the Bob Gassman Herd...
“One Heck of a Powerful Club Calf Producing Herd!”
It is with great pleasure that I have the opportunity to disperse the Bob Gassman herd—a set of cows that, I have come to realize,
has a tremendous background. They include 70 years of selection, and 2010 was the 31st year for A.I. at Gassman’s. It was a lot of
fun to go through the index cards on each cow and see the old Maine pedigrees on the dam’s side. These good genetics are lost to us,
except in the bottom side of these longtime, long-running herds that started the club calf business. When you see these cows, you’ll
understand just how important those genetics were and why they jump started this industry.
The opportunity within this sale offering may be unequaled to any that I have sold. We are simply rolling up in one package what
a man and his father have accomplished over their lifetime. Bob’s dad, Myron C. Gassman, sold his first 4-H prospect calf in the late
50s to Greg Callies and continued selling until Bob’s career, which included a win at the South Dakota State Fair in 1971.The cow
power here is impressive! Some of the calves sold by each cow are reported in the footnote, but not all. These calves were sold out
of the pasture, and the later success of many is unknown to Bob. Many major club calf suppliers visit the Gassman herd each year.
I’ve quickly come to realize that Bob is a great cowman. He has not just chased popular bulls, but he has a great eye. He has bred
and selected cattle within his herd and carefully implemented outside genetics. The Angus influence in these cows is the result of
Bob’s purchase of some very good Angus herd sires that are high quality, big hipped bulls that had lots of look; they are non-typical
of many low birth Angus.
It is important to note that this sale has come about and is necessary due to life changes. Bob is retaining his 2010-born heifer
calf replacements and will also retain a flush on a few selected cows. The cows that Bob has selected to retain a flush on do not
necessarily represent the best steer producers, but they have been selected in hopes that he can flush them maternally to generate
the next chapter in his life and his cow herd.
There are a lot of potential donors in this sale. If a person pays close attention, there is opportunity here to build a life-changing
program for one’s self. The quality is so deep, and there are so many young cows that are yet unproven. Our biggest concern is
making sure that potential buyers take the time to study and look seriously at these younger four to six year olds.
The cows have been primarily lotted in age order, so there are featured cattle all the way through the book.
Many good cows are NOT pictured. Pay close attention!
Videos of these cattle will be posted closer to sale time at collinscattleservices.com.
The videos should be extra impressive. Please give myself or Bob a call to discuss the lots.
We will be glad to assist with your sight-unseen purchases.
Special thanks to Bob for all his hard work on this catalog. He hand
wrote all the footnotes on each cow! Also, special thanks to Steve
Bonham for pointing out this great cow herd and opportunity to me.
This is going to be a sale for the record books and one that is so neat
because of all the club calf history behind it. Study long and hard—
here’s a big chance, a real big chance!
3-26
Bob: This great looking cow is hard to part with. She is flawless in every way,
and the model for the rest of them too! She has mainly had heifer calves,
including the 514 daughter selling as Lot 117. 326 produced a Who’s First steer
sold to Lyle Williams, and a Smooth Sailing heifer is in the 2010 crop. She will
hit the grand slam with this mating. Take note here!
Sale Note: This is a major donor prospect and one of the best cows to sell this
season. 326 is powerful, big ribbed and ultra complete. She is highly marketable
and should produce big returns with a calf by Monopoly or Heat Wave. She is
sired by a great line of cattle. Her sire, Diesel, is a son of Cecil, who is a
grandson of Sugar Ray. This is a long line of careful selection within herd and
not just a progression of using the most popular genetics. Many of the cows
selling have a solid foundation of old Maine genetics on the bottom side of their
pedigree. I think this is hard to find today and lends to the stoutness and power
that you will find in this herd.
Bob: This big bodied, wide walking, big volumed cow is one of my top picks.
Sale Note: Here too is a powerful donor prospect with worlds of potential. She
may be our pick of the sale. Her pedigree is several generations of Gassman
breeding. She is by Aviance, the son of Sugar Ray that has done so much good in
this program. She goes back to an old Maine-bred daughter of Explosion. Like
many of the cows selling, she is safe to Monopoly and cleaned up with a Heat
Wave clone. The chances for return in this offering are phenomenal. Don’t miss
this cow—a great one to market and turn into a big-time donor.
POWER 835
Bob: This younger, smaller framed cow is my pick of the second calvers. I think
she is very powerful, deep, stylish and sound. She is hairy and has correct
angularity, great shoulder, feet and legs…perfect structure!
Sale Note: It is tremendously hard to find females that have this kind of look
and quality and still maintain lots of power and muscle. This one has it. Super
cool, young and many generations of cow family on the bottom side. Another
real sale favorite and superior donor candidate.
A very important thing to point out is the quality of Angus herd bulls that
have been used and selected by Bob in this herd. The Angus bulls he has used
have been carefully selected and are very high quality, big hipped Angus sires
that have some bone and substance. The Angus represented in this set of cattle
are not your “run of the mill” low birth weight Angus sires. They are impressive
and add a great deal of pattern, style and usefulness to these cattle.
was widely used. Who Made Who daughters have
Bob: I can still see this cow as a heifer. She will be missed. Tyler Kroupa showed her in
2000 and 2001; she won many shows. When Greg got sick, he brought her back. Her show
career was short, but her legacy at Gassman’s is longstanding. She never, I repeat “never”
misses. She has always settled A.I. She is the mother of 21 Degrees Below, a bull that has
been used heavily and turned down an offer of $40,000 from Phil Lautner. She produced
another herd bull, 22 Degrees Below. Her daughters are keepers. She is an absolute great
cow for anyone to own. A great producing daughter sells as Lot 105.
Bob: The Really Windy daughters are super great cows! They have great feet, legs, udders,
hair and style, plus they are docile. The past sales on this good cow include a Heat Wave at
$19,000 to Steve Bonham and another Heat Wave to Martin Richter for $2,500. She also
has a daughter, Lot 123, in the sale.
LOT 105
Sale Note: This cow didn’t picture the best (it was
about 10 degrees!). She is very complete, lots of
body and extra stout. She is without question one
of the leading producers in the sale. Bob felt like
maybe this cow should have started the offering.
Bob: All I can say is, “Look at her pedigree!” They don’t come any better!
It is clubby and maternal—you decide. A Monopoly steer sold for $7,500 to
Reimann, and a Monopoly sells in the bred heifers as Lot 350. The dam of
Lot 106 just produced an Unforgiven steer for $2,500 to John Kramer.
Sale Note: This is without question one of the best looking, biggest hipped
cows in the offering. Extra cool with lots and lots of look. Her pedigree is
stacked with club calf greats, and her dam is four or five generations of
Gassman selection. This is a cow that needs special attention. This mating to
Bob: This one’s easy to describe: She’s perfect! Super front, great hip, lot’s of
Who’s First steer to Steve Bonham.
Sale Note: This was one of our top picks at picture time. Wow, what a looker!
Super cool, square hipped and lots of profile. This is a young cow headed for
Bob: This cow goes back to 732, from 48 Yellow—not a bad call. 48 Yellow was
the dam of Payback and a great producer in this herd. Ed Cody loves this cow and
bought 047, a Wooly Bully heifer in 2005; he said she’s one of his better cows.
This cow has never had a bad day. She did me a favor and had a heifer calf in
2010—she’s in the keeper pen. Her mother, 732, had a $5,000 Who Made Who
steer sold to Hilbert and an All About You steer sold for $2,800 to Lautner.
Another About Time steer sold for $7,000 to Goshe-Fevold.
Sale Note: Bob is proud of this female and the pedigree behind her. Wooly Bully
has sired some tremendous daughters, and this one’s color makes her extra
special. She too is extra big down her top and out her hip with lots of look. This
Bob: I guess I would have to say once again, this cow is one of my favorites.
Her looks say it all! There’s nothing I can add to perfection. She’s young and
bred right; she should be check marked. Past sales out of this cow include an
Unforgiven heifer at $4,200 to Art Wells, a Who’s First steer for $1,800 to
Sale Note: You just don’t find this kind of look very easy anymore. Super long
Bob: This younger cow is picture perfect! Some will say she is one of the best,
and I won’t argue that. She is so deep and big hipped, has tremendous volume
and capacity. She has super feet and legs too. She should have all the makings of
a great investment.
Sale Note: This is without question one of our favorites. Tremendously big
bodied, big boned and thick made, she is a direct daughter of OCC Legend and
out of a great maternal-influenced Habanero x Draft Pick bred dam. This
young female has a world of potential. She could produce a great herd bull, seed
stock or top selling prospects. She too was one of Bob’s picks, and as he stated,
“It’s real hard to see these great young cows go.”
801 sells bred to Heat Wave for a quick return on investment. There may be as
much value and pedigree in this sale offering as any we have seen in a club calf
producing history.
Bob: This is the thickest Flashback cow I have. She is very powerful. Her grandam, 526,
had the Reserve Champion Steer at the Ohio State Fair, and she produced a Barely Legal
steer that was successfully shown by the Rick Stacey family; he was pasture purchased for
$5,600. Also, the 526 cow had the 929 Loaded Gun cow, which had the Jack Frost steer
Kroupa bought for $12,900. The 929 Loaded Gun turned up open that year and Greg
bought her to flush.
Bob: I bought this cow as a heifer in Crosscreek Farm’s annual sale in 1998; she was the high
seller. I knew her bloodlines and thought she would make a terrific cow. She had Who’s First,
which speaks for itself! She also has daughters in the herd. In 2008 she produced a Who Made
Who bull for $6,750 to Dax Lautner, and she is the dam of Tongue Tied. She raised a Smooth
Sailing steer in 2010 sold to Gene Goos for $2,000. She has worked great! She will be missed.
Bob: I absolutely love this heifer! She’s deep, sound and has lots of volume and
capacity plus femininity.
Sale Note: Without question, this is one of the best, most powerful bred heifers
I have ever had the chance to sell. She has a unique pedigree and is backed by
many years of Bob’s careful selection and breeding. This is a powerhouse,
packed full of volume! She’s wide based, good legged and huge hipped. If there’s
a halfblood Simmental heifer in the country that has lots of value, this has to be
it. She’s moderate and has lots of potential as a club calf producer or
foundation for a Simmental program. You just don’t find them like this one.
How hard it must be for Bob to part with her!
Bob: Some say you’re splitting hairs between this power heifer and her half
sibling Lot 344. She, in her own right, takes no back seat to any of them!
Sale Note: Bob’s right! It’s amazing that one offering can have two daughters
of one bull, and they both be this good. This heifer, just like Lot 344, is a super
good one. She has lots of bone, rib and thickness. They are versatile and have
the ability to be placed in a Simmental seedstock program, or they have the
power, hair and moderation of frame to be great club calf producers. You have
to really see these two heifers to appreciate them. It will be hard to generate the
value that these heifers will eventually prove down the road. This is a
tremendous pair of heifers.
