Services
The Web Services team delivers online information
to the Victorian community and beyond.
Its achievements for the Library in 2007–08 include:
design, development and launch of ergo,
in conjunction with the Learning Services
Division
design, development and launch
of the new intranet
design and development of the Victorian
Government Gazette website, due for
launch later in 2008
development of a new image gallery,
launched for Victorians on Vacation and
used to promote The Medieval Imagination
continuous enhancements to and daily
publishing of content on the corporate
website, including promotional banners
on the homepage
expansion of our online offerings of video
and audio, including recordings of lectures
and selected events, as well as audio
tours for Mirror of the World, Victorians on
Vacation and The Medieval Imagination
ways for users to engage with the
Library’s exhibitions through the online
photo competition ‘Wish You Were Here’
(as part of Victorians on Vacation)
online support for the Summer Read,
including an author blog
online support for the Inky Awards
on insideadog
a new performance-reporting system,
allowing staff across the Library to enter
and review their own data reports
on key performance indicators
a new daily reporting and notifi cation
calendar system for reference desk
staff, providing enhanced communications
for a busy team.
On behalf of Vicnet, the team designed and
developed sites, systems, enhancements or
applications for community clients, through
projects that included:
the implementation of local-history
project WikiNorthia
providing a results-reporting system for
Macedon Ranges Tennis Association
a custom-built, content-management system
for the Australian Garden History Society
a custom-built, content-management system
for the Hon. Gavin Jennings MLC for the
South Eastern Metropolitan Region
the Skills.net Roadshow online
evaluation system
the delivery of additional enhancements for
the Wynlearn Community Learning Portal
upgrade of Victoria’s Virtual Library, public
library locator system.
The team also provided support for slv21 initiatives
such as Federated Search, digitisation projects
and the Digital Object Management System, and
planning the redevelopment of the Library’s
corporate website – which will be a strong focus
for the next 12 months.
Applications
Development
and Services
The Applications unit supports the development
of services and maintenance of Library systems.
The major focus has been the Integrated Library
Management System (Voyager). This year the
unit also contributed to several slv21 projects:
Digital Object Management System, Federated
Search, direct delivery, the intranet and
digitisation, as well as to a large number of
smaller projects that support Voyager users.
Outcomes for 2007–08 include:
participation in the Digital Object
Management System tender process,
development of the implementation plan,
training and testing of the processes
participation in the Federated Search
tender process
participation in the preparation of Direct
Delivery tender specifi cations
contributing to programming for the
development of the intranet
support of digitisation projects through
continued development and automation of
processes; supplying shelf lists; completion
of the redesign of display pages for
objects viewed through Voyager; assisting
with the second stage of the Port Phillip
Papers digitisation project
development of tools for the addition and
management of bulk bibliographic record
sets to Voyager
development of tools to repurpose
bibliographic data, improving workflows
assisting other divisions with reviews
of business processes involving Voyager
support for Shared Leadership
and Fellowship projects
supporting the Collection Storage plan
through construction of a new collection
at the Ballarat offsite store; improvements
to circulation for collections relocated to
Ballarat; and assisting with the relocation
of collection materials between open
and closed storage.
