MEASURE M BICYCLE PEDESTRIAN PROJECTS<br />

BICYCLE SAFETY AND EDUCATION<br />

Project Scope:<br />

Implement bicycle safety programs focused on educating <strong>the</strong> public and, in particular, school children.<br />

Additional Project Details:<br />

The <strong>Sonoma</strong> <strong>County</strong> Bicycle Coalition (SCBC) has requested funds and been approved for two programs as part of<br />

this project: Safe Routes <strong>to</strong> Schools and Bike <strong>to</strong> Work Day. Safe Routes <strong>to</strong> Schools creates activities and materials<br />

<strong>to</strong> educate and promote safety through Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, Engineering and Evaluation (Five<br />

E’s). The Bike <strong>to</strong> Work Day is designed <strong>to</strong> encourage commuters <strong>to</strong> try bicycling <strong>to</strong> work, school or errands during<br />

May and also <strong>to</strong> increase <strong>the</strong> public’s awareness and respect for bicyclists.<br />

Project Status / Schedule:<br />

SCBC uses <strong>the</strong> funds <strong>to</strong> outreach <strong>to</strong> schools within <strong>Sonoma</strong> <strong>County</strong> in order <strong>to</strong> increase participation and encourage<br />

schools <strong>to</strong> start <strong>the</strong>ir own Safety and Education programs with a goal of increasing walking and bicycle ridership <strong>to</strong><br />

and from schools and promote healthy and active lifestyles. The funds for <strong>the</strong> Bike <strong>to</strong> Work Day program are used<br />

<strong>to</strong> increase participation in Bike <strong>to</strong> Work Day activities and <strong>to</strong> produce advertisements and promotional material.<br />

Fiscal Year <strong>2011</strong>-12 Appropriations and Disbursements:<br />

SCBC had $10,317 in carry over from <strong>the</strong> prior year’s appropriations for Safe Routes <strong>to</strong> School. The Coalition had<br />

carry forward balance of $3,425 for <strong>the</strong> Bike <strong>to</strong> Work program from <strong>the</strong> previous fiscal year. SCTA appropriated<br />

a <strong>to</strong>tal of $60,000 <strong>to</strong> fund both programs in FY11-12 ($45,000 for Safe Routes <strong>to</strong> School and $15,000 for Bike<br />

<strong>to</strong> Work). The SCTA disbursed $37,706 <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Coalition for SRTS and $18,425 for BTW this year. SCBC carries<br />

forward a balance of $17,611 for future years’ expenditures on SRTS.<br />
