Holds Barred) fighting, where literally,
anything goes. I won three MMA
matches by first round submission
holds, and I lost to two famous fighters
that fought for the UFC LHW Title in
Yuki Kondo and Jeremy Horn. I also
fought in two Daidojuku Kudo World
40 39
Championships in Japan, which is
a sort of MMA/Karate/Self-defence
hybrid style. I have trained with many
famous UFC/Bellator Fighters and top
fight teams such as with Dan “The
Beast” Severn, Team Punishment with
Tito Ortiz and “Rampage” Jackson,
“Tank” Abbott, MFS with standouts like
Matt Hughes and Robbie Lawler, and
Black House with Lyoto Machida and
Roger Gracie. I also trained with top
grappling/Jiu-jitsu instructors Saulo
Ribeiro, Eddie Bravo, Gokor Chivichyan
and Judo Gene LeBell. I have two
Black Belts and two Brown Belts in
martial arts, though I have trained in
tons of different styles for 28 years and
adapt techniques from all of them for
MMA. I consider my grappling style
to be Real Catch Wrestling, or Catch-
Jitsu, a mix of Catch Wrestling, Jiujitsu,
Judo, and Sambo, ideal for MMA
or self-defence. My MMA instructional
videos and interviews with fighters
can be found at http://www.youtube.
com/DanTheWolfman1 under the
name TheCombatSystem.com, they
have gotten about 17 million views all
combined.
What spin-offs have you had in
your career?
By chance I got my foot in the door in
the film scene quite early in my career,
in both acting and stunt work. I have
done stunt double work for celebrities
like Sylvester Stallone, and appeared
in the film Couples Retreat as well as
the series like Sons of Anarchy and CSI
New York.
What brought you to Egypt?
My passion is teaching, and passing
my knowledge and experience on.
I wanted to reach out on a truly
international level, and was actually on
my way to Thailand again when I was
attracted by the call for an MMA coach
for Fight and Fitness Factory in Cairo.
I was impressed by their professional
approach and enthusiasm, so I came
over. I really look forward to helping
young kids here reach their dreams.
What is your personal training
schedule?
By teaching five days a week with each
session ranging from three to three
and a half hours I get plenty of exercise.
I start the class with a 10 minute warm
up and stretching. We might do 40
minutes of shadow boxing, footwork
and technique practise, or hitting Thai
pads during punch training. In a few
weeks my pupils will wear shin guards
and progress up to defensive training.
What advice and tips do you have
for young fighters?
They need to be open-minded, to
take the sport seriously, and know
how to learn the different techniques
and work on their weak areas. They
also have to be disciplined and train
hard at least five days a week. They
also should know that the top fighters
tend to be highly intelligent and well
educated, with strong will power and
self-discipline. You need to develop to
be a well-balanced individual.
Greatest Soccer Players Of All Time
By Ahmed Salah
Pele (1956-1977)
the Century’s Greatest Footballer
along with Diego Maradona, Pele has
continued to be an inspiration to the
“the beautiful game.”
Diego Maradona (1976-1997)
Johan Cruyff (1964-1984)
Pele was born in October 1940 as
Edson Arantes do Nascimento to
Dondinho and Dona Celeste Arantes,
his friends started calling him Pele
after his favourite football player
Vasco da Gama ‘Bile’, whom he
mispronounced as ‘Pele’. Pele’s father
was also a soccer player.
Throughout his illustrious career
both on and off the pitch, Pele has
remained a true ambassador of the
game. Making his club debut for
Santos at the age of 15 in 1956, he
remained with the club until 1974.
Although facts and figures could
never do justice to the majesty
that was Pele, his 1,281 goals in all
competitions certainly serve to prove
the point. He helped lead Santos
to nine State Championships, and
claimed two consecutive World Club
Championships in 1962 and 1963.
There is no player who can claim
greater success on the world stage.
Pele made his international debut at
the tender age of 16. A year later and
his teammates pressured the national
coaching staff to include the 17-yearold
in the 1958 World Cup squad. Kept
out of the majority of the tournament
due to injury, Pele came on in Brazil’s
pool match against the Soviet Union.
In the quarterfinals, Pele scored the
winner against Wales, a hat trick in
the semi-finals against France, and
two in the final against Sweden.
Brazil won the 1958 World Cup, and
a star was born. Out with injury for
the 1962 World Cup, Pele returned to
the national squad and claimed one
more World Cup title in 1970. Voted
42 41
Diego Armando Maradona Born in
1960 in a shack so rickety that when
it rained it was wetter inside than
out, raised in one room with seven
siblings, Maradona became the only
man to win a World Cup virtually by
himself. More than that: his skill and
personality dominated a generation
of World Cups.
His first World Cup came in 1982, but
ended in disgrace when he was sent
off for kicking the Brazilian Batista in
the testicles. Mexico in 1986 was to
be his zenith.
His ‘Hand of God’ goal against
England at the 1986 World Cup and
the stunning solo effort that followed
sum up this flawed genius better than
any words. Maradona did not always
play by the rules, and confesses that
his expulsion from the 1994 World Cup
after testing positive for ephedrine is
one of his saddest memories. But the
Maradona that captained Argentina
to the 1986 World Cup and helped
unfashionable Napoli to Serie A titles
in 1987 and 1990 was irrepressible.
Johan Cruyff (also known as Johan
Cruijff), was born in Amsterdam in
1947 a few hundred meters from
the Ajax stadium. He began hanging
around the club as a toddler. His
father, Manus, a grocer, supplied Ajax
with fruit, and after Manus died when
Cruyff was twelve, Cruyff’s mother
cleaned Ajax’s locker rooms.
The skinny waif debuted for the
first team at 17. Ajax was then
a semi-professional club, barely
known outside the Netherlands, but
within a few years Cruyff and Ajax’s
manager Rinus Michels turned it
into the world’s best team. The duo
invented a new kind of soccer, which
foreigners called “Total football.”
Players swapped positions at great
speed, creating an unprecedented
fluidity of play. In the midst of it was
Cruyff, constantly changing position,
pointing and shouting directions at
others even while he dribbled past
opponents.
Ajax won three straight European
Cups from 1971 through 1973, and
each time Cruyff was voted European
Player of the Year. But he was an
opinionated and difficult man, and
quarrels punctuated his career. In
1973, after his teammates voted him
out of Ajax’s captaincy, he fled to
Barcelona. The club swiftly won its
first Spanish title in fourteen years.
Cruyff is best remembered as the
guide of Holland’s great team at the
World Cup of 1974, though sadly the

lost final against West Germany was
his worst match of the tournament.
In 1978, aged only 31, he decided
for family reasons to skip the World
Cup in Argentina. He retired from
soccer that year, but then discovered
that he had lost his money in terrible
investments, and had to return. He
played five more brilliant years for
the Los Angeles Aztecs, Washington
Diplomats, Ajax, and finally Ajax’s
great rival Feyenoord Rotterdam,
before retiring at age 37
Franz Beckenbauer (1964-1984)
to dominate in the early ‘70s, as he
captained West Germany to the
1972 European Championship and
1974 World Cup titles. Beckenbauer,
who is currently president of Bayern
Munich, would go on to succeed at
the managerial level, taking West
Germany to the 1986 World Cup final
match and lifting the trophy with the
squad four years later in Italy. In terms
of innovation and success on the
pitch, “The Kaiser” is clearly in a class
all his own.
Michel Platini (1973-1987)
medal four years later. It’s rumoured
that Michel Platini’s passion for the
game took a turn following the 1985
Heysel disaster in Brussels, where
Juventus claimed the European Cup
on Platini’s penalty kick. Following an
unsuccessful stint as national coach
in 1990, Platini has continued to be a
strong proponent of quality football,
playing a large part in France’s
successful hosting of the 1998 World
Cup finals.
Zinedine Zidane (1992-2006)
Athlete Franz Anton Beckenbauer
was born on September 11, 1945, in
Munich, West Germany. Like many
children growing up in the war-torn
country, he was inspired by West
Germany’s triumph in the 1954 World
Cup. He joined the SC 1906 München
youth team that year, and in 1959 he
began his long relationship with FC
Bayern Munich as a member of the
club’s junior squad.
Franz Beckenbauer revolutionized
the role of attacking sweeper during
his days at Bayern Munich and led
them to the 1967 Cup Winners’ Cup,
as well as three consecutive European
Cups from 1974 to 1976. In his time
at Bayern, the club dominated the
Bundesliga, winning the league
title four times. His incredible form
for club and country earned him
the European Footballer of the Year
award in 1972 and 1976.
The first player in West German
history to reach 100 international
caps, Beckenbauer burst onto the
scene in the 1966 World Cup, scoring
four goals for his side before losing
the final in extra-time to England. Part
of the squad that reached the 1970
World Cup final match, he continued
Michel François Platini was born on
June 21, 1955, in Joeuf, France. His
father, Aldo, was a professional soccer
player who became director of the
AS Nancy club, and young Platini
sought to follow in his footsteps. He
joined the AS Joeuf youth team as an
11-year-old, and landed with Nancy
as a reserve at age 17.
Michel Platini is arguably one of the
best midfielders ever produced by the
European continent. Having scored
98 goals over seven years for Nancy,
Platini moved on to Turin giants
Juventus in 1982, from French side St.
Etienne. He quickly endeared himself
to the Italian fans twice, leading
Juventus to the Italian Championship
and claiming three top-scoring titles.
It was no surprise when he was
named European Footballer of the
Year for three consecutive seasons,
from 1983 to 1985.
France’s golden boy went on to
represent his country a total of 72
times, with a record 41 goals for his
country. Platini played a major role
in the golden age of French football,
claiming a fourth-place finish in the
1982 World Cup and the bronze
“Yazid,” as his Algerian immigrant
family called him, was born in a poor
neighbourhood of Marseilles in 1972.
Zidane learned to play soccer in the
streets of La Castellane, a rough
section of Marseille. After starring for
local youth clubs, 14-year-old Zidane
was discovered at a French Football
Federation training camp by AS
Cannes recruiter Jean Varraud, and
spent the next three years honing his
skills in Cannes’ youth division.
Aged 22, he marked his debut for
France with two goals. Two years later
he joined Juventus, where he won the
Italian league but lost two straight
Champions League finals. By the
time France reached the World Cup
final against Brazil in 1998, “Zizou”
was known as a great but unfulfilled
talent. But on match day, France’s
manager, Aimé Jacquet, noting
that the Brazilians did not mark
tightly on corners, advised him to
“take a stroll towards the front post.”
Zidane headed home two corners,
and France won 3-0. Afterward his
face was projected onto the Arc de
Triomphe, above the words, “Merci
Zizou.” Inevitably he won the 1998
Ballon d’Or for European Footballer of
the Year. When he then led France to
victory at Euro 2000, he secured his
spot as French national icon of his era.
He regularly topped the newspaper
Journal du Dimanche’s periodic vote
for most popular Frenchman.
Zidane almost inspired a flawed
French team to a second World Cup,
but late in the final, after Marco
Materazzi allegedly questioned the
virtue of his female relatives, Zidane
headbutted the Italian and was sent
off.
Cristiano Ronaldo ( 2002 - )
Born Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos
Aveiro on February 5, 1985, in
Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, a small
island off the western coast of the
country, Ronaldo is the youngest of
four children born to Maria Dolores
dos Santos and Jose Dinis Aveiro. He
was named after Ronald Reagan, a
favourite actor of his father’s.
Ronaldo grew up in a largely working
class neighbourhood, his home a
small tin roofed shack that overlooked
the ocean. His early life was shaped
by hardship; his father, a gardener,
often drank too much, and eventually
died from kidney problems in 2005.
Ronaldo’s mother worked as a cook
and cleaner.
By his early teens, Ronaldo’s talent
and legend had grown considerably.
After a stint with Nacional da liha da
Madeira, he signed with Sporting
Portugal in 2001. That same year,
at the tender age of 16, Ronaldo
turned heads with a mesmerizing
performance against Manchester
United, wowing even his opponents
with his footwork and deft skill. He
made such an impression that a
number of United players asked their
manager to try and sign the young
player. It wasn’t long before the club
44 43
paid Ronaldo’s team more than £12
million for his services - a record fee
for a player of his age.
In Manchester, first as a winger and
later as a striker, he racked up the
prizes: three straight league titles
from 2007 through 2009, and the
Champions League in 2008. That
night in Moscow he scored United’s
only goal with a header, but missed
his penalty in the shootout. He won
the 2008 Ballon d’Or for European
Footballer of the year.
In 2009 Real Madrid bought him for
a world record transfer fee of $132
million. In hindsight, Ronaldo might
have done better to stay at United.
The team he joined was a disjointed
outfit with too many stars. Even after
Jose Mourinho became manager,
Madrid could rarely match Barcelona.
Since moving to Spain, Ronaldo has
won just one Spanish Cup. Meanwhile
Portugal has gone into decline.
Often apparently despairing of his
teammates (as his perma-frown
makes all too clear), he has become
more of an individualist, shooting
from all angles, but with brilliant
results: it took him just over two
years to notch 100 goals for Madrid.
A ballet dancer built like a truck, he is
the ultimate mix of power, grace and
style. To move up the rankings, he
needs just a couple more big trophies.
Leonil Messi ( 2003 - )
Lionel Messi was born Luis Lionel
Andres Messi on June 24, 1987,
in Rosario, Argentina. As a young
boy, he tagged along when his two
older brothers played soccer with
their friends. At the age of 8, he was
recruited to join the youth system of
Newell’s Old Boys, a Rosario-based
club. Recognizably smaller than most
of the kids in his age group, Messi was
eventually diagnosed by doctors as
suffering from a hormone deficiency
that restricted his growth.
Messi’s parents, Jorge and Ceclia,
decided on a regimen of nightly
growth-hormone injections for
their son, though it soon proved
impossible to pay several hundred
dollars per month for the medication.
So, at the age of 13, when Messi was
offered the chance to train at soccer
powerhouse FC Barcelona’s youth
academy, La Masia, and have his
medical bills covered by the team,
Messi’s family picked up and moved
across the Atlantic to make a new
home in Spain.
Although he was often homesick in
his new country, Messi moved quickly
through the junior system ranks, and
by the age of 16, he had made his
first appearance for Barcelona. Messi
put himself in the record books on
May 1, 2005, as the youngest player
to ever score a goal for the franchise.
That same year, he led Argentina to
the title in the under-20 World Cup,
scoring on a pair of penalty kicks to
propel the team over Nigeria.
Messi eventually grew to 5 feet and
7 inches, and with his short stature,
speed and relentless attacking style,
he drew comparisons to another
famous Argentinean footballer: Diego
Maradona. Messi steered Barcelona
to a wealth of success, most notably
in 2009, when the left-footer’s team
captured the Champions League, La
Liga, and Spanish Super Cup titles.
That same year, after two consecutive
runner-up finishes, he took home his
first FIFA “World Player of the Year”
honor/Ballon d’Or award.
Even the great Maradona gushed
about his fellow countryman. “I see
him as very similar to me,” the retired
player told the BBC. “He’s a leader
and is offering lessons in beautiful
football. He has something different
to any other player in the world.”
About
‘Pelé’
4Best Instagram
Landscape Photography
accounts to follow
By Lydia Schoonderbeek
We scoured Instagram accounts that really caught our attention and this
is what we got. Some of these are big names, others are small-time, but
they’re all very talented.
This issue we take a look at four Instagrammers whose love of the
outdoors and keen understanding of color and light, make for some
captivating landscape images.
Pele’s real name is Edison Arantes
do Nascimento and he was named
after the American inventor Thomas
Edison.
An interesting fact about Pele is that
he managed to win 3 World Cups with
Brazil and 10 Brazil Championships
with Brazilian team Santos.
Pele scored total of 1,283 goals scored
during his illustrious career, with 77 of
those goals scored for Brazil.
Pele was only 15 years old when he
was signed by Santos. He went on
to score 4 goals in his league debut
for Santos on September 7th, 1956
against FC Corinthians.
Pele was discovered and brought
to Santos by another great Brazilian
player Waldemar de Brito who also
said, “Pele will be greatest football
player in the world”.
He was only 17 when he won his first
World Cup title. He is the youngest
player to have won the World Cup
title.
Pele was appointed as Minister of
Sport in Brazil in 1995, serving until
1998.
The international Olympic Committee
(IOC) voted in 1999 and selected Pele
as athlete of the century.
Pele was knighted by the British in
1997.
@myatilio:
Swedish photographer Sandra Lundin
makes her home in the lakeside town
of Karlsborg. She’s already attracted
more than 25,000 followers with her selfproclaimed
“simple and clean” style.
@alexstrohl:
Pro photographer Alex Strohl is from
Vancouver, British Columbia. And while
that means he can regularly find natural
beauty close to home, his Instagram feed
offers stunning images from his travels
through Europe and South America as
well.
@mikeseehagel:
Calgary is home base for Canadian
Instagrammer Mike Seehagel. After a brief
stint as a studio photographer, Seehagel
now plies his trade as a motion designer
and animator. Clearly photography is still
a major passion, as Seehagel captures
majestic scenes of Calgary’s unspoiled
mountains, lakes and valleys.
@kddkuiper:
San Diego freelance photographer Kyle
eye for color and texture and offers a
number of impressive backlit landscape
compositions.
WELLBEING
Has someone tinkered with the clock?
We are not talking about the hour of
the day that was recently been taken
from us and that we can expect back
in July. We are talking that it is summer
again! Did we not just celebrate new
years just a little while back?
Anyways, it seems that there is no
doubt. It is June and the summer is
upon us. While days may be on the
hot side, we hope that you have a
lot to look forward to. Summer is
the season of the year with the most
time off for most families, the time of
year that involves swimming, being
outdoors, beach, ice cream and many
other great things. The English writer
Henry James put it nicely: “Summer
afternoon—summer afternoon; to
me those have always been the two
most beautiful words in the English
language”
It is important to note though that
summer is also a season that requires
some precautions in order to make
it enjoyable, healthy, and safe. The
Tabibi 24/7 team would like to share
a few important tips with you, to
keep in mind for the summer months.
Some of them we have picked up
during our experience as medical
doctors, some in safety trainings, and
some simply as parents.
How to make it safe for your child
IN THE SUN?
• Put sunscreen on 30 minutes before
going outdoors and reapply every 2
hours
• Limit your sun exposure between
10:00 am and 4:00 pm (max. UV rays)
• Sunscreen can safely be used at any
age, but keep babies younger than 6
months out of direct sunlight
• Use a sunscreen with an SPF
(sun protection factor) of at least
15. The higher the SPF, the more
UVB protection the sunscreen
has. Sunscreen should say “broadspectrum”
on the label (i.e. it screens
out both UVB and UVA rays)
• Use enough sunscreen to cover all
exposed areas, especially the face,
54 53
nose, ears, feet, and hands and even
the backs of the knees
• Sunscreen should be used for sun
protection, not as a reason to stay in
the sun longer
• Set a good example. You can be
the best teacher by practicing
sun protection yourself. Teach all
members of your family how to
protect skin and eyes
How to make it safe for your child
NEXT TO WATER?
• Kids need constant supervision
around water - whether the water
is in a bathtub, a fish pond, a
swimming pool, a spa, the beach, or
a lake
• Children from one to four years
have the highest drowning rates.
Young children can drown in less
than 6 cm of water!
• Don’t rely on air-filled or foam toys,
such as water wings, noodles or inner
tubes, to keep children safe
• During social gatherings, adults
who know how to swim can take
turns being the “designated watcher”
• Teach your kids how to swim as
early as possible. Yet, even a kid who
knows how to swim should not be
left unattended
• If you have a swimming pool at
home, apply four-sided fencing and
clear the pool and deck of toys
• Install an alarm if possible and use a
hard cover to block access when not
in use
• Even you should not swim alone,
especially not in the sea. Even good
swimmers need buddies!
How to make it safe for your child
ON THE ROAD?
• Before leaving on your holiday
remind children about your family
safety procedures for dealing with
strangers, what to do if they get lost
• Always ensure one parent is in
charge of keeping an eye on children
• Provide your children with the
name, address and telephone
number of yourself and a relative or
friend to contact in an emergency
• Placing children in appropriate
car seats and booster seats reduces
serious and fatal injuries by more
than half (75% for children aged two
or less)
• Children should stay in rear facing
seats up to the age of two
• Booster seats are highly
recommended for children until they
are eight years of age or 150 cm tall
• All children ages 12 years and
younger should ride in the back seat
• Children should leave the car from
the sidewalk (curb) side
• Dressing children in bright colors
makes them readily visible. In any
case, always try to remember what
they are wearing
• Remind older children to always
tell you where they are going, with
whom and what time they will be
back
• Ensure that there are no large or
heavy items in the vehicle that may
injure the occupants at any sudden
stops
• Never leave children alone in a
car, temperatures can rise rapidly in
a parked car, especially in tropical
places
• Especially when travelling by
plane, keep your hands free. Use a
backpack!
• Remind children to stay away from
all animals and make them aware of
poisonous insects, snakes etc.
• Keep medicines and poisons away
from small children and watch that
children don’t eat any plants
What MEDICATIONS to take along?
• Fever medication
• Oral rehydration solution
• Anti-allergic cream and medication
• Vomiting medication
• First aid kit
• Always know what medical facilities
are close to you and how you can
reach them

Local Guide to Buying Healthy,
Organic, Gluten-free & More
By Hilary Diack
It’s great to learn about the latest
in health foods (and believe it or
not, most have been around for
centuries), but tracking them down
in Cairo can be quite a task. To make
it easier for you Cairo West Magazine
has compiled a quick guide to finding
those in-demand products:
Quinoa: The grain that is taking the
world by storm, it has been a staple
food in South America for years.
Quinoa is the only plant food that has
all the essential amino acids, trace
elements and vitamins, and also the
ability to adapt to different ecological
environments and climates. Resistant
to drought, poor soils and high
salinity, it can be grown from sea level
to an altitude of four thousand meters
and can withstand temperatures of
between -8 and 38 degrees Celsius.
Recent trials of growing it in Egypt
have shown positive results, so it
may become more readily available
in a short time. In the meantime,
you should be able to get it at the
listed outlets. According to FAO
the year 2013 was declared the
60 59
‘International Year of Quinoa’ in
recognition of the crucial role quinoa
can play in eradicating world hunger,
malnutrition and poverty.
Chia Seeds: Rich in Omega-3 and fibre,
Chia seeds are one of the best known
sources of essential fatty acids with
nearly two-thirds being comprised
of Omega-3 as ALA. They are also an
excellent source of Omega-6 vitamins
minerals antioxidants dietary fibre
and protein. These seeds can be
eaten on their own or added to
salads cereals yogurts etc. to boost
nutritional content.
Flax Seeds: Flax seed, also known as
linseed, is one of the ancient crops
cultivated since Mesopotamian times,
grown for its oil seeds, and fibre. The
chewy seeds are packed with full
of nutrients, Omega-3 fatty acids,
antioxidants, minerals, and essential
vitamins.
Kale: This relative of the cabbage
family is on a lot of shopping lists
these days. No wonder, it is full of
nutrients and great health benefits.
One cup of chopped kale has 134
percent of your recommended daily
intake of vitamin C. Kale is actually
a great source of alpha-linoleic acid
(ALA), the omega-3 fatty acid that’s
essential for brain health, it reduces
Type 2 diabetes risk and boosts heart
health as well. Kale has 133 percent of
a person’s daily vitamin A requirement
- more than any other leafy green,
and also has more calcium than milk.
Kale has plenty of phytonutrients,
things like quercetin - which helps
combat inflammation and prevents
arterial plaque formation - and
sulforaphane, a cancer-fighting
compound. But many of its top
health-promoting compounds are
rendered more effective when you
eat the stuff in combination with
another food. Fats like avocado, olive
oil or even parmesan can make fatsoluble
carotenoids more available
to the body. And acid from lemon
juice helps make kale’s iron more
bioavailable as well.

WELLBEING
Eating Vegan
Making the Most of a Diet Without Animal Products
By Marcus O’Neill
Veganism hasn’t exactly hit the mainstream in Cairo just
yet, however, with vegan restaurants starting to pop up
and supermarkets carrying more vegan-friendly options
every day it’s evident that this dietary trend is on the rise.
What exactly is veganism and is it healthy?
Veganism is a form of vegetarianism whereby all animal
by-products are eliminated from the diet. That means no
meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, yogurt or cheese. Instead,
followers of vegan diets rely exclusively on plant food
sources for nutrition (things like fruits, vegetables, grains,
nuts and legumes).
Eating a vegan diet can be very healthy. According to
the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics people following
vegetarian diets (including those following vegan diets)
tend to have lower cholesterol levels, lower BMIs (body
mass index) and a lower risk for developing high blood
pressure, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. This
is due to the fact that vegan diets are low in saturated
fat and cholesterol and high in dietary fibre, magnesium,
potassium, vitamin C & E, folate, carotenoids, flavonoids
and other phytochemicals.
When planned properly, vegan diets are safe for individuals
during all stages of the lifecycle, including pregnancy,
infancy, childhood and adolescence as well as for athletes
and seniors.
Vegan dietary considerations
As one might imagine when you remove animal products
from your diet, there is the possibility of missing out on
some key nutrients, namely protein, iron, calcium, vitamin
D, zinc, vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids. To prevent
the chance of developing deficiencies for any of these
nutrients it’s a good idea to make sure you’re consuming
the following plant-based foods:
Dark Green Vegetables – Spinach, kale, arugula and even
broccoli are all good plant-based sources of calcium and
iron.
Tofu – This soy-based protein source comes in two forms
(soft and firm) and is also rich in vitamin B12, calcium, zinc
and omega-3 fatty acids.
Non-dairy based milks – For years, soy, rice, and almond
milks have been great options for people who are lactose
intolerant, but vegans can also take advantage of these
beverages due to their high calcium and vitamin B12
contents. Try to choose one that is fortified with vitamin D.
Nuts & seeds – Nuts and seeds are a great source of protein.
Almonds and tahina are good sources of calcium and iron.
Walnuts also happen to be a good way to get your omega
3’s.
Legumes – Lentils, kidney beans, chick peas, black beans
and other legumes should be an integral part of any
vegan’s diet. Not only are they a good source of protein,
but they’re also great options for boosting your iron, zinc
and calcium intake.
The bottom line is that going vegan can be a very healthy
way to eat. Just make sure that you’re making the most
of it by taking the time to plan out your menus to include
most (if not all) of the foods listed above.
Dietary Supplements:
The Good,
The Bad
& The Uncertain
By Marcus O’Neill
People like quick fixes. It’s in our nature as human beings.
Whether your motivation is weight loss, improved fitness,
increased longevity or simply better health, someone out
there has a solution for you that takes WAY less time and
effort than the traditionally held view.
When it comes to nutrition, these “quick fixes” often come
in the form of supplements. Knowing this, it probably won’t
come as a surprise that most supplements are completely
bogus. However, it’s also true that some supplements can
be beneficial - at least in certain situations. So how do you
distinguish the good from the bad?
To simplify the issue, I’ve broken down the following
popular supplements into three categories; The Good, The
Bad and The Uncertain.
The Good
Supplements that have a solid body of research behind
them to indicate their use in certain situations.
Vitamin or mineral supplements – Vitamins and minerals
can make a lot of sense if you’ve been diagnosed with a
deficiency or are at risk for developing a deficiency. A few
such examples are calcium for post-menopausal women,
folic acid during pregnancy or multi-vitamins for children
with low fruit and vegetable intakes.
Probiotics – These “good” bacteria are a great option to
help to relieve gastrointestinal symptoms associated with
irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and also appear to improve
immunity.
Omega-3’s – Most people don’t eat enough fish, and thus
have a difficult time getting the required omega-3 fatty
acids in their diet. In this situation omega-3 supplements,
like fish oil or flax seed oil, can help to reduce your risk of
developing heart disease.
The Bad
Supplements that make wild, “too-good-to-be-true” claims
with essentially zero scientific research to back them up.
Don’t waste your money.
Raspberry Ketones – Despite getting a lot of press in recent
years (and even celebrity endorsements!) there hasn’t been
a single study done in humans that demonstrates raspberry
ketones will help you to lose weight.
Cinnamon (or other natural supplements that claim to
improve your blood sugar) – These can be downright
dangerous, as there is no evidence that they have any
positive impact on your blood sugar levels. People with
diabetes who choose to forego their medications in
favour of these supplements can suffer serious health
complications.
The Uncertain
Supplements that have not yet been proven to be
beneficial in humans. They may have shown promise in
animal studies or in the lab, but in the real world the results
are mixed at best. Also probably not worth your time.
Glutamine – This amino acid is a supplement that has been
around for a while and is claimed to help improve everything
from immunity to protein metabolism to cravings for sugar.
Unfortunately the evidence for such claims is often greatly
exaggerated. For every study showing promise, there are
several others showing it has no meaningful effect.
Carnitine – This supplement has some legitimate medical
uses - in kidney disease for example - however, as a
nutritional supplement it is most often marketed as a “fat
burner” that will help to improve your exercise performance
and perhaps help you to lose weight. Sadly, the evidence
for these claims just doesn’t exist.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) – Despite being marketed
as a powerful weight loss supplement, studies show that
while supplementing with CLA may result in weight loss
in some people, the effect is so small that it’s clinically
irrelevant.
Generally speaking, if you’re a healthy individual who eats
a balanced diet, including plenty of fruits and vegetables,
there’s probably little need for you to be taking supplements.
However, if you do choose to take them, keep in mind that
some supplements can interact with other medications or
even be toxic at high levels, so it’s a good idea to consult
with your healthcare professional before adding them to
your daily regimen.
Warm up for a few minutes to get your heart pumping and muscles primed. Do some marching on the
spot with high knees, jumping jacks, arm circles. Then start on the routine described below. You can
do as many rounds as you want. Between each round do 2-3min of cardio (jumping jacks, jumping
rope, etc)
1 2
Squats - 30 reps
Stand as tall as you can with your feet shoulder width
apart. Hold your arms in front of you at shoulder level.
Lower your body as low as you can by pushing your
hips back and bending your knees. Don’t round your
lower back and keep your torso as upright as possible.
Your thighs should be parallel to the floor at the lowest
point. Then stand up returning to the starting position.
Stationary Lunges - 25 reps for
each leg
Stand up tall with one foot ahead of the other, you
should form quite a long step. Bend both knees at the
same time and lower body down while keeping torso
upright, (lowering down like a helicopter not like a
plane). Stop just before your back knee reaches the
floor. Then stand up into the starting position. Switch
legs and repeat.
66 65

No Gym
No Equipment
No Excuses!
3
One Leg Bridge - 20 reps for
each leg
Lay down on your back, hands by your sides, knees
bent and both feet on the floor. Lift one leg straight
up to the ceiling but keep the other leg bent on the
floor. Raise your hips up to form straight line from the
knees to the shoulders. Keep your pelvic levelled while
raising hips up. Lower hips to the starting position.
4
Side Leg Lifts – 20 reps for
each leg
Lay on your side feeling your body really long. Maintain
pelvic position; lift top leg up at a 45-degree angle and
lower leg with control. Avoid any pelvic movements
and swinging movements of the leg. Repeat with
other leg.
5
Burpees - 20 reps
Stand straight then sit down into the squat position
and place your hands on the floor in front of you. Kick
your feet back into the push-up position and quickly
return back to the squat position. Stand up and jump
as high as you can. Add a clap over your head at the
top, repeat.
6
Push-Ups - 20 reps
Get into push-up position. You should form a straight
line from your ankles to your head. Bend your elbows
to lower your body towards the floor. Push yourself
back up. Modified version: get on your knees. If you
can’t do the push-ups from your knees, then stand-up
and do them against the wall.
7
Dips - 20 reps
Sit up straight on the chair. Legs slightly extended and
feet flat on the floor. Place hands on both sides of the
chair, just outside of your hips. Without moving your
legs, bring gluteus forward off the chair. Bend your
elbows allowing your hips to lower towards the floor.
When elbows form a 90-degree angle, push yourself
back up to the starting position.
8
Reverse Crunch - 20 reps
Lay on your back, arms by your side and lift your legs
up while bending your knees slightly. Contract your
abdominal muscles and lift your hip off the floor
with control. Slowly lower hips while returning to the
starting position.
9
Russian Twist - 20 reps
Sit on the floor with knees bent and heels on the floor.
Lean slightly back without rounding your spine at all.
Place your arms straight out in front of you with your
hands on top of each other. Hands should be levelled
with the bottom of the ribcage. Twist slowly to the left.
Movement comes from ribcage rotating around your
hips, not from the arms swinging. Come back to the
centre and rotate to the other side.
10
Plank Hold for 30 sec
Start on the mat in the push-up position. Than lower
both forearms on the mat and place fists flat on the
floor. Hold in that position.
Tips for a healthy eating lifestyle:
- Drink plenty of water: a minimum of 2 litres per day.
- Have 4-5 meals a day. Don’t miss meals, especially breakfast!.
- Enrich your diet with fruits and vegetables.
- Eat protein every day: (chicken breast, lean veal, fish, eggs, milk).
- Avoid simple (white) carbohydrates like sugar, flour and all products that contain them.
- Avoid carbohydrates at night.
Yoga is a helpful component in a mind-body-soul wellbeing formula. For a healthy Yogi lifestyle, yoga should ideally be
practiced 3 to 5 times a week, 40 to 60 minutes each day. But what if you do not find the time to go to class? Here is your
quick guide to a daily do-at-home yoga routine. For this, we sought the knowledge of naturopath and yoga teacher Dr.
Amit Negi of Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture.
What are three beneficial yoga poses? And what does each one bring when practiced?
Yoga has more than 72000 asana (poses). Here are three that are important for most people. Each asana should be held
for 30-40 seconds.
1. Seated Forward Bend Yoga Pose (Paschimottanasana): This pose is for stretching lower back and also tones the abdominal
and pelvic organs.
70 69

2. Camel Pose (Ustrasana): This posture is great for people with heart and lung problems.
3. Rabbit Pose (Shashankasana): This posture can help people with both high and low blood pressure and can help with
sleep.
During all of these poses the most important thing is to concentrate on breathing.
Can you recommend a half-hour daily routine for us?
This routine can be done morning or evening, it goes like this:
• Inhale and exhale for 5 to 10 minutes. Inhaling should be deep with the chest and belly moving upwards and forwards.
Exhale by drawing them in. Breathing for yoga is in and out through the nose, with the mouth closed.
• Then do the Sun Salutation Routine (Surya Namaskar) for 10 minutes (3-4 times).
• Then you repeat Paschimottanasana pose, Camel pose and Rabbit pose for 15 seconds each pose. This can be
repeated as needed.
• Finish with the Shavasana (Death pose) for 5 to 10 minutes, and redo breathing again for 5 to 10 minutes.
After one month, you should notice an improvement in your body; you can then change asana according to the body’s
requirements. You can also add standing poses such as the Tree pose (Vriksasana), Triangle pose (Trikonasana) and Warrior
pose (Virabhadrasana).
Tucked away in a quiet street of
Heliopolis, Flow is a Mother and Child
Movement and Wellness Center. Flow
was founded by three young moms
who felt the need for creating a space
that would provide the community
with mother-child quality time, in a
comfortable, calming, and intimate
studio in Cairo.
The innumerable benefits of yoga,
an old age tradition, and its holistic
approach connecting mind, body and
soul, enhancing our bodies physically
and emotionally are widely known.
Now this concept can be applied to
a much earlier stage of life, with baby
yogis being as young as 3 months old.
Regular practice of yoga has proven
to help babies as well to improve their
overall strength, flexibility, balance
72 71
and coordination; it alleviates colic
and disturbed sleep patterns. For
mom, it helps relieve stress, improve
breathing and energy control, realign
the spine and correct the posture.
Class begins with circle time, where
moms and babies sit individually on
their mats. The class is divided into a
series of activities, starting from mom
and baby stretching, baby massage,
yoga posing, special hugs and
cuddles, all set to rhymes and nursery
songs; and ending with mom only
relaxation time. Surprisingly enough
babies are introduced to some yoga
poses and tend to observe and later
imitate their moms, doing the same.
At Flow, classes are offered according
to the baby’s age and development.
Baby Yoga 1 (3 to 11 months), where
moms and babies are introduced to
yoga-based exercises and therapeutic
stretches; Baby Yoga 2 (12-18 months)
is comprised of active and playful
moves while moms do some yoga
for themselves; Toddler Yoga (18
months to 4 years old), is a more
stimulating and energetic class,
which follows SMART Yoga (Stretch,
Move and Relax Together). Also on
offer is Infant Massage (as early as 4
weeks), where each class focuses on
a part of the limbs, back and face.
Flow also offers Music and Move class
for babies and toddlers to provide
stimulation, combining songs, story
and exploration of instruments.
By now there are quite a few experts around town
when it comes to keeping things buzzing. We
have already given the update on diesel-fuelled
generators, but what are the greener options?
Cairo West Magazine was relieved to find both
natural gas and solar powered backup units available in the
market, so read on….
Solar Powered Units
With an average of close to 300 hours of sunshine per
month it seems a shame not to utilise this natural source of
energy. Local manufacturers have cottoned on to the fact
that there is a growing market for solar power, for a wide
variety of purposes. We look at the availability of harnessed
solar power to help us cope with blackouts during the long
summer ahead, through the use of photovoltaic batteries,
which come in various sizes. Prices generally start from
around EGP 15 000, ranging upwards to around EGP 60
000, for initial setup. As each setup is configured to the
purchaser’s requirements enquiries need to be directed
to the sales teams and factories, who will then prepare a
quote.
Egreen
Egreen is working to enhance the role of sustainable
development for the country by providing customers with
minimize the use of fossil fuel and carbon emissions. They
can custom-build photovoltaic units to handle different
loads, such as lighting, televisions, computers, electronic
Cost depends on a variety of factors such as changing
current light sources with LED lights, ongoing or emergency
use and the number of hours required from the system.
but the pleasantly shady courtyard
already had quite a few small groups
scattered around on comfortable
seating. Although Ney Lounge is
still in its soft-opening phase, it has
become a poorly-kept secret, judging
by its popularity. Part of its charm
lies in the fact that being an entire
building, it has the space to offer
various spots and nooks and crannies
over several levels. Upon entering
you find yourself in a main restaurant
and lounge, with a quirky library
slightly off to the side. Just had to love
the hanging lamps with well-worn
books suspended from them, adding
to the ambience. There is a special
touch added to the ladies’ bathroom,
but that you need to discover for
yourselves. Further inside there is an
elegant secluded executive lounge,
offering facilities for business and
social meetings needing a level of
privacy.
After strolling through to the terrace
overlooking the spacious courtyard
garden I ordered scrambled eggs
on a lightly toasted round of homebaked
bread, garnished with a
small grilled tomato. The additional
garnish of miniscule cornichons and
pickled onions left me somewhat
bemused, but I suppose breakfast
is a highly personal thing. The eggs
were cooked to perfection, and
were washed down with a tall glass
of freshly squeezed orange juice,
which is all that was needed, but I just
couldn’t pass up those freshly baked
croissants, large, buttery, melt-in-themouth
and generously proportioned.
That called for a cappuccino, and it
was just the right size. Bottomless!
You can hardly go rushing off
after such a great breakfast, so I
took time to wander around and
explore. ‘Lounge’ is actually a bit of
a misnomer, when it has so much
more. The kids’ area is at the rear of
the courtyard, close enough to for
parents to know what mischief they
are getting up to, but far enough not
to disturb anyone lounging around
catching the programs showing on
the many flat-screen TV’s discreetly
positioned throughout. The upper
level may soon house a fine dining
venue, the terrace positioned at the
entrance of the building, Little Ney,
caters to anyone wanting a quick
snack. Also planned is a lower ground
level snack-style food outlet for quick
take-aways and pizza. The menu
items normally offered for lunch and
dinner are mainly European, with
plenty of options, so there is enough
choice to please all palates. Their inhouse
bakery not only supplies their
own bread and pastry selection, but
has a handy patisserie as well with
some rather yummy looking items.
I have already put Ney Lounge on
my hot list for summer. It would lend
itself wonderfully to lazy summer
evenings, and during Ramadan it will
serve both iftar and sohour. And with
so many TV’s I can see it being a great
venue for watching the World Cup
2014 in the best of style.
ART & CULTURE
Guirguis Lotfy’s second solo exhibition at ArtTalks “LOVE AFFAIR” opened on
Tuesday May 20th at 8 El Kamel Mohamed Street. Zamalek and will run until June
17th 2014.
In Love Affair, Lotfy’s stunning canvases proudly immortalize our collective cultural
identity and draw from our most important common denominator - our popular
rituals. Showcasing works from the early 1990s until today, Love Affair is a minivoyage
into Lotfy’s unparalleled knowledge of these rituals, many of which are still
practiced in contemporary Egypt; others long forgotten.
The apparent simplicity and naivety of his paintings narrating every day mundane
scenes of every day mundane people seize the spirit, authenticity and tolerance of Egyptians.
His work turns the ordinary into extraordinary renditions of who we truly are and ‘reveal the light
that comes from people.
Guirguis Lotfy was born in 1955 in Alexandria, where he works and lives. He holds a BFA from
Alexandria’s faculty of fine arts and an MFA and a PhD from the Helwan Faculty of Fine Arts in
Cairo. Both theses were supervised by two of Egypt’s most important pioneer artists - Hamed
Nada and Hamed Owais, whom he befriended until their deaths.
