The Headmaster’s Speech on Open Day
Friday 2nd July 2010
Mr Mayor and Mrs Coles, Mrs Derbyshire and Governors,
Parents, Staff and Children. We also welcome today
Mrs Champion as our Guest of Honour. As you can see
she is looking well, relaxed and tanned a year on from
retirement.
Although today we report on the past year, forgive me
if I will also be thinking of the past 40 years or so. For
the few of you out there who have reached my age I am
sure you also wonder how the past 40 years passed so
quickly. Time is a strange commodity, it hardly seems
like yesterday when I was at school but it also seems an
absolute age ago. I expect the leavers today feel the same
way about their time at Millfield Prep.
My career has encompassed a range of employment
including three headships. It has been a fascinating
career with much variety. I have been lucky but, as they
say, you do make your own luck.
I am proud of what we have been able to achieve this
year and over the past 10 years, not alone but as a team.
I will remember with some satisfaction the physical
changes we have made at this site such as the pre-prep,
the equestrian centre and the sports hall, to name a few.
I would have liked to have completed the lake project
but the recession put paid to that. However, I do have
some good news. We have a company interested in doing
the project at no cost to us. It would be great for this to
commence and for me to leave you with it started as part
of my legacy.
All these physical changes are important but they pale
into insignificance against the development of each of our
children as successful, happy, fulfilled, enthusiastic and
confident, well prepared for the future. We may not have
succeeded in all cases but this is what we have aimed to
do to fulfil our mission.
My thanks to those staff who are also retiring or leaving
to take up new posts. My thanks especially go today to
Mr Bruno Reina, the Head of Modern Languages, who
moves on to take up a Deputy Headship in London.
He has spent 10 years with us as teacher, HOD and
Academic Co-ordinator. We wish him well in his future
career.
Mrs Papworth also retires after 22 years in the school,
firstly as teacher and then as Head of Geography. Mrs
Papworth has been a very dedicated Geography teacher
and she has fully supported the school in her time here.
She has been the driving force of our Green Team and it
is because of her dedication to the sustainability that we
received our Green Flag Award on three occasions.
Mrs Barlow retires after 25 years teaching in the Pre-
Prep. She was one of the founding staff of the Pre-Prep
when it was located in Glastonbury. She has been a key
teacher in the Pre-Prep and has been a great practitioner
and member of staff in her long career with us.
Thank you to all our staff leavers and retirees.
The staff and children have given me an exceptional
final year. You will be hearing from Mr Close of all their
achievements. The children have had a huge amount
of success in the school’s academic, artistic, musical
and dramatic life as well as an amazing year of sporting
excellence. And what an incredible year of sporting
success, certainly the best
in my 10 years here. We
are National Champions in
Rugby, Swimming, Hockey,
Golf, Trampolining, Fencing, Cross Country, Cricket
and Rounders. Our Soccer players managed to get the
furthest any prep school has in the ISFA Championship
and we had an unbeaten 1st XI Cricket for the first time
anyone can remember. Whilst we applaud this success,
we are also pleased to be able to run so many A, B & C
team fixtures, even up to a 6th XI at Cricket, so as many
children as possible can take part in competitive team
sport.
As you already know, we also achieved the accolade of
Outstanding reports from Ofsted and the Independent
School Inspectorate. These achievements do not just
happen by good luck; it requires talented pupils and
talented, committed, hard working and supportive staff
whom I would like to thank wholeheartedly on your
behalf. Thank you.
It has been team work and I hope staff will say of me
“But a good leader when his hard work is done, his aim
fulfilled, the people will all say we did this ourselves”.
There have been many changes since I was appointed
to my first Headship but fortunately children are still
children. They still want to live and work in a secure,
stable environment, they still thrive on praise, they still
need to be loved and nurtured, they still need to be given
time and support, they still need to be children rather
than the young adults the world tries to make them. The
beauty of schools such as this is that this childhood can
last longer – they will have plenty of time to be adults
and to be exposed to the wider world.
I returned to Millfield in 2001 because it is in my
educational DNA. I tried to add to the schools I ran
the philosophy of Millfield so it was natural to return.
So thank you Mr White, the former Chairman of the
Governors, whom I am very pleased has joined us today
and to the Governors for giving me the privilege to run
the school.
I do not know exactly what each of you wants from the
education of your child. However, I am clear in my
mind, what a school ought to provide.
I am a passionate believer in an all-round, holistic
approach. I believe an education should try to develop
the whole child. What use is a narrow academic
education without any thought of the personality of the
child? We all have multi-intelligence and surely as a
school should try to develop as many aspects as possible.
We know a happy child will learn better, so surely we
should be doing things which allow that child to be happy
and fulfilled. This was the Jack Meyer philosophy, to
provide a wide range of opportunities so each child does
something they enjoy and are good at, so will perform
better in all areas of school life.
There may be a place for some to be in a narrowly
selective, academic school but early selection does
not allow for the different times when each individual
develops. In my experience there are so many children
who focus, sometimes quite late, on academic life that to
condemn them at an early age is to lose, to our society, a
huge pool of talent.
2

To maintain a love of school, of education in its broadest
sense, is our aim, and to develop each child’s potential to
the highest level possible
I hope the new coalition Government will remember
Disraeli’s words back in 1874 in the House of Commons
when he said “Upon the education of the people of this
country the fate of the country depends”.
Education should not be a political ping-pong ball with
change just to satisfy political correctness. A decent
education for our children is the only way to a better
future.
One of the appointments I made a few years ago was for
Mr Parsons to become the school archivist. This has now
resulted in all the archives being in order for the first
time in 60 years and for us to have a complete record, as
far as possible, of Old Edgarley and Millfield Prep pupils.
This should allow us to reconnect with former pupils and
is an important historical record for the school.
I have been very pleased to support the Old Millfieldian
Association by raising their profile around the world and
also starting new Millfield International Associations in
Greece, Turkey and Bermuda. To meet up with former
pupils and other OMs one has not seen for over 25 years
has been a great pleasure and I hope some of the pupils
here will take the trouble to let me know how they are
getting on in the future.
This year the Parents’ & Friends’ Association has
continued their support of the school and has helped to
raise over £30,000 for local and regional charities while
at the same time organising some very enjoyable events.
I am proud that in the time we have been here we must
have raised at least £150,000 for Charity: my thanks to
you all for this achievement and my thanks to all the
parents for your support to me and the school.
Today, the 2nd of July, would have been my father’s 96th
birthday was he to still to be alive. This year is also the
70th anniversary of Dunkirk. My father was a Dunkirk
veteran and he was also involved in the Normandy
Landings, so I suppose it is lucky I am here today and the
success of my career owes much to the foundation my
parents gave to me.
The career path I undertook has meant living in school
accommodation for the majority of the time. We have
therefore been under the spotlight as it were, day and
night. I am delighted three of my boys have been able to
join us today so I am able to thank them for coping with
being at their dad’s workplace all the time. They have
done this without complaint, despite the disruption that
it has caused them. Like any good father I am hugely
proud of them and look forward to seeing more of them
in our retirement.
Equally, nothing I have done or achieved would
have been possible without the advice, support and
involvement of my wife Hilary. Inevitably the role she
plays so well has not always been easy. She has taken a
full part in all we have done to the benefit of all. She will
be missed and will also miss you all. Thank you.
My thanks also to all our Governors for their support
over the years.
Our Chair of Governors, Mrs Judith Derbyshire, is
standing down and retiring as a Governor of Millfield
School. She has been great to work with and for. She
has coped with a period of considerable change and has
been instrumental in the appointment of three Heads and
one Bursar. She will be missed by the school but she is
able to stand down knowing that she has left Millfield in a
strong position to face the future. Thank you.
Today we say goodbye to our Year 8 leavers and some
other leavers from the school. No doubt, like me, there
will be a degree of excitement of all the new things that
are going to happen. No doubt there will be a tinge of
sadness, of leaving behind something that has for so long
been part of their lives. This is the same for me and I
suspect the other staff leavers.
I hope we have given your children the foundation and
abilities to make the most of their lives and their careers.
I hope I have provided the school with the stability and
continuity it has needed over the past 10 years to face
the present uncertain economic future with confidence in
its ability to do the best for your children and to succeed
with them. I trust the leadership I have shown has
moved the school in the right direction - a gentle and fair
hand on the tiller but in the right direction always.
The most one can do in life is to do your best; I have
always tried to do so. The words of Thomas Stanley,
who said this in the 17th century resonates with me
today. “To leave the world a little bit better, whether
by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed
social condition. To know that even one life has
breathed easier because you have lived – this is to have
succeeded”. I hope all our leavers will try to make this
world a better place.
My thanks again to colleagues and friends who have
supported us through the years. I wish all at Millfield
well for the future. I am sure with the Considines and
the Shaylers the schools are in good hands and will have
a bright future as one of the best all-round schools in the
world.
EDITORIAL
Another year, another yearbook! I realise that this is the
tenth MPS Yearbook that I have put together - the first one
being in 2000/2001, the year that Mr Cheney arrived. I had
been editing the termly magazines for a number of years
but Mr Cheney wanted to create an annual record that
would provide happy memories of school days. This issue
celebrates Mr Cheney’s time at MPS and, as I look back over
the yearbooks, I realise just how much has been achieved at
MPS during those years.
As Editor, I would like to thank Mr Chris Twort for his help
with the sports pages and for his tireless proof reading and
John, at St Andrews Press, for always managing to squeeze
in yet more photographs and more text!
MPS never rests and there is no space to record everything,
or even half of it! Please accept my apologies for those
omissions. Enjoy!
School Council
The first meeting of the new School
Council was held in early October. Our
eight enthusiastic Year Representatives
- Conrad Lewis, Saul Landrock, Arseny
Zadorozhny, Beth Stowell, Emily Bayliss,
George Caruth, Millie Regan and Isabelle
Barber - impressed the staff with their ideas
and confidence. Throughout the school
year the council met to discuss a range of
issues with the Headmaster, Mr Close and
Mrs Bruce. Topics under discussion have
included food, playgrounds, water fountains
and school facilities in general. The Council
provides an excellent channel for the pupils
to communicate their thoughts about
school life and all matters are given serious
consideration. One of the new initiatives this
year has been the creation of a fitness trail
around the grounds. Minutes of the meetings
are published on the School Intranet and also
on the School Council notice board.

Mrs J Bruce
Confirmation at Wells Cathedral
Eighteen pupils from MPS were confirmed on Saturday 24th
April at Wells Cathedral by the Bishop of Bath and Wells, the
Right Reverend Peter Price. In a wonderful service, in the
most fitting of locations, the Bishop challenged the candidates
to stand up for their faith and to live out their faith in the
world today. Over 500 family members and guests enjoyed
this truly special event. Mr Considine, the Senior School
Headmaster, presented all the newly confirmed pupils with
their certificates at the celebratory tea at Millfield.
Englishtype Junior –
Year 7 Touch Typing Course
The Year 7 touch typing course was undertaken in the Winter
Term. Mrs Westwood and her team, who come to MPS to run the
intensive course, were delighted that the pupils concentrated so
well, came early to lessons and stayed on to finish what they were
doing when the bell rang. They reported hearing comments such
as, “This is such fun!”– very encouraging when the children are
learning such an important life skill! The new “Speed Booster”
exercises, which are very quick to do, were a great success with
many of the children.
The course produced star performers as usual. Roo Whelan (7LS)
was the outstanding Accuracy Champion on the lessons, where
he achieved 99% accuracy! Dominic Grunwell (7JB) achieved a
first in that he had never tried typing by touch before, but on the
last day did some copy typing at 71 words a minute with very high
accuracy. Very well done, Dominic!
We had a record number of GOLD certificates (30 wpm at above
90% Accuracy) – 10 in all - from Harry Close, Tim Owen, Laura
Winlow, Josh Barton, Dominic Grunwell, Ruby Beeden, Erin
Connelly, Jamil Roberts,
Miles Shepherd and Thomas
Gabb. Some of the SILVER
(20 wpm) successes could
easily have become Gold;
we had 17 altogether. And
another 30 pupils who did
10 or more words a minute,
making in all more than half
the group who have made a
great start in learning this
important skill.
HEADS OF BOARDING HOUSES
There were some notable
achievements from
MPS players this year.
Nikita Ayvazyan and
Adam Dickinson joined
their Senior School
counterparts in representing Millfield in the
National Schools’ Championships. They helped
us to finish as runners-up in this U18 event.
Adam went on to represent Somerset, but Nikita
went one better, representing his country, Russia,
at the World Youth Championships in Turkey.
Bethan Plant, Oscar Plant, Henry Smeed and
Adam Dickinson all qualified for the National
Finals of the UK Chess Challenge, Adam reaching
the last two hundred of an event which starts
with over 80,000 (yes, that’s right, 80,000)
players.
Millfield again hosted a Grand Prix event for the
Somerset Primary Schools’ Chess Association
where we were able to raise over £300 to support
Musical Highlights
MPS YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR
On Friday 26th March, our top musicians were in stiff competition for this
year’s titles. At the end of a superb programme of instrumental pieces and
singing, no-one in the audience envied the adjudicator, Mr Hywel Jenkins, in
his task of selecting winners. But, a decision had to be made and Alex Smith,
who played the marimba, won the instrumental title and Ella Grob, who sang
Bernstein’s ‘Peter, Peter’, won the vocal class.
All the competitors deserve a mention for their outstanding performances –
THE ROCK & POP CONCERT
The finalists of the MPS Young Musician of the
Year
This year’s Rock and Pop Concert on Friday 5th March comprised an evening of Beatles music. Many
of the parents in the audience knew the songs from the first time around! The children’s performances
were polished and accomplished, ranging from solo ballads to group numbers. Everyone (audience
included) enjoyed finishing off the evening with a rousing ‘Hey Jude’. The children were backed by the
Moondogs. Thanks to Mr Kench and Mr Boyle for organising a really super evening.
HOUSE SINGING COMPETITION
The House Singing Competition at the end of the
Spring Term is always eagerly anticipated. Weeks
of preparation go into this event with rehearsals
crammed into lunchtimes and any spare moments.
The four houses (and the Music Department staff)
vie keenly with each other and the added bonus that
the Easter holiday awaits injects further enthusiasm!
The competition comprises two parts – a
chamber choir performance and a ‘whole house’
song. This year’s overall winners were Danes with
‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’, while Jutes were
voted the best Chamber Choir. Mr Mark Williams
adjudicated and is shown here presenting the Heads
of Danes, Conrad Lewis and Libby Letchford, with
their award and Alexander Vaughan and Melanie
Pocock with the Jutes award.
The MPS Chamber Choir joined forces with the Millfield
Chorus to sing Rutter’s Mass of the Children, in Wells
Cathedral on Tuesday 9th March.
Our Junior Choir, Chamber Choir and some soloists
played in a Concert at St John’s Church Glastonbury
and helped raise much needed funds for the church.
PIANO RECITAL
One of the highlights
of the Summer Term
was the Piano Recital
given by Year 8 pupil,
Anastasiya Shpitko.
Anastasiya’s talent has
been obvious since she
first joined MPS in Year
4, as a young boarder
at Berewall. We have
watched with interest
as her musical ability has developed. She richly
deserved the standing ovation she received at this
concert and we wish her every success in her musical
future.
SUMMER CONCERTS
In a break from our usual format, we split the summer concert over two
evenings. The first was for the smaller ensembles. Again, it was good to see so
many talented youngsters performing so well. It was nice for them to have their
own concert and not be overshadowed by the larger ensembles. The second
evening was given over to the larger ensembles and we were thrilled to be able
to perform Saint Saens’ Carnival of the
Animals. The choirs also joined forces
for one item which made a thrilling
beginning to the evening.
Collections at our concerts raised over
£2000 for Yeovil Coronary Care Unit,
which bought 4 televisions on stands plus
head phones. Thank you - this equipment
was very much appreciated.
The Year In Art
PERSIAN DAY
THURSDAY 4th MARCH 2010
MPS ARTISTS ON SHOW
During the Autumn Term, paintings by Year 8 pupils
Anna Vashurkina, Alexander Allen, Jennifer Vincent,
Jack Longrigg, Alex Wilson-Slomkowski and Raphael
Ayitey were displayed at West Mendip Hospital..
The paintings came about through looking at West
African pattern and design while in Year 7. The pupils
had been studying West African culture which included
workshops in dance, drumming, printmaking and food
technology.
In these paintings the pupils looked very closely
at geometric and repeat pattern and used imagery
and colour from West African textiles and ceramic
decoration to complete their compositions.
PERSIA DAY
This Year’s Curriculum
Focus Day in Year 7
was Persia. The pupils
had a fantastic day (as
did the staff and the
rest of the school!)
when they had a
chance to experience
a Persian feast for
lunch. We had various
workshops running
throughout the day
which included making a Persian ceramic rug,
learning to cook Persian delights, kite making, story
telling through puppetry and Persian classical music.
Pupils had a chance to learn many aspects of this rich
and varied culture.
An excellent group painting in the Fauves style by the pupils in 6AD
THE BARCELONA EXCHANGE TRIP
Accompanied by Mrs Henderson, Mr Maxwell and Mrs McElhinney, twelve
lucky MPS pupils (Tom Strawford, Josh Barton, Haiden Watts, Hannah Nanton,
Reuben Williams, Beth Stowell, Robbie Wills, Alex Pullin, Monica Clifford, Erin
Connelly, Jemima Howard-Higgins and Seb Munnik) visited Barcelona as part of
an Exchange with Oak House School from the city. The pupils had a very full
itinerary, visiting the marvellous food markets, the Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell
and the Picasso museum as well as taking part in a tapas making workshop with
Juan Ramon, the school chef at Oak House. The pupils stayed with their host families and had a real taste of city
living. Our Spanish friends visited us at MPS in the Summer Term and enjoyed
Food and Art
workshops and a
visit to Bath to see
the Roman Baths
and doing some
glass blowing with
Bath Aqua glass.
PICTURES OF THE WEEK
A ‘Picture of the Week’ is selected by the Art Department and announced in Assembly each Thursday.
This hotly-contested honour means that the pupils’ art work can be enjoyed by the whole school. The
‘Picture of the Week’ is initially displayed in the dining room and then moved to the entrance hall of the
main building where it can be enjoyed by visitors too. Here are just of the few from this year’s display…
English and Drama
DICK WHITTINGTON & those pesky ratz!
The Year 8 Christmas production was a pantomime with a difference! Told in flashback from
the year 2050, MPS took a new take on the old tale of Dick Whittington and tried to answer
the pertinent question of how a complete buffoon can end up being Mayor of London! Penned
by the Head of English and Drama, Jim Boyd, the play involved hitch-hiking rats, Bridgwater
adventurers, revolting children named Vomit and Puke, an unfunny court jester and a queen
obsessed with facials and liposuction.
Over fifty children trod the boards, arranged the songs and music and worked tirelessly
to produce something new. The first time the whole cast assembled was for the first
performance!
THE MAVERICK DEBATE
On Tuesday 2nd March, two houses both alike in dignity debated on the possibility of future
technology rendering human teachers obsolete.
Early on it was clear that, despite numerous references to bad jokes, lateness and unwashed
coffee cups, the Nays were in the majority. Amy Cooper and John Hall, speaking for
the motion, bravely stemmed the tide of opinion early but the opposition bench of Brett
Dickinson and Gil White stole the spoils. Indeed, it was the biggest winning margin, a clear
thirty votes, in the history of the MPS Maverick Debate.
As for the Maverick, the most engaging speakers from the floor – Anastasiya Shpitko, Brenda
Gonzales Martin and Flora McKaig – all impressed the adjudicator, Mrs Christine Martin, but
it was Saul Landrook who took the title of this year’s Maverick. Not only did Saul have a fine
speech, but he dealt with the numerous interruptions with skill. Well done to all those who
spoke and those who were willing, but were unable to do so due to time constraints.
Another Maverick triumph.
Saul Landrock, this year’s
Maverick winner.
MACBETH
As the summer term drew to a close, Year 6 pupils
‘stood up for Shakepeare’ and gave us a great
performance of Macbeth. A dramatic and atmospheric
set, created by Mr Ratcliffe and the Art Department,
provided the backdrop to this challenging play. Ben
Lawrence in the title role and Libby Brake as Lady
Macbeth, put in stunning
performances. The witches were suitably sinister and the young
Malcolm fittingly heroic. The play was directed by Mrs Lacy and Mrs
Webb who managed to involve the whole of Year 6 in cast and chorus.
Musical accompaniment from our multi-talented staff band provided
enjoyable relief from the unfolding tragedy. Well done to Year 6 for all
their hard work.
LIBRARY NEWS
Cathy Cassidy, popular for her range of ‘pink’ books
for girls, including titles such as Dizzy, Lucky Star
and Scarlett, visited the school in April. The children
enjoyed her talk which was followed by book signing
and a chance to chat in the library.
The annual Book Fair was a great success, raising over
£1500 in book commission, which was split between
the library, juniors, history, science, geography,
boarding houses, EAL and LDC.
The library monitors
had a well deserved
trip to Wells Cathedral
Library to thank them
for their hard work
and commitment to
the library over the
year. It was a lovely
morning and the tour
of the library showed
us some beautiful books and helped us understand the
development of the printed word. It was a glorious day
– we had a picnic on the Cathedral Green and rounded
off the day with a spot of football.
Ms V Hayes
STRANGE HAPPENINGS at
SPITTLEBURY MANOR
Once again Year
7 had to endure
some very ‘Strange
Happenings’ in
the form of their
annual dramatic
production. This
year, the events
took place at
Spittlebury Manor
during the festive
ball. Assembled
were dignified
guests, dedicated
staff and dishevelled
circus performers.
Horror of horrors
- the Spittlebury
Diamonds disappear
and on to the scene
arrives the detective
sisters, the Marbles
Twins. Everyone is a suspect and secrets and lies
are soon discovered as well as the diamonds. All
ends happily, love prevails, livelihoods are saved
and the circus continues to perform. A cast of
seventy speaking parts performed admirably in
the face of adversity as the first time the cast was
assembled in its entirety was on the first night and
even then a South African exchange student had to
step in! Once again the old adage –‘the show must
go on’ was fulfilled. It was a theatrical miracle!
PERFORMING ARTS CLUB
Last year saw the creation of the Year 8 MPS
Performing Arts Club and this year the short standing
tradition has continued!
Initially consisting of only eight members, by week 3
numbers were over twenty as word of mouth promotion
swelled the ranks. The concept was to give pupils an
idea of the enormous range of possibilities available
in the arts and especially the performing arts. All that
was required to be a member was a willingness to
work hard, overcome shyness, laugh at oneself and be
prepared to perform! Highlights of the term included a
performance in assembly of the comic mime to ‘Torn’
and the production of a CD of two songs by The Flow, a
group created by Kathryn Morley and including Emma
Keen and Fenella Chamberlain. Here’s to the ‘class’ of
Junior Department
Year 3
Year 3 went to Bristol
during the second half of
the winter term to visit
the ‘Matthew’, a ship
very similar to the one
Christopher Columbus
sailed across the Atlantic.
The children had a wonderful
time
finding
out what
life was
like for
sailors
500 years
ago. They sailed around Bristol
harbour on a lovely sunny day and the captain gave
some of the children the opportunity to steer the ship.
Luckily they all survived the adventure, although Bertie
looked a little worse for wear!
On Sunday 11th
October, the
junior boarders
went out on a trip
to Tropiquaria. The
children had a great
time having close
contact with a skunk,
snakes and large
spiders, to name but
a few. They also saw
a puppet show
and played in an
adventure park.
The children
were very brave holding a boa
constrictor around their necks!
In the summer term, Year 3 had a fun-packed day at
Bristol Zoo and a trip up Wearyall Hill before some
serious instruction as trainee monks at Glastonbury
Abbey!
Year 4
During the autumn term, Year 4 went to Holford to
investigate rivers and develop their understanding of
what they had learnt in the classroom. They had great
fun and the teachers managed to stay afloat! They
ended the trip going to East Quantoxhead beach to do
some fossil hunting. It was a very good day and all the
children came back to school exhausted.
Year 4 also visited Butleigh
Church. They explored all the
furniture and items which can be
found in a church. The beautiful
stained glass windows inspired
the children to make their own
designs back in the classroom.
In connection with their
history studies, Year 4 went to
Dorchester on the sunniest day of
the spring term. After becoming
experts on the life, death and
discovery of Tutankhamun, a
visit to
Maiden Castle was good
preparation for their study of
the Celts in the summer term.
Year 5
On Thursday 5th November, Year 5 set out on their intrepid trip to Caerleon
to support their work on the Romans. We had a quick snack and marched
in true Roman fashion to the museum. Here we spent some time examining
the artefacts and then taking part in role play exercises as Roman rich men
and slaves. The benefits of being a rich man soon became obvious! This was
followed by a sumptuous packed lunch (thank you Mr Bickham) in the open
air before a walk to examine the Roman Baths. Finally, we took a look at some
barrack remains and had a fun-filled time letting off steam in the amphitheatre!
At last we got
back on the
bus, exhausted
but happy. The
weather had
smiled on us and
we had had a
fantastic day.
Anglo Saxon Day
In March, Year 5 had an
action-packed Anglo Saxon
Day. The morning was
spent completing a carousel
of activities relating to
Anglo Saxon art, craft and
culture. These included
creating
Anglo Saxon pottery,
sword and brooch making
and writing Anglo Saxon runes and riddles. In the
afternoon we welcomed our visitor, who brought
many interesting artefacts, weapons and armour that
we were able to look at and try on. A very enjoyable
afternoon was had when many new and interesting
facts and stories were heard.
Why you should become a Cub Scout
I have been a member of the school Cub Pack for the last three
years and I have loved every minute of it. At each meeting we start
by raising the Union Flag,
saluting it and saying the Cub
Scout Law, promising to do
our best, be kind to others
and do a good turn every day.
We play loads of games but
work hard to gain badges for
things like fitness, healthy
eating, art and map reading.
The best bit of being a cub is the cub camp in the summer. We
get to cook sausages and marshmallows, sing songs round the
camp fire and even sleep in tents; how cool is that! Come on,
join in, you know you want to and you’ll have the time of your
life.
MEDIEVAL DAY
Year 8 took part in
another very successful
Medieval Day in the
autumn term, despite some appalling
weather conditions! Unfortunately,
this meant the archery had to be
abandoned. Pupils spent the day in
house groups and were able to take
part in medieval dancing and bicycle
jousting as well as workshops on arms
and armour. They were marked on their
enthusiasm and participation and the
winning house this year was Saxons.
CONGRATULATIONS to Year
8 pupils, Alexander Vaughan
and Brett Dickinson, who both
qualified for Round 2 of the
prestigious National Townsend
Warner History Competition. Brett
went on to be highly commended for his efforts.
Year 6 pupils
visited the
Fleet Air Arm
Museum at
Yeovilton as
part of their
studies into
life during World War II.
Year 7 explored
Chepstow Castle
during their
investigations
into the
medieval
period.
Maths
United Kingdom Team Maths Challenge, Wednesday 24th February.
The Regional Round of this competition was hosted by Millfield. We entered
two teams each consisting of two Year 8 and two Year 9 pupils. Our teams
came third and fourth, the ‘A’ team, coming just one point behind the
second placed team, which out of 240 marks is close! Congratulations to
all the MPS participants: Joshua Burgess, Jack Cadman, Brett Dickinson and
Giles Hussey. Also congratulations to the ex-prep school mathematicians,
Stacey Avvacumova, George Galliano, Kate Golledge for Millfield and
Charles Auckland, a member of the winning King’s Bruton team.
SALTER’S CHEMISTRY FESTIVAL,
Tuesday 18th May
Four MPS Year 8
pupils - John Hall,
James Everett,
Miriam Wadey and
Anastasiya Shpitko
- were selected to
represent the school
at the Salter’s Festival
of Chemistry held
at the University of
Bath. Pupils spent
the morning taking part in the Salter’s Challenge
carrying out some forensic chemistry testing along
with representatives from
17 other schools in the
region. In the afternoon
they carried out a problem
solving exercise set by the
University followed by a fun
demonstration of exciting
chemistry.
SCIENCE GOES TO SLIMBRIDGE
To tie in with their Biology
lessons, Year 7 pupils enjoyed
a visit to The Wildfowl and
Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge,
home to the world’s largest
collection of ducks, geese,
swans and flamingos.
In Physics, 6AD
investigated the strength
of different structures.
They managed to
balance 96 Jenga blocks
(unsupported) on a piece
of A4 folded card. Can
you better that?
YOUNG CHEF COMPETITION
The eventual winners of the MPS Young Chef Competition
were Miles Hart (6AD) and Melanie Pocock (8RM) who went
forward to represent MPS at the local heat of the Rotary
Club Competition in Wells in December. Melanie cooked a
delicious farmhouse chicken casserole with creamy mash and
a selection of vegetables that she grew herself, and a classic
apple and bramble crumble for the second course. Miles
Our finalists for the Rotary Young Chef competition in action at the
MPS cook off.
opted for a boned chicken leg stuffed with walnuts, watercress and Proscuttio ham in a cider jus followed by a fantastic
crème brûlée. The competition was for ages 11 to 17 year olds, so they were up against some more experienced cooks
on this occasion. However, they have gained valuable early experience for future cooking years!
Our pupils entered wholeheartedly into the ‘Best Decorated Cake
Competition’. It was all in a good cause – we raised lots of money for
Children in Need!
Winners of the best decorated cake competition:-
Congratulations to:
THE INTER-HOUSE COOKERY COMPETITION
The hotly-contested annual cookery competition took place in the summer
term. The two early rounds involved cake-making and a food knowledge
/ tasting quiz. The Angles team of Lindsay Reid, Flora Larkin and Jack
Cadman took an early lead but there were more tests to come!
In the main part of the competition the contestants had to prepare a meal
to demonstrate their skills. The menus would not have been out of a place
on Masterchef! The teams produced some beautiful dishes and the judges,
Mrs Champion, Mrs Close, Mrs Baker and our new Chair of Governors,
General Sir John Reith, had a difficult (but enjoyable!) time selecting the
winners. Angles menu, comprising Sundried Tomato Bread, Devonshire Red
Stuffed Chicken Breast and a Chocolate & Raspberry Cream Glass, won the day and some well-deserved house points.
DARTMOOR
Year 6 pupils had their annual residential trip
to Dartmoor in September. The visit is truly
cross-curricular – geography of the moor and
its National Park status; a visit to Morwellham
Quay gives a glimpse into the Victorian way
of life (and the
opportunity to dress up); a visit
to Stone Farm and the animals
who live there AND, perhaps
most important of all, a great
opportunity to make friends and
get to know all the other Year 6
pupils and staff!
The Year 8 Leavers Dinner
Year 8 Dinner
Wednesday 30 th June 2010
In the final week of the summer term, Year 8 pupils celebrated their time at
MPS with a formal dinner. Elegantly dressed young ladies and smartly attired
young men emerged to enjoy a lovely summer evening on Wednesday 30th
June. The dinner was preceded by a ‘drinks’ reception at the Headmaster’s
house.
Year 8 pupils and staff would like to thank Mr Bickham and the catering staff
for once again providing a sumptuous meal. The evening was a fitting and
memorable event for the Year 8 leavers and senior retiring guests Mr and Mrs
Cheney and Mrs Papworth.
Year 8 – Post Examinations Programme
On completion of their summer term exams, Year 8 embarked on an exciting programme of events and activities,
organised by Mr Link.
There was a trip to Big Pit, competitions such as Challenge Day and Inter-House Cookery; talks on first aid, drugs and
World War 1 and, make-up, dance, fire, art, poetry and drumming workshops. For the more energetic there were
surfing trips and the opportunity to try grass mountain boarding.
An optional long weekend at PGL in the Brecon Beacons was a great way to unwind after exams.
Riding
What a year for MPS riders! Starting at the South West
JWS Qualifier, the Eventer’s Challenge on 11th October
2009, over 20 schools were competing at Millfield for
a chance to represent the South West at the National
Schools finals in November. The MPS team, consisting
of Kathryn O’Sullivan, Bonnie Leheup, Hettie Horler
and Charlotte East, did very well, coming third overall
in the ‘Jumping with Style’ competition. This involved
riding over a series of show-jumps up to 90cm high
and then, without a pause, changing jumping style to
complete a round of cross-country jumps. This was a
great performance as the girls were competing against
pupils up to the age of 18 years.
On Sunday 28th February, the NSEA Mini JWS (Jump
with Style) qualifying competition was held at Millfield
Prep Equestrian Centre for the third time.
The course is run over approximately 9 show jumps
and then another 9 simulated cross-country fences.
The second half of the course is timed and, with it
being a qualifier for the championships, the course
had to be challenging. Riders are given marks for their
rhythm and pace around the course, change of speed
between show jumps and cross-country jumps, and also
for their riding position.
There were approximately 25 teams in total in each
class, each team consisting of 3- 4 riders, but the best
3 scores counted out of each team. There were also 15
individual riders.
It was a long day and the MPS riders were the last 2
teams to go in and jump their rounds. All riders put in
a great performance. The judges added up the scores
to find the Millfield ‘A’ Team of Kathryn O’Sullivan,
Erin McCombe, Hettie Horler and Yasmin Strutt had
won the class. All four riders have qualified for the
Championship in November. The ‘B’ team of Bonnie
Leheup, Grace Bishop and Holly Jackson finished 5th
overall - a great achievement.
Best in the West!
It’s official - Chris Watson, our chief
instructor at MPS, was the winner of
the regional heat of the British Horse
Society’s Young Instructor of the Year
competition. He was one of only 12
finalists throughout the whole of Great
Britain and Ireland. Congratulations
to him – he was too bashful to be
photographed with his trophy but we have a nice
picture of him in action!
HICKSTEAD
During the summer holiday, a team
of 3 riders (Bonnie Leheup, Kathryn
O’Sullivan & Charlotte East) competed
in the Hickstead Inter Schools Show
Jumping Competition.
There were 22 teams in the first round
but only 10 teams could go through
to the championship. We put in good
performances but it was a long wait to
see if they were good enough for us to
go through! When the good news came we didn’t have
time to celebrate, we had to stay focused and walk the
course in the International Arena.
The course, which was well up to
height, was quite challenging for
these young riders. Kathryn was the
first rider to go in our team. We all
had our fingers crossed and, as she
jumped the last fence, all the Millfield
spectators stood up in the grand stand
and whistled and cheered - she had
produced a super clear round.
Charlotte did just the same as Kathryn,
jumping a clear round; this put the Millfield Prep team
into 1st place, with one rider from each team left to
jump. Bonnie was the final rider in our team to jump;
she put in a great round, just knocking two poles out
of their cups. This put us into a very respectable 2nd
place overall.
As Charlotte and Kathryn had both jumped clear, they
had to jump off for Individual placing. They both
jumped clear again and
were fast against the
clock.
Kathryn finished one
second behind the
winner to take 2nd
place and Charlotte
took 3rd.
Well done, girls! Chris Watson, BHSII SC, SE
STONAR MINI ISODE
At the Stonar ISODE
on Sunday 23rd May,
the Millfield Red team,
consisting of Erin
McCombe, Bonnie
Leheup, Hettie Horler
and Charlotte East, won
the 95cm Class, 14 points
clear of the nearest
challenger. The girls did
Mrs Shayler presenting the plaque
to Erin, Bonnie & Hettie
exceptionally well, with some well deserved individual
places as well. Well done!
Boarding Life
How do the boarders spend their weekends when school finishes on
Saturday? The answer is – they have lots of fun! At the beginning of
each term Mr Coates, Director of Boarding, distributes a list of weekend
activities that boarders can sign up for. Activities on offer include, trips to
Tropiquaria and Wookey Hole Caves; ice skating in Bristol; ten-pin bowling
in Taunton, jet skiing in Bridgwater, laser fun in Bristol and skiing / ringos
at Churchill.
Those are the trips off campus but there is so much to do in our own
school grounds. Every September boarders enjoy a Multiactivity
Extravaganza when they can try just about anything that takes their fancy
as these pictures show...
Helping Others
It has been a busy and fruitful year on the charity front at MPS. It is one of
the quietly important aspects of school that underpins many of the activities
undertaken by the children.
We have an ongoing link with PLAN where we sponsor an Ethiopian boy called
Engedaye and we tend to raise money for him through our school discos. We
are fortunate in having a personal link with the charity through Dr and Mrs
Sharp. They travel to Ethiopia once a year and meet with Engedaye and his
family. On these trips they are able to take out donations of clothing made
by MPS – there are quite a few of our blue sweatshirts being worn in the
mountainous region of Ethiopia where Engedaye lives!
Our non-uniform day saw money being donated to CHICKS, a charity offering
holidays to disadvantaged children based in the South West. We also held a
cake sale for Children in Need with a special cake decorating competition taking place as well.
Year 8 pupils presented a cheque for £500 to
BIBIC – just one of the charities that benefited
from our May Fair.
MPS responded to the Haiti appeal with vigour. The children, including boarders, made a huge number of cakes with
the money being donated to a charity called World Vision who are on the ground in Haiti. We were able to present a
cheque to them for nearly £1,500.
Most of our musical events also have a retiring collection and this year The Yeovil Coronary Care unit benefitted from
several donations.
The boarders contribute to charity as well in various ways. Last year the charities supported by the boarders included
Children in Need, sponsoring an African Child through Action Aid, an autism charity, as well as money being donated
to retired donkeys and dogs. These donations are made through the children’s own pocket money. Some boarders
have also worked for the Somerset Wildlife Trust, cleaning the Somerset Levels as part of community work. In May
this year all boarders took part in a charity car wash (much appreciated by staff and parents alike) with all proceeds
from this event going to Help for Heroes.
Kevin Cheney – Headmaster 2001–2010
Mr Kevin Cheney, who was
appointed as Headmaster
of Millfield Preparatory
School in January 2001,
retired at the end of July
after a distinguished career
in private education during
which he has held three
Headships.
Kevin, who is 60, masterminded
the move of the pre-preparatory school from
the centre of Glastonbury to the School’s main Edgarley Hall site just
outside the town. He also oversaw the building of two new boarding
houses and was the inspiration
behind the use of Middle Edgarley
Farm as riding stables on the
School’s campus.
His vision to improve the overall
look of the School has resulted in
better facilities for children, giving
them an environment to be proud
of, interspersed with specially commissioned
sculptures. He oversaw the building of a new
sports hall and the conversion of the old one into a theatre. He also revamped
the dining hall.
During his 9-10 year headship, Kevin introduced the
teaching of Mandarin as an extra-curricular activity. He
appointed a Grand Master to teach chess. The School
gained publicity for the introduction of English type, a
touch typing course. He developed bus routes for day
pupils among many other achievements.
Millfield Preparatory, under him, has been at the
forefront of ECO and environmental awareness. It was
one of only 10 independent schools to achieve Green
Flag status and one of the few so far to put up a wind
turbine.
Kevin has led a committed, supportive and excellent
group of staff. As a result, the School has received glowing reports from Ofsted
for its Early Years provision and from visits by Independent Schools Inspectorate
(ISI). A recent Ofsted boarding inspection found the School
to be outstanding in all respects and the ISI report at the
same time found the School to be ‘outstanding’ and ‘good
in all areas’. The lead inspector commented: ‘Children at
Millfield Preparatory have the time of their lives’.
The School was also visited by Sue Palmer, author of
‘Toxic Childhood’ who said it was the least toxic school
environment which she had ever seen. Another visitor was
Jim Rose, the Government’s Primary Schools Advisor, who
also commented on the excellence of the School.
In Mr Cheney’s final year the pupils have had great success
in music, art, drama and sport. The Under-13 boys won the
Rosslyn Park Sevens and several national championships
organised by the Incorporated Association of Prep Schools (IAPS). These included: cricket, rounders,
hockey, swimming, golf, trampolining, cross country running and fencing. Apart from this, the girls and
boys have been successful in a variety of other sports at county and regional level.
26

His first headship from 1986-92 was at Trinity
School, a 3-18 day and boarding school in
Teignmouth, Devon. He then became Headmaster
of Cranmore School, an all boys Catholic prep
school in Surrey.
His first teaching job was
as Assistant Housemaster
at Clifton College, Bristol,
from 1977 to 1980. He
then joined the staff of
Millfield School for six
years as a Housemaster
and a Geography teacher.
He was also Commanding
Officer of the Millfield
Combined Cadet Force
(CCF).
Mr Cheney is married to Hilary who has been
fully involved in the work of Millfield Preparatory.
They have four grown-up sons: Thomas aged 29,
twins Edward and Samuel aged 26 and Henry
aged 19.
Hilary and Kevin, we wish you both a long
and happy retirement.
The restored summer house
The opening of one of the many successful May Fairs
Eco Day
This year we also said a sad farewell to Mrs Cathy Papworth who has
truly been the ‘Green Queen ‘ of MPS.
MPS enjoyed a hugely successful Eco Day in the last week of the
summer term, organised with Mrs Papworth’s usual efficiency, involving
every pupil and member of staff in both the Prep and the Pre-Prep.
This was our fourth Eco Day and, as we look around the school, we can
see the legacy of earlier Eco Days in the form of the orchard, the bog
garden and pond, to name but a few of the positive outcomes.
During her ‘reign’ as
champion of all matters
green, MPS has gained and retained Eco School status (something
that is not lightly awarded), erected a wind turbine and established a
Green Council with pupil representatives, providing a forum for open
discussion on environmental matters.
Mrs Papworth has been tireless in keeping pupils and staff on their
toes with regard to recycling and saving energy. Thanks to her, we are
all much more aware of wastage and much more appreciative of our
environment.
Mrs Papworth, we will miss you but your message lives on!
Millfield Prep School Parents’ & Friends’ Association
News – 2009-10
The Parents’ and Friends’ Association has had another
busy and successful year - here are some of the
highlights!
This year’s Charity May Fair
had a spectacular circus theme
and raised £10,000 which
was split between 31 different
charities. The Fair featured
stilt-walkers, jugglers, hulahooping,
tight-rope walking and
the children even got a chance
to practise their own circus
skills in specially organised workshops. There was also
Maypole and country dancing
by the pre-prep children, Talent
Show and busking and all the
wonderful and varied class
stalls. In addition, 25 local
charities attended and ran their
own stalls.
This year’s May Fair
Committee was very ably
led by Karie Clifford,
Dominee Worman and
Laura Zaky, who worked
together so well to ensure
that all ran smoothly, was
lots of
fun and raised so much money on
the day. Many thanks to them and
to the whole May Fair Committee
- a great team effort!
Jenner, a carer from
Children’s Hospice
South West, talked
movingly about how
the Hospice makes
such a big difference to
children like Bethany
and their families - this
illustrated perfectly
their motto of ‘making the most of short and precious
lives’. A special May Ball Committee worked hard to
make the evening such a great success – many thanks
to all who helped.
The Quiz Night in November 2009 was another
successful evening with our quizmaster extraordinaire
Mr Harris who struck just the right balance between fun
and intellectual challenge – a huge thank you to him for
all his hard work! The quiz was fiercely contested, with
the winning team, ‘Flushed Away’, clearly delighted to
be presented with their Gold HMC certificates from Mr
Cheney (see photo)!
On Saturday May 22nd we held a Venetian Masked
Charity May Ball and a fantastic total of £20,000 was
raised for Children’s Hospice South West. The Sports
Hall was transformed
into a Venetian scene
with pictures of
Venetian characters,
giant masks, gondola
poles and of course
masked guests!
The evening started
with champagne
and canapés in the
evening sunshine
followed by a delicious Venetian style table buffet.
Many thanks to our superb auctioneer Nick Oliver for
the Grand Auction which was followed by dancing
to the fabulous live band ‘Doctor Chocolate’ and Mr
James’ super disco! This
year’s Ball was in memory
of Bethany Chinnock-
Schumann who sadly died
in December 2009, aged
11 years and whose sister,
Amelia, was in the preprep
2004-07. Caroline
We held our first ever MacMillan Coffee Morning on
Friday 25th September 2009 where we raised £785
for MacMillan Cancer Support. Our regular events
of Welcome Coffee mornings and Champagne and
Canapes have also been well supported.
This year in particular we would like to thank the
retiring Headmaster and Mrs Cheney whose guidance
and whole-hearted support of the Parents’ & Friends’
Association throughout their stay at MPS has been
invaluable. Moreover, during their tenure, we have
raised well over £100,000 for a wide range of charities.
We would also like to thank the following for their
help and support throughout the year - Mr Link,
Amanda Cosway, Janette Tuckwell, Tim Kelly,
Lawrence Whitehead, Janet Baker, Ray Bickham and
all the Chartwells catering team, Mr Dutton & the
groundsmen, the gardeners and the cleaning team.
A special mention should go to Paul Begg and his
carpentry and maintenance team and Andrea Coombes
and Mandy Rossiter for their help with the Ball.
We are always looking for new committee members
and helpers so please do feel free to get involved if you
would like to – please contact the Office or any of the
Committee Members if you are interested. As I come
to the end of my time as Chair of the Association, I
would like to thank all those who have supported our
events over the last few years and helped us to raise
such amazing amounts for charity.
South African Exchange
We were pleased to welcome five South African pupils to MPS as
part of the well-established Year 7 Exchange Programme. The
pupils came from the town of East London, Eastern Cape, where
the boys attend Selborne School and the girls, Clarendon Primary
School.
Ashton Arthur, Faith Marthinussen, Senyo Simpson, Alexander
Thorne and Andrew Spanjaard were the guests of Helena Macey,
Matilda McCrum, Barley Nimmo, Josh Barton and Tom Strawford
respectively.
We hope they enjoyed their stay in England and their time at MPS.
Cross Country
The Mendip Leagues
In the Mendip Junior and Senior Leagues our teams put in some
very strong performances. In the Junior races (Years 5 & 6) Lydia
Lavallin led the field and Michael Nicholson was our top performer
in the boys’ races. At senior level our four teams – Year 7 Boys
and Girls, Year 8 Boys and Girls – did well, with the Year 8 Girls
consistently winning the team races, Amy Cooper coming first on
every occasion. The Year 7 Boys similarly won all three team events
with Calum Eley, Asher Roberts and Jamil Carse keenly contesting
the lead.
The English Schools Cup
Both boys’ and girls’ teams won through the first round at
Clayesmore on Friday 9th October and went on to the Regional
Round, held on Saturday 14th November at MPS.
The girls, led by Amy Cooper in 3rd place, put in a brave attempt
but finished fourth and missed out on the finals by 3 points.
However, on home ground, the boys won - Charlie Martin (7th),
Alexander Allen (9th), Jong Hak Lee (11th), Tom Parkinson (15th),
Asher Roberts (27th) and Oliver George (33rd) - and so progressed
to the National Finals in Newquay on 5th December, where they
finished in 7th place.
The National Prep Schools Championships,
Malvern College, Sunday 28th February
Thirty-five schools from all over the country contested this event.
Historically, we have always done well but this year we probably
had our best-ever performance. We had two individual champions
in Lydia Lavallin and Amy Cooper, a fine second place from Charlie
Martin, a 9th place for Michael Nicholson in the U11 race and a
6th place for Olivia Allin. We also won both the U13 Girls and U13
Boys team races.
fantastic 6th overall in the Youth E Boys group, winning the swim
convincingly.
Later in November, in dreadful weather conditions, a brave group of
MPS pupils competed at the South West Schools Biathlon qualifier,
which regularly attracts 500 competitors from around the region.
Alexander Allen and Charlie Martin had a close tussle for 1st and
2nd place in the run, with Alexander eventually adding that win to
a first place in the swim. In the Year 5 Girls, Kitty Snaydon had a
very good day, taking 2nd place.
Four qualifiers then went on to compete at the National Schools
Biathlon Championships at Crystal Palace in March. There was a
high standard of competition and the MPS children set a number
of personal best times. Commiserations to Alexander Allen, who
had qualified and had top ranking in the country, but was too ill to
compete on the day.
Year 5 Girls Kitty Snaydon 7th
Year 6 Boys Adam Brown 27th
Fraser Owen 39th
Early in the summer term, an excellent turnout of 14 children
competed in the South West Biathlon Qualifier at Millfield. Many of
the children in the team were competing in their first multi-event
competition and they acquitted themselves well. Alexander Allen
was in fine form, winning the run, the swim and the overall Youth
C Boys title convincingly, qualifying alongside team-mates Tom
Burley and Charlie Martin. James Reed and Poppy Casterton also
qualified in their respective categories.
Over the first weekend of the summer holidays, several of the
regional qualifiers competed in Liverpool at the British Modern
Biathlon Championships. Alexander Allen ran a storming PB in the
run of 2:58 for 1000m to finish 2nd overall – Well done, Alexander!
A special mention must also go to Charlie Martin who, already
established as one of the best runners in the school, recognised his
weaknesses with his swimming and worked really hard over the year
to improve his times, with great improvements. Well done, Charlie
– a great example for others!
Mr P Brooke Houghton
champions.
of the National Prep School
Championships.
Alexander Allen, Tom Burley and Charlie Martin at Liverpool
Edgarley Relays, 24th March
The 26th Edgarley Relays attracted very strong schools from as far
as Cornwall and Cumbria..
Year 7 & 8 Girls - The MPS girls had not won the event for 12
years with Penair School dominating in that time, but the team
of Amy Cooper (4th), Olivia Allin, Flora Larkin and Minnie Rider
stormed round and beat Newquay Tretharras School.
Year 7 & 8 Boys - The boys had only won the event twice in the
last 10 years so they were hoping for a win. However, sickness hit
the team of Charlie Martin (2nd), Jong Hak Lee, Tom Parkinson
and Alexander Allen on the day and they eventually finished third
behind Stonehenge School and Penair.
Mr J Etherington
Multi-Event Sports
The first event of the year was the South West Modern Triathlon
qualifier at Millfield in October. Five MPS pupils entered, many
taking part in their first competition, and all enjoyed the shoot,
swim and run events. They all qualified successfully for the national
event in Wolverhampton in November.
Only Adam Brown and Georgianna Kloos were able to compete at
the British Modern Triathlon Championships, but they gave 100%
and both set personal best scores in more than one discipline.
Georgianna was 18th in the Youth D Girls age group, with a super
4th place in the swim. Adam made it into the medals with a
Sailing
IAPS National Sailing Regatta –
Weymouth Sailing Academy, Portland
On Thursday 13th May, Emma
Stevens and Becky Ager represented
the school in the U13 series of races
at this inaugural event. It was a
fine day, starting with light winds
which increased during the afternoon.
Fifteen boats from 11 schools took
part in the U13 event (with a further 15 boats in an U11 series). The
girls were on the water for 4 hours, entering no less than 5 races,
in what were lovely sailing conditions. Sharing the helming from
race to race, this was their first competitive event after only four
training sessions together on Durleigh Reservoir. The opposition
was stiff, with crews coming
from as far as Windermere.
However, our girls were a
credit to themselves and
to the school in that they
achieved a best result of 9th
place in one race, finishing
13th overall. So very well
done to Emma and Becky!
Mr P Ratcliffe
Swimming
The success of this year’s swimming squad came to a climax in
the summer term. At the National IAPS Finals at Crawley in May,
our boys smashed 5 IAPS records and both boys’ and girls’ teams
won the overall top school titles. It was then on to the South West
Regional Championships in June, where Rio Kurihara and Calum
Eley both achieved new national times and Rio broke two school
records. Claire Fowlie, Hannah Smith, Caitlin Brown and Vidya
Sondhi were all gold medallists.
But the culmination of the swimming year came at the National Age
Group Results, 28th July -1st August, Ponds Forge, Sheffield. The
MPS swimmers were in great form and ready to compete against
the top club swimmers in Great Britain. They produced some
magnificent swims and won a total of 8 Gold medals, 1 Bronze and
set 22 personal best times.
Results:
Rio Kurihara had another excellent performance at the National Age
Groups, winning five individual gold medals in - 200m Breaststroke
(2.28.19) in a Personal Best time (PB) by 11 seconds which was
also a British Age Group Record, the 200m I.M (2.16.97), a PB by
5 seconds, the 100m Breaststroke (1.09.80) in a PB by 3 seconds,
the 100m Butterfly (60.53), a PB by 3 seconds and the 400m
I.M (4.47.38) in a PB by 11 seconds. Rio came 3rd in the 200m
Freestyle (2.02.81) in a PB by 3 seconds and also won 2 Golds as
a member of the boys’ 4 x 200m freestyle relay and the 4 x 100m
Medley relay team.
Rio set 6 new school records and is to be congratulated for
winning the Top 13 year old boy in the Country Award.
The age group championships culminated in Millfield being crowned
the Boys Top Age Group Club in the country!
Well done to :
James Guy (ex-MPS1 Bronze)
Joel Knight (ex-MPS 1 Gold, 1 Silver)
Rio Kurihara (5 Golds- MPS) (pictured below)
Relay team members
James Chater (Millfield),
Calum Eley (MPS) and
Sam Carnell (Millfield).
Lydia Lavallin (at her
first Nationals) won the
100m Breaststroke in a
best time by 6 seconds
and came 4th in the
200m Breaststroke.
Coaches Helen Gouldby
and Lin Skirton with Rio
and his 5 gold medals
and Top Boy award.
Netball
An excellent term of
netball from all the MPS
teams culminated in the
U13 team (as Regional
winners), the U12 and U11
teams (both as Regional
runners-up) all progressing
to the National IAPS Finals
in Brighton on Saturday
13th March.
The U11 Girls
All three teams met up against very tough opposition; the U12s lost
to Brighton College in the final, the U13s finished in 3rd place and
the U11s did not get through the group stage but did very well to win
their final game against The Manor, a team who hadn’t lost all day.
Seven girls from the U13 team were selected for the Somerset
County squad and five from the U12 side were selected for next
season. Earlier in the spring term, the U13A and U12A teams
finished as runners-up
in their respective MPS
Tournaments. The U12B
side did very well to finish
up as semi-finalists when
playing against A teams.
The U13 team did well
to win the Bryanston
Tournament, while the
U11A girls claimed victory
in the Leweston event
and were undefeated in
friendly matches.
The U13 netball team with Mrs Rawlings Every girl in the Junior
Department and Year 6
played a competitive game of netball and 95% of the Years 7 and
8 also played a competitive game. Well done to all the girls who
represented MPS teams at netball this year and who have achieved
excellent results.
SAVE THE CHILDREN TOURNAMENT - On Sunday 2nd May,
MPS held a ‘Save The Children’ Doubles Tournament which raised
over £1000 for the charity. In the boys’ event we had 7 pairs and
in the girls’ event we had 5. Alexander Vaughan and Max Hein were
victorious in the boys and Jenny Vincent and Ellie Pawsey in the
girls. Two teams went on to represent MPS at the Regional Finals
in September, where Ralph Pattar and Alex Hagon won the boys’
event and Abiola Roberts and Iona Clive won the girls’ event. The
National Finals were played at Roehampton in October and, we are
delighted to report, that Alex and Ralph won through 5 matches to
become National Champions! Abiola and Iona lost to the eventual
winners in the semi-finals but played some great tennis to get so far.
AEGON U13 NATIONAL SCHOOLS - As we go to press, the U13
boys’ team have reached the National Quarter Finals after beating
Tretherras School, Newquay in the last round of the Regional playoffs.
The U13 girls did very well to reach the Regional stages but
unfortunately lost to a strong Red Maids team.
In the House Matches, Jutes managed to win all three year group
Girls’ Hockey
As the results table shows, the girls enjoyed a very busy and
successful season.
The U13 squads won a high proportion of their matches. The
A team won the County Tournament and went on to represent
Somerset in the West of England Tournament in March. The
B squad achieved an unbeaten season in their school matches
and the team also competed in the County Tournament where
they finished in a very creditable 3rd position. The squad were
runners-up in the West IAPS Tournament and this qualified
them to compete in the IAPS Nationals at Queenswood School in
December, where they finished third in their group.
U13 County Champions
The U12A squad won the Regional IAPS Tournament and represented
the West in the National Competition at Queenswood School, where
they finished as silver medallists. To complete their unbeaten run the
team were also winners of the MPS Tournament.
Congratulations to the following girls who were selected for Junior
Development County Training: Abby Hacker, Caitlin Brown, Emma
Keene, Fenella Chamberlain, Flora Larkin, Grace Bishop, Georgia
Young, Jane Considine, Jennifer Vincent, Kathryn O’Sullivan, Lindsay
Reid, Mel Pocock, Molly Edgley, Olivia Bellak, Olivia Allin, Phoebe
Considine, Charlotte East, Emma Churchill-Coleman, Harriet Jeanes,
Hettie Horler, Holly Jackson
The U11 teams also gained good results in their school matches, with
the A squad winning the Port Regis Tournament and being runners-up
in the Clifton Tournament.
At U10 level the squad won the MPS
Tournament and the Badminton
School Tournament while the U9 and
U8 squads gained in strength during
the season.
The girls’ teams played over 120
matches during the season and all
girls had the opportunity to represent
the school in matches.
Congratulations to the MPS
U11A team who won their MPS
Tournament
Oxford at the end of June, involved a semi-final match against
Port Regis. The girls were determined that this would be
their day! With top scores from Abiola Roberts, Ellie Pawsey,
Olivia Bellak and Jenny Vincent, MPS scored an excellent 18
rounders. Port Regis also hit well and made 17, which made
for a very tense and exciting second innings. Again, another
excellent batting innings gave MPS a total of 35 ½ rounders
(with several hits leaving the pitch and threatening nearby
windows!). Port Regis started their second innings strongly but
Flora Larkin, Lindsay Reid, Kathryn O’Sullivan, Harriet
Jeanes and Phoebe Considine.
crumbled under the excellent bowling, back stop and first post
combination. This meant a repeat of last year’s final against
Foremarke Hall.
Again we were put into bat first. The bowling and fielding
from the opposition was excellent; but good scores from
Phoebe Considine, Ali Hussey and Anna Vashurkina gave us a
total of 10 ½. Foremarke, in reply, struggled to produce any
great consistency against our bowling and scored 7 ½. The
second innings only took our score to 16 ½ as we seemed to
hit every ball to their best catcher. Foremarke obviously now
saw that the game could be theirs for the taking. However,
great catches from Megan Gillespie, Ellie Pawsey and India
Maxey helped secure the first 4 batters dismissal. Great
cover work from Kathryn O’ Sullivan and Grace Bishop kept
the scoring to a minimum. The innings was then crushed
by superb bowling and backstop work from Ali Hussey and
Jenny Vincent, thus winning the game by 4 ½ rounders. A
superb team effort in hot conditions and the first win in this
competition since 2003.
Well done to all the team for their superb support of each
other and their determination to make the day a success.
Football
The undoubted highlight of the
2009-10 season was the success
of the 1st XI in reaching the
semi-final of the National IAPS
Cup. At that stage we went down
to the eventual winners, Bolton
School, after a long journey
north. In earlier rounds, we defeated Elstree (3-0), Truro (6-2),
Ardingly (6-0) and Aldwickbury (on penalties). We were delighted
to receive a special award by the sponsors, Rensburg Sheppard, for
having got further in the competition than any other prep school in
the three years of the competition’s existence.
In the National IAPS 6-a-side competition, we triumphed in the
Southern Area event at Elstree, defeating St. Andrew’s from
Eastbourne 2-0 in the Final. However, on Finals Day at Shrewsbury,
we were below par and, with only one win in our five matches, did
not succeed in our aim of retaining the title first won in 2008.
In the ESFA U13 competition, we went out 2-3 to Lytchett Minster
(in the final minute of extra
time), while a much weakened
team lost 2-5 to Huish Episcopi
in the County Cup. In league
games, the 1st XI was rarely
at full-strength and a severely
weakened side lost to Wells Blue
School to dash any hopes of
retaining the District Cup.
In the ESFA U12 competition,
we suffered an early round 1-4
defeat against a talented team
from The Grange School, Bristol. However, in the Spring Term,
the team triumphed in the District Cup, defeating old rivals from
Fairlands 2-0 in the Final.
In the usual October block fixture against Port Regis, involving Years
7 and 8, we won all seven matches, the highlight being a 3-1 success
by the U13A team.
The highlight of the
Junior Football season
(Years 3-6) was the
success of the U9 team
in winning the MPS
7-a-side Invitation
Tournament, defeating
The Paragon School
from Bath 1-0 in a tense
and exciting Final. The
squad comprised Kasey
Aldridge (Capt.), Alfie
Gibson, Vinny Jones,
Oliver White, DJ
The Victorious U9 Team
Crosby, Ben Shaw, William Smeed, Joe Mallett, Scott Reed. A week
earlier, at the U10 Tournament, the MPS team did very well to reach
the Final before going down 0-2 to Fairlands Middle School.
We once again sent two U10 teams to the King Edward’s 7-a-side
Festival in Bath. The ‘A’ side was unbeaten, winning 2 and drawing
3, while the ‘B’ team was undefeated until the final game.
The U11 team won just two and drew two of their ten games but
always gave of their best, ending the season with a win against
Blundell’s Prep. The standard of play in Years 3, 4 and 5 has rarely
been higher with virtually every game won. The future looks very
bright and promising!
Boys Hockey
Our 1st team, having won the IAPS National Championships (from
an entry of 80+ Prep Schools), went on to compete in the West of
England Championships held at Millfield in late April. Representing
Somerset, we had convincing wins against Hereford, Wiltshire,
Devon, Gloucester, Dorset and Cornwall to become Regional
Champions.
This victory took the team to the National Finals in Nottingham on
Friday 7th May. We won 3 of our 4 group games and progressed to
the ‘super four group’ to determine the overall championship. In a
superb encounter against Whitgift School (South Champions) we
drew 2-2. A final victory over Dean Close (West Qualifiers) was
enough to see the team become National Champions. From an
entry of approximately 500 prep, state, independent and grammar
schools this was an amazing achievement. We have not won
this title since ’96 and ’98 when old boys (Mantell, Brothers etc)
progressed into the senior Great Britain team.
Winning both the IAPS and National Schools competition is a double
no school has ever previously achieved. Andy Tait was named
‘Player of the Tournament’ for both the IAPS and National Schools’
finals. Darren Atkins was joint captain with Andy and delivered
a superb acceptance speech on both occasions. The team (Luke
Appleton, Harry Anstock, Conrad Lewis,Darren Atkins, Andy Tait,
George Hankins, Charlie Strutt, Rio Kurihara, Jack Costigan and
Herbert Rumney) has ended up being:
Somerset Champions, West of England Champions, National Schools
Champions, South West Prep Schools Champions and National Prep
Schools Champions. This is an unprecedented ‘grand slam’! (see
team inside cover)
The U12A side enjoyed a
highly successful season,
one of the highlights
being the team’s now
customary triumph in the
Bryanston Tournament.
The U11 team surpassed
themselves in the IAPS
Regionals by qualifying
for the next stage of the
competition – where they
acquitted themselves well
without being able to
secure a ‘medal position’. One of the highlights of the term has been
the outstanding play of the goalkeeper, Joseph Grogan Poulsen –
who has certainly been kept very busy!
Congratulations to the U10 team who won their Tournament at the
Senior School, defeating local rivals Hazlegrove 1-0 in the final. The
squad comprised Ned Dunning, Oran McNulty, Tristan Rice, Davey
Jones, David Greenhill, JJ Tonks, Tom Hall and Oliver Smith. The
U9s put up a gallant performance in their Tournament but three
draws at the group stage weren’t quite good enough to put them
through.
Jo Morgan-Hughes, Director of Sport
GIRLS FOOTBALL
In the ESFA U13
competition we went
down 0-6 to a powerful
North Somerset team
from Backwell School.
However, the U13/12
7-a-side team did
very well to finish as
runners-up in the Port
Regis Tournament,
narrowly going down in the Final 1-2 to Gillingham School. The
squad comprised Holly Tozer, Jenny Vincent, Phoebe Considine,
Jane Considine, Lindsay Reid, Monica Clifford, Lace Jones, Ruby
Beeden, Lucy Churchill-Coleman.
Holly Tozer represented the Somerset Girls U14 team and is a
member of the Somerset FA Girls’ Centre of Excellence.
Skiing
On Monday 10th May, eight pupils attended the SATIPSKI Slalom Skiing event in the Hemel Snow Dome. We travelled up the night before
and benefitted from a good practice on the almost empty slope. On the day of the competition, the slalom course was laid out and the
boys were allowed the briefest of inspections before their individual timed runs. Every boy managed to successfully complete both runs.
A number of boys were skiing 1 or 2 years young, which meant our younger pupils were skiing against 14 year olds, so it was a great
achievement for our A Team to come 7th and our B Team to come 10th out of 14 teams. Congratulations to all our skiers:
Team A - Saul Landrock, Yuu Kurihara, Hamish Gillams and Edward Anderson
Team B - Joshua Forster, Conor Forster, Thomas Tant and William Ponting.
Golf
Somerset Schools Golf Championship, Long Sutton Golf Club,
Monday 26th April
A team of 5 prep school golfers performed very well in this event
which is open to all schools in the county and players under the
age of 18. In the gross event, JJ Fletcher went round in a score
of 78, which placed him 8th out of a field of 96, thus being named
as a reserve for the South West U18 team. In the nett event, when
handicaps are taking into consideration, Freddie Sexton came 3rd
in the boys’ section, Jenny Vincent was 3rd in the girls’ section and
Darren Atkins and George Hankins both performed very well.
Finally, in the nett team event, the team of JJ Fletcher, Freddie
Sexton and George Hankins were crowned Somerset Schools Golf
Championship Nett Team winners.
IAPS Golf Championship, Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club,
Monday 14th June
The MPS Golf team played in the IAPS National Championships at
the world famous Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club. The team,
consisting of JJ Fletcher (Capt.), George Hankins and Freddie
Sexton, performed extremely well, retaining the Team Trophy for
the 5th successive year with an aggregate total of 143 points, the
highest ever. In the individual event we haven’t had a National
Champion since 2006, but this year our golf captain, JJ Fletcher,
went round in level par amassing an individual points tally of 54 to
be crowned IAPS National Champion.
Cricket
For the first time in (almost) living
memory, the 1st XI enjoyed an
unbeaten season, winning 20 and
drawing 5 of their 25 matches.
The good weather in late April,
May and June ensured that very
few games were rain affected. One
The 1st XI
that was abandoned was the match against Somerset U13 on 1st
May when the visitors were a somewhat embarrassing 36-5 before
the rain set in. We won the National J.E.T. Shield for a record sixth
time – our fourteenth National title in 14 years. On ‘Finals Day’ in
Oxford, we comfortably defeated Cheam School by 7 wickets and,
in the Final, St Olave’s from York by 6 wickets. We also retained the
County U13 Shield, convincingly defeating Fairlands Middle School
in the Final. Impressive victories were recorded against the County
sides of Cornwall (twice), Cardiff and the Vale and Mid Glamorgan.
The team’s batting was very strong right down the order with Max
O’Leary, George Hankins and Dan Escott all scoring hundreds. In
fact, the team was never completely bowled out. The fact that we
scored at such a fast rate meant that, in the ‘timed’ games, we were
able to declare early in order to try and take ten opposition wickets.
Harry Anstock was an excellent opening bowler and deservedly took
most wickets. The averages show that he was supported well at the
other end and in the field. It was good to see left-arm spinner Josh
Burgess doing so well at the end of the season when he came into
the side.
For the first time in three years we qualified for next season’s David
English / Bunbury Cup when our U12 side defeated old rivals King’s
Hall by 4 wickets in the Final, David Scott taking 5-7 (including the
hat-trick). Our U11 8-a-Side team battled their way to the County
Final before going down by a narrow seven run margin against
Taunton Prep. (who went on to finish third nationally). U11 skipper,
Teddie Casterton, scored 421 runs at an average of almost 40, his
highest innings being 75 v Somerset U11.
As is customary, all of our twelve teams won far more games than
they lost. It was very satisfying to see both Camilo Rey and Josh
Howard-Higgins scoring centuries for the 5th XI. Our Junior teams
(in Years 5, 4 and 3) all did very well and it will be interesting to see
how some of the very promising players develop over the next few
years. Our Girls’ team played very well to complete a notable double
success over Clifton College Prep. Our U13B team came runners-up
in the MPS Twenty20 Tournament. In the House Competitions,
Jutes won in Year 7 whilst, in Year 8, Angles and Danes shared the
title.
Our Somerset County age-group players in 2010 were –
U13 Max O’Leary, George Hankins, Andy Tait, Luke Appleton, Max
Phillips, Dan Escott
U12 Archie Dunning, Josh Bayliss, David Scott
U11 Teddie Casterton
Ned Dunning, Oran McNulty, Tom Hall, Jarett Tonks and Kasey
Aldridge all represented the Somerset Schools U10 team. Emily
Bayliss played for the Somerset U13 Girls’ side.
MPS Tournament, Tuesday 22nd June
JJ Fletcher won the RC Champion Trophy and the team of JJ
Fletcher, George Hankins and Freddie Sexton won the Cheney
Trophy. Jenny Vincent came 2nd in the girls’ section. Well done to
Luke Appleton and Robin Everitt who also played well.
Staff/ Pupil Challenge, Wednesday 23rd June
Congratulations to the team of Mrs Sarah Champion and Freddie
Sexton who won the title for the second year running.
ISGA Junior Open, Tuesday 29th June
Congratulations to JJ Fletcher who was
placed 3rd after a count-back and to
Freddie Sexton who came 2nd in the nett.
Stowe Putter, Saturday 28th August
Heavy rain made the Stowe Putter even
more of a challenge this year. However,
the greenkeeper’s heroic efforts – baling
out bunkers at first light - were rewarded
as the competitors proved more than up to
the challenge and produced some great golf
in this the 43rd playing of the competition.
The winner of the Stowe Putter was our
own JJ Fletcher with 54 points. This is the
second year in a row that JJ has won The
Stowe Putter and the third successive year
a pupil from MPS has won this prestigious
event. We also won the team trophy for
the second successive year and for the
fifth time since 2001– well done to Freddie
Sexton and JJ Fletcher.
found it difficult to cope with the pressure exerted from a good
pack which possessed some dynamic forwards and an outstanding
set of backs who had pace as well as great running and handling
skills.
The 2nd XV also enjoyed a successful season and they played
some very entertaining rugby throughout the term. They were
perhaps the one of the most talented second teams we have ever
had at the school.
The U12As had an outstanding set of forwards this year who were
athletic, powerful and committed and they helped deliver some
super results for this unbeaten team. Many of the backs were also
very talented and they were able to capitalise on good ball won by
their forwards. They retained the U12 trophy in a tournament held
at Taunton Preparatory School without conceding a single point.
This team will go on to form the basis of a promising 1st XV.
The U11A team also enjoyed a good season and they demonstrated
much skill and determination, as well as a willingness to learn.
They reached the semi-finals of the Port Regis U11 tournament
as well as the final of the Super 12s which was held at Monkton
Combe. A mixture of powerful forwards and skilful backs often
proved too much for their opposition to cope with.
The U10A team played well over their season and they achieved
some excellent results. There is much promise in this set of boys
who improved considerably as the term progressed.
The U9As have also been successful and have produced some
excellent victories. Reaching, though narrowly losing, the final of
the Blundell’s U9 Tournament, was one of the highlights of their
season. This demonstrated they have ability and they will go on to
do well over the coming years.
A special mention must be made for
Darren Atkins, Will Branch and Miles
Letchford who were all picked for
England Barbarians at their respective
age levels. Congratulations should also
go to Joshua Ramsden
and Ben Mallett who
Darren Atkins & Will Branch
represented the South
West Barbarians in their age groups.
Danny Grewcock, the Bath, England and British
Lions rugby player, gave an evening talk to
boarding pupils.
RUGBY SEVENS – 2009/2010
This was a season noted for some
outstanding success for our teams.
The sevens season started back in
early December with a visit to the
Bryanston Sevens where the 1st VII Danny Grewcock with Josh
won this prestigious tournament Ramsden and Darren Atkins
in quite horrendous weather
conditions beating Cheltenham College 24 points to 7 in an
exciting final. This was the first time we have ever won this event
and was a sign of things to come.
At the Port Regis Sevens in early March we managed to reach the
final but unfortunately lost to an excellent team from Kingswood
School in Bath. At The Downs Sevens we overcame the host
school 33 points to 12 in the final. At the Millfield Sevens the 1st
VII won their group and progressed impressively through to the
final against Monmouth, where the boys put in a great performance
to win by 22 points to 5.
The U11s also played well in the Millfield Tournament and
although they didn’t progress to the main part of the competition
they qualified for the Cheney Trophy which they went on to win,
beating Sandroyd by 17 points to 7 in the final. At the South West
Sevens, held in Plymouth, they again performed well and managed
to reach the semi-final where they narrowly lost to a good team
from Blundell’s School; at The Downs Sevens the U11s again
played well and won the Plate Tournament,
beating Bristol Grammar School in the final.
We entered an U12 team into the Second
Team Tournament at the Caldicott Sevens
and they were unlucky to lose by 5 points to
7 in the final to the host school.
The finale to the Sevens season is the National School Sevens
which is the biggest rugby tournament in the world and the most
prestigious event on the schools’ Sevens circuit. In the group
matches we played against Highfield, The Mall and Ardingly and
we won these matches convincingly despite losing one player
with a fractured wrist and another to illness. The boys therefore
qualified for the quarter-finals on the following day and a 31
points to 7 win over Sandroyd in this match set the team up for a
testing semi-final against a physical Downsend side. Some superb
defensive organization and clinical finishing ensured we went
into the final after an impressive 28 points to 0 win. Although
Millfield scored the first try in the final against a spirited Aldro
team the opposition fought back to take the lead. Two more tries
before half time ensured that Millfield went into the break on top
and with two more tries in the second half it meant that Millfield
won an exciting match 31 points to 7 thus becoming the National
champions which is a tremendous achievement.
In this tournament we scored 228 points and only conceded 3
tries. This demonstrated that we were not only a good attacking
team but that we also had magnificent defensive qualities as well.
History was made at this Rosslyn Park with all three teams from
Millfield winning their age groups, ie at U13, U16 and U18. This
has never been achieved before and firmly puts Millfield on the
map as the premier Rugby Sevens school.
Many congratulations to the members of this outstanding squad
who won three major sevens tournaments as well as the nationals.
However, they were not just a superb team but also wonderful
ambassadors for their school.
(See the Rosslyn Park winners inside the cover).
Life In The Pre-Prep 2009-2010
Forest School
Forest School is a big part of our weekly curriculum. It is wonderful for the Pre-Prep children to experience our great
outdoor area.
Some of the exciting activities the children have experienced this year have been – making nettle soup, looking at
habitats, building a clay oven, making dens, building see-saws, practical maths, cooking popcorn on the camp fire,
making collections, working together as a group and identifying mini-beasts! A big thanks to Shane Potts from
Millfield who helped to build the clay oven.
Autumn Term 2009
BOOK WEEK
The Pre-Prep children celebrated
National Book Week by dressing up
as their favourite book character.
Everyone had a great time!
HARVEST FESTIVAL
During the Autumn Term,
parents and friends joined the
children to celebrate Harvest
Festival. Each year group
presented a song or poem. Y2
focused on ‘Water for Life’.
We collected many generous
food boxes for the Salvation
Army that are used to support
families in the local community.
THE FESTIVE SEASON
The Pre-Prep children all enjoyed
the festive season. The children took
part in the Nativity, ‘Tinsel and Tea
Towels’, Christmas Fun and Games and
the annual Christingle Service with
Rev. Allen in St. Andrew’s Chapel.
Making Christingles is always a very
busy morning with the year groups
mixing up so that the older children
help the younger.
YEAR 2 AHOY ON THE
SS GREAT BRITAIN
The Year 2 trip to the SS Great
Britain gave the children the
opportunity to discover what
the life and times were like for
people back in 1800’s The children
explored the ship and even dressed
up in costumes and pretended to
be the people waving off the SS
Great Britain on her maiden voyage!
YEAR 1 @BRISTOL
The Year 1 children had a fantastic day trip to @Bristol.
They spent time exploring the ‘move it’ area which
included a range of equipment such as machines,
strong shapes and water wheels. The children took
part in an exciting interactive workshop investigating
forces through fun activities including making their
own windmills and launching rockets.
PRE-SCHOOL AT THE ABBEY
The Pre-School children
had a wonderful time at the
Abbey ruins, looking for signs
of autumn. The children
had a shuffle in the leaves
and collected lots of leaves
and acorns to make picture
frames back in school.
RECEPTION VISIT TO ORCHARD
VETERINARY PRACTICE
The Reception
children visited
Orchard Vets
in Glastonbury.
Mrs Taylor was
kind enough to
take her puppy
Charley along
for a quick
check up. The
children found
out how to care
for a pet and
created their
own vet’s clinic in the classroom.
Celebrating 25 years of
the Pre-Prep
In February 2010 we celebrated 25
years of the Pre-Prep with a party.
We were joined by former members
of staff and pupils, displayed
photographs covering a quarter of
a century, ate deliciously sticky 25
cupcakes and planted a Kilmarnock
Willow tree on Apple Tree Green.
Spring Term 2010
Curriculum Focus Week
Our aim for Curriculum Focus Week this year
was to enable our children to understand about
the food groups and the need for a varied and
balanced diet. They had the opportunity to see
where food is produced and how it is processed
and marketed.
Each day looked at a different
food group – carbohydrates,
protein, fruit/veg, dairy and
sugars with activities based
around each. We had hands-on
sessions making bread, pizza,
butter, fruit salad, smoothies,
stir-fry and biscuits - everyone
enjoyed eating their homemade treats!
There were various trips to farms, supermarkets and mills – a
great week was had by all!
Burns the Bread
The Pre School children enjoyed a visit to Burns the Bread bakery in Glastonbury. They had
a guided tour around the bakery and the opportunity to see how all the delicious goods are
made; they even got to see how the jam is put into the doughnuts! Everyone enjoyed choosing
a cake from the shop to take home.
After their visit to the bakery, the Pre-
School’s role play area became the Little
Red Hen Café and Bakery. The children
had great fun playing and dressing up as
the baker and serving one another tea and
pastries!
Bristol Zoo
The Year 1 children had a day trip to
Bristol Zoo. The purpose of their visit
was to explore the zoo for African
animals and discover the different
habitats they live in; from the desert
to the rainforests and savannah.
The children enjoyed an ‘African
experience’ session led by a member
of staff from the zoo. The experience
took place in a tent themed room to
create the atmosphere of what life is
like in the savannah. The children
met lots of African creatures such as
millie worms, rats and a scorpion.
There was also the chance to look at
various bio facts from Africa including
skins, tusks and horns.
Sir Teachalot
Year 2 thoroughly enjoyed a fun
day spent with Sir Teachalot.
The children learnt about castles
and medieval life and had the
opportunity to dress up in costume.
They looked at the weapons knights
would have used and built castles
using wooden
blocks which had
defensive walls. Each child had a turn
at jousting and the day ended with
a story told by Sir Teachalot about a
Princess and a dragon. The tale was
acted out by some of the children and
Mrs Neeve was the dragon!
Summer Term 2010
Playtime on Apple Green
Court Farm
Pre School had a wonderful trip
to Court Farm. The children fed
the lambs, stroked the donkeys,
watched Jodi the cow being
milked, saw some, pigs, goats,
chickens, geese, guinea pigs, rabbits
and horses, played in the barns and
even had
a ride on
Farmer
Edwards’
tractor…
What a day!
Reception Trip to Kilve
Rain did not dampen a great day of mathematical activity at Kilve! The children counted in 2s, 5s and 10s, compared
the size and weight of pebbles and created their own pebble sculptures. Some even wrote their names in pebbles.
42

Thistledown Farm
Year 2 visited Thistledown Farm to
see the new arrivals in the lambing
shed, goat pen and chicken house.
The children had the opportunity to
bottle feed the lambs and kids and to
hold the chicks.
The children
watched Pearl
the sheepdog
round up the
flock of ewes
and lambs and
had great fun
playing with the
puppies.
The Magdalen Project
Year 1 visited the Magdalen
Project for a day of outdoor
adventure. They became
Darwin explorers when,
armed with pooters, spoons,
magnifying glasses and an
assortment of containers, they
hunted for mini-beasts to examine before returning
them to their homes. In the shallows of the River
Axe they went river dipping and had tubs and fact
sheets to help identify
the contents of the nets.
Feeding the hens was a
tickly sensation and the
children discovered that
new laid eggs are warm to
the touch!
Wilbur and the Web
The end of term concert, set in a farmyard, tells the story of Wilbur the smallest piglet in a litter. He becomes friends
with Charlotte the spider who lives in his barn and begins to understand that life is ongoing and that friends are never
forgotten.
The concert was a big hit and the children really enjoyed being a part of such a ‘terrific’ performance! Many thanks to
everyone who helped towards this year’s concert.
