SEATTLE UNIVERSITY CHOIRS
ST. JOSEPH CHURCH, SEATTLE

SEATTLE UNIVERSITY, founded in 1891, is the largest independent university in the Pacific
Northwest and one of the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. Nearly 8,000 students
are enrolled in 61 undergraduate, 33 graduate, and 21 certificate programs, including doctoral
programs in education and law.
Now celebrating one hundred and twenty years of service (2011), Seattle University is dedicated
to its mission of commitment to teaching and learning, education for values, preparation for
service, and growth of persons.
THE SEATTLE UNIVERSITY CHOIRS MISSION STATEMENT
The primary purpose of the Seattle University Choirs is to foster the growth of the person and to
enhance the enjoyment of music through its study and performance. We aim to bring more love
into the world, support each other in our growth as human beings and musicians, and enrich our
own lives and those of our audiences through the outstanding performance of great music.
SEATTLE UNIVERSITY CHOIRS
The Seattle University Choirs, under the direction of
Dr. Joy Sherman, have grown not only in number, but
also in stature in the greater Seattle area. The choirs,
composed of students, staff, faculty, and alumni of
Seattle University, are Men’s Chorale, Women’s Chorale,
University Chorale, and Chamber Singers.
The unique character of the Seattle University Choirs
is derived from the diversity and dedication of its
members. While some of the student members pursue
a fine arts major or a music minor, the majority of
singers represents all colleges and departments of
the university.
The Seattle University Choirs perform their Christmas
and Spring Concerts at St. Joseph Church on Capitol
Hill in Seattle, plus a Family Weekend Concert and a
Lenten Prayer concert in the Chapel of St. Ignatius on
the Seattle University campus. Audience members
have offered such rave reviews as, “…an incomparable
evening of music and enjoyment!”; “Thank you for a
magical, moving, and uplifting night of music”; and
“The conducting was superb, the singing
was awesome.”
As representatives of the University, the Choirs have
also performed at significant University-affiliated
events off-campus, among them the OPUS
humanitarian awards at Benaroya Hall (2008) and the
“Women in the World” breakfast sponsored by the
Seattle International Foundation (2010).
The Seattle University Choirs are proud to live
the Jesuit mission by providing developmental
opportunities, service to the community, and praise
of God through song.

On Christmas night all
Christians sing, to hear the
news the angels bring.
News of great joy, news of
great mirth, news of our
merciful King’s birth.
Then why should men on
Earth be so sad, since our
Redeemer made us glad?
When from our sin he set us
free, all for to gain our liberty.
When sin departs before his
grace, then life and health
come in its place.
Angels and men with joy
may sing, all for to see the
newborn King.
All out of darkness we have
light, which made the angels
sing this night.
Glory to God and peace to
In the bleak midwinter,
frosty wind made moan.
Earth stood hard as iron,
water like a stone.
Snow had fallen
snow on snow,
snow on snow
In the bleak midwinter,
long ago.
Our God, heav’n cannot hold him,
nor earth sustain.
Heav’n and earth shall flee away,
when he comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter,
a stable place suffic’d
the Lord God almighty,
Jesus Christ.
Enough for him, whom cherubim
worship night and day,
A breast full of milk
and a manger full of hay.
Enough for him, whom angels
fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel
which adore.
What can I give him,
poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd,
I would bring a lamb.
If I were a wise man,
I would do my part.
Yet what I can I give him,
give my heart.

Chamber Singers - Women
Gloria in excelsis Deo,
Et in terra pax hominibus
bonae voluntatis.
Waken from your sleep
and arise, shepherds.
This day your Saviour is born,
your Lord is born in Bethlehem.
In a lowly stable ye shall find him.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Rise up now ye shepherds,
leave your sheepfolds.
Heard you not the good news
angels have told?
This day ye your Lord shall
behold, (No! Oh!)
Then ‘tis true, our Lord is here!
Come with me and worship
our Lord. Worship him,
worship him and bless him.
But we know not, Master,
where we shall go -
That we must press on,
is all that we know.
Hasten on, nor linger!
Angel songs the tiding proclaim:
Born our Lord, in Bethlehem.
Oh how sweet,
oh how glad the tiding!
Oh delay no longer,
haste on our road -
With our humble gifts
an ass let us load.
But what are the gifts
we could bring meet for Him,
our heavenly King?
But what are they?
Just a little milk my off’ring shall be,
Cheese and bread will be the
present from me.
Mine a little baby lamb will be.
Let us then go onward,
no more delay,
Bethlehem we’ll reach ere
dawning of day. Gloria!

See now, over yonder
shines a great light!
‘Tis a sign from heaven
leading us right.
Look now, brother,
can he be there?
Are we sure, that He will be there?
Will he be there?
He’s there for certain,
Him have I seen;
When I reached the stable
there I myself looked in.
Yea, I saw Him with my own eyes,
There in a manger sleeping
He lies. (He lies there.)
Hail to Thee, o Jesus,
Thou art our King.
To thy lowly crib
our homage we bring.
Thou our help and guardian be,
over Death we triumph
