“ We never give in and we always win.”

Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty
March against
the Money Men
of bankers coming to their office windows to see what was going on.
This route took us through the very heart of the City and took nearly
1hour 20 minutes for us to complete.
Along the way via the megaphone all the companies that have dumped
HLS were pointed out. Slowly, surely and noisily we made our way to
America Square where HLS market maker Cantor Fitzgerald are based.
The only thing is though Cantor Fitzgerald have stopped dealing with
HLS and they have now decamped and fled to Canary Wharf...bloody
typical!
On April 28th during World Week for Lab Animals, SHAC
held a march through the City of London to get the message
across that to invest in HLS is financial madness. The only
problem was that in January when we planned this demo
there were 15 targets in the City of London yet as we approached
April 28th these targets started to rapidly
disappear with HLS being kicked off the Over the Counter
Bulletin Board, and then the day before the March being
kicked off the Pink Sheets. What timing!
With this happy predicament we decided to keep the march
in the City but afterwards split into 4 teams and did demos
at HLS customers. About 100 of us moved off on the start of
the march in Finsbury Square. We made our way along Moorgate,
London Wall, Bishopsgate and Leadenhall bringing the
traffic and the office workers to a standstill with hundreds
World Week for
April 28th.
4 Teams -
Lots of demos
Lab Animals
After the March and a rousing speech from Keith Mann at the
end, minibuses were driven into America Square and activists
split into 4 teams. These demos were highly successful
and we are hoping to do the same on Friday 16th June (see
back cover for details). It was so good to encompass in one
day a March in the City against HLS financially then to go on
afterwards and hold demos against some of Huntingdon’s
largest customers and with good numbers too, GlaxoSmith-
Kline’s worldwide headquarters seeing 30 activists outside
until well after 6-30pm.
All the demos were loud and visual, again ramming home the
message that if you deal with HLS then the whole world will
know about it. Below is a brief outline of which team went
where. After the demo, lifts were given back into London or
to a main line train station. We finished the day coming out
of London at 10pm tired but happy that we had brought
the disgusting Huntingdon Life Sciences to thousands of
peoples’ attention and more to the point to the attention of
those that matter: City bankers and HLS customers.
Team 4
Team 1
06
Team 3
Team 1 travelled out to Berkshire where they held
demos at HLS customers Wyeth and Abbott Labs in
Maidenhead.
Team 2 stayed in London and held demos at HLS
customer Astra Zeneca, The Mauritian Embassy and
Kuoni Travel. The last two were targetted because
Mauritius is one of the largest exporters of primates
in the world and all the primates that are shipped to
HLS come from Mauritius. Kuoni Travel specialise
in holidays to Mauritius and support the primate
trade.
Team 3 After the march this team headed off to GSK’s
massive HQ in West London (see picture on right).
Team 4 This team travelled to Pfizer’s European HQ at Walton
Oaks just off the M25 in Surrey. They then finished off at
massive customer of HLS Novartis in Horsham where they
greeted the workers as they went home.
Summer’s here
so it’s time for ...
Listed here are companies that provide vital services to Huntingdon Life Sciences, be they courier, animal transport, supply or building
companies. Please contact all the companies listed politely and inform them of HLS’s record of animal cruelty and unbelievable staff
incompetence. You can be sure that HLS won’t tell them what goes on behind the razor wire and high fences, so it is up to you to make sure
the truth is heard by those who are helping HLS kill 500 animals a day. You can keep your communications simple: a simple request saying
‘please don’t support animal cruelty’ is enough. The important thing is to take action and speak out for the voiceless victims of Huntingdon
Life Sciences.
Spotlight on
PDP Couriers:
The main logistical
supplier to HLS
Some years ago a small company came to our
attention called PDP Couriers after we were
leaked information about the Bristol Oncology
Centre and their dealings with HLS. The courier
company that had made the deliveries of samples
to the centre was a company called PDP
Couriers based in Middlesex. So we contacted
PDP and asked them whether they would agree
to make a statement saying that would never
deliver to HLS again. They did this very quickly.
Now a number of supporters have asked us in
the past how do we know when a company is
telling the truth. Well the honest answer is that
we always take statements at face value whatever
we may secretly be thinking and can do
no more until we can prove different. With PDP
this didn’t take long in coming as it came to our
attention that they were still making deliveries
to HLS. So we contacted them and at first they
strenuously denied it but then when
they realised that we KNEW they were lying
they said “Oh we were only delivering to Centralabs”.
Centralabs are the clinical trials part of
HLS, operating out of their site at Alconbury. By
this time it had also come to our attention that
they were advertising at
vivisection conferences and were delivering to
HLS in an unmarked silver transit van reg EF04
TXA.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, at the end of last
year we were told by an HLS worker that PDP
The following are extracts
from letters written by
activist Barry Horne whilst
in prison and at times on
Hunger Strike. What an inspiration.
Yeah the 18 year sentence
was a bit of a shocker! But
I thought it might happen so
it’s not too bad. Needless
to say I’m appealing against
a lot of the guilty verdicts.
Whatever, I’m still smiling
so they’ve failed to bea t me.
This is going to be the last
Just to let you know that
everything is going well
from here and I am fine and
well. I’m om day 18 now and
experiencing no problems.
It’s pretty grim down here
in the hospital but nothing I
can’t cope with.
“ ”
Day 33 now and my condition
is starting to deteriorate
somewhat. I’m still in good
health but, to be truthful,
things will get worse from
now on. But mentally I am
strong and will remain so
because I believe the Hunger
Strike is right. This Labour
Government are betraying
the animals and must be
stopped from doing so. So
this protest will continue
until such time as we win
justice for the animals.
CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY
A short while ago we were sent documents that
showed that Cambridge University’s Centre for
with Huntingdon Life Sciences and were in
fact an active partner in experiments carried out at
HLS. With a name like the Centre for Brain Repair
you can imagine the kind of vicious, painful braindamaging
experiments they are involved in with
Huntingdon.
This is not the first time a unit at this hospital has
come to our notice as Addenbrookes were also involved
baboons. If you look on the sheet to the right
HLS
bank of america sell
all their shares in hls
(and here’s just a small clue why)
Over the past 6 months Huntingdon Life Sciences have steadily
lost one major shareholder after another which is causing them
real problems. Bank of America held about 300,000 shares in HLS
and after demos in the US, Belgium and Holland they decided HLS
just weren’t worth it and offloaded the shares. This really highlights
the strength of SHAC and the way we can hit a global company
on our terms across the world.
Frequently
Asked Questions
We often get asked certain questions
about demonstrations. Here
are some of the regular ones
answered.
How do I join a demonstration?
If you are interested in coming
on a SHAC demonstration then
please contact us via e-mail or
phone and we’ll let you know if
there are any demos happening
in your area. If there are any
demos in your area then we’ll tell
you where and when to meet up
with the demo. Simple as that.
What if there is nobody in my
area?
Don’t worry. A lot of the demos
are mobile demos so campaigners
will be in cars which means
that they may be able to pick you
up from a train station or somewhere
else that is convenient. Or
if you’re up for it you could organize
your own demonstration
local to you. Contact us if you
How many people will be there?
Demos vary in size. Sometimes
there may be loads of people out
but demos can still be effective
with just a few people.
But I won’t know anyone there?
Everybody went on their first
there as well. You will be made to
Does it matter if I’m not a vegan
No. Just because you disagree
with what HLS do doesn’t mean
that you will be expected to be
away. We’re all fighting for the
same cause, and that is to close
down HLS. No one will have a go
at you if you are wearing leather
shoes! We all had to start somewhere
and coming on a demo is a
brilliant place to start.
What is a mobile demo and what
will I be doing?
A mobile demo is where campaigners
hold demonstrations at
various customers and suppliers
of HLS, moving from one site to
the next by car or other means,
but that will be organized already.
How long will it last?
Again, it depends on the different
demonstrations you go on. Some
last longer than others but if you
need to know you can always
ask.
Does it really make a difference?
Definitely! It’s not the only way to
make a difference but demonstrations
have achieved so much.
It’s demonstrations that make
companies realize that working
with HLS really isn’t worth it.
When you’re on the demonstration
you may not necessarily see
the effect that you’re having but
it doesn’t mean that the demo is
ineffective. Look at the position
HLS are in now, that couldn’t
have been achieved without demonstrating.
How Low can they go? HLS now
kicked off the Pink Sheets!
Well as far as trading exchanges go,
Huntingdon really have hit rock bottom.
After multiple demos in New York and
an email action action alert from the UK,
Huntingdon’s last remaining market maker
Vertical dropped out and with no market
maker HLS were bumped off the Pink
Sheets. So where have they gone? Well
before I answer that question, let me first
explain how the financial markets view the
Pink Sheets...Yes the same Pink Sheets
HLS have just been knocked off. The quotes
below are from a financial website called
www.pennymarkets.com:
“It’s a bit like having to move out of your
house in Beverly Hills to an industrial park
20 miles east of downtown L.A.,” said Marc
Beauchamp, the executive director of the
North American Securities Administrators
Association explaing what it’s like to go on
to the Pink Sheets.
.
“We are the tier of stuff that can’t, won’t, or
doesn’t want to be listed on the exchange
NYSE.”
So in market terms HLS have gone from the
industrial park in LA to a shack (pardon the
pun) by the road as they have moved on to
the Grey Markets. Now the Grey Markets
are not an exchange as such but more of
an auction, there is no website you can
check on called the Grey Markets or any
kind of organised structure. This leads to
unbelievable volatility with the share price
bouncing up and down. Huntingdon are so
desperate to keep their share price up that
they are forced into propping up the share
price themselves. Numerous examples have
been seen of this, for example yesterday
their share price was at $9.25 so along
comes someone and hikes it up to $11 (It
still finished the day on $9.25). So the next
time you are in Tesco’s and you bill comes
to £60 remember to say to the cashier: “I’m
not paying that but I’ll give you £80.”
The reason for this desperation is the need
to keep their share price inflated above $8
as this makes their market capitalisation
$100 million which is a stipulation for them
to be considered for the NYSE, which they
still hold a hope of getting on to hence the
advert to the right.
Recently HLS reported their first quarter figures
2006 which are compared like for like
to quarter one 2005. In Q1 2005 their sales
were $43, 294 million and in Q1 2006 they
were $42, 455 million. Profits also dropped
from like quarter to quarter from $2.5 million
to $470,000. Cass noted on the figures
that they were “disappointing in absolute
terms” and complained of “unusually high
cancellations.”
It is astonishing that with all the help that
Huntingdon have had from Tony Blair, Lord
Sainsbury and industry bodies that their
turnover has not trebled or quadrupled. But
it is only now that it has climbed above pre
1997 levels, after all the help they have had!
The upshot is that we have been having
fanatastic success against HLS on the
financial markets but we need to step it up
against HLS customers and push down
their orders.
HLS are more than ever considered a lame
duck by the financial lenders across the
world and an indication of this is seen in
Huntingdon’s recent $70 million refinancing.
The fact that Andrew Baker had to
personally guarantee $30 million of this is
very telling. Do you think Richard Branson
has to underwrite loans to Virgin? Of
course not. On top of that, the interest on
this loan is very very high and the clauses
in the contract are many, for instance the
loan can be called in if Baker or Cass leave
the company!
The last word must go to Andrew Baker
CEO of HLS who recently whined in the
Sunday Telegraph 14th May 2006. Can you
imagine any other CEO ranting hysterically
in the national press like this?
“My low point has been caused by not getting
support - an extraordinary feeling of
being abandoned.”
“ Why have we allowed 10 - perhaps 20 at
most - pathetic, sick, pychologically disturbed
people to intimidate a country of 60
million people?”
He then went onto to blame David Blunkett
and Securicor and even the City itself
claiming “...the excuse that they want to
protect their employees just doesn’t cut it
any more.” Talk about losing control? And
anyway as if the City cares what Andrew
Baker thinks!
Dumb and Dumber
Yep you’ve guessed it! Just when we thought the animals’
enemies couldn’t get any dumber they’ve become even
more dumb! The ad below was taken out in the New York
Times at a cost of $150,000. It came out on April 28th on
the day SHAC were marching through the City of London.
It is thought that the ad was taken out by the Centre for
Consumer Freedom in the US. They are a rightwing industry
body like the Research Defence Society in the UK. On the
evidence of this advert they’re certainly as stupid as the
RDS. Whilst HLS are desperately trying to calm already
frayed nerves amongst investors after their demise on to
the Grey Markets their supposed friends’ great idea is to..er..
frighten the very people HLS are trying to calm.
And you know what? Two weeks later they took out the
same advert in the New York Times spending in total
$300,000.Maybe they have been infiltrated by AR sympathisers
cos we couldn’t have done a better job ourselves!

To the City that never sleeps: Neither do we!
A SPECIAL REPORT ON NY BASED WAR - WIN ANIMAL RIGHTS
Imagine this: you are part of a small but tenacious
group of activists dedicated to stopping
the horrific cruelty that we all know goes on
at Huntingdon Life Sciences. Over a two-year
period, you have spent almost every weekend
organizing protests, rallies, candlelight vigils
and educational stalls outside of the home of the
principal investor in Huntingdon Life Sciences,
Andrew Baker. You have weathered everything
from blistering heat waves through blizzards,
thunderstorms and just about every other
weather condition.
Due to a massive campaign of public education
in Baker’s neighborhood, you enjoy the support
and the respect of the community. Baker’s
neighbors regularly wave and cheer your group
on and many even provide financial support for
your efforts. Despite all of that, you realize that
Andrew Baker, Chief Executive Officer and major
shareholder of HLS and his wife, Susan Baker,
don’t really care about the 15 foot banner naming
and shaming Andrew Baker as a Puppy Killer or
that their neighbors turn away from them.
The Bakers have been shunned by many of their
neighbors who have expressed support for the
steadfast protestors that are always at the front
door, rain or shine. They have had their local
pet supply account canceled when they found
out what Andrew Baker did for a living. Baker’s
limousine driver quit his job rather than continue
to drive what he called ‘an ugly monster’. By now
it is clear that the Bakers just don’t care as long
as they can escape the city to their Long Island
hideaway or their home in California’s Hollywood
Hills.
What do you do when you learn that the New
York Police Department is holding secret meetings
in Baker’s apartment? Yes, we know about
Baker’s meeting with Lt. Albano of NYPD Legal
and General Counsel Mark Bibi. How do you deal
with the fact that you are with the only group in
the city that cannot get a sound permit to use
a bullhorn during a protest? What do you do
when you realize that as long as you continue to
protest, members of your group will be subjected
to police harassment, intimidation and arrest?
So, what do you do when faced with this
situation?
Declare WAR! On October 23, 2004 at a national
weekend of action against Huntingdon Life Sciences,
Camille Hankins, Greg Kelly and a third
activist launched a grassroots group whose mission
was to take the resources that were devoted
to influencing the Bakers and to re-deploy in a
different and more effective direction. Instead of
hoping that the message would be heard by the
Bakers, we decided to speak to them in the only
language they seem to understand. Money talks
and we decided to speak directly to their bottom
line!
Although from time to time, activists still visit the
Bakers (we have heard that most of these visits
occur in the dead of night and are rather loud and
unruly), we have redirected our attention to those
individuals and companies that have helped Baker
and HLS to stay in business. We studied the
brilliant campaigns being waged in the U.K. and
modeled our efforts after those that we witnessed
leading to the greatest economic impact.
At first, we focused on the board members of the
various high profile customers of HLS. Companies
like GlaxoSmithKline, Bristol-Myers Squibb,
Roche and Novartis. All had board members that
either lived in New York City or had prestigious
board affiliations here in town. By doing this, we
served notice that we had changed our tactics
and our modus operandi. The days of applying
for sound permits and giving notice of our intent
to demonstrate have given way to a new tactic of
simply turning up and loudly protesting.
Next, we focused on the money men: the investors
and especially the market makers, most of
whom had offices in New York City. In August,
2005, when the HLS parent company Life Sciences
Research (LSRI) announced that LSR would be
moving up to the big board, the New York Stock
Exchange, we knew we had our work cut out for
us. Immediately upon hearing
the news, we
launched a major
offensive to take
our message to
Wall Street. For
the next 6 weeks,
we campaigned
in the Wall Street
area almost every
day. We held banners
and graphic
posters, distributed
countless leaflets,
protested market
makers and sent out
action alerts to thousands
of activists.
On September 7,
2005, after working
almost 48 hours
non-stop, we heard
that the campaign
to Stop Huntingdon
Animal Cruelty had
won a stunning and
important victory. We
knew that we had taken
part in a campaign that
had made history, as
there has never been a
NYSE listing that was
stopped because of
political activism. We,
at WAR, were happy
to know that we had
played a small but
important part in that
victory. We watched
as LSRI stock, which
fell back on to the
OTCBB, dropped
from a record high
of $18.30 to a low of
$10.00 and still
falling.
After months
of focused and
intensive campaigning,
LSRI
lost its last market
maker and
fell from the
OTCBB to the
Pink Sheets.
Not content
with this, WAR
launched
Operation:
Knockout
which systematically
targeted
market
makers and
investment
houses with
an eye toward
knocking them out
thus
taking LSRI
off of the
Pink Sheets.
Again,
our efforts
along with
the efforts
of all of the
campaigners
around the
world were
rewarded
when the last
market makers,
Vertical Group
and Seaboard
Securities,
dropped LSRI.
LSRI’s listing
on the Pink Sheets was history as they fell
into the financial dead zone known as the Grey
Markets.
Most recently, WAR has launched a tongue-incheek
campaign, Operation: Sinking Ship. With
all of the money men gone, we now turn our
attention back to those companies that literally
keep HLS afloat. Companies like GlaxoSmith-
Kline, Pfizer, Novartis, Roche and Bristol-Myers
Squibb account for the lion’s share of HLS
revenue. They keep HLS in the killing business.
Each of these companies has vulnerabilities and
skeletons in their closets. Skeletons, which we
are sure, they would rather keep buried. We all
know what happens to the skeletons of animal
abusers and exploiters. They have a way of getting
out. Our mission is to speak the truth and to
educate the public about the horrors of animal
testing.
Since our humble beginning just over 18 months
ago, WAR has enjoyed both national and international
press coverage from countless TV stations
and media outlets including CNN in the USA and
SKYE-TV and Canal Plus in Europe.
Our work has been
covered by prestigious
financial publications
such as Dow Jones,
Bloomberg Financial,
Financial Times, Forbes
Magazine and the Wall
Street Journal. We are delighted
that we have been
able to use these press
opportunities to publicize
and shed light on the cruelty
and animal abuse that
take place every day in the
laboratories of Huntingdon
Life Sciences.
We owe a debt of gratitude
to those who have
mentored us and shown
us the way (you know who you are), as well as
to the countless activists around the world who
have continued to fight the good fight and who
have contributed to these accomplishments. We
salute those imprisoned warriors that have been
temporarily taken from us. You are never far from
our thoughts and you give us inspiration and the
strength to carry on. Until you are free and can
rejoin the fight, we dedicate our efforts to you.
WAR has proven that a small group of impassioned
and dedicated animal activists can
overcome the odds and achieve great success
with limited resources. Our challenge to you is
to continue to grow stronger and to work harder
because our animal brothers and sisters, imprisoned
in HLS and other hellholes just like it, need
us to double our efforts for their liberation. They
are counting on us. The ultimate success has
never been more achievable than right now.
Until all are free,
OK so you want know what will be happening on the day? It’s really simple and effective. We will be
meeting at GlaxoSmithKline at the address above from 8am onwards. You need to come no later
than 11am. If you can come earlier you will be more than welcome. If you need a lift from Stevenage
train station then let us know in advance. There will be transport from various areas inc London,
South Coast, Berkshire etc - contact us for details.
At 11-45am we will split into teams just like we did on March against the Money Men. From here we
will move off to demo HLS customers in surrounding counties. The demos will finish when the murderers
go home which is about 6pm. We can drop you at either where you joined us or a main line
station but no one will be left short. So you see we will be doing our bit but will you be doing yours?
Or will you let them laugh at the animals?
