Well the break is over and it is time to get back to flying. I sure hope you managed to build more than I
did. Despite all of the plans, kits, wood, and time I still did not get much done since I keep getting distracted.
What is the secret of distraction avoidance that some people seem to have? I did use the balsa tube
building techniques that Bob Loffler shared at one of the meetings and it worked well. Now I want to work
on a more streamlined pylon, and I still do not have a method for making identical ribs that I am happy
with so my tinkering distractions will probably continue. Perhaps the problem is that I love to tinker.
NEXT CONTEST
Fall Kick-off
Sept 15 th 2013 7:00 am
New Field (Webster-West)
AMA membership required for Flyers
Visitors Welcome

The long hot summer is
almost over! Can’t wait!
So what’s on the horizon?
To start with, we
have a place to fly. Our
search committee received
firm “Yes” responses
from three different
land owners in
TG
late June giving us
about 80 acres to set up and fly from. This is along
the north side of Shay Road and begins a half mile
to the east of Sunland Gin Road. We are not done
looking. There are two 40 acres parcels adjacent
to the secured area, which is our current focus.
This has been a difficult, time consuming business.
We still have our original (Webster Field) that we
are keeping for a backup place to fly. The greatest
issue with Webster Field is the irrigation of the surrounding
fields and the fact that we cannot use our
chase bikes on those fields. We are calling the
new area Webster West.
For those who have concerns about the current
scoring system, I have a couple of words. First, I
am the guy responsible for our scoring system. I
get some expert help to make things happen, but
when the product goes into use, I am the guy responsible.
Early this year it was obvious that the
system needed work. We put in a mid course
change that we will live with thru the balance of this
year. Work has already begun on a follow-on system.
Anyone with positive ideas is welcome to
present those ideas at any of our meetings. I won’t
allow our meetings to become a committee of the
whole. The discourse that takes place using this
approach is time consuming and unproductive. But
a short, well organized business like proposal of 15
minutes or less is most welcome.
Late last spring, we lost a loyal, long term member
– Bob Loeffler. Bob will be missed. John Nystedt
did a great job; assisting Bob, visiting him regularly
and finally assisting the family is disposing of Bob’s
modeling things. Thank you John! I for one, have
a great deal of Bob’s items I want to share with others.
I will bring items to meetings and to our contests
to give away.
A word about email. This is simply the way I look
at personal email. If you think my approach has
merit, you might incorporate these thoughts in your
personal use of the email system. At times we get
swept up in an emotional argument using email as
our vehicle to convey our message. Be careful!
Don’t send anything that you can’t say to the other
person, eye to eye in an unemotional manner.
Have you ever written an email and after writing it
have read it carefully and then decided “I could really
zing this guy if I just inserted blab, blab, blab,
etc, etc”. And then if I just sent this beauty to 10 or
15 others, I could really put the guy down. And
man would that make me feel good! Our most recent
spate of crap emails has resulted in bad feelings
being generated needlessly between two
great guys that can easily tear our club apart. Next
time THINK! Clean up your language. THINK!
Then hit send.

Since 8/23 I'm in the lower Tatra
mountains, Slovakia to fly in the
F1E World Champs and to get
away from the Arizona heat. It
might interest some of you what is
happening here therefore I copied
a few short reports that I put on
TG
facebook.
Yesterday (8/25) we flew the Martin F1E World Cup in warm
weather and light winds. About 75 flyers flew the first 5
BB
rounds with mostly 5 min maxes. There were then 35 flyers
who maxed out - including Bob Sifleet, Joel Yori (Jr) and I.
For the 7 min fly-off we moved down the slope quite a bit. I
had an amazing 7 min flight, 11 more flyers also made that
one. For the 9 min fly-off we were nearly at the bottom of the
slope with bushes and a corn field real close. I had a good
flight and achieved 2nd place. The retrieval of the models
was a walk of an average of 3/4 mile down the hills and then
the same distance back up the hills was the hardest part. Today
we have rain and the model checking in a large tent. In
the afternoon we'll have the opening ceremony of the 2013
F1E World Champs.
Today (8/27) the 2013 Junior F1E World Champs were held
here near Martin, Slovak Repubic. There were about 22 juniors
from 7 countries. 7 juniors maxed out flying 5x300 seconds.
the 7 min fly-off close to the bottom of the slope was
won by a Polish young man, a girl from France, Aurelie Trachez,
was second. Our American kid, Joel Yori (Bob Sifleet's
grandson) was 5th. Tomorrow the Seniors have their World
Champs.
Today (8/28) The
F1E World
Champs
(Seniors) got
started on the
same hill where
we flew the
Martin World BB
Cup. There were about 35 F1E flyers from 12 countries. The
wind was close to 0 m/s. Bob Sifleet and I each had solid 5
min max flights in Round 1 and Round 2. Tom Ioerger
dropped in both rounds. Most flyers maxed these 2 rounds
except for 9. For round 3 the organizer moved the flight line
down the hill to make maxing more difficult - but as we
walked to this new launch position a steady rain started. The
jury then decided to halt the contest and postpone it for
Thursday, the reserve day. Leaving the field was difficult with
cars and motor homes slipping and sliding and some getting
stuck in the mud.
FLASH - the 2013 F1E World Championship for Seniors are
concluded. Alain Roux, France, is the new World Champion
and the
Team
France won
Gold. Bob
Sifleet,
USA, won
individual
Silver. Peter
Brocks BB
was 6th
and Tom Ioerger 8th individual. The Team USA won the Silver
medal (Sifleet, Brocks, Ioerger). Flying today was very
difficult with the wind coming from the side and wind speeds
between 5m/s in the morning and 10m/s at the fly-off. Retrieval
was very hard because of the long distances in the
rough terrain, the corn and the trees that kept many models.
See you in the fall,
Peter

Check your copy of the National Free Flight Society Digest issue for June of 2003, which contains a plan
and a review of a P-20 kit by Andrey Burdov called the Pigmy 20. Shig did some research and found plans
for the Pixy20 by Bob White are available from Bob Holman.
P-20 Rules
Any design with rubber motor enclosed in the fuselage. Motor limited to a maximum
weight ( lubricated weight ) of 5.0 grams.
20.0 inch maximum projected wingspan. Maximum length of 20.0 inches overall.
Must use a commercially available plastic propeller, 8.0 inch maximum diameter.
Only allowable propeller modifications are same as AMA P-30 rules.
No folders.
Maxes: flight 1 = 120 seconds, flight 2 =120 seconds, flight 3 = 120 seconds,
fly off flight 1 = 150 seconds, fly off flight 2 = 180 seconds, fly off flight 3= 210
seconds, fly off flight 4= 240 seconds, etc Attempt is 20 seconds or more.
Editors note: I plan to add this to the two minute combo group for scoring purposes in keeping with the club policy of being
able to find some group to fly in for about anything you can bring to the field. (This is subject to club officer approval.)

AIRFOIL
Once upon a time there was a great magazine called Model Builder. It was a terrific resource for our hobby.
Several notable folks served as editors of the Free Flight column including our own Jean Andrews.
For most of the time the Free Flight editor was Bob Stalick. Bob ran a feature called Darn Good Airfoil
each month with a brief description and the coordinates. Back in the 80s Barnaby Wainfan did a presentation
at the annual NFFS Symposium titled The Design of Free Flight Airfoils For Minimum Sink. Bob paraphrased
Wainfan's major points
*LEADING EDGE RADIUS: the radius should be as small as possible ... 1% is nearly double the performance
of the airfoil over a 3% radius.
*LEADING EDGE BEHIND THE POINT: a leading edge flat spot directly behind the I.e. radius at the 2 to
3% location improves turbulation.
• POSITION OF THE HIGH POINT: High point should be between 25% and 40% of the airfoil ... with
some improvement noted the closer to 40%.
• THE EPPLER TEST: Airfoils should not drop off more than 5% between the 40% and 80% positions,
thereby reducing trailing edge separation.
*TRAILING EDGE THICKNESS: The thickness at the trailing edge should be in the neighborhood of 1 %
and be perfectly sharp to decrease drag.
• EFFECT OF THICKNESS: The airfoil should be as thin as possible, still allowing room for adequate
structural considerations, 9% appears to be the maximum.
• UNDERCAMBER: (not detailed in the article but covered in the oral presentation) Undercamber improves
duration as long as it follows the mean camber line.
This airfoil won’t be the fastest climbing, but should have a terrific glide.
Copies of 32 years of Symposium reports are available on CD from NFFS
