Maine Audubon Recommends Native and Wildlife-friendly! Fruit Trees All fruit trees are “semi-dwarf” unless noted. Plant 2 or 3 different varieties for cross-pollination unless self pollinating. Plant 15'-20' apart. Apples Apple trees provide fruit and beauty and usually produce heavily every other year. After enjoying gorgeous flowers, one can begin looking forward to the fruit apple trees produce. Fresh fruit is simply better and tastier than bin stored apples that are sold in supermarkets. There are many varieties of apple trees, all with taste, size, color, and harvest time variations. A pples do not freeze until the tem perature drops to 28.5°F in storage or outside. T he bud union (located where the scion m eets the rootstock) should not be buried in (keep it about 2 inches above) the ground when planting. 01K Cortland Apple: 4-6' ($24) A heavy annual cropper that bares large size red stripped fruit. Excellent for all uses. McIntosh and Ben Davis cross. Lowest acid content apples. [4] 02K H aralson Apple: 4-6' ($25) A hardy substitute for Golden Delicious developed especially for cold northern areas. Good baking, eating and cider apple. Flesh is crisp, juicy, firm. Mildly tart flavor, not acid. Holds its shape and texture in baking. Retains good flavor in keeping. [4]. 03K H oneycrisp Apple: 4-6' ($26) This apple is honey sweet with a hint of tart and exceptionally crisp! Spotted red over a yellow background with juicy, crisp cream-colored flesh. Excellent for fresh eating and salads, good for baking, & an excellent keeper. A mid season apple ripening from mid September to mid October. A cross of Macoun and Honeygold. [4]. 04K Liberty Apple: 4-6' ($26) A medium size, yellow-fleshed dessert apple. The tree is vigorous, spreading, and an annual bearer. Liberty is resistant to apple scab, cedar apple rust, fire blight, and mildew. A good choice for the home gardener. Liberty is an early blooming variety and can pollinate all other early & mid season blooming apple varieties. [4] 05K Northern Spy App le: 4-6' ($25)A very old-fashioned American heirloom winter apple variety, picked in late October and used through the winter months. Northern Spy is well known for its winter-hardiness. It is a naturally vigorous variety that may take longer than most apples to come into biennial bearing. [4] 06K W olf River Apple: 4-6' ($24) Wolf River apples are larger in size, up to 5 inches in diameter, than other common apple varieties. It is tart and juicy and is used more commonly for cooking pies, applesauce and apple butter than eating raw. Wolf River is an old variety of apple tree that is exceptionally cold hardy and ripens mid-September to mid-October. [4] 07K M acoun Apple: 4-6'' ($25) Produce very sweet, sugary, crisp apples that have a lovely aroma. They are perfect for both fresh eating and for baking. The flesh is pure white & holds in flavor well when cooked. hey are an offspring of the Liberty and is related to the McIntosh.[5] 08WO Dolgo Crabapple 4-5' branched ($28) This beautiful hardy tree (ready to produce fruit soon) grows upright with an open habit up to 30' in height with a 20-30' spread. It is very ornamental and provides fair cover for wildlife and riparian plantings. This Crabapple produces pink buds that open to fragrant, white flowers with bright red to purple fruits that ripen in August. Apples are about the size of small plums and are excellent for jelly and spicy butters as well as good eating for humans, birds and wildlife. [5-9] 2

[4] Raspberries Raspberries and Blackberries should not be planted within 75 to 100 feet of Black Raspberries. 10K B oyne R aspb erries: (6/$12.60) Early season variety that is extrem ely winter hardy. It consistently produces deep- red, m edium -sized berries that are easy to pick.. canes are upright and sturdy and will not need trellising to support the abundant fruit production. [3] Blueberries - Highbush $14 ea. 5 -one variety $60 1 - ea variety 4/$52 We will pot them for you: add $5/plant 11K Blueray Blueberries: The large dark-blue berries (60 berries/cup), with sweet, high-quality flavor, make Blueray an excellent choice for the home gardener. This is a mid-season, very hardy, upright vigorous bush that produces large, light- blue, highly tart fruit.. [3-7] 12K Jersey Blueberries: Many people who know their berries will tell you this old variety is the best. The berries are not as big as some of the others, but many think the taste is sweeter, and the well-shaped bush is certainly a more handsome shrub. Jersey is an outstanding variety for the home landscape and with its famous cold hardiness you will be harvesting for years. Grows 4-5' tall. [4-7] 13K Berkeley Blueberries: ‘Berkeley’ is a late mid-season blueberry and carries attractive powder blue fruit with a pleasing light flavor and good dessert quality. An excellent producer in mild climates. Bright yellow canes grow 5-6 ft wide and tall. Approx. 70 berries per cup. [4-8] 14N N elson Blueberries: This late-season variety is from the Michigan State breeding program. Grows to an average of 6 ft. A very good yielder which produces medium-blue, large sized, firm good flavored berries. [3] Edibles 15DeG Asparagus, Purple Passion: 4/$5; 6/$7 The special, attractive purple color, flavor and tenderness distinguish this variety from others. Has productive yields. For best performance, plant 6-8" apart in the row. When cooked, the bright purple color is reduced, but when served fresh in salads it provides a colorful and flavorful accent. Excellent flavor and freezing quality. [3-8] 3 Herbs & Medicinals 16RT Tansy, (T a n a c e t u m v u lg a re ): $4 potted. Grows 3-5'. Produces button-shaped yellow flowers in cluster in later sum m er. Best as a decorative h ardy border for gardens and is known to repel flying insects and ants. [2] 17RT Comfrey, (Sy s p h y t u m o ff ic in ale ) : $4 potted. W ell-known for its soothing p rop erties. Contains allantoin, promotes healing of skin and bone; also demulcent for lung and throat. Hanging bell-like pink flo w ers m uch loved by bum blebees open in early sum m er. Stem and leaves covered with bristly hairs. V igorous spreading plant that dem ands space; control with regular harvest. 3'-5' tall. [3] 18RT Spearmint, (M e n t h a s p ic ata) $3 potted. Classified as the crown jewel of the m int world. British breeds of green m int are known as spearm int. Very popular for flavoring cold soups, beverages and m eats. Likes m oist soil but grows alm ost anywhere. Fertilize annually in late summer. When harvesting,, the best leaves to use are the top bud an d first two leaves; pinch out the growing tip rather than cut a whole stem . M akes a nice tea tho ugh the fuzzy leaves are som ewhat m ore powdery than other m int varieties when dried. [2] 20RT Chives, O nino, (Alli u m s c h o e n o p r a s u m ) $3 p o tted Chives are an im portant culinary belonging to the esteem ed A lliaceae fam ily. They have delicate cylindrical, deep green leaves that have a passin g resem blance to long grass. [2] 21RT Catnip or catmint (Nepeta cataria)$4 potted Plants have fuzzy, grayish-green leaves and sm all, white flowers that b lo o m in the sum m er. The flowers, leaves and stem are cut while the plants are in full flower and then dried for use in herbal prep arations. Taken as a hot infusion, Catnip prom otes sweating and is beneficial for colds, flus, and fevers. It is so o thing to the nervous system and calm ing to the stom ach. It aids w ith flatulence, diarrhea, and colic. Com m only used in connection with anxiety, insom nia, and n ervousness. Contains a substance (nepetalactone) which has a sedative effect in hum ans. [2] 22DeG Serviceberry (Juneberry): 12-18", ($3.50) G rows 25 - 30 ft. One o f th e n ative trees to bloom trees to bloom in early spring.
