Partnering for Success
Through a partnership of business, government
and community leaders, MercyFirst is helping
children to help themselves, giving them the
skills and encouragement they need to develop
into productive adults. In this way, MercyFirst
is working to keep hope alive for our next
generation.
A Future Worth Saving
Unfortunately, statistics indicate that foster
children have the odds stacked against them.
Only 50% will graduate from high school, a
handful will go on to pursue post-secondary
education, and even fewer will ever finish
college or vocational school. Considering today’s
competitive work place, these dismal numbers
put them at a significant disadvantage. That’s
why MercyFirst founded it’s Scholarship Program,
to help these young men and women get in
school and stay in school. To help them realize
their dreams of a successful future.
A Dream Realized
Each semester, a scholarship request application
is filled out by a student deemed eligible for the
program by the MercyFirst staff. The application
gathers information on the applicant’s
background, career goals, academic history
and plans for post high school education. The
Scholarship Committee of the agency’s Board
of Directors reviews the applications, interviews
each candidate and makes recommendations for
awards.

MercyFirst is one of New York’s leading not-forprofit
human service agency founded by the Sisters
of Mercy in 1894. MercyFirst provides an integrated
continuum of care for over 4,000 traumatized and
neglected children, teenagers and their families
at sites throughout Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and
Suffolk counties. MercyFirst’s range of programs and
services include Family Support and After-School Programs,
Foster Homes and Adoption Services, Community
Group Homes, Campus-based Residential
Treatment and Medical and Mental Health Services,
as well as the innovative Bridges to the Future, which
offers training and hands-on work experience that
helps our teen and young adult clients learn to be
self-sufficient.

Scholarship Fund Founded

Daniel J. McCarthy, Jr. thought he was the luckiest man in
the world, and he lived his life trying to share his gifts with
people who faced barriers to their success and happiness.
He was well known in actuarial circles, not only for his own
extraordinary abilities, but for his willingness to reach out
and teach others. When he died suddenly on 9/26/08, his
friends, colleagues, and family honored that spirit with
an outpouring of generosity, and established the Daniel J.
McCarthy, Jr. Scholarship Fund at MercyFirst.
These scholarships will help youth attend college or
vocational school and are the first endowed scholarships set
up as part of our Scholarship Fund, which provides young
men and women with the extra financial support they need
to succeed in advancing their education and opportunities.
Dan was extremely active in advancing education within his
profession. He began his career at Equitable Life, then joined
Milliman, which is among the world’s largest independent
actuarial and consulting firms. He served as Chairman of
the firm for seven years, was President of the American
Academy of Actuaries, spent six years as a member of the
Actuarial Standards Board, was on the board of the Society
of Actuaries, and served as the first International Secretary
of the American Academy of Actuaries.
Dan’s commitment to education was a fundamental part of
his family life. He met Virginia, his wife of 49 years, when
they were students at Fordham University, and all six of their
children graduated from Catholic Universities. Most of them
also went on to earn Graduate degrees. Dan and Virginia
have sixteen grandchildren, four of whom have already
begun to pursue their higher education.
To further honor Daniel McCarthy for his commitment to
helping those less fortunate, the Board of Directors has
decided to name our annual scholarship dinner the Daniel
J. McCarthy, Jr. Scholarship Dinner. Every year five young
people will be awarded a scholarship at the dinner in his
name. Dan’s spirit and love of family and friends lives on
through those young men and women who will be better
equipped to survive in a competitive world.

Includes a table of 10 with preferential
seating and Magna Cum Laude Recognition.
Establishes an endowed annual scholarship
for one student in the donor’s name in
perpetuity.
___ Honoree Tribute Scholarship - $10,000
Includes 10 individual tickets and Magna
Cum Laude Recognition. Provides a four year
scholarship to one student; Scholarship can
be named in memory of, or in honor of or
tribute to a loved one.
___ Annual Scholarship - $2,500
Includes 2 individual tickets and Cum Laude
Recognition. Provides a one year scholarship
for one student; Scholarship can be named
in memory of, or in honor of or tribute to a
loved one.
___ Magna Cum Laude - $500
Magna Cum Laude Scroll of Honor Recognition.
___ Cum Laude - $250
