We have all heard the expression, “actions speak louder than words.” Though one can speak about the
changes they would like to see in the world or in their community, real change happens when we model
the change we hope to see. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world” – that
philosophy guides us each and every day at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. From our home-like adoption
habitats to our positive reinforcement training philosophy, doing what is best to strengthen the human-animal bond is
at the heart of every action.
As an organization that believes education is the key to promoting the human-animal bond, one of the most effective
ways we can educate the community is by demonstrating best practices ourselves. For instance, we feel that homeless
pets deserve the same level of care that an owned animal would receive, including not just food, water, and shelter, but
also complete medical care and unconditional love. In this issue, you will read about Janet, a sweet, young Shepherd
mix that received extensive surgery to overcome a congenital health problem that may have ended her life if left
untreated. When healthy pets are admitted to the San Diego Humane Society, they are able to move to the adoption
floor quickly. However, pets with treatable medical conditions may utilize many resources before becoming available for
adoption. By offering this kind of thorough care to Janet and other homeless pets like her, we hope that all pet owners
will, within their resources, extend the same level of care to their own pets.
As we successfully work towards a day when every pet is welcomed into a home as a member of a family, we hope
that the actions we model each day at the San Diego Humane Society will bring our community closer to this goal as
well. When a family that keeps their pet in the backyard visits our shelter for the first time and sees pets in home-like
environments, perhaps that family will feel inspired to open up their living room to their own pet. Before you know it,
they may even be playfully fighting for space on the bed with that pet!
When disaster strikes and San Diegans turn on the news to see our Animal Rescue Reserve (ARR) out on the front
lines rescuing animals in peril, we hope that families will assess their own disaster preparedness plans for their pets.
Just as we want our ARR volunteers to be prepared for any and all situations, we hope the community at large will
follow our lead and put disaster preparedness best practices into use in their own homes.
From the adoption habitats to the ARR’s rescue efforts, all of the San Diego Humane Society’s programs and
services are funded solely through contributions from donors like you. We are not affiliated with any other local, state
or national organization such as the Humane Society of the United States in Washington D.C. or the ASPCA in New
York. Charity Navigator, an organization that helps donors make responsible charitable gift decisions by ranking
the financial health of nonprofits, has awarded the San Diego Humane Society its highest four-star rating for three
consecutive years. This is an honor bestowed on fewer than six percent of charities they evaluate nationwide, so you
can rest assured that your contribution to the San Diego Humane Society is being used in ways that will achieve the
most effectiveness and provide the greatest impact to the animals we care about in our community.
The San Diego Humane Society continues to strive to be a beacon for animal welfare, yet our light cannot shine
without your help. Just as your utility bill will continue to grow with each new lamp you plug in, our ability to shine
brighter depends upon your contribution. It is because of you that we have been able to achieve so much, and it is
through your continued support that we will be able to model best practices for many years to come.

Dearest Humane Society,
Last week I visited the San Diego Humane
Society in search of a small animal companion. I
immediately fell in love with Mocha, an adorable
hamster who just had surgery to remove two
lumps (one cancerous) from her body. Since I have
been caring for small pets for more than 13 years,
one of whom needed surgery, I felt familiar and
comfortable with the recovery process. I brought
Mocha home that day, and she truly could not be a more charming little critter! I love
to see her so curious about her servings of fresh fruits or vegetables. Healthy, happy
and curious, I have to keep a close eye on her or she will just take off running! She
adores rolling around the house in her plastic ball, and my dog, Marli, loves to run
after her. Thank you for bringing Mocha into our lives!

I adopted Buggy and Iggy from a Mobile
Adoption event and am absolutely thrilled
with my two fantastic kittens! Every morning,
they wake me by galloping up and down the
hallway or meowing at the birds in a tree
outside my window. Buggy is the lap cat, but
Iggy is constantly seeking attention, too. They
sweetly follow me around the house and enjoy
snuggling. I am so thankful to the San Diego Humane Society for the hard work and
dedication that goes into saving and bettering the lives of animals in need. Buggy and
Iggy are true members of the family, bringing so much joy, fun and love into my life.

Greetings Humane Society!
As a senior citizen, I thought that I might be too old to
get another dog, yet life felt incomplete without one.
After looking online and visiting shelters for months, I
found Luca, a 10-month-old Maltese mix. This ball of
energy was a bit frustrating and exhausting in the first
month, but ultimately such a rewarding experience.
Today, Luca is a smart, obedient and happy little guy
who I could never imagine living without. His favorite
activity is going to the dog park where we both socialize with new friends. Life with
Luca is good, and I’m grateful for all the caring people who helped make it possible.

Janet’s
Story of
Recovery

Resilient as she is adorable, Janet was born on May 15,
2009. When she first came to the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA, this German Shepherd mix seemed like
most puppies her age, full of vibrant joy and playfulness.
When she transitioned from nursing to eating solid food, however, it
became clear that Janet was very different. After just a few weeks in
the world, she was battling for her life.
Humane Society veterinarians discovered that Janet was born with Vascular Ring Anomalies,
or malformations of the vessels that leave and return to the heart. She suffered from a lifethreatening
abnormality called Persistent Right Aortic Arch (PRAA), where a remnant band
of tissue from the heart crosses over the esophagus and pinches it off deep within the chest.
As a result, food could not pass beyond this “pinch.” The food quickly filled up her esophagus,
stretching it beyond its normal limitations and causing permanent tissue damage. Every time
Janet ate, she would regurgitate, and it rapidly became impossible to meet her nutritional needs.
On top of everything, while diagnostic work was being performed to determine the extent of her
condition, Janet developed a severe case of pneumonia.
To provide Janet with the best possible chance at survival, the San Diego Humane Society
Veterinary Medicine Department sought out support from the local medical community. Experts
in the field quickly partnered with the Humane Society to formulate an extensive treatment and

Fur Ball on Aug. 15. More than 450 guests, 150 dogs and even one bunny
turned out for the festivities honoring Dr. Judith Muñoz for her 16 years of inspiring
vision and dedicated service to the Humane Society.
The campus sparkled under the “Catch the Royal Wave” theme, decorated
with seashells, vibrant gold, ocean blue and coral tones, and elegant orchids
donated by ProFlowers. The gala was emceed by celebrity hosts Dave Mason of
The Walrus 105.7 FM and Clear Channel’s Pamela Howe and was chaired by
San Diego Humane Society Trustee Beverly Oster Ornelas. Jeffrey Strauss of
Pamplemousse Grille prepared the evening’s delectable dinner. The fundraiser also
included an amazing painting performance by Splash! Animals, a silent auction,
raffle drawings, doggie contests and an exciting live auction with auctioneer Bill
Menish. This year, San Diego’s most glamorous dog-friendly gala netted more than
$103,000 which will support the Humane Society’s vital programs and services.

A Tail-Wagging Celebration
Dog lovers from around the county visited the San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA for Barktoberfest, a unique dog-focused adoption event, held on Oct. 10.
In addition to matching adoptable pets with new families, the Humane Society
accepted a special honor on behalf of the city of San Diego – for the second year,
San Diego was voted America’s most dog-friendly large city by Dog Fancy magazine!
The adopt-a-thon event included a Canine Carnival featuring booths with helpful information from the San Diego Humane
Society’s Animal Rescue Reserve and Behavior and Training programs as well as the County of San Diego Department of
Animal Services. Complimentary treats from Fiji Yogurt and Boudin Bakery, cool prizes provided by the PETCO Foundation,
and fun doghouse displays by Marrokal Design & Remodeling made the event a barking good time for all.
Thank you to all the dog lovers that made this year’s Barktoberfest a resounding success! Together, we found homes for
dozens of pups and a few felines, too!

Ask the Doctor
Annual Exams: An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound
of Cure
Q: Should I take my dog to the vet
only when he is sick, or do pets need
regular check-ups like humans do?
– Pet Parent in Point Loma
A: Your question is an important one,
one that every pet owner should ask.
While many of us think of our pets as
having human traits, your dog is still
limited by her four paws and non-verbal
communication when it comes to letting
you know if she is isn’t feeling well. It’s
important to regularly monitor her eating
and drinking habits for changes, but that
alone may not give you the full picture
of what is going on inside her body. Most
animals, especially cats, have an innate
ability to mask very serious issues until
the problem has gone on for a significant
amount of time, making treating the
condition more difficult. So, how do you
really know when your fuzzy best friend
is feeling good and is as healthy as she
can be? The best place to start is a good
physical examination with annual checkups
to monitor your pet’s health from year
to year.
What will your veterinarian look at
during a physical examination? Just as in
humans, the body systems of an animal
all work together. It is not uncommon to
see manifestations of the same problem
in separate systems. Your veterinarian
will pool all the information from their
examination to form an opinion about
the overall health of your pet. An exam
essentially starts at the nose and ends at
the toes. While the full list is quite long,
here are a few things that your veterinarian
may be checking for:
• Eyes, ears and nose: Problems here
can be as simple as an infection, but
the state of these organs can also give
clues to more serious concerns like liver
disease, diabetes, and immune mediated
disorders.
• Oral examination: In addition to
checking the condition of the teeth, it’s
important to evaluate your pet’s gums,
mucus membranes, and soft tissues
of the mouth, which can give valuable
information about total body health.
• Heart and lungs: There are many
breeds of dog and cat alike that develop
heart conditions as they get older. Your
veterinarian will check for murmurs in
the heart, asthma or other breathing
difficulties, and fluid in the lungs.
• Abdominal palpation: This is where
your doctor will physically press on your
pet’s stomach to feel for any spots that
might be painful to the touch, any organ
enlargement, masses, or even bladder
stones. Liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder
and intestines can all be quite thoroughly
screened by this technique.
• Skin and hair coat: Your pet’s
“wrapping” can tell us a lot about the
package inside. Most diseases of the
immune system and endocrine systems
are expressed by conditions of the skin
and nails. Masses, allergies and certain
parasites can also be noted on this
examination.
• Lymph nodes: There are five sets of
lymph nodes, an important part of the
immune system, that are usually checked
during a routine exam. Each set filters
foreign particles from specific regions of
the body and, if enlarged, can indicate
inflammation in that region. Enlargement
of multiple lymph nodes can be a clue to
the presence of cancer in a pet.
• Musculoskeletal: Checking the pet’s
muscle and skeletal condition can help
pinpoint areas of pain, such as pain
caused by arthritis. It can also give us a
good idea about your pet’s overall weight,
exercise and diet conditions.
• Genitourinary: Even if your pet
has been spayed or neutered, it is still
important to check the reproductive and

urinary system organs. Checking these
structures sometimes finds abnormalities
that can be quite serious yet would likely
go undetected by the pet’s owner.
As you can see, an annual examination
is really a combination of 10-12 smaller
exams related to multiple body systems.
If concerns or problems are found during
the annual exam, your veterinarian will
likely suggest following up the exam with
other diagnostic tools such as blood tests
or x-rays. We now know that, just like in
humans, early detection and treatment
of medical issues can lead not only to
preventing less expensive treatments later
on but also to extending your pet’s length
and quality of life.

s A Cheetah’s Best Friend
In the case of a cheetah named Bakari, there’s no friend
closer than Miley, a 2-year-old Labrador mix. Adopted by the
Zoological Society of San Diego from the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA, Miley is an official San Diego Zoo cheetah
pal, and her job is to help Bakari ease into his role as an
animal ambassador. Through her outgoing and people-loving
personality, Miley keeps Bakari relaxed and confident in new
situations. Together, the two educate visitors in the Zoo’s
“Backstage Pass” program, raising awareness for both wildlife
conservation and pet adoption.
s A Featured Pet Finds His Happy Home
Staff and volunteers alike delighted with the happy
news of Buster’s adoption. Buster, a sweet 4-year-old
Shepherd mix whose story of rescue by the Humane
Investigations team was featured in the Fall issue of
AnimalFare, was adopted in September. He was a favorite
of all who came in contact with him. Buster’s sweet
disposition and affectionate ways were a true testament to
the healing powers of love in the face of adversity.

Celebrating Our Volunteers
Oct. 4 was a day of festive food and celebration
at the San Diego Humane Society. Volunteers were
treated to an afternoon appreciation picnic that
included a talk from renowned author and radio
personality Dr. Richard Lederer, who signed copies
of his latest releases A Treasury for Cat Lovers and A
Treasury for Dog Lovers. Special awards were given
to the dedicated volunteers that have reached the
milestones of five, 10, 15, 20 and even 35 years of
devoted service to the Humane Society.

s Pet First Aid: What Every Pet Parent
Should Know
On Oct. 17, the San Diego Humane Society held one
of its most popular courses, First Aid for Cats and Dogs.
Presented in partnership with the American Red Cross, this
educational workshop consisted of four hours filled with
training and hands-on practice. Students learned a variety
of skills, such as treatments for choking, snakebites, broken
bones and more. Our pet first-aid class is one of many adult
education programs offered each month.

The Basic Animal Law Enforcement Academy provided students
with training in the California animal laws and appropriate
animal care needed to become a Humane Investigations Officer.
In addition to educating students inside the classroom, our
Investigations team staged real-life scenarios to provide students
with the opportunity to put education into practice. Above,
students practice collecting evidence at a mock crime scene.

Running for a Cause
Hundreds of pet lovers and canines enjoyed the
annual “Coastwise Mile” run along the scenic La
Jolla coast on Saturday, Oct. 3. Many pups were
adorned in the latest and greatest fashions for the
Doggy Costume Contest. The San Diego Humane
Society extends special thanks to the Coastwise
Capital Group for donating proceeds from the event
to support the Humane Society’s programs and
services.

Teaching Your IRA to Roll Over
If you are at least 70.5 years old, you may find that sharing
tax-favored assets through an IRA rollover gift can be a
wonderful way to continue helping people and animals in
our community. You can make a direct charitable gift to the
San Diego Humane Society and SPCA in any amount up to
$100,000 during a single year from your IRA assets without
having to pay federal taxes on the withdrawal, and it satisfies
your mandatory distribution requirement.
To receive all the benefits of the law, your gifts must be
distributed directly from your IRA by your administrator to
the San Diego Humane Society, so please do not withdraw the
funds yourself. It is not known whether this IRA provision will
be available beyond 2009, so you may want to consider making
such a gift during this year. We also suggest that you talk with
your tax advisor to be sure a rollover gift would be appropriate
for you and that the transaction will happen correctly. Donors
of any age can still make a deferred gift of an IRA or other
retirement account by naming the San Diego Humane Society
and SPCA as a beneficiary of their account.

Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation Funds Pet-Assisted Therapy
The Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation has been
supporting the San Diego Humane Societyand SPCA’s
Pet-Assisted Therapy (P-AT) program for the last five
years by funding the minivan that transports volunteers and
animal ambassadors on thousands of visits to facilities serving
people of all ages. In July 2009, the Foundation approved a
grant for $20,000 to provide general operating support for
the P-AT program, which is staffed by one part-time program
coordinator and more than 110 dedicated volunteers.
The P-AT program brings the joy and unconditional love
of animals to children and adults in hospitals, health care
facilities and assisted living centers across San Diego County.
Twice each day, seven days a week, Humane Society volunteers
bring animals to visit people who aren’t able to experience the
joys of pet companionship due to their living situations. Last
year, the P-AT program made visits to 589 facilities, touching
the lives of more than 11,000 people. This year, these visits
will be made possible because of the generosity of the Ellen
Browning Scripps Foundation.

a perfect example of such a program. We extend our heartfelt

Diego Humane Society over the past 13 years.
