E S T A T E
yA designer Bill Kowaltchuk created this gorgeous classic kitchen for one of
Toronto’s most prestigious homebuilders, Fernbrook Homes. Bill was challenged to
design an impressive gourmet kitchen for the model home of Fernbrook’s Coronation
development, a community of estate homes nestled by the banks of the East Don River
in Thornhill. The choice of a luxurious clove maple finish is the perfect complement to
the elaborately profiled solid maple Lexington door. Stacked upper cabinets with beveled
glass inserts take advantage of the high ceilings and maximize storage, while the
estate range hood acts as the focal point for the kitchen. Large crown molding accents
the stepped profile of the upper cabinets and ties the design together.
“RICH FINISHES & ORNATE ACCENTS ADD
ELEGANCE & SOPHISTICATION TO THESE
BEAUTIFUL KITCHENS”
“
WHILE THE CURRENT TREND LEANS TOWARDS
MODERN KITCHENS, OUR CLASSIC KITCHENS
ARE STILL OUR BEST SELLERS”
In addition to the rich finish, ornate accents add elegance and sophistication to this
beautiful kitchen. Matching Lexington light valance, window valance, and both tall
and corner capital posts all work to enhance this classic design. Wall and base
angled cabinets also maximize storage and accessibility, as do the pot and pans
drawers flanking and supporting the cook top. Other inviting options include a dishwasher
raised for easier loading, a bank of spice drawers and a substantial island
incorporating a bar sink and wine fridge.
The drawer system is AyA’s tandem upgrade featuring a soft close mechanism. Tired
of slamming doors? Also available are integrated soft close hinges. Granite countertops,
built-in stainless steel appliances, including an oven tower with two ovens and a
warming drawer, and neutral tile floor and backsplash round off this gourmet kitchen.
Bill Kowaltchuk - Designer
For more than 25 years, Bill Kowaltchuk has been designing kitchens for
Toronto’s most respected builders. He has been working with Fernbrook
homeowners. With a focus on architectural integrity and creative problem
solving, Bill’s low key and personable style has gained him many accolades.
Rangehoods
The essence of a classic design is in the details. Ornamentation,
from posts and crown molding to decorative accents such as
corbels and scrolls are the finishing touches which elevate the
ordinary to the extraordinary. Revel in the details!
POSTS are versatile and come in a wide
variety of sizes and styles. Whether the
posts function to support a countertop or
frieze and crown, or just to balance a
composition with their elegance, they are
a must have in any elegant kitchen.
TRADITIONAL RANGE HOOD
This versatile hood becomes the focal point in any classic kitchen. Used in
traditional style kitchens, this hood can also crossover to a contemporary
transitional style with ease. The crown details, along with clean lines make this
centerpiece one of AyA Kitchens’ most widely used range hood.
DECORATIVE ACCENTS can be a floral
scroll or a counter supporting corbel.
Often based on classic designs from antiquity,
many of AyA’s decorative accents
are hand carved and finished to lend a
beauty that withstands the test of time.
CROWN MOLDING is the detail which
pulls a classic kitchen together. At its best
when incorporated into a design which
steps uppers both in height and depth,
the mitred corners of AyA’s large crown
molding are beautiful to behold.
CONTEMPORARY RANGE HOOD
A variation of the Traditional Range Hood, the Contemporary Range Hood
once again demonstrates the flexible design capabilities of AyA Kitchens
product line. Clean lines and contemporary detailing contribute to the overall
sleekness of this hood front.
VALANCE, whether for windows or
lights, it’s an ideal way of finishing the underside
of upper cabinets. Light valance
plays the practical role of hiding under
cabinet lighting. Window valance, is an
elegant finishing touch.
THE ATMOSPHERE OF A ROOM
mages of Old European Charm are conjured up in your
mind when you first lay your eyes upon AyA’s Vintage Collection.
The product of fine craftsmanship and hand finishing, including
such time honoured techniques as glazing, crackling, distressing
and rub through detailing, AyA’s Vintage line is sure to appeal to
the most discerning furniture aficionados.
DOORS IN THIS COLLECTION:
Finishes included in our Vintage Collection are Distressed (with or
without glazing) & Antique Seafoam, Latte, Mushroom and Black.
– distressing with rub through, glazing and crackle finish.
Any of these finishes are ideal for accent pieces or throughout the
kitchen.
The featured piece is a combination of Glazed Latte with Antique
Seafoam. Additional details such as fascia panels with carved
applied mouldings, large crown moulding, beaded panels, décor
panels, arched valence and traditional posts customize this multifunctional
Although AyA prides itself on its automated, state of the art
finishing processes, there are certain looks and finishes which
can only be achieved by hand. Our master finishers are
experts in the fine art of glazing, distress and antiquing - all
key elements of AyA’s premium Vintage collection. Care and
attention to detail go in to every piece to ensure a consistency
of finish yet maintaining the individuality of every piece.
Although our hand finishes are most commonly applied to
painted finishes, AyA also offers a hand finished alternative
with a selection of our stained finishes. Blackened, mocha
and frosted glazes can be used to accentuate the detailing
of our wood doors and add a richness to the overall finish.
When applied to certain wood species, in particular oak,
these glazes also accentuate the wood’s natural grain.
MARGARET’S
DESIGN
INSPIRATIONS
EUROPEAN INSPIRED KITCHENS ARE HOT, BUT
WHAT IS HOT IN EUROPEAN KITCHEN DESIGN?
Innovative storage solutions, bold high gloss colours, horizontal grain patterns
and a variety of metal accents seem to have taken the lead. One particularly
popular design element is the use of floating shelves and the almost entire
elimination of upper cabinets. A question comes to mind… Is this a trend that
will take over in the North American market? European trends have inspired
a huge movement to Urban and Contemporary designs in North America. In
the past few years this styling was reserved almost exclusively to downtown
living – lofts with high ceilings, new condominium projects and renovated city
town homes. We are now seeing this style move to the outskirts of the city –
both for renovation projects and new homes.
Understanding where the market is going, but not simply following the latest
trends, AyA has just launched a unique new collection of European inspired
doors in sustainable exotic wood species. In addition to being available in
the traditional vertical grain treatment, these doors, and all supporting accessories,
are also available with horizontal grain. Imagine the striking look of
the horizontal grained Zebrano Stratus door, flanking a fireplace or encapsulating
a floating entertainment center. Picture the horizontal grain of Wenge
in an open concept kitchen with wide flip up doors and stainless steel face
hardware. Envision, if you will, a Bamboo vanity in a Zen like oasis - perfect
for both our trend setting and environmentally minded clientele… the possibilities
are endless!
AyA has continued to expand its Urban and Contemporary collections to include
new additions to the MODA laminate series. High gloss solid colours
combined with the new wood grain laminates (again available with either
vertical or horizontal grain) will be sure to please our most stylish and sophisticated
clients. My personal favourite is the combination of the dark, horizontal
grained Shadow Oak Vista with High Gloss Ivory Modena – sleek, sophisticated
with the added bonus of being a practical choice for everyday living.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the addition of the Apex door to our
Glass Works collection – a minimalist inspired ultra thin aluminum frame with
Lacobel glass available in Mirado, Grey and two new high gloss colours
– Black and Red. The sleek lines and fresh colour combinations will add
dimension and radiance to any hip, urban space.
WOOD AS NATURE INTENDED. Every species of
wood has characteristics unique to the tree from which it came. Natural graining,
colour and texture variations define the beauty of natural wood products. At AyA
we strive to obtain the most consistent grain and coloration available for each
species.
Oak
Oak has been a popular choice in cabinet construction
for a number of years due to the durability of its moisture
resistant wood. Characterized by open graining, red
oak has a natural range of color from light to dark and
mineral deposits within the grain increases its natural
beauty.
Maple
Maple is a hard, tightly grained wood that can have
colour variations from a pale white to a reddish tone. The
finish that is chosen for maple can enhance it’s natural
beauty, or subtly reduce the variations through the use of
darker stains.
Cherry
Cherry is widely renowned for its traditional majesty. A
softer hardwood, cherry has a subtle grain, enhanced
with pitting which lends itself to the warmth of historical
settings. The appearance of cherry can vary dramatically
with the stain color applied to it. Cherry is the ideal
choice if a consistent dark coloration is required or in its
natural state the reddish colour can be intensified.
Alder
Alder has a fairly straight uniformed grain with a natural
colour which ranges from light to reddish brown and
may even have peach hues. Common characteristics of
open and split knots of varying size and shape as well as
mineral stains create alder’s rustic charm.
Painted
Painted finishes are solid, opaque colour applications which do
not reveal any grain characteristics. The natural expansion and
contraction of wood doors with painted finishes can have the
effect of emphasizing the joinery. For customers who prefer a
seamless look AyA also offers a variety of painted mdf doors.
Closets
BATHROOMS
CREATING A PEACEFUL SPA LIKE AREA IN YOUR
HOME WITH THE LOOK AND FEEL OF RICH
NATURAL WOOD CABINETRY
All closets solutions are the same, or are they? AyA’s new
closet line raises the bar by offering the distinguished
furniture look of wood cabinetry specifically designed for
the closet. Imagine if you will, walking into your luxurious closet
with the feeling of true craftsmanship and high design, all in rich,
warm tones of maple, cherry, oak or alder. Our mandate at
AyA Kitchens is to bring the sophistication of our client’s homes
right into their closet. It allows our most discriminating clients to
pamper themselves not only in their kitchens, spa bathrooms and
libraries, but now in their closets as well.
Rather than the standard laminate and thermafoil offerings which
dominate the contemporary closet market, AyA offers full closet
solutions in a wide range of woods and finishes. The warmth
and beauty of real wood is accentuated by our exclusive, state
of the art UV cured finishing system which allows our designers
to bring to life the ultimate dream closet. Tall crown moulding,
furniture toe kick, solid wood legs, carved appliqués, and glass
doors are just a few items available to personalize the overall
aesthetic. Function is also a priority with clever storage features:
1 ¼” thick shelves, tilted shoe racks, jewellery drawers, tie
racks, belt racks, built in laundry hampers and pull out wood or
chrome drawers all contribute to bringing closet organization to
a superior level.
“AyA is creating truly unique and custom spaces for the most
discriminating homeowners,” said David Marcus, AyA owner
and president. “With our wide selection of finishes and design
elements, every AyA closet is designed for our customer’s specific
needs and taste.”
Peace and serenity– a balance that AyA kitchens strives to achieve for all our
sophisticated, busy clientele. Nothing emphasizes this more than our spa
baths – a great space to end a busy day and pamper yourself.
Whether it’s the warmth and beauty of maple or cherry, or the soft look of
hand painted doors, our creative designers can create a space that is truly
personalized and unique. These 3 photos, all showcasing ensuite baths for
Fernbrook Homes’ clients (see pages 4&5), demonstrate how vastly different
a space can look with the use of varying finishes on the Richmond door
style. The use of posts, upper cabinets with lighting, staggered cabinets and
open shelves all contribute to the customized feel of each space. The use
of stylish light fixtures, statuesque faucets and polished stone tops complete
your dreamy oasis!
“AYA IS CREATING
TRULY UNIQUE AND
CUSTOM SPACES FOR THE
MOST DISCRIMINATING
HOMEOWNERS,”
- David Marcus, President of
AyA Kitchens and Baths
Of course our bathroom styles are not limited to the Richmond door style.
AyA has a wide variety of different door styles which are well suited for
bathroom spaces. For instance, an urban vanity can be easily achieved with
the use of our Manhattan slab door in a multitude of finishes – stained maple,
oak, cherry or painted maple. Combined with sleek metal legs and stylish
face hardware help define the space for our most discriminating clients!
TRANSITIONAL IS WHERE IT’S AT IN THIS UPSCALE URBAN TOWNHOUSE
KITCHEN. “CONTEMPORARY TRANSITIONAL” ALLOWS THE HOMEOWNER TO
EFFECTIVELY BALANCE THEIR NEED FOR A MORE SIMPLE AND SLEEK DESIGN
WHILE STILL PRESERVING THEIR APPRECIATION FOR THE “CLASSICS”.
The concept of this space was to create a bold statement with unexpected elements that would bring together
the homeowners diverse collections of worldly pieces. The Arlington door style was the perfect choice.
This updated “shaker” style with a recessed centre panel and striking wide rails gives a dramatic feel to a
simple space. Shown here in Blackened Umber, the Arlington is casual and confident when paired with the
Classic Churchill door shown in our theatrical & crisp Ebony Maple finish. The design started with a graphic
approach of colour blocking to define and highlight the “wow” areas. To ground the space, Churchill Ebony
Maple was incorporated into the island to give a solid, furniture feel. This was replicated in the furniture
hutch located on the back wall which is in sharp contrast to the flanking umber maple cabinets - creating
a dramatic effect. The next step was to define and maximize the function of the space. The island was
designed as a fully functional work area with the sink, dishwasher, large integrated pull-out waste bin and
drawers for cutlery and utensils all contributing to a seamless combination of form and function. Stunning
glass tiles and sleek stone countertops bring together this successful mix of colour and texture to create a
space that is both casual and sophisticated.
LINE. GRAND OPEN CONCEPTS, TALL LOFTY CEILINGS, AND EXPOSED BRICK ARE ALL ELEMENTS
THAT COME TO MIND WHEN DESIGNING A BEAUTIFUL KITCHEN OF THIS CALIBER.
The two door styles featured here, Sedona and Ravenna are a tribute to the fast paced, modern lifestyle. Available in maple
and cherry woods along side a wide spectrum of stain finishes, they allow for maximum design and taste flexibility. The kitchen
pictured here showcases AyA’s Ravenna door style in Honey Cherry. The warmth and beauty of the cherry wood is in sharp contrast
to the sleek lines of the door style – very chic! Extra tall upper cabinets (49 ½” high!), sandblasted glass accents, stacked
cabinets and a dramatic, oversized cooking center with extra tall matching wood columns flanking a tall open shelf all contribute
to creating a sleek and stylish kitchen. The function of this hard working kitchen is expressed by making use of the vertical storage
space and the huge expanse of counter tops. The quartz counter top, ceramic mosaic backsplash and flamed marble floor give
texture and character to this large open space. The antique pewter square knobs reference the pillowed rails of the Ravenna
Transforming
Divine Design
with Candice Olson
The innovative and exciting design series Divine Design follows the process
of transforming an uninspired space into a fresh, contemporary room. AyA Kitchens
has had the pleasure of partnering with Divine Design for all of their kitchen cabinetry
needs. Host Candice Olson’s designs show off the true beauty of the kitchens.
Candice has a flair for seamlessly integrating classic design elements with modern
conveniences and always adding an element of “sparkle” to the space. You just
have to watch the expressions on the faces of her clients at the reveal to know that
Candice always hits her mark. “I have been working with AyA Kitchens on all of the
kitchen episodes for a few years now. The styles and variety that AyA offers enables
us to show many different styles from traditional through transitional to more contemporary,”
shares Steven Southgate, Design Supervisor of Divine Design. “On Divine
Design, we need to be able to show as many different ideas to the viewer as possible
and with AyA Kitchens’ flexible design catalogue and ability to give a customized
look, we always dazzle our homeowners!”
Dramatic effect is undeniable in the Camden Espresso Maple kitchen (top). Paired
with the polished stone counter top and backsplash, along with the “chunky” furniture
style island with breakfast counter, this space is sure to inspire many future culinary
creations! The pantry wall gives way to the needs and practicality of the storage
requirements, thus fulfilling all of the homeowner’s needs and desires.
AyA’s Lexington door style in the Glazed Latte finish (bottom left) gives an element of
sophistication. Stainless steel appliances, extra tall crown moulding, dramatic lighting
and textured backsplash, juxtaposed with the rawness of the harvest table and
iron light fixture demonstrate how contrasting elements can be effortlessly married
together – trademarks of Candice’s designs.
“The styles and variety
that AyA offers enables
us to show many different
styles from traditional
through transitional to
more contemporary,”
The Manhattan Honey Oak kitchen (middle left &
top right) accentuate the modern elements of the
space with the combination of the warm wood
tones, sleek, polished stainless steel backsplash,
etched glass doors and professional style stainless
steel appliances. The handy roll away island under
the peninsula is a fabulous contribution to a well
designed space.
The Ascot Terra Cherry kitchen (bottom right) is the
perfect example of an updated traditional space
otherwise known as transitional design. Lots of storage,
open shelves, plate rack, raised eating counter,
matching overhead canopy, theatrical marquis style
to making this refined space a focal point in the
URBAN
MODA
SIMPLICITY REIGNS IN THIS SPACIOUS EAT-IN KITCHEN WHERE THE INTERPLAY OF
MATERIALS AND TEXTURE CREATE A LUXURIOUS STATEMENT IN URBAN LIVING.
The warmth of this space is achieved first and foremost through the choice of a cinnamon finish on the Maple Manhattan door.
As with the other doors in the MODA collection, this slab door is a staple of modern, urban design. The simplicity of the door
style lends itself to the creation of architecturally bold forms and draws the eye to the details. In this case the details are to be
found in the surface hardware. The long stainless steel handles give a sleek look to the island and central kitchen area. In contrast,
more discrete square knobs were chosen for the pantry units and above the built-in fridge and ovens so that attention is
instead on the larger forms. The furniture feel of the cabinetry has been achieved by the addition of modern metal legs.
In keeping with the modern theme,
stainless steel appliances integrate
seamlessly with the tall (42” high)
Stanton doors, part of AyA’s newly
expanded GlassWorks collection.
adds an additional element of depth as well as complementing
the etched glass inserts of the Stanton doors. AyA has just
launched two new glass colours to the GlassWorks collection:
Red and Black Lacobel. As with the existing Grey Lacobel
and mirror like Mirado, these colours are achieved by applying
a film to the back of the glass resulting in a versatile
and eco-friendly high gloss alternative. These colours are a
perfect complement to Aya’s newest GlassWorks door style,
the Apex. Featuring an ultra-thin aluminum profile, the Apex
is truly the pinnacle of urban minimalism. As with its sister
door, the Meridian, the glass itself rather than the aluminum
frame has become the center of attention. The Apex pairs
nicely with any of the doors from AyA’s Urban Moda collection.
Clean lines with splashes of bold colour can act as the
perfect accent to wood, laminate or can be used throughout
to achieve high gloss perfection and an ultra modern look.
Spectacularly located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, this historic 1929 Art Deco
building was restored and added to by Toronto developer Context Developments. Winner
of a number of prestigious awards, including the Greater Toronto Homebuilders
Association “Project of the Year” as well as international interior design awards, Tip Top
Lofts is “a shining example of how to preserve a landmark historic building and combine
it with a modern addition.” The cooking area is the focal point of this hip loft kitchen
and is flanked by a tall pantry unit and built-in fridge tower both featuring the Manhattan
ebony oak door style & encased in matching panels. The frosted glass backsplash
REBECCA’S HOPE LOUNGE
“When you step through a set of glass doors and into the lounge on the 14th
floor of Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, you completely forget you’re
inside one of Canada’s most venerable cancer centers.” - Canadian Living, April 2007
AyA Kitchens and Baths had the pleasure of working with Karen Kirk, Home and Décor Editor for Canadian Living on a very
special project that is close to Karen’s heart, “The Room that Hope Built.” Karen’s niece, Rebecca Borg, passed away from acute
myelogenous leukemia (AML) in 2002. Part of Rebecca’s legacy was the vision of the transformation of the once very sterile, cold
patient’s lounge at Princess Margaret Hospital into a room that patients could hang out with friends and family – chatting, watching
a movie or admiring the spectacular view of downtown Toronto. Research shows that a comfortable environment, along with
the support of friends and family, actually plays a vital role in wellness and recovery. “This room was a dream of hospital staff for
many years because it’s so important for patients to know they have a place to go and feel comfortable” says Theo Marie Borg,
Rebecca’s mother. AyA Kitchens is proud to have been involved in a project which has touched so many peoples lives.
“Vibrant wall colour, cool red leather sofa, flat-screen TV
and electric fireplace are more reflective of a trendy and
relaxed family room than an institutional lounge.”
Keeping this delicate and important task in mind, AyA set out to create both soothing
and stylish storage solutions for the entertainment center and kitchenette. Challenges included
adhering to the requirements of the hospital – for instance extending the cabinets
to the ceiling thus helping to minimize “dust traps” as the air quality was a priority. AyA
also did patch tests on the doors with the hospital’s cleaning solutions to ensure that the
finishes would sustain routine maintenance – our finishes passed with flying colours!
Modena Ice White cabinets combined with the Vermont Cinnamon Oak coffee center
creates a light, airy kitchen highlighted by the warmth of the oak. The oak is reflected
on the opposite wall in the “family room”, housing the entertainment center.Glass doors
help give sparkle and sophistication, while once again minimizing those pesky “dust
traps”. Crown moulding, light valence, fluted posts and furniture toe kick all contribute
to making this space a home away from home!
AyA Kitchens is continually striving
to not only achieve, but to surpass
environmental and health standards.
To launch its Green Design initiative, AyA has stepped up the use of eco-friendly
products during the manufacturing process. AyA’s most recent commitment
includes the 2007 launch of a new line of environmentally safe, formaldehydefree
plywood cabinets. AyA customers now have a “no” emission alternative
to the already “low” emission standard particle board cabinets. In fact, AyA’s
standard line already surpasses industry emission standards as the cabinets
are constructed with low emissions particle board which is almost entirely
encapsulated with edge banding, melamine and veneer. It is also important to
note that AyA’s standard cabinets are made of 100% recycled and recovered
particle board which has obtained the Certification of Compliance to the
Environmentally Preferable Product Grademark Program. AyA’s commitment to
healthy environments also includes the use of only low HAPS (hazardous air
pollutants) finishes and an exclusive UV cured top coat.
Another primary goal of AyA’s Green Design Initiative is an ambitious resource
management program. AyA’s recycling and waste reduction programs are
“cutting edge” in the industry. Using the latest computerized technology to
optimize cutting reduces waste dramatically. In 2006 alone, AyA achieved
a 55% waste reduction, helping AyA achieve certification in the Woodmark
Quality Program. When it comes to recovery, the factory uses wood offcuts
wherever possible for cutting smaller panels and other pieces– again
optimizing material goods. In AyA’s finishing department, sealers and top coats
are all recycled thus accomplishing even greater waste reductions. Recently,
AyA Kitchens has joined forces with local artisans to spearhead a whole new
approach to material recycling and recovery – using solid wood off-cuts to
design everything from a trio of stylish, stackable bowls, to knife blocks and
cutting boards.
AyA commitment to sustainability extends to active involvement in the community.
AyA has partnered with school woodworking programs by providing excess
wood materials for student projects. AyA is also an active supporter of Habitat
for Humanity – by providing cabinets which do not pass their rigorous quality
standards, but are perfect for providing a new kitchen to a family in need. Not
only does this program assist valuable community projects, it also minimizes
waste products – a bonus for all involved!
