R. “Jack” Janoso, Jr.
to the position of
John R. “Jack” president and chief
Janoso, Jr. executive offi cer of
Sharon Regional. Mr. Janoso’s promotion
follows the resignation of Linde Finsrud
Wilson, who was appointed CEO in August
of 2011.
“Sharon Regional is very fortunate to
have someone of Mr. Janoso’s experience
and qualifi cations to lead the Health
System into the future,” said Jazwinski.
“We’re extremely proud of the recent
accomplishments and quality recognitions
Sharon Regional has received, and have
nothing but the highest level of confidence in
our management team, physicians, and all
staff members to continue moving the Health
System forward as the region’s premier
provider of health care services.”
Mr. Janoso most recently served as
participated in the creation and startup of
a 17 health system collaborative purchasing
agreement for Pennsylvania.
Hospice team provides assistance to John XXIII home
Families that face the death of a loved
one are often unprepared for the emotional
and physical stress associated with an
illness of a limited life expectancy. Sharon
Regional’s Hospice and Palliative Care helps
by providing support to family members as
they participate in caring for their dying
loved one.
Sharon Regional’s Hospice and Palliative
Care Program and John XXIII Home in
Hermitage recently observed their one
year anniversary of providing hospice
and palliative care services to residents of
the facility. The relationship began when
members of the John XXIII administrative
team responded to requests from residents
and their family members to have an option
available for terminally ill residents.
Deborah Garrett, RN, director of the
Sharon Regional program, expressed her
thanks for the opportunity to work with John
XXIII Home. “It has truly been an honor and
privilege to have the opportunity to work
alongside such a caring and knowledgeable
facility promoting the hospice mission for the
residents of John XXIII Home,” Garrett said.
The Sharon Regional program is licensed
by the state Department of Health, is
Medicare Certifi ed, and is accredited by The
Joint Commission. It is a member of the PA
Hospice Network.
Mercer man thanks Sharon Regional and
ambulance medics for saving his life
Mike Roddy of Mercer praised the heart attack
care he received at Sharon Regional from the
time he arrived in the Emergency Care Center
through his angioplasty/stent procedure to his
recovery in the Cardiovascular Unit. Sharon
Regional has received several awards recently
for emergency heart attack treatment.
If not for Superior Ambulance medics
Paul Bordas and Ashley Ivan and immediate
action from the heart attack team at Sharon
Regional, Mike Roddy says he probably
wouldn’t have survived his heart attack in
May.
“The response was amazing,” recalls
Mike of his experience during the heart
attack. “They (Paul and Ashley) said taking
me to Sharon Regional from Mercer would
be the best thing. That and the quick action
of the (Sharon) heart team saved my life.”
After experiencing back and chest pain
for about 12 hours, Mike, age 56, went to a
Mercer health clinic, and nurses called
9-1-1 when diagnosing extremely high
blood pressure.
The ambulance team quickly got Mike
to Sharon Regional where he was met
by the cardiac response team and the
catheterization lab team. After more testing,
an angioplasty was performed by Brandon
Mikolich, M.D., FACC, board certified
interventional cardiologist.
Studies show that people having a heart
attack have only about 60 minutes to get
a blocked artery opened. The American
College of Cardiology and the Centers
for Medicare and Medicaid Services have
established guidelines for how soon a
hospital must treat a patient having a heart
attack once they arrive to the hospital. The
guidelines recommend that patients be
taken to the catheterization lab to have their
artery opened within 90 minutes of arrival
to the hospital. This is known as the “door
to balloon” time. Sharon Regional routinely
exceeds national guidelines in providing
rapid care for heart attack patients.
Mike was also complimentary of his
care in the cardiovascular unit of Sharon
Regional’s hospital where he recovered for
fi ve days.
“My care was excellent,” Mike adds.
“Everyone was constantly checking on me.
Their smiling faces are still so vivid in my
mind. There isn’t a day goes by that I don’t
think about this.”
Sharon Regional identified as
heart attack treatment center
by regional EMS council
Heart attack treatment
protocols issued by the Pennsylvania
Department of Health encourage
pre-hospital (ambulance) providers
to take their heart attack (STEMI)
patients to hospitals that offer
emergency angioplasty.
EMMCO West, Inc., northwest
Pennsylvania’s emergency medical
services council, has identifi ed Sharon
Regional Health System as the only
STEMI hospital in Mercer, Lawrence,
and Crawford counties, based on its
advanced technology, emergency
response capabilities, and physician
expertise in emergency heart
attack treatment. STEMI refers to
ST segment elevation myocardial
infarction, the deadliest type of
heart attack.
Sharon Regional completes GE cardiac catheterization research trial
Sharon Regional has completed a multicenter
research trial sponsored by General
Electric Healthcare in order to determine the
benefi ts of a new contrast agent, or dye, for
cardiac catheterizations. Sharon Regional
recruited seven patients into the study, along
with the 25 other participating medical
centers throughout the United States.
“Being asked by General Electric (GE)
Healthcare to be a part of a this large
research project is further evidence of the
exemplary work being done in Sharon
Regional’s Heart and Vascular Institute. By
teaming with other health systems nationwide,
too, we can continue to effectively
refi ne our methods with the most current
research,” said Sharon Regional cardiologist
J. Ronald Mikolich, M.D.
The study was completed in late
December 2011. It took place over a period
of nine months with 260 patients having
completed the research protocol. All SRHS
patients successfully completed the protocol
without any adverse outcomes. The results
Join us on Facebook!
of the study will be available in late 2012,
and are expected to be published in medical
journals in 2013.
Women find ongoing help,
support at Diabetes Center
Heather Hough (left), and Joanna Malencia share their
experience at the Diabetes Center.
Diabetes is the name–Fighting is the
game. Heather Hough and Joanna Malencia
live that slogan every day. Joanna was
diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 14 years
ago and progressed from oral medicines,
to insulin injections, and a year ago to an
insulin pump. Heather was diagnosed with
prediabetes two years ago and so far
has no need for medication thanks to a
determined, continuing plan of weight loss,
exercise, and stress reduction.
“People here at the Diabetes Center
have helped me be successful in managing
my condition that is an everyday concern,”
says Heather, age 54, a retired
school teacher from Grove City.
“They all are very professional and
very encouraging and supportive.
The staff wants you to ask
questions.”
“Prediabetes” is the term when
a person’s blood glucose levels
are higher than normal but not yet
high enough to be diagnosed as
diabetes. Recent research has shown
that some long-term damage to
the body, especially the heart and
circulatory system, may already
be occurring during prediabetes.
The good news, as Heather has
discovered, is there are things
a person can do to prevent or
delay the development of type 2
diabetes.
Heather’s success in managing
her prediabetes meant nutritional
counseling with a Diabetes Center
dietitian, starting an exercise program, and
losing weight--43 pounds to date.
“Learning to deal with my diabetes
and recently my pump is a process,” says
Joanna, 72, a retired registered nurse from
South Pymtuning Township. “The staff is
wonderful—they’re all very good.”
As lifelong learners and educators,
both women not only do the best they can
daily with own health, but want to help
others. Heather encourages others to start
or maintain a healthy lifestyle while Joanna
volunteers at the Diabetes Center. Joanna
urges those with an insulin pump to attend a
