A Dutch Zeppelin, NS 3600 ex-NCS 71, with the so called “train of tears” (in Dutch: tranentrein) from
The Hague to Genua (via Arnhem and Nijmegen) where the Dutch embarked on ships to Dutch-Indië
(since 1949 Indonesia).
The picture is taken on the NS-line Arnhem-Nijmegen in 1936 at Oosterbeek-laag (Oosterbeek-lower
station). The train has a lot of sleepers type S and Y and some diners (even from the Mitropa!)
This train was taken by people who came from or went to Indië instead of staying on board till the
ship arrived in Rotterdam or Amsterdam.
From The Coupé.
Welcome aboard the first edition of what I plan to be a bi-monthly Pullman & CIWL Newsletter.
Following quite a considerable number of Emails received following the final publication of
Coupé News last December, the complementary comments and also a request that in some form
would I consider a reprise in the future.
I believe we may have come to a compromise by the production and publication on a bi-monthly
basis.
To build on the success of Coupé News I will remain dependent on readers contributing news,
articles and photographs to which I am now prepared to give up some of my time collating into the
bi-monthly publication.
As in the past this will be in the form of all aspects of Pullman and now with CIWL operations both
past, present and future and of course model railways.
All I ask of you for the time I spend I will spend in production, is for you to forward on, either by
E-mail or printing a copy, to any one you may know who will also be interested in reading about
matters Pullman & CIWL.
Changing your Email address, or wish to be removed from the mailing list, then Email to the editorial
address with your request, it’s as simple as that.
Also as in the past some readers may not receive copies as published for one reason or another, I do
get bounce backs advising that an e-mail address no longer exists or the mail box full.
In the event by the second Monday of each publication month (June, August, October, December,
February & April) your copy fails to arrive, please Email the editorial address and I will forward to you
the missing edition.
The views and articles within this publication are not necessarily those of the editor.
Information Required:
I will welcome any information relating to matters Pullman and CIWL, including any information on
both individual Pullman & CIWL cars located on your local preserved railway, museum or in use as a
static Restaurant, for inclusion within Pullman & CIWL News and also to add to the Pullman Car
Services - Archive.
Bringing Back The Brighton Belle.
The wonderful Brighton Belle, the only electric all-Pullman train in the world, succeeded the steam
service between London and Brighton in 1933 and became the world's first electric inter-city train. A
much loved railway icon, the three five-car train sets were withdrawn by BR in 1972. Now we have a
wonderful idea - an amazing feat of restoration, to bring together a complete train set and return the
Belle to the mainline! To follow progress with the restoration and help.
PULLMAN CAR NAMING PRACTICES, WERE TELEGRAPHIC CODES USED ?:
A hypothetical theory by Kevin V. Bunker - May 2011.
Thesis: While reexamining a scale plan of a Pullman heavyweight 12-1 sleeping car as published in a
past issue of Mainline Modeler magazine, I noticed the sidebar of those cars in the same plan series
that were retrofitted with air conditioning. Aside from those names which were clearly places or
personal surnames, some of the car names stood out in a peculiar way, a number of them reminding
my mental ear of the ways some old telegraphic codes’ words “sound” and appear.
For those not familiar with telegraphic codes and their historic use, I’ll give a brief overview. Those in
the world of finance and securities trading, manufacturing (locomotive builders, for instance) used or
devised pre-established codes to simplify, shorten or obscure telegraphic messages sent over public
“wires.” The shorter the message (every word counted for the telegraphic service fee) the better.
This is not dissimilar for the currently popular forms of abbreviations used by those texting to each
other on their cellular “smart phones” and in online IM messages. Telegraphic code terms were
invariably a single word, and often gibberish that sounded like an actual word that could be found in
a dictionary, whether that dictionary was English, Latin, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or French and
occasionally German. [Did they delve in Middle English names or words on occasion?] Regardless,
telegraphic code words bore no relationship whatsoever to the actual phrase or word being sent. A
fully coded message could not be easily understood on its face value without the recipient’s use of
the mating code book. Pullman Company – its highest level officers, especially – would, quite
naturally have used either its own devised version(s) or executive level code books in its wired
communications. In this regard the company would be functioning like any other large railroad or
capital equipment supplier. Railroad executives, too, regularly used telegraphic codes to obscure
their more sensitive messages.
Pullman (and Wagner, too) were obviously using their car names for dual purposes: the name chosen
lent the car an evocative or romantically exotic quality for the traveling public that noticed the
equipment in which they were traveling or someday hoping to travel. At the same time (as we know)
the names they chose were often part of a purely alphabetic series within a larger group of like cars.
Yet some nevertheless stand out above others for their peculiarity. Yes, Native American tribal words
or place names –
usually Anglicized – were abundant, though I have tried to avoid those which fit that particular
criteria.
So, let us examine sample at random some Pullman car names through time which appear to be
dictionary-valid words but may well not be. Pullman and Wagner were not the least bit shy about
using the proper names of Roman and Greek gods and goddesses, major or minor. They also seemed
to add a Roman- or Latin-sounding “ius” and “ia” to almost any word or set of consonants and
vowels to create an evocative name. Were these (some shown below) borrowed from some
telegraphic code book taken from a handy secretarial office shelf or desk or was another device
used?
Note: the following car names were drawn at random from Ralph Barger’s A CENTURY OF PULLMAN
CARS, VOL.1: ALPHABETICAL LIST (1988, First Edition, Second Printing). Nearly all of the sampled car
names were chosen by Pullman (or Wagner) near the end of the 19 th century or near the start of the
20 th up to c.1925, a time when telegraphic codes were very popular in long distance secure
communication. Some of these are clearly true English words (adjectives or nouns) but not the sort
of word anyone might typically use to name a railroad car or other object.
Edition No.01 - June & July 2011 Page 7 of 45

But what of the other names, including those of the standard steel car production period? Some of
these have even more odd spellings that further suggest code words. Considering the huge quantity
of the 12-1s that Pullman built between c.1900 and 1925, they would have had a hard time coming
up with car names without some aid beyond various dictionaries. Telegraphic code books could lend
quite a few possibilities. Think it over.
* Again, a real word but a not very kind descriptive term (look it up in an English dictionary); seems a
very odd choice for a car name except that such a word would crop up in the W’s of telegraphic code
books.
** Pullman’s love of words ending with “ia” reflecting Latin place names or provinces is amply
evident in skimming the all-time names list for their cars. However, I’m not aware that the Roman
provinces included a “Vidonia.” If the company loved these sorts of names so much, I’m surprised
they didn’t borrow the Marx Brother’s “Fredonia.” I checked the lists: that’s not there! *tsk-tsk]
Hornby Magazine LIVE 2011 – In association with Hartlepool Model Rail – July 9 th & 10 th .
Proceeds from 2011 event to Denise Taylor Cancer Trust and Great North Air Ambulance.
Admission Prices.
Adults £4.50. OAP/Children (5-15) £3.00. Family (2+3) £12.00.
The second annual Hornby Magazine LIVE! in Hartlepool exhibition is taking shape for the weekend
of July 9/10 with layouts, traders and demonstrations being organised for what is set to be a busy
weekend of railway modelling.
By early April a total of 16 layouts had been booked (others to confirm) for the event covering all
manner of prototype and scale including seven layouts featured in Hornby Magazine. Highlights
include John Houlden’s East Coast Main Line layout Gamston Bank (HM46), Dave Spencer’s Penrhos
(HM24), Bob Vaughan’s Condicote (HM7), Steve Farmer’s Wulstanton Road (HM45) and John Polley’s
London Underground Abbey Road (HM39) amongst many others. Also booked is Outwell Village, Kyle
of Lochalsh, Littleton Junction, Lookout Lake (Canadian ‘N’ gauge) and Whitby Quayside.
A new feature for 2011 is a special challenge for Hornby Magazine to build a layout in a weekend
during the show. A team of three consisting of Hornby Magazine Editor Mike Wild, contributor
Graham Muspratt and professional layout builder Richard Proudman will start the build as the doors
open to the public on Saturday July 9 with the aim of running the first trains before the end of the
show on July 10. Hornby Magazine Editor Mike Wild said: “The challenge will be a great spectacle
and we hope it will allow visitors to gain a first hand insight into how model railway construction can
be tackled. With just over 40 hours available it will be a close run thing, but we believe we can do it.”
In addition to the layout build specialist demonstrations are being arranged including Hornby
Magazine contributors and the Hornby Roadshow will be attending offering a chance to see the
latest developments on up and coming models first hand.
Richard Salmon
Newly restored Mk.1 Restaurant Car (RBR No.1674, which is on a five-year loan to the Bluebell
Railway) has, as of 30th April, temporarily joined the formation of the Bluebell's "Golden Arrow"
Pullman train to provide kitchen facilities in place of Pullman Car Fingall. Fingall, having run on the
Bluebell for 19 years after its restoration is now being dismantled, with serious rot in the timber
structure of the upper body and roof in some places, due to ingress of water between and behind
the aluminium skin. The options for the repair are currently being assessed. Once Fingall is back in
service (hopefully in 2012) the Mk.1 restaurant car will form part of the Bluebell's "Wealden
Rambler" afternoon tea train (a Mk.1 non-Pullman service).
This underlines the vital importance of getting the Bluebell's Pullman fleet (and more of its other
vintage carriages) under cover. This will be achieved this year, with the HLF-funded carriage running
shed at Sheffield Park now only requiring track to be laid into it before it can be used. It will house
the Pullmans and two other rakes of operational carriages. The next phase of "Operation
Undercover" is nearly off the starting blocks, aiming to add covered space for another 24 carriages
(largely those awaiting restoration, plus more of those currently being restored which will otehrwise
have to stand outside once completed). The reality of "preservation" is that no carriage (be it
Pullman or any other type) can really be considered properly preserved unless it can be stored under
cover when not running.
To summarise the current position of the Bluebell's Pullman fleet:
CAR No.64 (Christine) - operational.
CAR No.76 (Lilian) - operational, but will need major structural attention in the coming years
FINGALL - being dismantled for structural repairs.
CAR No.54 - stored under tarpaulin awaiting restoration - in the longer term will form the Brake for
the Bluebell's Pullman set.
DORIS - planned to be replaced by Carina, for longer term restoration as the Bluebell's second
Pullman Kitchen car.
CONSTANCE - this SER Gilbert Car (which later became a Pullman) is intended in the longer term for
restoration to operation as a heritage vehicle, to run with other Victorian SECR carriages, but might
also act as a spare kitchen to cover for the commercial requirement on the Pullman dining train.
Jerry Hawley
CAR No.79.
There was a slight delay on starting work on the car due to other problems but the car was finally
moved into the C&W shed at the end of January 2011. Work quickly began on stripping off all the
paint on the roof and derusting corroded areas using a needle gun and rotary wire brushes.
This was very time consuming due to the amount of paint that had been applied previously and the
poor surface under the paint. Once stripped and cleaned a coat of mordant solution was applied
followed by a coat of liquid plastic bonding primer. This was then covered with three coats of liquid
plastic's Soladex PU paint; this is a polyurethane paint that is very flexible and hopefully able to take
all the expansion and contraction of the riveted roof panels. Whilst the roof was being worked on,
major work was being carried out on the interior; seats and tables have been removed and damaged
frames repaired, all the saloon windows removed, and repairs to the body sides around the windows
carried out because of corrosion. They were then refitted with new sealant, and stripped and
re-varnished hardwood window facings were also refitted.
The decorative wood veneer panels were showing signs of deterioration, so these have been
stripped and satin varnished; the cause of the damage is possibly due to damp and changing
temperatures when used in winter. Both saloon ceilings have been cleaned and painted, the south
end requiring the centre ceiling panel replacing prior to painting due to the plywood delaminating
through water leaking through the roof.
All the brass fittings have been removed, cleaned and lacquered along with the interior sliding
windows; this is a time consuming process but the end result is worth it. Both the passenger
platform doors have been replaced with new, manufactured and hung by contractor Andrew Daniel.
The toilet roof tank suffered frost damage over the Christmas period and this had to be repaired.
Both vacuum cylinders have been replaced with new ones imported from India where this type of
cylinder is still being manufactured and used. The only difference is the chromed piston rod which is
a larger diameter and has a plain end that attaches to the brake lever rather than the oval eye
normally used on our rolling stock; this problem was overcome with assistance from the MPD
machinists. Once the roof was completed the car was moved to the paint shop where work quickly
progressed on the preparation for paint, and painting. Unfortunately we were not able finished the
work on time due to the late start and amount of refurbishment that had to be carried and it was
completed a week late, disappointing diners that had been booked on the first weekend it was due
to return to traffic.
Hopefully, with the amount of work carried, out the carriage will be able to run for quite some time
before it needs this kind of work again.
PEGASUS – Nick Dodson.
Car 310 PEGASUS has been in workshops this winter (2010/11) to have some small modifications
made.
Firstly, and most importantly, the car is now "dual braked". The addition of vacum brake widens her
use in various ways. We hope she will see some additional work in connection with mainline steam
operations, but more specifically, this will enable PEGASUS to visit preservation centres and lines
where (when not in mainline service) she can continue to be of valued operation.
Also added, a gas water heater system to enable the production of that vital post Pullman meal cup
My name is Tom Dalziel, I was recently searching for information on my family history and came
upon some interesting information. My Great Grandfather was Davison Dalziel who was once the
chairman of the Pullman Car Company.
I noticed the caption below from your Coupe News June 2007 Car No. 52 Page 7.
1927 – June 80 Years Ago.
June 3rd. Davison Dalziel is made an Peer of the Realm.
Meeting representatives of the Pullman Car Company Limited at London
Victoria Station. At which he received a silver model of a Pullman car
(Rosemary) as an commemorative of his Peerage.
I thought you might find it interesting to know that I have the silver model of Rosemary that was
presented to him that day. It was passed on to me by my father who received it in turn from his
father.
In turn, the ex-Brighton Belle Pullman First Class car 'Doris' moves to the 5BEL Trust as the final car
for the Brighton Belle.
The 5BEL Trust and the Bluebell Railway have been working in close partnership to achieve these
long held goals. Since the withdrawal of Pullman cars from service, 'Carina' has passed through a
number of owners, but was never returned to service. For a while she was preserved at the Hotel
Mercure in Lyon. In recent years, she has been stored by Jim Kay on the NYMR, awaiting deep
restoration. It is expected that the return to full operating standard will take several years.
The acquisition of 'Carina' is a key part of the Bluebell Railway's long-term plan for a five-car all-
Pullman Golden Arrow train, providing a much-needed second kitchen. Several years ago, the railway
acquired 'Doris' as a potential second kitchen, but recognised that the conversion from electric to
steam specification might not be optimal from a heritage standpoint. The Bluebell Railway therefore
agreed to release 'Doris' for the Brighton Belle project if another Pullman kitchen car could be found.
From The Fourgon:
I hope that you have found at least some of the content of interest within this first edition of your
‘Pullman & CIWL News’.
My thanks to those who have taken time to forward material in the form of news, articles and
photographs, without your contributions this edition would not have been published.
As with any publication, the first edition is a ‘stab in the dark’ with regard to content and layout, but I
am sure with your help the forthcoming editions will set a pattern for the future.
So it’s time to share your memories with your fellow travelers, be it a reminiscing of a past trip, an
encounter, an image or news of a specific car.
The August/September edition is a blank page at this moment.
“Information is for sharing and not for gathering dust, it costs nothing to share knowledge”.
