Fruit Trees<br />

All fruit trees are “semi-dwarf” unless noted.<br />

<strong>Plant</strong> 2 or 3 different varieties for cross-pollination unless self pollinating. <strong>Plant</strong> 15'-20' apart.<br />

Apples<br />

Apple trees provide fruit <strong>and</strong> beauty <strong>and</strong> usually produce heavily every other year.<br />

After enjoying gorgeous flowers, one can begin looking forward to the fruit apple trees produce. Fresh fruit is simply better <strong>and</strong> tastier<br />

than bin stored apples that are sold in supermarkets. There are many varieties of apple trees, all with taste, size, color, <strong>and</strong> harvest time<br />

variations. A pples do not freeze until the tem perature drops to 28.5°F in storage or outside. T he bud union (located where the<br />

scion m eets the rootstock) should not be buried in (keep it about 2 inches above) the ground when planting.<br />

01K Cortl<strong>and</strong> Apple: 4-6' ($24) A heavy annual<br />

cropper that bares large size red stripped fruit. Excellent<br />

for all uses. McIntosh <strong>and</strong> Ben Davis cross. Lowest acid<br />

content apples. [4]<br />

02K H aralson Apple: 4-6' ($25) A hardy substitute<br />

for Golden Delicious developed especially for cold<br />

northern areas. Good baking, eating <strong>and</strong> cider apple.<br />

Flesh is crisp, juicy, firm. Mildly tart flavor, not acid.<br />

Holds its shape <strong>and</strong> texture in baking. Retains good<br />

flavor in keeping. [4].<br />

03K H oneycrisp Apple: 4-6' ($26) This apple is<br />

honey sweet with a hint of tart <strong>and</strong> exceptionally crisp!<br />

Spotted red over a yellow background with juicy, crisp<br />

cream-colored flesh. Excellent for fresh eating <strong>and</strong><br />

salads, good for baking, & an excellent keeper. A mid<br />

season apple ripening from mid September to mid<br />

October. A cross of Macoun <strong>and</strong> Honeygold. [4].<br />

04K Liberty Apple: 4-6' ($26) A medium size,<br />

yellow-fleshed dessert apple. The tree is vigorous,<br />

spreading, <strong>and</strong> an annual bearer. Liberty is resistant to<br />

apple scab, cedar apple rust, fire blight, <strong>and</strong> mildew. A<br />

good choice for the home gardener. Liberty is an early<br />

blooming variety <strong>and</strong> can pollinate all other early & mid<br />

season blooming apple varieties. [4]<br />

05K Northern Spy App le: 4-6' ($25)A very<br />

old-fashioned American heirloom winter apple variety,<br />

picked in late October <strong>and</strong> used through the winter<br />

months. Northern Spy is well known for its<br />

winter-hardiness. It is a naturally vigorous variety that<br />

may take longer than most apples to come into biennial<br />

bearing. [4]<br />

06K W olf River Apple: 4-6' ($24) Wolf River<br />

apples are larger in size, up to 5 inches in diameter, than<br />

other common apple varieties. It is tart <strong>and</strong> juicy <strong>and</strong> is<br />

used more commonly for cooking pies, applesauce <strong>and</strong><br />

apple butter than eating raw. Wolf River is an old variety<br />

of apple tree that is exceptionally cold hardy <strong>and</strong> ripens<br />

mid-September to mid-October. [4]<br />

07K M acoun Apple: 4-6'' ($25) Produce very sweet,<br />

sugary, crisp apples that have a lovely aroma. They are<br />

perfect for both fresh eating <strong>and</strong> for baking. The flesh<br />

is pure white & holds in flavor well when cooked. hey<br />

are an offspring of the Liberty <strong>and</strong> is related to the<br />

McIntosh.[5]<br />

08WO Dolgo Crabapple 4-5' branched ($28) This beautiful hardy tree<br />

(ready to produce fruit soon) grows upright with an open habit up to 30' in<br />

height with a 20-30' spread. It is very ornamental <strong>and</strong> provides fair cover for<br />

wildlife <strong>and</strong> riparian plantings. This Crabapple produces pink buds that open<br />

to fragrant, white flowers with bright red to purple fruits that ripen in August.<br />

Apples are about the size of small plums <strong>and</strong> are excellent for jelly <strong>and</strong> spicy<br />

butters as well as good eating for humans, birds <strong>and</strong> wildlife. [5-9]<br />
