Looking back at the past year and the City’s accomplishments, there was a lot to celebrate at the recent “State of the City 2009.” During the event, the City Commission and City Manager Michael S. Levinson recognized the dedication and hard work of the many committees and volunteers who contribute thousands of hours to, and save thousands of dollars for, the City each year. This year’s theme of “Live, Work, Play, Learn” highlighted important initiatives from the past fiscal year within these four main categories, showcasing our community’s numerous assets and illustrating why the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. City staff also interviewed residents and heard why Coral Springs was a great place for their families and businesses. Michael Singer, a teacher at Coral Springs Charter School, said he chose to live in Coral Springs based on considerable research. “The cost of homes, the resale value of homes, the neighborhoods, the parks, the schools, the shopping, the culture. In a comparison of several communities throughout the United States, Coral Springs rated at the top of our own personal matrix,” Singer said. Ron Daratany, who owns a career planning practice in State of the City 2009 live work play learn live play the City, said he opened his business here because it’s a very business-friendly community. “The City is very much in the community, and because I’m involved with the City, I understand what City officials are doing for businesses and I’ve been impressed with all of it,” he said. Coral Springs is also a great place to play. With 49 parks and numerous activities, there is something for everyone to enjoy. “I would tell other teenagers that there are a ton of things to do here. I’ve been in the soccer league for over 10 years and I love it, and there are also volunteer activities that are a lot of fun,” student Sangitha Palaniappa said. Chelsea Stahl, who lives and works in Coral Springs, is also furthering her education here. She is taking advantage of the Coral Springs College and University Partnership and will soon have her master’s degree. “I love work learn the fact that I work nearby, that we have her school nearby, and even now, I get to go to college nearby. I’ll have a master’s degree in less than two years and not have to drive more than a few minutes for every class that I go to,” she said.
