Welcome Back!
Dear Parents and Guardians
For those families returning to Claude Garton, welcome
back! And for those families new to our school community,
a very warm welcome! I hope that everyone was able to
take advantage of the wonderful summer weather we had
to spend time with family and friends.
The summer was a busy time at Claude. We are very
pleased to welcome the Little Lions Daycare to our building,
offering before and after school care for school-aged
children, as well as all day care for infants, toddlers, and
preschoolers. We also had our parking lot renewed this
summer, as well as a new gym divider installed to allow for
daily physical education classes for almost all our students.
Now more than ever, Claude Garton is a great place for our
kids!
The education and well-being of your child are very important
to me and all of the staff at Claude. We are committed
to making your child’s experience here a positive one with a
focus on three areas: character development, academic
success, and active, healthy living. In particular, we hope
to instil a sense of community and responsibility along
with a love of life-long learning.
We all look forward to a wonderful school year
and hope to see you at our Open House next
Thursday, September 15th!
Sincerely,
Todd Miller,
Little Lions Daycare
As noted above, Claude Garton School
is now a host site for the Little Lions
Daycare. This daycare operates independently
of the school. If you have any
questions or are interested in enrolling,
please call them directly at 344-2283.
BREAKFAST CLUB
The Boys and Girls Club is looking
for a breakfast club supervisor
for Claude Garton (paid position,
7:30—9:30 a.m.). Please call
Lee-Ann at 623-0354, ext. 111 if
you are interested.
CHARACTER
RECOGNITION
Lakehead Public Schools has
recognized the importance of
character education development
for our students. The
following values have been
identified as key to helping
students grow as citizens in
our society:
Integrity, Acceptance,
Responsibility, Empathy, and
Respect.
We weave these values into
our daily teaching and interactions
with students. Thank you
for that most important role
you play in helping your children
to understand and model
these critical values.
We have ordered signage for our
new parking lot. In the meantime,
please use the first access point
(closest to Leslie) as an entrance,
and the one further away as an exit.
Thank you!
Success Tips for School…
Tip #1: Regular Attendance
Regular attendance is essential to help maximize
your child’s success at school. Students
that arrive on time and attend regularly are
more able to comfortably follow routines, follow
the flow of lessons more easily, and generally
are much more likely to read at grade
level and develop key numeracy skills. Please
help to ensure that your child has a healthy
breakfast and arrives at the school by 8:40 for
the first bell (students arriving after the bell
must report to the office first for a late slip).
For unavoidable absences, please call the
school at 683-6289 and be sure to send a note
when the child returns.

NUTRITION BREAKS
Our school’s balanced day allows students to have two
breaks for eating and recreation. Please ensure that
your child’s lunchbag is full of healthy foods that help
him or her stay alert and active throughout the day. Protein,
fruits and vegetables should make up the majority
of the food. For Grades 1—6, nutrition break times are
as follows:
10:20—10:45 (10 min. in, 15 min. out)
12:25—1:15 (20 min. in, 25 min. out)
Kindergarten students have a different schedule that has
been communicate directly via those teachers, and 7/8
classes, while having a slightly shorter morning break,
are still encouraged to bring a
snack for the morning.
Milk will again be sold at 2nd
Nutrition Break. The cost is
65 cents or $10 for a milk
card (16 milks).
Pizza lunches will take place every Wednesday. Students
are welcome to purchase hot and nutritious pizza
in the school foyer (supplied by Angelo’s on Hodder) that
meets the healthy foods criteria.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS!!
Any parents with existing CBCs need to
come in to sign an offence declaration to
update the files.
Any parent interested in volunteering at the
school needs a CBC and should start the
process soon as it takes 8-10 weeks to be
completed. This is especially important if you
are interested in volunteering for Kingfisher
trips.
We are always looking for more volunteers
and thank the many families that offer their
time and skills to our school community!
Lunchroom Supervisors
We are looking for additional lunchroom supervisors
(both regular and on-call) to help provide
a safe and welcoming atmosphere for our students
during 2nd nutrition break. If you have
some time available midday and you enjoy working
with children, please call the school to find
out more about this paid position.

PLEASE GET INVOLVED
School Council
The first meeting of the School Council will be held
on Wednesday, September 28th from 6:30 to
8:00 in the school staffroom. ELECTIONS will be
held at this first meeting for positions of chair (or cochair),
secretary and treasurer. Nomination forms
can be found in the office at the school. Meetings
are held approximately six times per year, on the
third Wednesday of the month. This committee advises the
school on matters of interest to the parents and the community.
It assists in developing school priorities and shaping school policies
and procedures. Your input and interest is most welcome!
Home and School
Our Home and School organization plays a vital role in raising
funds for the schools. All of our kids benefit through the field trips
and equipment these funds provide. You can volunteer as much
or as little as your schedule allows. Please contact Nancy Frech
at nfrech@tbaytel.net if you can help out or for more information.
LET US COMMUNICATE
WITH YOU VIA E-MAIL!
At the beginning of school you should
have received an email request form.
If you haven’t already done so, we encourage
you to fill this out and return it
to the school. Starting in October, you
will then receive newsletters and other
school information electronically. We
can then communicate with you more
efficiently and reduce our paper use.
Families that do not choose to opt for
this system will continue to receive
paper copies.
PLEASE JOIN US FOR OUR ANNUAL
OPEN HOUSE!
Thursday 15 September, 5:30—6:30
Please plan to come tour the school, visit your child’s classroom, and
say hello to some familiar and new faces!
Book Fair 5:00—7:00
Come out and check out the great selection of reading material! Students
will also have a chance to visit the book fair with their classes
