A SEASON O F CELEB RAT I O N S Crew Club Ma rks 15th Ye a r The Crew Club at the University can trace its beginnings to 1987 when three sophomores banded together to form the college’s first rowing team. Sophomores Tom Shields, Tom McCloskey and John Owens – all of the class of 1990 – united their diverse talents with a common interest in rowing. Shields handled administrative matters, Owens took care of finances and scheduling, and McCloskey was the coach. Having established their respective roles, the group was up and ... well ... rowing. The first item of business was the purchase of a shell and oars, recalls Tom Shields, Ph.D. “ On a rainy day in Ma rch 1988, our team members went to Philadelphia to examine a wooden Pocock Ei g h t that was for sale by Temple Un i ve r s i t y,” he says. “To Temple the boat was an unused relic taking up pre c i o u s space, but to us it was a humble and exciting beginning.” In the fall of 1983, Fr. Bill Gavin, S.J., new to T h e Un i versity of Scranton and to Campus Mi n i s t ry, stood up at Sunday liturgies and invited anyone interested in helping put together a new re t reat to attend a meeting that week. To his surprise, several dozen students showed up. This was the beginning of the Se a rch Re t reat pro g r a m that continues to this day, a re t reat that has impacted 1,500 Un i versity students over the last 20 ye a r s . This weekend re t reat is composed of five talks give n by members of the student team, and focuses on themes such as “Walls: What keeps me from being me?”, “Christian Living,” “Conflicts,” and “The Fo u rth Da y,” which speaks to ways that the students can live out the re t re a t in eve ryday life. Integral to the re t reat experience are the monthly follow-up meetings called re n ewals. In the years that followed, the team expanded to include a men’s JV team and women’s varsity and JV teams. T h e re we re also novice teams. Along the way there was a core group of individuals that would remain instrumental in moving the team forw a rd. “The team was also fortunate to have a ve ry caring and understanding club moderator, Fr. Neil McLaughlin,” says Dr. Sh i e l d s . The teams practiced on the Susquehanna River near Fa l l s – suffering through cold morning practices with no dock and no launch. Still, the team members endured, and the Club grew. All the hard work, sacrifice and occasional disappointment proved worthwhile during an early morning practice along the Susquehanna Rive r. “ In those early hours, you could see the mist on the water ... observe the leaves changing on the hillsides... we had the river to ourselves,” says Dr. Shields. “Memories like these, and the friendships that we re made, have given the founders years of enjoyment that far exceed any of their expectations in those early, naïve ye a r s .” The Crew Club established 15 years ago continues to t h r i ve, with 50 members under the direction of captains Te rence Mo r l e y, Thomas Braun and Alvin Ab d i l l a . Still Se a rc h i n’ After All These Ye a r s gather for spiritual conversation as well as social time. On 21-22 Se p t e m b e r, the Un i versity will host Se a rc h #50, re p resenting 20 years of searching for and discove r- ing Christ present in our students and in the Un i ve r s i t y c o m m u n i t y. Plans are now underway to celebrate the rich tradition of the Se a rch community by offering a oned a y, on-campus Re u n i o n / Re n ewal for all Se a rch alumni. “We hope to give our current students a sense of the rich history to which they belong, and to encourage alumni to reflect on the ways the re t reat has impacted and continues to impact their lives,” says Cathy Ga v i g a n Seymour ’90, Associate Campus Mi n i s t e r. UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS 1998-2003 “A Feast of Re d e d i c a t i o n” In October 1998 the Reverend Joseph Michael McShane of the Society of Jesus took the podium at his Inauguration... a moment he eloquently described as a “feast of rededication.” Academic Life Academic life has been strengthened by such initiatives as: • An annual Honors Convocation, Faculty Day and Faculty Clubs to foster collegiality among the faculty • The Clavius Fund to support interdisciplinary research projects. • The addition of six new academic programs Although he consistently points to and praises the w o rk of others within the Un i versity community, Fr. McSh a n e’s eye for detail can be found in eve ry aspect of campus life. As Fr. McShane leaves the Un i versity to become the President of Fo rdham Un i ve r s i t y, New Yo rk City on 1 Ju l y, The Scranton Journal p resents this re t ro - s p e c t i ve of the past five years in recognition and gra t i t u d e of Fr. McSh a n e’s dedicated service to the Un i ve r s i t y. Campus Life Life on campus has been invigorated in many ways, including: • The formation of Freshman Learning Communities • The establishment of the Office of International Programs and Services • The initiation of a President’s Ball for students • The introduction of heraldic banners at Commencement The Freshman Residential College provides a forum for freshmen to live alongside other students who share curricular interests or areas of major study. The inauguration of Rev. Joseph M. McShane, S.J., 2 October 1998. The academic achievements of students are celebrated each fall during Honors Convocation. A Vision for the Future The University community completed and made great strides in implementing its five - year Strategic Plan – A Community of Scholars, A Culture of Excellence. In addition, the University completed a Campus Master Plan, which offers a vision for campus deve l o p m e n t over the next 20 years. New and Renovated Facilities In the last five years, the Un i versity deve l- oped and enhanced a number of facilities and completed other improvements to campus. Among the improvements are : • Construction of Brennan Hall • C o n s t ruction of the Mu l b e r ry Pl a z a t ownhouses and development of Ma d i- son Sq u a re, another townhouse complex scheduled for completion this fall • Implementation of a campus-wide lighting project • Completion of a compre h e n s i ve pro j e c t that has placed sprinklers in eve ry campus residence hall and residence house • Renovations to O’Hara Hall and Hyland Hall, including the creation of the University Art Gallery B rennan Hall, the most technologicallyadvanced building on campus, was dedicated in the fall of 2000. 2 6 T H E S C R A N T O N J O U R N A L
