Introduction to … The VARTA ® VGL/VGM Extreme Low Maintenance Battery Range VGL/VGM EXTREME LOW MAINTENANCE With over 100 years of experience in the design and manufacture of Ni-Cd industrial batteries, supported by an ethos of continuous improvement and technical development, EnerSys ® offers a world leading range of solutions to suit varying applications. The new VARTA ® VGL/VGM battery series combines proven VARTA ® Ni-Cd pocket plate technology with Power- Safe ® ELM-Technology offering the same features as standard Ni-Cd battery system but reducing the maintenance requirements to a minimum and offering an excellent performance and extended lifetime. VARTA ® Extreme Low Maintenance (ELM) VGL/VGM batteries provide a 20 years + lifetime without the need of topping-up. It has been especially designed to operate at high temperature applications and is perfectly suited to provide power back up for the oil and gas, utility and electricity industries. The battery´s continuous operational temperature is 0 °C to + 40 °C but can tolerate short term temperature fluctuations from – 50 °C to + 70 °C VARTA ® VGL/VGM batteries equipped with the PowerSafe ® ELM-Technology show an excellent chargeability at elevated temperatures even at a single level low voltage charge as for instance VGM batteries that can be recharged to over 90% of their nominal capacity within 15 hours with a constant charge of 1.43 V/cell and a current limitation of 0.1 C 5 A. With the new PowerSafe ® ELM-Technology TM , a recombusion rate of up to 90% can be achieved (depending on the float voltage and ambient temperature), which makes VARTA VGL/ VGM batteries the market leader in low maintenance high reliability standards. PowerSafe ® ELM-Technology used in VGL/VGM batteries is unique and is based on a special plate design, special separation system, special venting system and a special cell design. Features of VARTA ® VGL/VGM Ni-Cd batteries • No need to top up during the lifetime but possible if needed • Using the PowerSafe ® ELM-Technology a 90 % gas recombination rate is achieved • Good chargeability even with single level low voltage charge • Improved performance and lifetime at high temperatures • Exceptional capacity range available • Long storage period before being installed • Conforms to IEC 62259 PowerSafe ® ELM-Technology The PowerSafe ® ELM-Technology is present in various VARTA´s Ni-Cd battery ranges but is used in its broadest extension in the VGL/VGM range. In order to reduce the water consumption, enhance chargeability and make it suitable for high temperature applications, PowerSafe ® ELM-Technology Technology has been developed based on four key features: • special plate design • special separation system • special venting system • special cell design Special plate design VARTA ® VGL/VGM batteries have been designed with an oversized negative plate to ensure oxygen evolution occurs prior to hydrogen evolution, oxygen from positive plate transfers to negative and recombines to water. Further, new developed materials and manufacturing processes are used to offer all the unique features of VARTA ® VGL/VGM batteries. Special separation system The oxygen created at the positive plate is absorbed by a special felt separator and prevented to escape from the distance between the plates. Displacement of electrolyte by oxygen bubbles occur within the separator and reach the surface of the negative plate consuming the current directly, ie hydrogen evolution at the negative plate is prevented since the preferred reaction is oxygen recombination. Special venting system VARTA ® VGL/VGM battery cells are equipped which a low pressure flame arresting vent that operates as a one way valve and allows the escape of hydrogen and non-recombined oxygen. The internal pressure is fixed at 0.2 bar. Cell design Due to the pressure inside of the battery cell that is needed to reach a high recombination level, a sturdy case design is necessary to prevent leakages. The VARTA ® VGL/VGM battery range provides a single cell design that prevents the greatest possible any leakage are made by injection molding out of one piece. Therefore, the weld or glue seams of the cell cases are above the electrolyte level. The VARTA ® single cell design eliminates completely the risk of faulty weld seams on the sides and on the bottom of the cell cases and assures an economical replacement of cells within batteries. 2 Publication No: ELM-VGL/VGM-RS-02 - November 2009
