Asia-Pacific Biosafety Association
Founded in 2005
• Is a not-for-profit professional association
• for the promotion of biosafety and biosecurity
• aim to provide a forum for its members the exchange of biosafety
and biosecurity information and knowledge.
• facilitate the development and implementation of biosafety &
biosecurity courses and workshops that are tailored to the needs of
the region.
• to encourage and assist in the establishment of national biosafety
associations to promote good practices at the national and local level
• to provide a regional network for collaboration in training and all
activities that promotes biosafety & biosecurity

Biosafety & Biosecurity Challenges
in Asia Pacific Region
• The issues of biosafety & biosecurity has evolved to
different positions for different countries and region
• In developed countries, the issues of biosafety &
biosecurity has evolved to issues that question the
need for regulation and controls of scientific activities
and research that may open an avenue for the
potential abuse and misused of biological agents that
are infectious.
• The Oversight of Science is an example that reflect
this need to provide a framework that ensure a certain
degree of biosecurity measures without adversely
affecting the progress of science.

Biosafety & Biosecurity Challenges
in Asia Pacific Region
• In many developing countries, the focus could still
be on the fundamentals of biosafety as many of the
facilities handling infectious agents were built more
than 10 or 20 years ago with little or limited provision
for biosafety and biosecurity measures in their design
and practices.
- This can pose as the weakest link in that chain of
control in biosecurity against the misuse of
biological agents to inflict harm.

Biosafety & Biosecurity Challenges
in Asia Pacific Region
• To implement a systematic programme for biosafety &
biosecurity that is effective and sustainable , a certain
infrastructure at the regional level has to be in place to
support and implement those programme,
• A step forward is to identify or establish such partners or
channels that can assist in the implementation of these
programmes

Activities
• Support a Global (International ) Biosafety &
Biosecurity Framework
• Encourage the development of National Biosafety
& Biosecurity Framework
• Encourage the formation of National Biosafety
Association / Biosafety Work Groups
• To provide a common platform for training,
networking
and promotion of Biosafety & Biosecurity
