Fruit Trees<br />
All fruit trees are “semi-dwarf” unless noted.<br />
<strong>Plant</strong> 2 or 3 different varieties for cross-pollination unless self pollinating. <strong>Plant</strong> 15'-20' apart.<br />
Apples<br />
Apple trees provide fruit <strong>and</strong> beauty <strong>and</strong> usually produce heavily every other year.<br />
After enjoying gorgeous flowers, one can begin looking forward to the fruit apple trees produce. Fresh fruit is simply better <strong>and</strong> tastier<br />
than bin stored apples that are sold in supermarkets. There are many varieties of apple trees, all with taste, size, color, <strong>and</strong> harvest time<br />
variations. A pples do not freeze until the tem perature drops to 28.5°F in storage or outside. T he bud union (located where the<br />
scion m eets the rootstock) should not be buried in (keep it about 2 inches above) the ground when planting.<br />
01K Cortl<strong>and</strong> Apple: 4-6' ($24) A heavy annual<br />
cropper that bares large size red stripped fruit. Excellent<br />
for all uses. McIntosh <strong>and</strong> Ben Davis cross. Lowest acid<br />
content apples. [4]<br />
02K H aralson Apple: 4-6' ($25) A hardy substitute<br />
for Golden Delicious developed especially for cold<br />
northern areas. Good baking, eating <strong>and</strong> cider apple.<br />
Flesh is crisp, juicy, firm. Mildly tart flavor, not acid.<br />
Holds its shape <strong>and</strong> texture in baking. Retains good<br />
flavor in keeping. [4].<br />
03K H oneycrisp Apple: 4-6' ($26) This apple is<br />
honey sweet with a hint of tart <strong>and</strong> exceptionally crisp!<br />
Spotted red over a yellow background with juicy, crisp<br />
cream-colored flesh. Excellent for fresh eating <strong>and</strong><br />
salads, good for baking, & an excellent keeper. A mid<br />
season apple ripening from mid September to mid<br />
October. A cross of Macoun <strong>and</strong> Honeygold. [4].<br />
04K Liberty Apple: 4-6' ($26) A medium size,<br />
yellow-fleshed dessert apple. The tree is vigorous,<br />
spreading, <strong>and</strong> an annual bearer. Liberty is resistant to<br />
apple scab, cedar apple rust, fire blight, <strong>and</strong> mildew. A<br />
good choice for the home gardener. Liberty is an early<br />
blooming variety <strong>and</strong> can pollinate all other early & mid<br />
season blooming apple varieties. [4]<br />
05K Northern Spy App le: 4-6' ($25)A very<br />
old-fashioned American heirloom winter apple variety,<br />
picked in late October <strong>and</strong> used through the winter<br />
months. Northern Spy is well known for its<br />
winter-hardiness. It is a naturally vigorous variety that<br />
may take longer than most apples to come into biennial<br />
bearing. [4]<br />
06K W olf River Apple: 4-6' ($24) Wolf River<br />
apples are larger in size, up to 5 inches in diameter, than<br />
other common apple varieties. It is tart <strong>and</strong> juicy <strong>and</strong> is<br />
used more commonly for cooking pies, applesauce <strong>and</strong><br />
apple butter than eating raw. Wolf River is an old variety<br />
of apple tree that is exceptionally cold hardy <strong>and</strong> ripens<br />
mid-September to mid-October. [4]<br />
07K M acoun Apple: 4-6'' ($25) Produce very sweet,<br />
sugary, crisp apples that have a lovely aroma. They are<br />
perfect for both fresh eating <strong>and</strong> for baking. The flesh<br />
is pure white & holds in flavor well when cooked. hey<br />
are an offspring of the Liberty <strong>and</strong> is related to the<br />
McIntosh.[5]<br />
08WO Dolgo Crabapple 4-5' branched ($28) This beautiful hardy tree<br />
(ready to produce fruit soon) grows upright with an open habit up to 30' in<br />
height with a 20-30' spread. It is very ornamental <strong>and</strong> provides fair cover for<br />
wildlife <strong>and</strong> riparian plantings. This Crabapple produces pink buds that open<br />
to fragrant, white flowers with bright red to purple fruits that ripen in August.<br />
Apples are about the size of small plums <strong>and</strong> are excellent for jelly <strong>and</strong> spicy<br />
butters as well as good eating for humans, birds <strong>and</strong> wildlife. [5-9]<br />

freestone peach available. Medium sized, roundish, yellow<br />
fleshed peach that ripens mid August. [4]<br />
Raspberries<br />
Raspberries <strong>and</strong> Blackberries should not be planted<br />
within 75 to 100 feet of Black Raspberries.<br />
10K B oyne R aspb erries: (6/$12.60) Early season variety that<br />
is extrem ely winter hardy. It consistently produces deep- red, m<br />
edium -sized berries that are easy to pick.. canes are upright <strong>and</strong><br />
sturdy <strong>and</strong> will not need trellising to support the abundant fruit<br />
production. [3]<br />
Blueberries - Highbush<br />

11K Blueray Blueberries: The large dark-blue<br />
berries (60 berries/cup), with sweet, high-quality flavor,<br />
make Blueray an excellent choice for the home gardener.<br />
This is a mid-season, very hardy, upright vigorous bush<br />
that produces large, light- blue, highly tart fruit.. [3-7]<br />
12K Jersey Blueberries: Many people who know<br />
their berries will tell you this old variety is the best. The<br />
berries are not as big as some of the others, but many<br />
think the taste is sweeter, <strong>and</strong> the well-shaped bush is<br />
certainly a more h<strong>and</strong>some shrub. Jersey is an<br />
outst<strong>and</strong>ing variety for the home l<strong>and</strong>scape <strong>and</strong> with its<br />
famous cold hardiness you will be harvesting for years.<br />
Grows 4-5' tall. [4-7]<br />
13K Berkeley Blueberries: ‘Berkeley’ is a late<br />
mid-season blueberry <strong>and</strong> carries attractive powder blue<br />
fruit with a pleasing light flavor <strong>and</strong> good dessert<br />
quality. An excellent producer in mild climates. Bright<br />
yellow canes grow 5-6 ft wide <strong>and</strong> tall. Approx. 70<br />
berries per cup. [4-8]<br />
14N N elson Blueberries: This late-season variety<br />
is from the Michigan State breeding program. Grows to<br />
an average of 6 ft. A very good yielder which produces<br />
medium-blue, large sized, firm good flavored berries. [3]<br />
Edibles<br />
15DeG Asparagus, Purple Passion: 4/$5; 6/$7<br />
The special, attractive purple color, flavor <strong>and</strong><br />
tenderness distinguish this variety from others. Has<br />
productive yields. For best performance, plant 6-8"<br />
apart in the row. When cooked, the bright purple color<br />
is reduced, but when served fresh in salads it provides<br />
a colorful <strong>and</strong> flavorful accent. Excellent flavor <strong>and</strong><br />
freezing quality. [3-8]<br />

Herbs & Medicinals<br />
16RT Tansy, (T a n a c e t u m v u lg a re ): $4 potted. Grows<br />
3-5'. Produces button-shaped yellow flowers in cluster in later<br />
sum m er. Best as a decorative h ardy border for gardens <strong>and</strong> is<br />
known to repel flying insects <strong>and</strong> ants. [2]<br />
17RT Comfrey, (Sy s p h y t u m o ff ic in ale ) : $4 potted.<br />
W ell-known for its soothing p rop erties. Contains allantoin,<br />
promotes healing of skin <strong>and</strong> bone; also demulcent for lung<br />
<strong>and</strong> throat. Hanging bell-like pink flo w ers m uch loved by<br />
bum blebees open in early sum m er. Stem <strong>and</strong> leaves covered<br />
with bristly hairs. V igorous spreading plant that dem <strong>and</strong>s<br />
space; control with regular harvest. 3'-5' tall. [3]<br />
18RT Spearmint, (M e n t h a s p ic ata) $3 potted.<br />
Classified as the crown jewel of the m int world. British<br />
breeds of green m int are known as spearm int. Very popular<br />
for flavoring cold soups, beverages <strong>and</strong> m eats. Likes m oist<br />
soil but grows alm ost anywhere. Fertilize annually in late<br />
summer. When harvesting,, the best leaves to use are the top<br />
bud an d first two leaves; pinch out the growing tip rather<br />
than cut a whole stem . [2]<br />
19RT W ooly Apple M int, ( M e n th a suav eo le ns)<br />
$3 potted Perennial with vigorous growth hab it, reaches 1-2'<br />
A lso called “Round Leaf Mint.” Has wooly foliage <strong>and</strong> a<br />
fruity arom a. M akes a nice tea tho ugh the fuzzy leaves are<br />
som ewhat m ore powdery than other m int varieties when<br />
dried. [2]<br />
20RT Chives, O nino, (Alli u m s c h o e n o p r a s u m )<br />
$3 p o tted Chives are an im portant culinary belonging to the<br />
esteem ed A lliaceae fam ily. They have delicate cylindrical,<br />
deep green leaves that have a passin g resem blance to long<br />
grass. [2]<br />
21RT Catnip or catmint (Nepeta cataria)$4 potted<br />
<strong>Plant</strong>s have fuzzy, grayish-green leaves <strong>and</strong> sm all, white<br />
flowers that b lo o m in the sum m er. The flowers, leaves <strong>and</strong><br />
stem are cut while the plants are in full flower <strong>and</strong> then dried<br />
for use in herbal prep arations. Taken as a hot infusion,<br />
Catnip prom otes sweating <strong>and</strong> is beneficial for colds, flus,<br />
<strong>and</strong> fevers. It is so o thing to the nervous system <strong>and</strong> calm ing<br />
to the stom ach. It aids w ith flatulence, diarrhea, <strong>and</strong> colic.<br />
Com m only used in connection with anxiety, insom nia, <strong>and</strong><br />
n ervousness. Contains a substance (nepetalactone) which has<br />
a sedative effect in hum ans. [2]<br />
22DeG Serviceberry (Juneberry): 12-18", ($3.50)<br />
G rows 25 - 30 ft. One o f th e n ative trees to bloom trees to<br />
bloom in early spring. Co vered with billowy m asses of sm all<br />
white flowers in racem es. Berry-like fruits attract birds <strong>and</strong> are<br />
purplish black. Fall color is yellow to red. [3] {S,W }
Perennial<br />
23DeG Yucca filamentosa 'Adam's Needle' $5,<br />
2/$9 (2" pots) A tropical looking plant with sword-like,<br />
succulent foliage surrounding clusters of bell-shaped flowers<br />
on tall spikes. A dam 's needle looks a little like a sm all palm ,<br />
but is actually m ore clo sely related to the lilies. The evergreen<br />
leaves o f A dam 's needle are straplike, about 1 in (2.5 cm )<br />
wide <strong>and</strong> up to 2-3 ft (0.6-0.9 m ) long. The individual flowers<br />
are very showy on an erect spike up to 12' high (sho rter in<br />
cold areas). G rows best in well-drained, s<strong>and</strong>y loam . [4-8]<br />
24DF P urple Coneflow er Echinacea purpurea):<br />
($8 potted) {20} The big conical centers o f these daisyshaped<br />
flowers are very spiny <strong>and</strong> co p p ery yellow-brown with<br />
lavender-purple petals on 2 -4' stem s. They last fo rever when<br />
cut. Sub-zero hardy but withstan d h eat <strong>and</strong> dry locations.<br />
Tolerates wind <strong>and</strong> drought once estab lished. They draw<br />
pollinators like b utterflies <strong>and</strong> bum blebees, sm ell sweet <strong>and</strong><br />
the chickadees like the seeds. Makes an anti-inflam m atory<br />
treatm ent for infected wounds <strong>and</strong> the bites of reptiles <strong>and</strong><br />
insects. G rows 20-30" high, m ultiplies easily. {B}[3]<br />
25MC Bleeding H eart-Old-Fashioned, Dicentra<br />
spectabilis $8 potted G rows 30 - 36" . O ld-fashioned<br />
Bleeding H earts form large, bushy clum ps of powdery-green<br />
foliage com prised of cut or lobed leaves on fleshy stem s. [3]<br />
26MC F alse Sunflow er, H eliopsis $8 potted To 36".<br />
A beautiful carefree perennial that puts on a show of sem i-<br />
double, 2-3 inch wide, golden yellow flowers all sum m er long.<br />
A n excellent tall perennial for the back of the flower border.<br />
G rows in full sun or part shade, but it perform s m uch better<br />
in full sun. D eadheading spent flower heads will extend the<br />
flowering tim e. [3]<br />
27MC P ainted Daisy, Tanacetum $8 potted Grows<br />
24-36". M easure 2.5 inches wide <strong>and</strong> are daisy-like with a<br />
bright yellow center. Tanacetum also has interesting ferny<br />
foliage m uch like that of yarrow. G row in full sun <strong>and</strong> welldrained<br />
soil. It should be divided in the spring or in the fall<br />
every 2 years to m aintain vigor. [3]<br />
28MC Spiderwort, Tradescantia $8 potted Grows<br />
18 - 24" Triangular, pale pink flowers <strong>and</strong> slender, frosted<br />
blue-green foliage. Each 1-2 inch wide, 3-petaled flower<br />
only lasts for one day, but the plants have lots of buds,<br />
extending the bloom tim e up to eight w eeks. This longblooming<br />
selection is excellent for naturalizing in<br />
wildflower gardens.. Very attractive when planted in a<br />
naturalized area or by a pond or stream. [3]<br />
29MC P rimrose, P rimula capitata Salvana<br />
$8 potted. Spring bloom er produces unique button-like<br />
flowers atop powdery silver stem s. The pinkish violet-blue,<br />
trum pet-shaped flowers are held in pin cushion-like clusters.<br />
<strong>Plant</strong> in partial shade. <strong>Plant</strong>s will go dorm ant in hot, dry<br />
sum m er weather unless they are kept well-watered. [4]<br />
30MC Bee Balm , M onarda 'Raspberry W ine'<br />
$8 potted. G rows to 30-42". W in e red flowers appear atop<br />
th e sto cky, square stem s from m idsum m er to fall. Full sun is<br />
best, but light shade is tolerated. In order to keep p lants<br />
healthy <strong>and</strong> vigorous, they should be divided at least every<br />
three years in the spring. To prevent fungus from appearing,<br />
large clum ps should be thinned out so that the air c i r c u l a t e s<br />
freely around them . T h e flo wers' sweet nectar attracts scores<br />
of hum m ingb irds, butterflies, <strong>and</strong> bees to the garden. The<br />
arom atic foliage sm ells like m int.<br />
31MC Astilbe chinensis 'Valerie' Soft ({10} $8<br />
potted) G rows 18-20". Bluish-purple p lum es are dense <strong>and</strong><br />
blocky. H eavy bloom er that blossom s in m idsum m er. L arge,<br />
bright green leaves are coarse in texture. Astilbes are longlived<br />
p erennials that are m ost com fortable when grown in<br />
rich soil <strong>and</strong> light shade to filtered sun. T h ey will grow in full<br />
shade, but will not bloom as prolifically th ere. Though they<br />
are easy to grow, Astilbes have one critical requirement-<br />
-lots of water. [4]<br />
Conifers<br />
W e will find you the best buys on evergreens (conifers).<br />
Call to order 50 or m ore of any variety .<br />
Flowering Bushes<br />
32DeG Blue Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis): 12-18" $5<br />
each. Wisteria is probably one of the best-loved<br />
climbing plants. grows vigorously to 30' <strong>and</strong> features<br />
6-12" long racemes of mildly-fragrant blue-violet<br />
flowers. Although vines may produce flowers by the<br />
second or third year after planting, it may take much<br />
longer. Full sun for best flowering. [5-8]<br />
33RT F orsythia: $12 potted, $6 bare root. Ready to<br />
bloom . Very fast upright growth to 7'. <strong>Plant</strong> 3-4' apart for<br />
hedge. D eep golden yellow flowers in early spring,. Easily<br />
pruned after bloom to maintain desired height. The<br />
forsythia bush grows best on a site that has full sun or light<br />
shade. Forsythia bushes are an ideal plant for borders or<br />

beautiful dark red flower color in June-August.<br />
This plant<br />
grows upright <strong>and</strong> has an arch ing effect. Has a tendency for a<br />
secondary bloom in late sum m er. [4,5,6] {W }<br />
35K W eigela, V ariegated (2-3'; $14) Grows 3-4'.<br />
Charm ing pink trumpet shaped flowers sm other these 4-5 ft.<br />
plants in June. Bloom s continue all sum m er long, enh an ced<br />
by the distinctive green <strong>and</strong> white foliage. Extrem ely hardy<br />
plants thrive under any conditions, have a natural dense habit<br />
<strong>and</strong> respond well to light pruning. Som etim es blossom s again<br />
in fall. [4]<br />
36K W eigela, W ine & Roses (12-18"; $13) G rows 3-<br />
4'. D eep green leaves tinged reddish purple. Carm ine red<br />
buds opening to deep pink bloom s. Excellent low m ounding<br />
shrub. Flowers are attractive to hum m ing birds. [4]<br />
*I have found that with our change in weather, many of<br />
my W eigela re-blossom in late August/September.<br />

Lilacs {B,D ,H,S}<br />
Later Lilac (2-3; $10) 6-9' h X 4-9' w<br />
Lilac-type clusters of flowers in very late sprin g (after<br />
com m on lilac). Full sun; m oist, well-drained soils are best;<br />
tolerates alkaline soils. Has fragrant rosy lilac to white<br />
flowers in 3- to 6-inch clusters. [2]<br />
38L P eking L ilac (3-4'; $10) A sm all tree lilac<br />
th at m ay grow to 20'. Flow ers cream y-white, densely cro w ded<br />
in large panicles. G olden bark, so m etim es exfoliating in rich<br />
brown flakes. [3]<br />
39RT O ld F ashion purple Lilac potted $8. Grows<br />
12 - 20'. Syringa Vulgaris, is well-known <strong>and</strong> loved by<br />
gardeners all over the world for its beauty <strong>and</strong> fragrance; one<br />
of the m ost powerful fragrances em itted by a plant.<br />
